I'm curious... how many of you have actually fired a gun? (outside of Halo or a FPS of course  )

I'm just asking because my fencing coach in Austin was from New York and didn't have any guns... but he DID have a long bow instead (Which I think is fabulous! Tho I prefer a compound bow myself)

Pistols - 9mm, .45mm (Nines Baby), 357 Magnum (almost dislocated my shoulder) and a flare gun.

Rifles - 30-07 Remington, .22 Remington, 9mm Rifle (Resident Evilish), Drugnov (only two rounds though)

12 Guage Shotgun

And I forgot what I fired it for but I shot something called a "Bird Bomb". It just went out into the woods and went BOOM.

My father's a bit of a gun nut.

Also, a BB gun which took the liberty....of taking my left eyes vision.

@ AJJ - Great post. I agree in principal with most everything you said. And i am a gun "nut."

I would, however, offer 1 point. gun show purchases are not all untracked. I purchased my shotgun at a gun show, and went through the same id and background checks as I did when I have bought rifles or pistols from a dedicated gun dealership.

I have fired paintball guns. Never fired an actual one because we don't have them here; but I have (unsuccessfully) investigated firing ranges when planning Stateside holidays. Probably doing Vegas/California next year so I expect I will get my hands on some weaponry then. Let's see how I feel about a REAL shotgun...

I remember the first time I fired a shotgun. Nearly fell over from the recoil...

@Mrs. P: I certainly have! Having been raised around guns, they don't really bother me, and I know how to handle them. Started off with a good 'ole .22, then went to a 30-30 (yeah, THAT was a change of pace!), and have settled in with my 30-06! I have also fired a handful of a few other guns, from my 9mm handgun, to a 12 gauge shotgun. Also fired a .45 ACP!

Same here.

Expert Marksman in both Rifles and Pistols in the military.

And while I understand that few people operate their lives like it was 1787, neither does the government and their large standing army.

It is important to me that the issue of the 2nd Amendment not be separated from its purpose - as a mechanism for the citizens to hopefully protect themselves from a tyrannical government at home. I also feel that allowing the government to control the guns, and know exactly where they are defeats this purpose.

Instead, my issue lies primarily with our culture (and its attitude toward guns). There are other countries that have a large portion of their populace armed, with relatively high powered rifles, and they have an extremely low gun crime rate. They do however have significantly more training than the average yahoo in this country.

That's an interesting perspective Gengo. One that I'll chew on and return with feedback.

Now in England if you commit a crime - the police don't have a gun and you don't have a gun so if you commit a crime: 'STOP....Or I'll say stop again!'"

It seems obvious that "more regulation" is not necessarily the answer, but neither does "more firearms." There needs to be a combination of cultural awareness & responsibility and governmental regulation for there to be a "peaceful coexistence" between a nation and its guns IMO. I don't know if the US is currently capable of the kind of awareness & responsibility that would balance the current access & freedom with firearms in such a way that it is not destructive (if that makes sense).

It definitely needs to be addressed on multiple fronts. Exposure to how other countries work (UK, Canada, Switzerland) can help us see at least which "fronts" need to be addressed. Currently, I think the freedom of access in the US needs to be balanced with more regulation & personal responsibility.

That's reasonable Aslans.

I'm stuck trying to reconcile Gengo's feedback with living on the set of Idiocracy.

My issue is that there IS a severe mass production, in general, of weaponry we obviously will never need.

I've always loved the line from Lord of War

"Do you know why I do what I do? I mean, there are more prestigeous assignments. Keeping track of nuclear arsenels - you'd think that be more critical to world security. But it's not. No, nine out of ten war victims today are killed with assault rifles and small arms - like yours. Those nuclear weapons sit in their silos. Your AK-47, that's the real weapon of mass destruction." - Jack Valentine

And it's true.

The set of Idiocracy is for sure the problem - it's not just that some people don't see the choices they make are ushering it in, it's that some people are actively rushing toward it.

Just one of the most epic movies.. Evar!!

jk

Epic from the perspective of how true it is in its over-the-top-ness. Directed by Mike Judge of Beavis and Butthead fame. Succinct summary from wiki:

Quote:

The film tells the story of two ordinary people taken into a top-secret military hibernation experiment to awaken in a dystopia wherein advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly stupid human society devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights.

My sister and I decided to wait till two days ago to watch the film out of respect of those who lost their lives at this obscene incident.
We know that it does not help, but we could not watch the film in the first week of the UK release as the news was still fresh in our minds.

At least the bastard is getting his ass kicked DOWN by justice. Seriously, :stab:

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims, their families and friends, and our cheers to the heroes who continued to protect others in spite of themselves, and the heroic Police and security workers who dismantled traps and explosives in order to get evidence against the criminal (who is, indeed, a motherfucker).
