My sister and I decided to wait till two days ago to watch the film out of respect of those who lost their lives at this obscene incident.
We know that it does not help, but we could not watch the film in the first week of the UK release as the news was still fresh in our minds.

At least the bastard is getting his ass kicked DOWN by justice. Seriously, :stab:

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims, their families and friends, and our cheers to the heroes who continued to protect others in spite of themselves, and the heroic Police and security workers who dismantled traps and explosives in order to get evidence against the criminal (who is, indeed, a motherfucker).
well put, yellowman; I was just commenting to my wife how the movie, as awesome as it is, will forever be linked to this tragedy which is a shame.

I'm not so sure it will. People really aren't trying to connect the incident to the movie this time (which is rare - remember how Marilyn Manson was blamed for Columbine?!), which is good, because it had nothing to do with it.

I hope you're right - it just seems to be so closely tied these days in the media here in the US. I think it will, since I don't associate Columbine with Manson at all now.

I did see a magazine calling it The Batman Shooting and was blaming "Greedy Hollywood" for the whole thing.

There are still some people who think there is a connection, it's thankfully not as widespread.

You shouldn't!!!

IF it worked that way, the average student would be going on rape, pillaging and plundering sprees just from reading History books. Imagine a world full of Henry VIII's???

It boils down to MANY factors that play vital parts - Upbringing, Friends, Environment, Thought Process. Everyone is "wired" differently. NOBODY thinks exactly alike (except for that identical twin jargon...which is creepy).

Moreso, I wrote in to the Opinions aka Voice of the People (shocking, eh?) section of the New York Daily News, and I've been featured twice. The first was in response to an article about the release of GTA stirring a story about a Police Officer shot in the line of duty. The mother of the Officer made an outlandish boycott against the game claiming "Grand Theft Auto teaches children how to be criminals."

They edited it b/c I brought up other examples but here is My response:

"Long Beach, L.I.: Re "A cruel craze" (April 30): I understand that "Grand Theft Auto" is a violent game that should not be in the hands of children. And I sympathize with Tatyana Timoshenko for her loss. But you cannot blame a video game for her son's death. Years ago, violence among kids was blamed on Marilyn Manson and heavy metal music. Before that, it was TV's fault. The game is rated Mature for a reason. As a 25-year-old male, I have no problem picking up this title and enjoying it knowing it's fictional - Alex Dobrzynski " -

not sure I understand what you're replying to, Psycko, but I was trying to say that there seems to be a cultural reference connection (but not causal) between the Dark Knight movie and the shooting. I never saw the Manson-Columbine connection in either way (reference or causal) so it gives me hope that one day this shooting event will not be associated with the movie. Hope that makes sense.

How do you mean a cultural connection?

I was saying that there isn't any reason from the movie/franchise/etc that enabled the shooting. The dude was flat out "off his rocker".
It was really more of a reply to the Manson Subliminally caused the Columbine Incident.

by cultural connection I mean in the larger "media" and "conversational" culture, there is a connection, a calling to mind of one when the other is in the mind as well.

In this case, no one that I know here in the US will currently think of the Aurora shooting without also at-the-same-time thinking of the DK movie. Not in a causal way, like DK caused anything, but in a general referential way. Does that help?

It's going to bring the event to their mind, but not stop them from watching it.

Okay I get it now.

Thank you brain fart.

Of course it will. Same thing with Columbine/Kent State. Kevin Smith made a comment about it when he filmed An Evening With... AT Kent. He made a smooth joke to break the ice too which was thankfully well recieved.

"We called and told them our crew was going to be shooting at Kent State. They replied 'Bulllllshit!'"

But he made a statement saying that no matter what Kent does to better itself, they could cure cancer and there will still be a slew of people who will immediately go "Yeah but isn't that where those shootings took place?" to which he compared to Germany. The average person will immediately think of Nazi's and all associated with it. He told another small story about that where he and a group of friends went and all they wanted to see was that kind of stuff b/c the history was just soaked in it.

It's a sad ordeal. Hell, I'm happy to be out of Long Beach due to it's false portrayal in the movie City By The Sea with James Franco b/c the actual incident happend, I believe, in the Rockaways area.
