Penn State Gets Fined $60M and other penalties

No matter how much they do, it won't be enough. Glad to see that Penn State will be hurting for quite a while over this though.

I think the guy should be discredited as much as possible for his disgraceful silence . . .

Related. The Catholic Church could learn something from the punishment handed out by the NCAA to Penn State.

agreed. I am just as disgusted (more, actually) when it happens in a church setting.

Yeah, from what I understand, the NCAA hit Joe Paterno because they felt he allowed (encouraged? engineered?) the cover up to protect his legacy.

If this would have naturally come out in 2000, the university would have had some sort of penalty (albeit much smaller) that would have had an impact on the program. Everything that I'm hearing is that the motivation for the coverup from all of the university officials involved was that it (the coverup) had to be done to protect the legacy / place in history for the coach, the program, and the university.

fair enough, and i agree with that sentiment, just wish he was alive to take his lumps. messing with dead people just seems off

unless its hitler, of course

I understand, per0 - it's awkward that most of this all came out AFTER his death. I see it as more of a penalty on the legacy of the man & school than on the "dead Paterno," if that makes sense.

agreed, it is just sad that this will be the last anyone thinks of him, that he doesn't have a chance to attempt to atone or rebuild his legacy.
