makes the stone go faster or change direction by slightly melting the ice / changing the friction, I think.
You're right about this, it just looks very funny!

That is because they are all drunk... or at least they look like that to me. I support curling, which is why I  with them!

Side note....
FENCING DRAMA (specifically Epee)
REALLY mad about the semi-finalist epee match between S. Korea and Germany.

Austrian referee added a second to the clock just before S. Korean got priority in a 5pt vs 5 pt all tied up match.

S. Korean double touched with 1 second left on the clock THREE bloody times...

And they gave it to the German. :bawl:

SO MAD right now!

Right now the S. Korean is refusing to leave the strip while her coach files the written appeal. If she leaves the strip she acknowledges it is all over...

I hope they overturn the call, that the referee is fired from Olympic events, and that the Timekeeper isn't allowed to do any more Olympic matches!!! :curse:

:bored: After an hour of debate with the bout committee and the written appeal of which one of the South Koreans had to put up money for the appeal to be heard, they didn't overturn the appeal. :alert: :wtf: And Shin was still sitting on the strip because according to the rules if she left the piste she would be accepting defeat.

They made her leave the strip.

The German stole the match. :wall:

But you know... :whatever:

Moving past this.. I watched Shin A. Lam (S. Korea) fence :duel: the really tall Chinese lady... with TWO beautiful toe touches... sadly she lost. All because of that one second controversy.

Shin... you will ALWAYS be a gold medalist to me! And is now my favorite fencer (even if she is an epee fencer)! :wuv:

BBC
Londton Telegraph

London Olympics... I am DONE with you!
(that.... and I blame Scruff for all of this ;) )

The REAL Gold Medalist in Women's Epee... Shin A. Lam!!! (on right)

that sucks, Brandi! Of the few events I have watched there was a very controversial call in a swimming match yesterday; they disqualified the defending champion (who won) for an early start off the block (he was of Asian origin, can't remember). What stuck out to me was the controversial replay; there was no early start. Sounds like these officials suck all around.

You know what... I would've cried too! Let's make fun of all the crying girls in the world who have a legitimate reason to cry. :bored:
Oh look a girl crying... let's make fun of her because it's obviously her inferior hormones causing her to leak from the eyeballs. It's not sexist at all! :wall:

Man. Shin Lam is trending like crazy! There are like a hundred new photos of her on google now! ;)

For those of you who are non-fencers... these two articles explain the situation a little better... (also the FIE website has BIOs on all the fencers in the Olympics and a video explaining what fencing is)
ESPN

Global Post Website

Also if you need any fencing info this is the website you need to visit --> FIE

@Aslan - Apparently the swimming and fencing controversies aren't the only controversies being talked about. I read something about a judo controversy, but I can't seem to figure out what happened in that one. Did you hear about it?

No I didn't hear anything about that. Where do they get these judges? Does the host country provide them or are they international reps?

All I got to see were a few swimming matches and volleyball on Sunday. Oh and the "coreographed" gymnastics. I'll never understand that one. Pummel Horse, Rings, Uneven Parallel Bar, etc I can understand those but the little dances and head shakes between doing flips and spins doesn't do it for me. Like it doesn't make sense. Like one girl was awarded extra points bc she pulled off a little hop after her big dismount. I understand the balance and whatnot about it...but why does that little hop cost so much? I'm not so much asking as just half flipping out about NOT understanding it. B/c I don't.

That being said, REINTRODUCE MOTORBOATING!!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/why-did-japan-coach-100-bills-hand-file-141557317--oly.html

Ooookay....how is that NOT a bribe?

Didn't get "proper" ruling on "dismount"
Coach Offers Money
Gets Appeal

and even if the appeal isn't offered, the judges KEEP THE MONEY??!?!

Yeah, only b/c I'm an Italian American...in the states we call that a bribe

Another reason why I can't bother wrapping my head around this stuff. I come from an area/group where "If you lose, you lose. Winners win by winning."

Not saying that filing for a fair appeal is abhorant but this just puzzles me.

yeah it definitely seems fishy. Maybe that's why so many bad calls are being made - the judges are hoping for appeals! $$$$$

No, the reason for the money in order to file an appeal is to keep people from making an appeal after every call. There really isn't anything shady about it at all.

Speaking as someone who has run a fencing tournament for a large circuit event...Trust me. The money thing is necessary for those drama queens who want to appeal every call that is made by the referee just so they can try to weasel a few points here and there in their favor.

Not to mention that it can throw off the other person off of their "zone" and cause a psychological impact that may influence the rest of the bout/meet/fight etc.

Sucks, tho.

Enjoyed watching some of the swimming and gymnastics last night. Felt bad for Michael Phelps - so much pressure to perform at Beijing levels, and I think he's definitely not that guy anymore.

US ladies gymnastic team was mesmerizing to watch. I'm sure I couldn't even walk across that parallel bar and they're doing all kinds of fancy stuff on it. Impressive.

I was commenting to my wife about the close medal race between US and China and she told me that her Dad knows a former Chinese athlete who got to experience the "governmental control" firsthand.

Any child showing athletic promise is quickly scooped up and "sponsored" by the government. The only education they receive has to do with their sport, and their family relies on their success to pay the bills. This particular athlete was injured and unable to keep up with training so the government dropped her cold; as a young adult she had no other skills or education to fall back on, and her family also could not rely on her support any more. She ended up in Canada (where my father-in-law is). What a sick system!

Makes me appreciate the US athletes all the more (in comparison) as they paid their own way (or their parents) and did it all because they love the sport.
