Posted Image A WISH FOR SOMETHING MORE YOU’VE ALWAYS KNOWN YOU’RE DIFFERENT The wind harasses your senses, pinching and prodding them until you have to pay attention. You can’t ignore it forever, you hear the wind whisper, its voice soft and deadly-sweet. You shiver and lower your eyes, hoping that nobody notices how you’re shifting from one foot to the other with the air of someone who is incredibly uncomfortable. They just looked at you as if you were insane, crazy, when you declared that you thought that castle was beautiful. You can’t understand why they can’t see it, and from this point on, you know you are different. Deep down, you’ve always known, haven’t you? The sun glares down at you, making you shine and shimmer in its cruel and beautiful rays. It makes you stand out, and you don’t like it. You’re an outcast, even in your own town… even in your own home. You don’t understand yourself, so how can they even begin to understand you? You just want to fit in. You’ve always known that you’re different. And then you get the letter, don’t you? The letter which confirms what you’ve always suspected. What other explanation is there for the fact that two hundred people around you all froze at once, at you stood there, perfectly unfrozen? You have read books about supernatural powers, you’ve considered this as being an explanation for the weird things that you seem to make happen, but you’ve always shook the thoughts about of your head. There’s no such thing as magic, that’s what you thought. But there was no denying your gift, who you are, when you received that formally scribed letter. The Excalibur Institute for the Magically Inclined. It means nothing to you; it’s a school, named after King Arthur’s sword, for people with magical powers. You have magical powers. Deep down, you’ve always known you’re different, haven’t you? So you go to Excalibur Institute; your family and friends think you’ve won a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school. You don’t mind lying to them, as long as you are learning how to nurture your magic, magic which is encouraged to the surface instead of forced back to the misty confines of your troubled mind. But it doesn’t really go according to plan, does it? The first few weeks are thrilling; the breathtaking scenery and feeling of unity makes you feel at home and wanted… but then you start to realise that, although magic is on your side, not everything runs smoothly. You are part of a myth, a legendary character, and every myth has its twists and turns… With a cloud handing over the castle ominously, you are sticking with those who are like you, with your own kind, in the hope of surviving… Here, you are just the same as everyone else. School life is hard enough, with hormones screeching and arms flailing, desperate for attention. But you carry the extra burden of having to protect your secret, having to keep up appearances to those outside of the school whilst learning, absorbing information to ensure that you pass your exams... You’re a danger to the real world while you have no control of your gift, so you must learn to control it. You have the support of those around you – adolescents and teachers who all share the same secret – but what do you do when those around you are struggling just as much? You’re on your own, isolated in weird unity. And you have a wish for something more... |
