Professor James Pearson was not the sort of man to be easily swayed or unsettled. When he had left Hatton Heights all those many years ago he figured he was gone for good, and being back in the same halls he used to walk as a student was a little unsettling. He hadn't been the best student, but he had a natural ability and an easy charm that ensured he made it to graduation unscathed. He did regret his lack of attention to his education once he was beyond the sheltered walls of Hatton High, because although he lived on the wilder side in his teen years there was no way he was prepared for the pressures of life outside the small town. Here he knew what to expect, he knew where he fit, out there he was a nobody. He had to struggle to make a place for himself and he couldn't use his ability to do it. Not that he thought his ability was a useful one. Being able to fly had not really gotten Pearson anywhere, excuse the pun, and since leaving Hatton he hadn't used it more than a dozen times. That's less than twelve times in ten years. He hadn't ever thought a lot of it as far as abilities went, but then he had been in a class room with the one and only Micheal Thomas and his denser then normal muscle mass meaning he could do whatever the bloddy hell he wanted. Then of course there was Emily. Ah Emily. He hadn't thought anything of her back in the day. She was pretty enough, but she was a bit of a geek and spent all her time reading and training and hanging out with that Micheal Git. They had been the poster pair for the school, the two everyone wanted to be like, and James had been the flying boy with no friends. Well, life was cruel, and while Micheal and Emily had stayed behind and eventually went on to run the town, James had explored the world, visited the countries he had learned about in class, worked in a million different places and doing a million different things before settling down and going back to school. When he had finished his teaching degree at the top of his class no one had been more surprised then he, and as he had no idea what to do with himself after achieving his one goal, he returned to his home town in search of work. Well, he had really been looking for somewhere he could hide out without being called out for what he was. Truth was, he had been caught flying a few months back and had ended up with his face on the evening news. So it was back to Hatton to lay low, at least for now. He was shocked from his thoughts by the sound of someone approaching form behind. |
