The Woman In Charge

Emily stood stock still and closed her eyes. Tilting her head slightly, she tried to hear the trees 'whispering' and sighed as the wind moved through them. She had begun extending her gifts beyond the electric currents and shock waves she had been born with, and found this time she spent with the trees was the best for channeling her energy and concentrating her gifts. Emily had been a great student, which was why it had been no surprise she had become a teacher, and less of a surprise still that she had become headmaster. No one was worried when Emily was in charge, because Emily was suppose to be in control, she was the woman everyone turned to. But she was finding it harder and harder to maintain her position and keep the townspeople calm. Everyday new people kept coming and disturbing their way of life, and Emily was finding it difficult to focus. Shock waves had been coming from her without her control, and more than once the power in her home had shorted out. Blocking all this from her mind, Emily brought her head upright and opened her eyes, focusing on the bright red box she had placed about thirty feet in front of her. bringing her arms up, Emily focused everything she had on lifting the box. It shuddered and began to move, before being crushed by the shear force of the energy. letting go, Emily groaned and tried to catch her breathe. That kind of concentration could take a lot out of a person, especially when it wasn't where their natural talent lay. rubbing her neck, Emily stilled when a few twigs behind her snapped, indicating that she wasn't alone. Stilling herself, Emily went on to high alert and prepared herself to spin around and knock whoever it was off their feet. Unless of course she recognized them before she reacted, but the way things had been going, there was little chance she would be able to control the waves that threatened to burst forth even with her intense concentration. |

Michael was ambling along, mumbling to himself about the Throwbacks and the mess they had caused down at the pier two nights back, and the mess they were going to create tonight, and the night after, and the night after that. It seemed his work had only intensified over the last few months, despite all the new procedures he had implemented to try and get some time off work. He hadn't done it for her. Oh no, definitely not for her. His new, more relaxed working schedule had nothing to do with Emily Larcombe and her constant suggestions to lighten the load a little. He didn't even think about her twice as he handed out the new rosters and warned everyone his phone would be off for a few hours every night. It had nothing to do with wanting to please Emily. And suddenly, there she was. Facing him in attack position, eyes blazing and hands outstretched. Mike new better than to make any sudden movement, so instead he froze, staring into her |

Emily smiled inwardly when she realized who it was, though she tried her best not to break her stance. She was sure he hadn't actually seen her yet, and her suspicion was confirmed when he looked up, seemingly surprised to find her their. The shocked look on his face made her laugh, and she relaxing in response standing upright and moving toward her box. "What are you doing sneaking around the woods, Mikey? Any rogue criminals running about up here I should know about?" Emily flashed him a smile as she turned back to face him and slowly closed her eyes, ready to resume the task of practicing precision. Expanding her abilities was not an easy feat, but she had managed it with a measure of success. Now she just had to lean to control it. Slowly the box began to hover above the ground, just slightly, before suddenly imploding in on itself. |

The minute Mike was sure he wasn’t about to be knocked onto his feet by one of Emily’s power surges, Mike relaxed his position and laughed along. He glanced over at the red box and furrowed his brow slightly. What on earth is she doing with that? His wondering was interrupted by Emily’s comment "What are you doing sneaking around the woods, Mikey? Any rogue criminals running about up here I should know about?" He cringed at her use of his childhood nickname, speculating not for the first time when she would stop seeing him as the lifelong friend he had promised to be before he had been old enough to realize that she was a girl, and therefore not a boy. “No, I er... I got the afternoon off, so I thought I’d do a little hiking. You know, get some fresh air.” He watched her as he spoke, tilting his head slightly as she closed her eyes, doubting she was even aware how beautiful she looked in all her concentration. Suddenly the box began to hover, before being crushed by the shear force of her ability. His shock was visible on his face and he didn’t try to hide it. “You’re expanding your ability?” He tried to sound nonchalant as he asked, but he wasn’t to sure he pulled it off. |

“No, I er... I got the afternoon off, so I thought I’d do a little hiking. You know, get some fresh air.” "You got time off? Wow, I thought the town couldn't last without you, not even for a minute." Emily said it as a joke, but she was surprised and felt a little awkward as he revealed this information. She had been at him for a long time to cut down his schedule, but she never thought he would actually listen. The fact that he had actually listened and implemented some sort of regime to allow for time off meant was a big deal, and Emily didn't like to think it was all because of her comments. She sighed as the box imploded on itself and tried not to look to put out. It had been an industrial storage container, the strongest stuff she could find for commercial use, and though it was impressive that she had managed to crush it, it had not been her objective and hence she was not happy about it. She was just deciding what to do now when Mike's voice interrupted her revery. “You’re expanding your ability?” Emily smiled and glanced over at him, smiling widely at his apparent shock. She had always worked hard to fulfill every facet of her ability when they were in school, and she had been sure that she had explored every possibility open to her. Until she had found some old documentation suggestion that all abilities where connected through different neurons firing in the cerebral cortex. It had left her curious, and hence the secret visits to the forest, but so far unseccesful. At least in any large way. "Well, that is the idea, my success is arguable, but it's been fun!" Emily wondered if she should share the information she had found with Mike, but figured it would be better not to right that minute. "Um, I found some information that suggests ability expansion beyond anything we even imagined before. I mean, just think what we would be able to do if we can master any ability we wished!" Despite her intentions to keep it quiet, Emily couldn't help it, she was too excited. PLus it was Mike, he could be trusted not to say anything. SHe trusted him implicitly. |
