Kelly was annoyed. Annoyed may not have been a strong enough word, but she was too… annoyed to think of another one. She was sick of being treated like a little child just because she didn’t often feel the need to stand up and scream when people weren’t listening to her opinions.

Sighing, she began to climb the steps to the old tree house, but before she even got halfway one of the rungs gave out under her with a crack, and in a matter of moments Kelly found herself on her back on the floor under the very ladder she had just been climbing.

Doing a quick rundown to make sure she wasn’t injured, Kelly noticed something on the floor near her left foot. Sitting up, she lent over to examine it further. It was a book, an old ratty looking book. Curious, Kelly opened it up and looked inside.

What she found inside was enough to make her gasp in shock.

Smiling dutifully at a group of girls whispering and pointing in his direction, James Hatton slid his sunglasses firmly into place over his eyes and began the short walk from the café to the school. He was suppose to be meeting Ben for a practice session, but was not looking forward to it. He wouldn’t actually be doing any sparring, but Ben and Max would be, and James was only too aware as to how dangerous those to where when in the same room and in the mood for a fight. James was sure he would be ding more than healing the odd cut or scratch, and given Max’s wondrous ability for balance, it would be mostly Ben’s injuries James would be healing.

Which makes things a lot less interesting.

James didn’t actually like Max in that way, but she was gorgeous, and he would have had to be dead not to notice that much. As he made his way past the wood, James heard what he believed was a rather loud thump. Curious, he turned toward the wood to investigate further.

As he rounded the corner he saw Kelly lying on her back on the floor beneath the tree house, one of the rungs swung ominously suggesting she had just fallen. He reached out with his mind to see if she was injured, but she appeared to be fine. She obviously thought so too, for a moment later and she was sitting up, reaching for something by her foot.

“You ok Kellz?” James knew she was, but thought he better check anyway. Besides, it would take Ben a while before he would be hurting enough to admit he needed James’ help. He had time.

"You ok Kellz?”

Jumping slightly at the sound of James approaching, Kelly hurriedly hid the book in her jacket and pushed herself up onto her feet so she was in a crouching position, dusting off her hands and backside before standing and turning to face him with a small smile. She was still a little shocked at the thought of what she had read, and was having trouble string together enough words to assure him that she was fine. She opted for nodding and averted her eyes to her feet, wishing he would leave so she could take out the book again.

It seemed to be some sort of journal, but the one page she had read seemed more like a wrap sheet than a journal entry. Mentally running through the names of Hatton’s many residents, Kelly tried to imagine who it could be about, but was so far not connecting the dirty deeds she had read about to any of the innocent town dwellers she had known since she was born. Realizing James was still standing in front of her; Kelly looked up at him again and tried to look calm.

“I’m fine James, just a fall, nothing broken I should think.”

James noticed Kelly quickly hide whatever it was she had just been looking at, but decided not to say anything, as she was obviously in no mood to share it with him.

“I’m fine James, just a fall, nothing broken I should think.
James nodded his agreement, still a little concerned about his young friend’s well being, but not wanting to push the issue he simply cocked his head slightly and peered at her through lowered lids.

"Maybe I'll walk you home, just to be sure. I'm heading that way any how, and I wouldn't like to face your brother, or parents for that matter, should they hear I let their daughter wander around town after having just witnessed her fall."
James didn’t wait for her reply as he turned slightly, gesturing with his arms for her to walk ahead of him. He knew she would be irritated by his gallantry, but He also knew her well enough to know she wouldn’t hold a grudge or even be irritated at him by the time they reached her parents café

Scott was jolted into a state of half life, as it were, by the large thud that come from below. At first he rote it off as nothing, slowly realizing he had dosed off reading a rather boring chapter of a rather boring school book.

“You OK...?”

The sound of the muffled voice brought him to but he relaxed a little as he realized it wasn’t directed at him.

“I’m fine James, just a fall, nothing broken I should think.”

The sound of Kelly’s voice however brought him sitting bolt upright and sent a tingle up his spine, as it always did. She was, in his opinion, as close to perfect as a person could get. She was smart, smarter even than Scot,t witch was something special, and she had a way of making Scott feel safe even if she payed him little attention except for the fact that he was Nat’s little brother.

Always Nat’s little brother

"Maybe I'll walk you home, just to be sure. I'm heading that way any how, and I wouldn't like to face your brother, or parents for that matter, should they hear I let their daughter wander around town after having just witnessed her fall."

James' voice made it a little easier to stager out of the tree house drowsily.

"Hey guy's" he stuttered trying not to sound like he just woke up.

Kelly smiled politely, but wished all the same he would just go. She wanted to look further into the book she had found, but knew that once James put his mind to something there was no way around him.

Sighing softly, Kelly nodded and was about to follow after him when she heard another voice come form above her.

"Hey guy's"

Kelly almost jumped, but had trained herself too well for that sort of betrayal of emotion, so instead she looked calmly up toward where Scott's voice came from and smiled. Waving slightly Kelly wondered how long he had been up there, and if possibly the book she had per-chanced upon could be his.

"You should come down Scott; It is not as stable as it appears, as I have just had the pleasure of figuring out first hand."

Smiling again, and doing her best to appear embarrassed, (Though it was not in her nature to feel thusly) Kelly looked back down a James who seemed to be looking at her with much interest.

He can't have seen the book... Can he?

For some reason she was not quite sure of, Kelly did not want to share the information she had just happened upon with James or Scott for that matter. Actually, she wasn't sure who she should tell about it, for she had to tell someone.

Scott's sudden appearance, though unexpected, was not unwelcome. Kelly was a lot less controlled as usual, though it did take James' trained eye to notice. She was obviously put-out by his intrusion, and Scott only added to it, but they where her friends, and it was not as if they were there to make her feel uncomfortable. James simply wanted to be sure that she was okay, and He was sure scott felt the same. Watching the younger boy with a wide smile, James Motioned for him to join them, as Kelly did with her warning.

"Yeah Scott, It can be a bit treacherous up there, you don't want to hurt yourself." He chuckled a little to himself as he imagined Kelly's reaction to his comment, though he knew he would never see an evidence of any sort of reaction, it was still fun to picture.

Kelly seemed to be trying to hide something, and once again James' mind wondered to the item she had collected from the ground when she fell.

"Ah, Kelly. What you got there?" James hated to intrude, but she really did seem upset, and if it had anything to do with what she had found he only wanted to offer his help.

"Yeah Scott, It can be a bit treacherous up there, you don't want to hurt yourself."

Scott took this to mean that the thud he heard was Kelly falling as at that moment he almost fell due to the distinct lack of a rung from the ladder. Although he did manage to steady himself, and before anyone had noticed, he hoped.

"Yeah Scott, It can be a bit treacherous up there, you don't want to hurt yourself." Scott now wondered if this was a dig at him, Kelly or just a simple comment. he hoped it was the later. Scott caught up to them as they started to make their way down the path back toward town.

"Ah, Kelly. What you got there?" Scott was a little perplex at this as he could see nothing out of the ordinary that Kelly was carrying or had on any part of her personage. That didn't stop him trying to steal glance into Kelly's handbag and then immediately feeling terrible for letting curiosity get the better of him. He only hoped that she hadn't noticed, although he very much doubted she could have due to the fact that she was reeling form James' question, and seemed very tense.

Even that look's good on her

Kelly felt slightly annoyed but didn't think it was worth the effort of saying so. Instead she just watched as Scott made his decent form the tree house and smiled as he reached the ground and joined them on their walk back into town.

"Ah, Kelly. What you got there?'

Kelly couldn't hide her shock at that question. She had hoped that even if he had scene the book he would have refrained from saying anything until they were on their own. Unless he knew what it was of course? She decided honesty would be the best way to go.

"It is a book. I do not know who wrote it, but I have found it very interesting thus far."

She raised her eyebrows ever so slightly, daring him to say more as they rounded the corner and entered the main road.

James Hadn't realized Scott had been so close when he mentioned what he had seen to Kelly, and he felt terrible for bringing it up right then and there when she seemed so secretive about it, but the damage had been done and James was still curious as to what it was she hid.

"It is a book. I do not know who wrote it, but I have found it very interesting thus far."

James nodded and tried not to look too guilty at her discomfort. It had looked enough like a book that he believed her without to many problems, and her interest in what it contained peeked his own.

"A book? Not a study text then? What's it about? And why were you reading it on the floor?" James asked the questions in good humor, but they were all things he felt he needed to know. Well, he may not have needed to know, but he wanted to enough to not be to bothered if he sounded a little pushy.
