Do I need to worry about mites if I use either of these substrates? I'm thinking about using aspen shavings so that I can see the poo easier for spot cleaning. If I mist it a couple times a day will that be sufficient for keeping the humidity up? |

If your cage holds the humidity good enough then misting once or twice a day while using aspen is good. The only time you really need to worry about raising the humidity and misting good is right before and during shed. The rest of the time do not need to worry about the humidity as much.. The only problem with aspen I find is when it gets wet you will get mold. |

Ok thanks. Do you know if EcoEarth or ReptiBark are prone to mites? |

See, I never had any luck with bps on Aspen. They had crappy sheds and seemed to get more respiritory issues from the lack of humidity. The up side of Aspen, though, was how easy it was to treat for mites. Just spray the stuff down with Equate, fluff it up, let it dry and add the snake. Mites are gone within 2 days. Now, because ReptiBark and EcoEarth are usually kept somewhat damp, you are suceptible to mites, but, if they aren't there to begin with, you really shouldn't have too much of an issue. One thing you could do, and it requires a little more upkeep, is use Eco Earth as your primary substrate, then use some Aspen over certain areas. This will give som dryer spots and adds more texture which will give your animal something else to move around in and makes a bland floor a little more aesthetic. |

Cool thanks. I may use a combo then. I've heard you can bake the stuff in a turkey pan at 250 for a couple hours to before using to kill any parasites. Think that would work? |

I've never done it before, but I'd imagine it would work fine. Usually, if you get the blocks of EcoEarth and soak them down, they're just fine. Sprouted a mushroom, but never had an issue with any kind of bug. |

Thanks K. Guess the water would drown any mites that could possibly be already in the block. |

Once again I'm gonna promote Coco Soft but I think I'm the only one that likes it. Maybe I'm stuck in a world outside of the rest of the herp community. Oh well

Can you buy the coco soft anywhere besides online? Also, does it hold humidity well and have you ever had mite problems when using it? |

I pick it up at a local shop, so I know that it is available, whether it's around you I'm not sure. But even if you purchase it online I feel it's worth it. It looks good, smells good, holds humidity great, allows your herps to mold it to they're liking whether they like to burrow or just lay on top and its extremely easy to clean. Coconut husk is the best all natural substrate to use because of it's natural odor controlling capabilities. Not to mention you never have to worry about impaction. And no, never had a mite issue. Though I also regularly treat my snakes skins with an aloe solution which helps too. I'm a little biased if you can't tell.

Thanks for the info Aiden. I checked out their site, but it wouldn't give me the option to place an order. Just took me to a black page with the buy locally icon. I'll check back later. Maybe their site is just having problems. It's sort of like eco earth tho right...I mean it starts out with the same main ingredient I think. Anyway, does the poo hide as easily in it as it does in the other substrates in question? lol Easy clean-up without a total cage change every time would be nice. |

Depends on your snake whether it likes to burrow or just hang out on top. Mine do a little of both so sometimes its in plain veiw and you just pull it out other times you might have to dig around. |
