HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

So what does everyone think was the main cause of World War One?

Secret diplomacy, large militarism at the time, and M-Tag.

I'd say the main cause was the ambitions all nations had to take advantage of the situation of Austria-Hungary. ^_^

Tensions rising out of Africa, and old imperialist rivalries still with a ghost in the 1900's. I would also blame the fact that Europe was not the place it is today, with a model diplomancy. Back then, men were far more eager to come to arms over small things, and the assasination of Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo was a major trigger point.

Say..... what happened to Mr. Princip? I think he was killed by a firing squad, but to be honest, I don't know.

Well, What is the point of MAJOR arms build-up without a war right?
The heart should only exist to pump blood to the brain and rest of the body anything else is a waste of time and energy.

Love and Hate are only impediments to the human condition.

Imagine what could be accomplished if only the human race could shed our humanity.

When the facts change, my mind changes. What do you do, sir?

1. An imbalance of power between the European Powers.
2. German ambitions.
3. A long and complicated system of alliances.
4. Arms race between the powers.
5. Long histories of hatred.
6. Chaos in the Balkans.

@Ww2 nerd. Princip was to young to be executed at the time of the assasination. So they gave him the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He was held in harsh conditions which were worsened by the war. On April 28, 1918 he died of tuberculosis. At the time of his death, Princip weighed around 88 lbs. Weakened by malnutrition, blood loss, and diseases

I actually just read it the other day, and it all started when Austria-Hungary threatened to attack Serbia (who knows why? :P) with unlimited aid from Germany, and Russia, looking to try and extend its influence in the Balkans, readied its army to support Serbia.
And then the Triple Alliance and Triple Entitle (I think) set off a series of chain reactions so very quickly the Great Powers were mobalising for war.

Plus they had been itching for war since previous century (literally.)

Yikes! How could I forget about Germany's blank check to Austria. Also both Austria and Russia failed Germany's repeated requests that they 'make up' immediately. I've actually read the letters they sent to each other, ask me and I'll email anyone a copy of the letters.
