HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

Gerald Ford.

Weird.... I thought he was a democrat. I thought it was him, but because of that I didnt' say so.

Oh well, you learn something new every day.

by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold...
the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see...
was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee."

Actually, it's a two-headed eagle with a mounted man killing a serpent in the center.
It derives from Imperial Russia. More likely from the times of Peter the great. Only difference is that now the eagle is golden (like in medieval Russia) and not black. If you are asking "But who is Peter?" Well, he was one of the most important tsars of Russia (later named emperor). Peter established a policy of modernization and expansion that transformed the Tsardom of Russia into a major European power. Peter reorganized the Russian army and thought in making Russia a maritime power, he expelled the ottomans from the north of the black sea together with their forts, and realized great reforms on Saint-Petersburg.

Anyways, back to the coat of arms: Oh and, probably, Russia doesn't want a coat of arms related to communism due to politically pressure and criticism, so it thought in a more neutral coat of arms based in imperial/medieval Russia.

I remember something about making several travelling to western europe. More specifically, the dutch. He learned a lot about navy and marine in Holland, in the Dutch East India Company, the largest shipyard in the world (by that moment).

Considering that you have Reagan twice in your profile, I'm sure that's proof that Republicans still wry for another Republican leader like him

Yes he studied shipbuilding and marine in Zaandam and Amsterdam :)
He also based St Petersburg on Amsterdam(with all the canals etc.) and he introduced a whole bunch of Dutch words in Russian.

That is quite cool, thanks for the big image and explanation. I was familiar with the contributions of Peter the Great. He was definitely a great Rusian leader.

Intersting about the mounted man spearing the serpent. It reminds me of the British depictions of St george and the Dragon, which are quite similar. I wonder if there is a common mythology that links the two?

I'm not sure. I've had that avatar on one of my forums since the day I joined. Thought I'd bring it here.

Fixed. ;)

The Republican Party's long abandoned Reagan's values.
