HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

Quote:

NOAA, part of the Department of Commerce, is going to be providing information to individuals and decision-makers through a new NOAA Climate Service office. “More and more, Americans are witnessing the impacts of climate change in their own backyards, including sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters. People are searching for relevant and timely information about these changes to inform decision-making about virtually all aspects of their lives,” the release says.

Earlier snowmelt? That would be nice.

Turns out the release was planned prepared ahead of the snowstorm, which shut federal agencies today and forced its senders to hold a press conference by telephone instead of at the National Press Club.

It's a slow process.
Hence why it snuck up on us ignorant humans.
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun,
by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold...
the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see...
was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee."

Hmmmm, I do not really believe in global warming myself. I believe in worldwide climatic change. But not human-caused global warming.
Oh, and there are plenty of scientists who reject it, too:

I love how Wiki calls it mainstream, even after the numerous scandals, especially the CRU one.

Scandal shmandal.

Right-wing antics can't change scientific consensus.

My main belief stems from Dr. David Suzuki. He puts forth the argument really well, and is a recipient of Canada's highest civilian honor for his environmental work.

Not one of those people on the list is qualified to make a judgment on climate change. Geologists, chemists, mathematicians. Just because someone is a scientist doesn't mean they know everything about everything. Most scientists are specialized in a specific field, their knowledge beyond that is probably no more accurate than that of any other average person.

Agree. I just don't really want to search through google for 1 hour in order to find all the people specialized in that field who reject global warming. Anyways, I don't really reject it either, but I also believe in general climate change (i.e. not only global "warming"). E.g. didn't Washington just have one of it's biggest snowfalls in several years? Although, yes, I do agree that that doesn't really disprove global warming.
My other argument, is, that the world, though it's history, had a whole lot of different NATURAL climatic stages. And, according to statics, our emission is actually too little as to harm planet's earth atmosphere in such terrible way. I do agree that we may be very slightly contributing it, though. But I, in no way, could say that global warming is completely our fault.

Climatologists and geologists are the scientists we should be listening to. Climatologists know about climate, and geologists have the evidence to prove past climate patterns.

Key word: Belief.

I knew I should have avoided that term.
You know what I mean....

And even if global warming is a hoax, I still feel pursuing environmental measures would be a good idea, as we still do a shitload to screw this planet up.

That's what I like Suzuki for.
