HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

Then that's PPP. There's also HDI, accessibility to goods/services, stability, etc. etc., if you really wanna be precise about SOL, but to keep it simple, GDP/capita and PPP will suffice.

GDP as a whole matters a lot more than GDP per capita... right?

Rank in world Country GDP
10 Brazil $2,024,000 million
24 Argentina $558,000 million
29 Colombia $400,300 million
32 Venezuela $355,200 million
45 Peru $253,400 million
47 Chile $244,300 million
65 Ecuador $107,100 million
91 Bolivia $45,130 million
92 Uruguay $44,050 million
107 Paraguay $28,280 million
163 Suriname $4,182 million
172 Guyana $2,973 million

In that case Dragon, China has the 3rd highest standard of living in the world :P

Please tell me where I said anything about standard of living.

Well you said "matters more than" so I thought that you meant Standard of Living?

No... I was comparing countries, not people within those countries.

I don't believe GDP is more important than GDP per capita. The GDP of Sudan is higher than the GDP of Luxembourgh, but I'm sure Luxembourgh is a lot more important than Sudan.

PPP is impossible to calculate correctly. I don't believe economists go around Mexico asking landladies how much they charge for their apartments, or walk around corner tiendas asking the shopkeepers how much they charge for a bag of chips, a soda, or some marshmallows.

Okay, maybe Max didn't explain himself well enough...
But, seriously, do you really think Sudan is superior to Luxembourg (economically) because of having a higher GDP?

I don't really know, Ivan, but I wasn't talking about economic importance. Sudan is a lot more important than Luxembourg. I mean, a genocide was committed there! What's ever happened in Luxembourg?

Well from that point of view, I have to agree with you. However, economically, I believe GDP per capita is much more important than GDP.

You apparently don't understand what economics means.

The Sudanese need all their money to buy food at the local market. The people from Luxembourgh have enough money to buy 2 houses abroad per family, buy chocolates from Belgium, champagne from France, Ferraris from Italy and so on. Luxembourgh is the home country of a few very big banks and the transport company CargoLux. Luxembourgh has a lot indirect influence through the BeNeLux and the EU.

Speed skater Sven Kramer disqualified from 10,000-metre race at Vancouver Olympics for failing to switch lanes
By Charlie Smith
Sven Kramer is perhaps the most famous athlete in the Netherlands, so you can imagine the reaction when he was disqualified from the men's 10,000-metre speed-skating race at the Vancouver Olympics.

Kramer, a gold medallist in the 5,000-metre race, was given the wrong instructions by his coach and did not switch lanes at the appropriate time. He won the race, but lost the gold medal on the technical error.

Korea's Lee Seung-Hoon, the silver medallist at 5,000 metres, was awarded the gold. Russia's Ivan Skobrev won silver, and veteran Dutch skater Bob de Jong took the bronze.

FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I was watching it yesterday and I was sad :(

His coach sent him to the wrong lane, and afterwards you could hear him swearing "Goddamn he sent me to the wrong lane!". But it seems all the Olympic related Youtube videos are blocked hmmmm

Scion of the Midnight Sun

>:(

I would burn his house down. That isn't cool, losing because of a dumbass.

I feel bad for the figure skater who's mother died 3 days earlier.
She did really well considering the circumstances.
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun,
by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold...
the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see...
was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee."
