Yeah, but those are still stuck in the old days. Europe is supposed to be modern, yet you still have Queens, Kings, Lords and whatnot. What do the Kings and Queens do? Nothing. Why do they still exist? "Tradition." In other words, you're still stuck in the 18th century. |

The Queen is one of the most hard working people on earth. She gets paid very well(I think she can do it with less but whatever) for her hard work. The Dutch monarchy comes from the 19th century, the Scandinavian centuries from the Middle Ages and the toher monarchies are from before 1800 so not from the 18th century. And Europe is not supposed to be modern, we have enough castles and old cities around so you can't call that modern

Monarchs fulfill a lot of diplomatic functions, arguably as many as the elected heads of state. |

"There are strange things done in the midnight sun, by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold... the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see... was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee." - Robert W. No I'm not. But she has meetings all day long all over the world, her whole life long(!). Like WW2nerd said, it's like a president, but than worse. Not weird the Queen is getting health problems. |

Throwing parties for visiting leaders isn't hard work. |

The Queen hardly has any parties, parties are for presidents. She has only business meals, and she can never stay long cz she has to go to the next meeting. |

Alas, Americans have no idea of the historical beginnings of the right-wing and left-wing. Summary: The terms originated in the French Parliament shortly after the French Revolution. The monarchists, or conservatives, who sought to conserve the established order of having a king and an aristocracy endorsed by the church sat towards the right of the chamber. The liberals who wanted equal rights for all and special privileges for none sat towards the left of the chamber. Socialism was not even an issue back then. It was just assumed the government had to take charge of certain things such as healthcare, and nobody cared to oppose such a thing. |

@ Ivan, I support an English monarchy, as I feel it's a useful tool to differentiate us from the Americans. That, and I don't have to foot the bill, so it does me no harm. |

I think all that kings and queens are good for are smiling and waving, making a few token speeches every now and then and inspiring national pride, but if a people enjoy having them and they're doing nothing wrong, then there's no reason to abolish them. |

They should be abolished because no able-bodied person should have a free living without having earned it through work or contribution to society. They need to get off their asses and stop living off the teat of the taxpayers. Edited by Neitzluber, Feb 23 2010, 06:07 AM.

But the same could be said of children of incredibly rich people. Or people who won the lottery and invested it well. Or invented one thing and now live off that. Or life of royalties to IP. The list goes on. Not all rich people were, or are, contributing members of society. |
