HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

They look like Republicans. They're too stupid to just walk up.

I've seen this before, and it wasn't about two "Obama voters."

Oh, and this reminds me of the time when I was in my room and my brother turned the light off. I was stuck in the dark for hours!

What I really hate about the American political scene is how they generalize SO much, and don't bother to distinguish.

Just because you believe in a socialized government, doesn't mean you depend on them, or are lazy, or any of that other BS. I only believe in it because I feel it is a moral obligation to make sure those who can't afford the necessities are covered.
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun,
by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold...
the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see...
was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee."

It's an exaggeration. You know, those people think it's the government's job to provide money, housing, health care, education, etc. for every one. They depend on the government. So, when an escalator breaks down, they wait for someone to fix it for them too.

Yes, those people.
Key difference is I only believe that those who cannot afford it should be covered (For housing, education etc).
Some bad eggs will get in, but at least not everyone suffers.

Those who can pay should (except healthcare, that should be a universal right in my opinion). Well, they should pay for luxury surgeries regardless, but for the essentials, everyone should be covered, I think.

It should only be government responsibility to ensure an adequate style of living (where an individual can build themselves up from a secure base) not a comfortable style of living, if that makes sense. IE: Fat drunk at home shouldn't have enough government money that he can just sit on his ass all day, but a homeless person should at least be guaranteed a home, some clothes on their back, food, healthcare and vocational training if need-be.

Schools.... that's iffy. If the government can run a good program, I say make it public (like Alberta's. Remember: It's the students and Bill 44 I hate). If not, make it private, like in Mexico.

Uhhh... I know I sound like them, but it's hard to get by in text :\
Edit: I have it: The government should cover people to ensure the preservation of individual dignity. Not ostentatious luxury, but not wallowing in filth either.

I don't want the government to help me up the ladder, but I want it to make sure everyone starts at the bottom and has the same means to walk up on it.

It all sounds good and moral in theory, Rommel, but in practice, such government programs never/rarely work.

Well, education and healthcare have worked out very well for us, but for welfare, you're right. A lot of it is just mooches, not people who actually need it. Of course, our laws kind of let that bullshit happen, ie:
If you are fired and cannot find a job to your satisfaction at your former wage, you can remain on welfare indefinitely.

Public education? The post office? Social security, Medicare and Medicaid, which have bankrupted America? Need I go on?

Pretty much the only thing the US government can do right is the military.

Medicare and Medicaid
Yet you yourself admitted that if you're too poor to afford health insurance, there was always Medicare.

And Dragon, I believe that the government has a basic social responsibility to supply even the most basic of needs. If the government wont supply things like public transport or education, who will?

Is that why literacy made such a huge jump ever since governments started offering public education?

Where was the magical free market then?

Oh, yes, the magical hand of the free market had children do this instead:
