HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

It's also Canada's conservative stronghold, run by incompetent conservatives, busily working for the conservatives the Albertans elected in the federal elections who are busy fking up the country with their idiotic conservative policies.

Any questions?
When did Canada get so many stupid people?

Probably the last generation.
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun,
by the men who moil for gold; the arctic trails have their secret tales that'd make your blood run cold...
the Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see...
was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge, that I cremated Sam McGee."

Probably the last generation.
It always seems that way, doesn't it?
But if you look back in history, you'll find people were even more stupid and ignorant in the "good old days".

Heyday of Canadian politics was from 39-84.

The problem is, while more people as a whole have been educated today, the inclusion of everyone has also dragged down education in a lot of areas.

True that. It used to be, you either went to school till year 10, and if you were smart and wanted to go to college you'd complete year 12, or if you wanted to start a trade or an apprenticeship then you'd go and take technical training (called TAFE here.)

Now, it's almost unheard of for anyone to drop out at year 10.

They need to drop arts, literature, and sports.

The only things society needs taught at schools are grammar, mathematics, and science.

Literature and sports should be enjoyed as desired, not forcibly taught.

And history, economics and geography?

And literature for foreign languages?

It all sounds good and moral in theory, Rommel, but in practice, such government programs never/rarely work.
Yes, but no government works in practice; especially not ours. Our system was designed to destroy political parties; now we're divided between two superparties. The President was meant to be basically a figurehead, hardly ever talked about; now he is the symbol of America and everything it represents. The Founding Fathers warned us against making alliances; now we're basically in control of the world's politics.

Our whole system has failed. But at least it's a system that works. What I would like to see is socialism being used in a responsible manner. How about instead of using tax money to help the unfortunate (or lazy) buy food, we just use it to open up volunteer-run, not-for-profit soup kitchens? Charities do it for the poor and homeless, why not the government?

It's just a matter of finding an indirect way to help people, one that won't compete with private enterprises.

Nonesense.

The public school system needs to offer all fields there is a demand for. This includes literature because sensible parents don't want their children to be complete uncultured idiots. Science or the higher maths are, for that matter, while important, no more helpful to many jobs than the liberal arts are.

Sports are merely an effort to help keep prosterity from becoming obese, though I might agree, especialy by highschool, it becomes a waste of time and should be dropped.

While I agree that the focus of education should mostly be on grammar, math, and science, I don't think art, sports, and literature (which, by the way, is a form of art) ought to be completely done away with. They're pretty important: sports teach people a lot about working together as well as thinking on their feet (no pun intended); art is, first of all, fun and it also promotes creativity, imagintation, and abstract thinking (all of which are important parts of scientific advancement); literature plays a role in understanding language as well as history, as it is a way of recording the values and ideas of the culture and/or civilization in which it occurs.

You can't just focus on a single subject or group of subject when it comes to education, they're all related to each other.

I honestly believe that sports are less effective at preventing obesity that old-fashioned physical education, for the simple reason that if children are only taught to work out and stay fit with the team, what happens when they are out of school and there is no team?

Answer: Ask all the middle aged, overweight ex-soccer (maybe ex-football) players who frequent their children's sporting events.

Sometimes the teachers themselves are overweight. How's that for setting an example!
