HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

Two Britons have been sentenced to a month's imprisonment for indecency after a local woman took objection to them kissing in a restaurant.

Ayman Najafi, 24, a marketing consultant who lives in Dubai, and Charlotte Adams, 25, an estate agent from North London, were said to have been touching each other and kissing passionately as they dined with friends in a beachfront restaurant.

They were arrested and sentenced to a month in prison after which they were told they would be deported.

But the pair told a hearing at the Dubai Appeal Court on Sunday that they were the victims of a "huge misunderstanding" and had simply exchanged a friendly greeting.

"We kissed each other on the cheek as a greeting, nothing more,” Mr Najafi told Judge Aysar Fouad. Miss Adams pointed at her cheek to show where contact had taken place.

The two are not the first Britons to fall foul of the strict laws in the conservative Muslim state. Last year Michelle Palmer, 36, and Vince Acors, 34, were sentenced to three months imprisonment for having sex on a beach.

Whilst to us in the West and I personally disagree with this, it is a different place with a different set of customs and beliefs. Were I to go there for an extended period of time, then I would make an effort to keep my behaviour in the socially acceptable levels of the place.

I am not saying that it is there fault that they should go to jail, but it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

I don't see how the fact that "it is a different place with a different set of customs and beliefs" makes it alright. Did you not once claim that we should promote human rights everywhere by whatever means possible, including military force? And did you not once say that, should your country be destroyed, you would live in either the UAE or Saudi Arabia?

Yes, I did. I never said I would enjoy living there, only that I would most likely be the most logical place to go. (However since then I have decided I wouldn't want to go to Saudi Arabia. Bahrain would probably be the best option.)

And I never said I agree with those beliefs. Did you not see the part were I said that "to us in the West we disagree with this stuff?" Of course I would much prefer it to have more liberal, less oppressive laws, but the fact still remains that it IS a different place, and unless they have some sort of counter-culture comparable to the American Hippy movement, then it's unlikely to change.

These people were in the UAE by choice, not by necessity, so as a result should understand that the place they are in is (evidently) not the same as where they're from. Whilst the woman was probably grossly overexaggerating, if it were me in that situation I would've been more cautious.

Plus finally, what do you propose we do Dragon? Break in and free these citizens from Jail? Tell the Emirati government that it isn't free to make their own laws?

How is it okay to do something like that to someone for a public kiss on the cheek? "Different culture"? I don't see how that justifies it. Maybe you also feel that way when Saudi women are stoned for the littlest of "crimes", because, hey, it's "a different culture"? That's moral relativism, bubba.

You're the one who proposed that, actually.

Yes, why not? What will they do to stop us? Counties like that always call us Americans imperialists, so we might as well start acting like it. I think we should literally just conquer countries like Turkey and Egypt where there laws are clearly violating human rights. We Americans have emerged into the light of freedom, and now it's our job to spread this day everywhere and banish the darkness from human civilization. And if that means destroying entire cultures and religions, so be it. Freedom is worth an ocean of blood. :gun:

But in all seriousness, I do support aggressive military action against cases like this. You can't just fuck around with another country's citizens and not expect to receive a few bombs.

Why not both? I have never had Belfiun beer, though, so we need to start with Belgium.
