HISTORY IN THE MAKING 2008-2016

Good luck!

We've spent a good many years discussing politics, life, society and history. Most of all, the makers of history. The great events that changed the world - people, places, actions. Small acts have changed its hard-worn course, and effort and circumstance can make of its small actors immortal greats. In line with that sentiment, it seems pertinent now to recognize the potential of those who've made up this community for years, obvious through their contributions to the spirited debate and discussion that has proceeded here. HITM has sadly gone silent, though perhaps not lacking for things to say about making history, but rather for the realization that it is time we all commenced to do so, and make our mark.

Good luck to you all, see you in the history books!

Two female suicide bombers attacked Moscow’s subway system this morning, killing themselves and 37 other passengers in a terrorist attack. Not a lot of details are known at this time, but Russian security suspects that Islamist rebels in the Caucasus are responsible for the murders:

Quote:

Two female homicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow’s subway system as it was jam-packed with rush-hour passengers Monday, killing at least 37 people and wounding 102, officials said.

The head of Russia’s main security agency said preliminary investigation places the blame on rebels from the restive Caucasus region that includes Chechnya, where separatists have fought Russian forces since the mid-1990s.

The first explosion took place just before 8 a.m. at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. The station is underneath the building that houses the main offices of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, the KGB’s main successor agency.

A second explosion hit the Park Kultury station about 45 minutes later.

Emergency Minister Sergei Shoigu said the toll was 37 killed and 102 injured, but he did not give a breakdown of casualties at each station, according to Russian news agencies.

CNN says the attacks bear the hallmarks of Chechen “Black Widows,” a known group of female terrorists:

Quote:

Monday’s bomb attacks on the Moscow subway bear the hallmarks of an operation carried out by female Chechen suicide bombers called “Black Widows,” according to security analysts. …

The use of women as suicide bombers or “Black Widows,” is one way in which the struggle in Chechnya is different from al Qaeda and more analogous to the military campaign waged by the IRA in Northern Ireland, says Ayers.

“This war is politically motivated, it is not about a religious ideology as in the case of al Qaeda, so everyone participates and it is ultimately irrelevant if you are a man or a woman,” said Ayers.

“They are not like al Qaeda who might say women should be hidden away and have no role in attacks.”

The “Black Widows” are believed to be made up of women whose husbands, brothers, fathers or other relatives have been killed in the conflict. The women are often dressed head-to-toe in black and wear the so-called “martyr’s belt” filled with explosives.

That’s not quite true. AQ has been known to use women in their attacks, mainly in Iraq. AQ has also used burqas as a ruse to hide men. While the Chechnyan conflict started off as a political rebellion, it has been an Islamist affair for most of the last several years. The “Black Widows” took part in the infamously botched seizure of a Moscow theater in 2002, when Russian authorities gassed the hostages and terrorists in an attempt to disable them, but wound up killing many of them instead.

The Russians are looking for the other two women who accompanied the terrorists, but the question may be whether more attacks are coming.

I saw a documentary on that. At one point, they also took control of a school, and some black widows detonated in the middle of the children :(

Sad what happened :(
They always have to take the metro or other forms of public transport :(

@WW2nerd: I think that doc was about the school hostage in Beslan?

Ahh yes. I heard about this and was thinking of making a thread on it. But, even though it is a tragic loss of human life and should've been avoided at all if possible, this is not the first time that something like this has happened in trouble-plagued Russia (in fact, it was only in November that a bomb detonated on a train heading to St. Petersburg from Moscow.)

So, whilst it is news, it's nothing really unexpected, as terrible as that sounds. I think this is just the violent reminder of the current on many problems that Russia faces.

Yes, it was the Chechens that took over the school in Beslan.

I'd be interested to hear what Oddball and our other current and former Russian members think of the Chechen situation. I imagine we all hate the idea of terrorism, of course. I mean politically. Should they be allowed to form their own nation? Is that even a rational idea? From what I have read recently, the Muslim Chechens don't want just a homeland anymore; they want to form an Emirate of the Caucasus, and take over the whole region.

Anyway, any insights from those of you who would know more than us uninformed Westerners?

Have you noticed that most terrorist attacks these days are committed by Muslims?

Terrorism really is one area that could use more religious diversity.

You know, ignoring lord's resistance Army, which has been committing regular atrocities in the name of Christianity for oh, 20 years?

Just to name one. They simply aren't reported.

Because the Muslim must be vilified at all costs! Down with the evil of Islam! Crusade and slaughter them all, leave none of those evil people alive!

Abducting, killing and raping over 20,000 children, but that's not bad, because they're just Christians. You know, that's a typical thing to do.

Or those 1324 innocent people killed by those wonderful Christians just last year.

If only I could be a wonderful Christian, not one of those evil Muslims.

How many terrorist attacks were committed by Christians for religious reasons in 2009? How many by Muslims?

In the event we don't count offensives against soldiers, the Christians have far more, from the LRA alone.

They do something almost daily, on a small scale, and like that article I posted shows, they do a lot of big stuff too.

Look, that's just from what I've heard reported.

So, no official statistics or counts?

And Muslim terrorists rarely attack soldiers. The overwhelming majority of terrorist attacks are aimed at civilians.

Exactly. The LRA attacks primarily civilians too.

That seems to be a standing pattern among terrorists.

I was simply ruling that out, as I figured you'd try and count those too.

Tell you what, make my life a little easier. You find an exact count for the Muslims, and I'll see what I can do about the Christians.

In the media, I've heard of twelve to twenty attacks in 09, at best, for the Muslims.
The LRA launches one almost every other day.

At any rate, my friend is waiting for me to join him, so I'll deal with this later.

This is the latest count, from 2008:

2008 Worldwide Deaths from Terrorist Attacks, by Perpetrator Category

Posted Image

Source: National Counterterrorism Center, 2008 Report on Terrorism.

As you can see, a majority (8,284) of deaths were the result of Islamic terrorist attacks, while only 932 deaths were the result of Christian attacks.

The LRA is hardly a Christian organization. They don't even come close to traditional Christian theology. They are a combination of African pantheism, with some Christianity and other wierd stuff thrown in. Saying the LRA is Christian is like saying Santa Ria is Christian because they have elements of Catholicism in their ritual.

That said, they certainly aren't Muslim. I'm not sure I would characterize them as strictly terrorists, though. I'll have to look deeper into the Uganda situation and post more when I get back next week.

This is one case where I feel a little bad for the terrorists. I mean, the official position of the Russian government is literally "we will hunt them down and destroy them." Yes, they said destroy; not capture, not defeat, but destroy. And if Russia wants to destroy something, they'll do it.
