I am looking to go and view the hobby range and im trying to locate the nearest one to me. I live in macclesfield cheshire. i think it may be lancashire. i have phoned them but there is no reply.. Also a bit of advice. i have looked through all the hobby models and am trying to locate a 640 VIP 2008yr. but have not had any sucess. This van is advertise on ebay actually and looks very attractive. Any ideas where i may be able to find out the details about this model. I have read on this site that on most suppliers that they are not interested in taking a hobby as a trade in at a conventional dealer. I at the moment have a Swift conqueror and am looking to change. How do you sell the hobbys when the time comes is it only privately??? |

Most normal dealers will just not accept Hobby's at any price and Hobby dealers will only take them in part ex at ridiculously low prices..Don't let this put you off...They DO sell..Ebay is excellent for selling them, there are nutters on there that will pay £2,000 or £3,000 over and above what they are worth ( for example a 1998 Hobby 710 brought £4,800 a couple of weeks back.... trade in on this van is around £1000/£1500 on a good day if you were lucky )....Autotrader magazine runs a " sister magazine " called Caravantrader which comes out once fortnight..The UK specials do not appear in the Hobby catalogue but have a small separate advertising leaflet with the details on..these are available from Hobby dealers..Watch out for ex travellers vans, they are lived in 24/7 and often suffer from what I would call accelerated wear..The 640 on Ebay does look to be in nice condition but my advice would be don't buy anything until you have physically inspected it..I spotted an incident a few year ago on Ebay where someone was selling a Hobby but the photographs he was using were from a caravan that had been for sale by someone else a couple of weeks earlier..It's not all doom and gloom but there are con artists out there, you just need to able to spot them Cheers Hobbynut Edited by Hobbynut, Mar 31 2009, 06:27 PM.

Why are they so difficult to exchange even with a hobby dealer.?? Have you seen the one on ebay 640VIP?? Do you know where i can find a floor plan for it? Do you move your van arround or is it sited. I would be using mine for most weekends away being a member of the cheshire centre caravan club. Are there any common problems that i need to be mindful of as most vans are known for their faults. I did read about loosening the back and possible front panel and use spacers to separate the materials. I have a trooper 3.1 long wheel base what do you feel about these for towing the hobbys. i was speaking to a hobby owner on a rally as i was actually admiring his supendous set up and he towed his with a trooper and said he did not experiance any problems with the combination. Sorrry for bombarding you with loads of questions but its nice that you spend the time to reply. Andrea |

Sadly it would be illegal to tow a 640 with a Trooper 3.1td in the UK..However you pays your money and you takes your chance...Uk dealers look at them as Gyppo vans..some may find this comment offensive but thats one reason..another is that the large ones are illegal to tow with a normal vehicle and therefore hard to sell..Some dealers think that they are poor spec...no 12volt and battery as standard..pathetic water heater and also British van dealers tell me that they are not impressed with the build quality..Another problem I have listed all over is the massive price increase due to the exchange rate with the Euro/Pound..If you order spares then some of them could arrive within 6 to 8 weeks or maybe longer and can be very expensive Cheers Hobbynut |

Many thanks for your reply. Are the van not opererable on 12v then. Does that mean that you have to invest in a generator or go on mains always. Are any of the vans adapted for 12v? Cheers |

Some parts of the van such concealed lighting, toilet flush etc are run on 12 volt via a mains transformer..or to put it another way, you couple up to the mains supply and it runs everything, you get a power cut and you have nothing, no lights..just nothing at all..very inconvenient...Hobby's are supplied like that but when ordering a new one you can have a 12 volt battery system fitted as an optional extra at the factory...You could also have one fitted by any good caravan repair specialist..I have occasionally run my Hobby on a Honda generator without any problem Cheers Hobbynut |
