Hello again,
I've been missing from the site for a few weeks as I have been researching Hobby caravans. I am still looking to buy one but nothing yet. I came across this dealer on the internet - B&M Trading UK Ltd - and wonder if you know anything about them, they are near Leicester.

I may be interested in a van they have Hobby 570 UK, they also have a 570 VIP. I cannot find reference to a 570 model anywhere. Is this a UK special or something unusual? I want to buy a van to take to my home in France where big Hobbys are not illegal to tow with a suitable car. I have a Honda CRV 2.2 deisel so no problem. The problem is French registration. I need extensive Hobby specs for registration and wondered if this was an unusual model if that would be difficult. All help and comments most welcome. Thanks in advance.
Neil.

You will not find any reference to certain Hobby's in the brochure, like the one you mention also 690's and the like..They are UK Specials and come advertised in a small brochure/leaflet for UK market only..The Honda CRV may be OK in France but it's certainly illegal in the UK..You really need to contact Hobby Uk for info on specs

B & M are not official Hobby Dealers and haven't been dealing in Hobby's for that long..but list below gives official dealers

There are two types of Hobby dealer..A proper one and the one thats out to make a fast buck...lots of dubiuos characters have been going abroad, buying Hobby's, bringing them back to the UK and calling themselves Hobby dealers..Most of them have played at it for a couple of years or until the police and trading standards have caught up with them..Hopefully this will now stop due to the exchange rate not making these grey imports a viable proposition anymore..Having been around Hobby's for a while now, I have seen these people come and go..One of the biggest dealers in Hobby's and German caravans a few years back was West Chilton Caravans up near Durham run by a gypsy called Noah ......., I have had to put dots as he had around a dozen different names and I never actually found out what the real one was..He is currently serving a long jail sentence for numerous offences.
If I was to go out today to buy a Hobby I would go to what was J & G Trading in Dunfries in Scotland, which is now Joe Horsfall & Partners..They have been at it a long time and couple of friends of mine have had vans from them and the aftersales backup was 1st class.

D & S no longer appear as official dealers according to Hobby's German website..They still have a number of vans for sale both at the premises and on Ebay.,.If you contact them then I would speak to Duncan, a very nice helpful young fella..However his father is not quite so helpful..they are only a few miles up the road from me and I do pop in every now and again to see whats going on...The family are related to JG Trading in Scotland and originally worked out of Caranaby Industrial Easte at Bridlington under the name of JG Trading..A couple of year ago they closed down at Bridlington, relocated to Warley Cross and changed their name to DS Trading ??

B&M Trading UK Ltd - we have just bought a 2nd hand 635 from here and yes, they are settled travellers. I know there are some travellers out there who give other travellers a bad name but you find this in all walks of life/communities. We found B&M Trading UK to be fine, whether or not they are official dealers or not, the caravan we purchased was very reasonable priced and very clean - in fact all it had only been used to sleep in. Something which suited us down to the ground as it feels like a brand new van and all we have had to do is replace the mattress and take off the plastic coverings on the cushions.
We checked the registration number with the Hobby dealer and also did a HP check, which can back ok. So we took the chance like any of us who buy 2nd hand goods from any private sale. We are not expecting any warranty with the van etc
Having said that we have fallen in love with the van!! We have used it once and we can't find anything to fault other then to replace some faulty light bulbs.
We did tow it to a site where we will have it stored full-time. Whether or not we will do it again is another thing ;-). We took advice from a very good friend who is a traffic cop and even informed him that we thought we would be towing it illegally but we do have a beast of a range rover and my partner does have his HGV class 1 licence. Advice given was to put a notice on the rear of the van to say "long vehicle". Very much of a grey area????
Anyway - we love our 635 SMF UK

Thanks JDee, The lady I spoke to at B&M was very pleasant and helpful but I am looking elsewhere for now. Enjoy your Hobby, it sounds lovely.
