Hi All,
This evening I became the proud owner of a 640. I looked long and hard and found what I was after on ebay. Fortunately the seller lives 20 mins from me and presented many pieces of paper to prove ownership, warranty and retrofitted parts and servicing etc. So everything stacks up well on the ownership front.

The only reservation I have is the weight and size of the van. Having looked at my vehicle handbook, it appears the towing capacity is 3500kg and the gross vehicle weight 3200 kg, applying the 85% rule I should be good for 2720kg, fine so far.

Now the other sticky point, 8 feet width. (Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong). In order to tow a trailer in excess of 7'6" the towing vehicle gross weight should be 3501kg minimum (ie a commercial vehicle). My car is probably more capable of towing the van than say, a Transit. My question is therefore, do the police actually measure the width of caravans and issue tickets for non complience with the law ?

HI, just bought my 560 ufe on saturday, i like many others know that it is wrong to tow a 8ft van with a car/4x4 according to british law.

Here is my thoughts on this.
1.I have a european driving license.
2.We are part of europe whether we like it or not.
3.I will have the first person to stop me, infront of a european court of human rights faster than their tape measure retracts.

The upshot here is what is plod or any one else actually going to do? ;)

cheers

John.

This crops up time and time again...You are right, it is illegal and thats it...As for European Court, save your money, have already checked with a solicitor and been advised that that line is a no go ...So you pays your money and takes your chance..possibilities are that you get done for no insurance..police not a real problem but VOSA are and they don't need a tape measure they already know that any Hobby model above a 540 is 2.5 metres wide..Only real incident that I am aware of is a guy pulling an oversized Hobby with a Toyota Landcruiser, had an accident and both insurers pulled out on him and left him high and dry, no car and no caravan..So back to sqaure one..You pays your money and you take your chance.

However please note that it is NOT the policy of this website to encourage people to break the law

Just one point in relation to the first post..The 85% guideline is 85% of the Kerbweight or Unladen Weight.... NOT 85% of the Gross Vehicle Weight

Cheers
