Just in case you missed it... From the The Voice: KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES By Chavez Christmas comes early at the box office. Some of the season’s biggest films are released in late November to take advantage of the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas holiday season, during which the best films can profits in a matter of days rather than weeks. One of the biggest and most expected films is The Montana Joneses, produced by MC48 of Nu/Art Films and set to be released by 21st Century Cat Pictures on Nov. 26. I had the opportunity to tour the set and talk with the studio heads Dominatin MVP and Zero, as well as meet with Mc48. Nicholas Cage, Rory Culkin and Lindsay Lohan highlight this family film set, obviously enough, in Montana as a treasure-hunting family attempts to find the hidden treasure Charlie Faust wrote about in his diary more than a hundred years earlier. They have only the clues from his diary, and they’re not even sure if those are real, as they plunge deep into Montana caves. Spencer Breslin, Justin Theroux and Johnny Knoxville also star in the picture. “It's got everything from rapids to volcanoes, from forests to caves,” Mc48 enthused on the set. “From history to the present, Indians to thieves, gold rushers to anthropologists, heroes and villains, chases and fights, traps and treasure, plus numerous homages to those great adventure films of yore. Most importantly, though, the film completely family-friendly.” Rather than use a familiar franchise, Mc48 chose to create characters of his own and put them in a PG-rated film that the whole family could enjoy, melding his favorite aspects of The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Indiana Jones series. He was careful to keep The Princess Bride in mind too, as he wondered why films like that are not made anymore. “In terms of the plot, though, who doesn't like heroes, adventures, and treasure hunts?” Mc48 asked. “And if that isn't enough, adults in the audience can look out for the plethora of references to older beloved adventure films of the ’80s while kids can look forward to Rory Culkin and Spencer Breslin's child characters kicking adult butt, while quipping the entire way.” While Mc48 had been working on the film for a while, it was a quick decision for the studio when they read his working draft of the project. Dominatin MVP said he and partner Zero knew right away this was their film to roll through the holidays. “When MC48 sent us his The Montana Joneses script, it was completely different than everything we've been reading,” Dom said in his studio’s West Coast office. “The film was very well written combining elements of family, suspense and comedy into the ultimate childhood adventure. And when better to release such a great product than Thanksgiving weekend?” Zero’s enthusiasm for the film could clearly be seen on the set. One moment, he’s yelling at Gore Verbsinski, the next, he’s chatting up Lohan between scenes, trying to set something up for the weekend. While I was crossing the set, he came bounding through and started jumping all over pieces with Culkin and Spencer. Mc48 turned to me at that moment, exasperated: “It's like he wants to damage the production so that we can say that the film has a "massive, $200-plus million blockbuster budget.” But if the story is as good as we expect, whether the studio spends $200 or half that amount won’t matter, as we’ll be drawn in by the story. The production crew and actors certainly enjoyed themselves in making it. The day after Thanksgiving, we shall find out if we enjoy ourselves as much in watching it.
