FADE IN:

Jonathan (TIM ROBBINS), a middle-aged and sickly man, sits in front of a large desk in a handsomely decorated office.

Bill Davison (KENNETH BRANAGH) sits behind the desk, studying Jonathan closely. There is a slight smirk across his face. Jonathan appears to be deep in thought.

BILL
Well, Jonathan? Have you thought of a place?

Jonathan blinks, reorienting himself with the world.

JONATHAN
What?

BILL
A place. The place were you were happiest. Have you thought of it yet?

JONATHAN
How is this going to help the AIDS?

BILL
Maybe it won’t help the AIDS, but it could help you. Where were you happy?

There is a long pause. Jonathan is reluctant to answer.

JONATHAN
(Muttering)
I don’t know… Oz. I was happy in Oz.

FADE TO:

A young Jonathan (JACK ROVELLO) is immersed in the rich colors of the poppy fields of Oz. He stands just at the edge of the field, looking down in wonder at the bright yellow brick that lies ahead of him.

Dorothy and her friends are marching toward the Emerald City just a few feet in front of him. He calls out, telling them to wait for him.

Dorothy, as played by Judy Garland (Emily Browning), turns and immediately smiles a heart-warming smile.

JONATHAN
Can I come too?

DOROTHY (JUDY GARLAND)
Why, of course you can.

Her smile growing, she reaches out an open hand to him.

A car. Ira (PETER SARSGAARD) drives with a stone cold look on his face. Jonathan, looking extremely ill and weak, is seated in the passenger seat. He looks at Ira from time to time, but does not say a word.

IRA
You used to be a pretty bright guy, you know?

JONATHAN
I know. I just get confused sometimes, Ira.
(No reponse)
Ira?

Ira is cold and quiet.

Will seek solace in a memory…
Ira watches in amazement as Jonathan steps out of the car and eagerly runs toward an old-fashioned house, taking picture after picture with a camera. Ira looks down both sides of the street; he can see no one.

IRA
Jonathan, what are we doing here?

JONATHAN
(To himself)
It’s all just like it was back then…

Ira frowns and looks back in the car. Something there catches his eye. A small book has been laid open on the floor of the car on Jonathan’s side.

Ira opens the door and reaches for the book. A small black-and-white picture of the very same house is on the page that the book is open to.

Frowning with confusion, Ira closes the book and examines the front cover. It is a biography of Judy Garland.

BILL (V.O.)
I got to know a woman at the local nursing home who was about eighty-something. She thought she was Dorothy Gale.

CUT TO:

Jonathan and Bill sit at a small kitchen table. Jonathan’s face is sweaty, but his eyes are intense.

JONATHAN
From Oz.

BILL
Turned out that she was. She knew Frank Baum. She was from a farming community called Zeandale, near a place called Manhattan, Kansas.

And uncover the key
A small hotel room. A pretty young girl named Angel (ELISHA CUTHBERT) reads to Jonathan as he sleeps. She pauses. His breathing is still rather fast and shallow.

ANGEL
“After the Angel of Death descended, an exhalation of my sister’s perfume was sent to us, a sweet child, her daughter, Dorothy.”

Jonathan’s eyes pop open. He is unable to move.

To his deepest desires…
JONATHAN
Where? Where is she?

Jonathan snatches the book away from Angel. He begins searching through them on his own, his energy immediately refilled.

JONATHAN
She’s got to tell us where she lived!

Suddenly, he stops. His face lights up.

CUT TO BLACK.
JONATHAN (O.S.)
(Excitedly)
I got her! I found Dorothy!

I just read this film, and I gotta say, it's phenomenal. Brilliant piece of work Newman, I'm sure those awards will look cracking on your mantle (if I may brazenly steal a line).
