Next Friday See the film That has everyone talking... "WAS is the Anti-Oz. It takes Frank Baum's original story, turns it on its head, and beats it black and blue until the fantasy becomes reality and its realism is the single most reason I enjoyed the film..." -Sureshot FADE IN: A small train station, almost as deserted as the airport. The single railroad track is met by a small station with a tiny platform. Inside the station there is a single bench and a ticket booth. Nothing else. Everything is dusty and dirty, and looks years older than it actually is. A young girl with plain brown hair (DAKOTA FANNING) turns to face a figure in the doorway of the ticket booth. It is the figure of a woman (HOPE DAVIS), hunched over and supported by a walking cane. She carries a woven basket in her arm. Her name is Etta. ETTA Are you the little girl who’s waiting for her aunt? The girl warily nods her head. ETTA My name’s Etta, what’s yours? GIRL Dorothy. Dorothy Gael. "A masterpiece... Can't be forgotten..." -Ste300 FADE IN: Jonathan (TIM ROBBINS), a middle-aged and sickly man, sits in front of a large desk in a handsomely decorated office. Bill Davison (KENNETH BRANAGH) sits behind the desk, studying Jonathan closely. There is a slight smirk across his face. Jonathan appears to be deep in thought. BILL Well, Jonathan? Have you thought of a place? Jonathan blinks, reorienting himself with the world. JONATHAN What? BILL A place. The place where you were happiest. Have you thought of it yet? JONATHAN How is this going to help the AIDS? BILL Maybe it won’t help the AIDS, but it could help you. Where were you happy? There is a long pause. Jonathan is reluctant to answer. JONATHAN (Muttering) I don’t know… Oz. I was happy in Oz. "The films brings together a remarkable amount of courage and fearlessness that audiences won’t forget..." -Ste300 FADE IN: A small trailer in 1939. Millie (RADHA MITCHELL) is busily applying make-up to a young and healthy Judy Garland (EMILY BROWNING). Judy stares ahead of herself blankly. JUDY We got driven out to Lancaster in a studio limousine to Muggsie’s house, and my mother sat in the car so I wouldn’t stay too long. A pause. A slightly sardonic smile crosses Judy’s lips. She continues with a certain bite of viciousness. JUDY Just before we were about to leave, I leaned out of the car and gave Muggsie a photograph. Just some photograph of me that I wrote something on for her. And you know what? My mother got mad at me. She said I shouldn’t give away a professional photograph like it was a snapshot. To my best friend. A hatred in Dorothy’s eyes flames. Millie sees it, but doesn't say a word. JUDY She’s the real Wicked Witch of the West. "The performances in each segment are stirring, bordering on amazing." -JGraham Dorothy (DAKOTA FANNING) and Em (SISSY SPACEK) in their farmhouse. Em is sitting near Dorothy in her bed. Dorothy doesn't acknowledge her presence. Tears begin to gather in Em’s eyes. AUNT EM What happened, Dorothy? What happened to you? You were such a beautiful little girl. Come back... you were the light of my life. Cut to Dorothy in a schoolhouse. She stands at the head of the class, shakily reading from a paper she wrote. Frank Baum (BRENDAN FRASER) sits at the desk behind her, listening silently. DOROTHY “I have a little dog called Toto. He is a terrier which means that he has short wiry hair and is gray. He waits for me every day when I come home. When he sees me he comes running. He jumps up and down. I can hear him barking." "Fanning's performance as Dorothy deals with incredibly mature and demanding thematic material.. It is a flawless, tortured performance... A superb, career defining role..." -JGraham Jonathan and Ira (PETER SARSGAARD) sitting in a small den. The mood between them is extremely somber. JONATHAN (Quietly) You should take the test. IRA I’m not taking that test. JONATHAN Because you said that whatever the result, you had to do the same thing. No casual sex and look after your health. No point taking it, you said, unless you would do something different depending on the result. Well, if you take the test and by any chance you’re negative, then we both will have to be a lot more careful, huh? That’s a good reason for you to take the test. Ira stops. He knows that he’s trapped. IRA (Decisively) Maybe. He turns away. "Tim Robbins as the AIDS stricken actor, is phenomenal... I hate predicting awards sweeps inside reviews, but regarding the Best Supporting Actor nom, he's nailed it..." -JGraham "Robbins and Fanning both give highly admirable performances as the lost souls wanting an old life. And a different reality. " -Ste300 Judy Garland has now been joined by her mother Ethel (KATHY BATES) in her trailer. Judy stares ahead with a dark look, tears welling in her eyes. Ethel seems to find satisfaction in that. ETHEL You want me to fail. You want me unhappy. What am I supposed to do? Stay and hold your hand when you have the same problems? Be your mommy when all you do is tell me I’m in the way? When am I supposed to go when I see that evil light come into your eyes and I know you’re about to snap? (Pause) All women are wounded, Judy Garland. You’ll be just like the others; you’re no different... you're just like the others. "(Was also has) a fantastic and highly emotional conclusion... See it!" -Sureshot "The climax is shattering..." "'Was' is quite simply, the finest film this game has produced. Read it." -JGraham A brief image of four familiar figures moving joyfully toward a towering structure of emerald that lies in the distance. UNITED FILMWORKS INC. presents a TOP HAT STUDIOS production of a FRANK DARABONT film ![]() Now we can cross the Shifting Sands... BUZZ VOTING NOW OPEN |
