In "Hot Coco," three gangs clash.

Juicy's Gang

Run by a former stripper, Juicy's crew rules most of the Los Angeles
strip clubs, gambling rackets and nightclubs.

The Mexicans

Bunuel, Juicy's former number 1, heads the Mexicans, who control a large
chunk of the drug traffic in Los Angeles, and are moving into Juicy's clubs.

The French

Phillippe Rousseau, normally in his own territory of Paris, arrives in Los
Angeles just as Juicy's shipment of diamonds gets jacked.

So which gang would you choose to join?

To join, you need a code name.

If you want to be a part of Juicy's Gang, you need to choose a film director's
last name (preferably American!), and explain why you chose it.
[Already taken: Ford, Huston, Wilder, Peckinpah]

If you want to be a part of The Mexicans, you need to choose a "Mexican"
food or specialty, and explain why you chose it.
[Already taken: Burrito, Churro, Taquito]

If you want to be a part of The French, you need to choose a French (or
European) film director's last name, and explain why you chose it.
[Already taken: Truffaut, Godard, Jeunet]

Best gangster gets a BRAND NEW CAR! Come on, join a gang today!

I'd join Juicy's crew, and I would be Crowe, with whom I share an ambling, naturalistic writing style. We both are able to capture the eccentric appeal of our characters by incorporating much of our own lives into our works.

I'd join The French crew mainly so I could pick Besson. For my appreciation of him making Subway, Le Femme Nikita and Leon. Making me realize that the stuff Hollywood pumps out weren't the only films I had to watch and would enjoy.

Besides, with a guy who has Fred, Nikita, Leon and The Transporter in his corner who would you want in your gang.

I join the Americans, and I choose Brett Ratner, because everyone else is choosing directors that are generally thought of as pretty great directors.

I chose Brett Ratner just to piss those people off.

Sine there is no Italian Mafia (WTF mate), I guess I'll join Juicy's Gang. Code name, how about Spielberg? I was given the nickname by family a while ago, and hell, who wouldn't want to be codenamed after the greatest living director?

Since my birthplace is closer to Mexico than the other two, I choose the Mexican Gang with the codename of Juarez.

I'll be joining up with the French and my codename will be Noé, for Gaspar Noé once managed to almost make me vomit while watching a movie, something that takes quite a lot.

I choose Juicy's gang and pick Speilberg. The dude does whatever story he wants, no matter what the genre. E.T., Catch Me If You Can, The Last Emperor, Jaws, Indiana Jones. That's my kind of director.

Who wouldn't want to be codenamed after the greatest living director?

Most successful living director, without question. But greatest? Really?

I submit Sidney Lumet at just one of the living directors who is a far greater and more interesting filmmaker than Spielberg. All directors have their ups and downs, but I'd take Lumet's five best films (12 Angry Men, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network and The Verdict) over Spielberg's five best (Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan). Hell, I'd take Lumet's 6-10 (The Pawnbroker, Fail-Safe, Murder on the Orient Express, Prince of the City and Deathtrap) over Spielberg's 6-10 (Duel, ET, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Catch Me If You Can and Munich).

I'm not gonna argue that. Lumet is one of the greatest. But unlike most directors that stick to one genre, Speilberg doesn't do that. That's what I love about the man. He just takes the story and makes the movie, no matter what the genre is.

I'd take Marty's best over any of 'em, but you do have a good case. I think it all comes down to personal preference.

Really? The vast majority of Spielberg's films fall into action, drama or science fiction. That's basically all the man can do. He does those very very well, but let's not pretend for a minute Steve-O is a master at everything. He has yet to do a western or a musical or a thriller, just to pick three first level genres.

About the only two first-level genres Lumet hasn't done yet is science fiction and western. But a musical? Lumet's got that. Thrillers? In spades. Comedies? Far more than Spielberg, and in a far wider range of sub-genres (romantic comedy, dark comedy, satire).

One genre? Please. You really need to catch up on your Lumet if you think he only does one genre.

Spielberg's attempts at straight ahead comedy tend to be anemic at best. Spielberg is good at crowd-pleasers, but I prefer filmmakers who actually challenge their audience.

However, I disagree that Spielberg hasn't done a thriller. Jaws and Minority Report both are pretty much thrillers. You could even make the argument that Jurassic Park is a thriller at heart. Spielberg is great at delivering commercial thrills to a mass audience.
