Alex pulled open the large wooded door and stepped into the fourth floor corridor, letting the door slam behind him. He had a break between Potions and Transfiguration and decided to take a walk while most of his friends studied in the library. He was well aware that he was fairly underprepared for the coming exams, but he couldn't spend another minute in that library without compromising some of his sanity. Naturally, he opted for a stroll around the large castle. Chances were he'd find something to occupy the window of time, or he'd run into someone else who was more interesting than a study session.

It was early afternoon and the light was just beginning to hit this side of the castle as the sun shifted in the sky. Parts of the hallway were still fairly dim, but most of the torches had gone out and the corridor was illuminated mostly by sunlight. The bright colors and the lively paintings on the wall were a nice change of scenery from the hours he'd just spent down in the dungeons for Double Potions. I always hated potions to begin with. I've never been good at it. He thought, shuffling his feet along the marble floors. It's just plain mean for them to force me to take a double class just because I'm in the N.E.W.T. level.

He rounded one of the corners and peered into a room on the side. It was abandoned, but he kept walking past it. Finally he leaned in over one of the window ledges, glancing down over the lake below. Several of the students were spread out on the grounds doing homework and playing games, most of them fourth and fifth years. He could just see the greenhouses out of the corner of his eye, there were several students in there helping the Herbology teacher keep up on her plants. Suck-ups... He thought, curling up his nose in disgust.

He'd never really been to down extra credit. He was a hard worker and took all the extra points he could get, but something about people who brown-nosed with their teachers just rubbed him the wrong way. It caused this nausiating feeling in the pit of his stomach.

She traveled the halls, almost listlessly, trying not to appear to down to the people around her. Alice had already gotten enough comments on her red-rimmed eyes due to her tears last night, that she didn't need anymore this morning. A small fake small was plastered on her face, though he step lacked the usual perky bounce that she always had. Inside her head, she was trying to push aside the thoughts that were making her feel upset, but she had just remembered plans that she was supposed to have, but now did not.

Walking around the corner, she was glad that she didn't immediatly see anyone there. Resting her back against the walk, with her arms crossed over her chest, she stared into an abandoned classroom that was across the corridor. It looked almost exactly like the one she had been in just a few days ago, when she was joking around with Frank. Swallowing down the lump in her throat, she pushed herself off the wall and into the room.

I should be in Hogsmeade right now.. She thought sullenly to herself. It may not be Hogsmeade day for many students, but because Frank was the head boy, and she a prefect, they had been able to gather permisson to go. Of course, not that that did any good.. She bit her lower lip, squeezing her eyes shut. Oh, Alice was an emotional girl sometimes, but she didn't pine..or at least she tried not to.

Opening her eyes once more, she heard the footsteps of someone passing by, and looked up just in time to see the flowing end of somebody's robe. Curious, and looking for somewhat of a distraction, Alice moved out of the classroom and back into the hallway to see who the person was. "Hello," She spoked out quietly, just in the case the person wasn't looking for anyoe to intrude on their solitude.

Alex heard a small squeak of a voice coming from somewhere behind him but didn't move in responce, almost choosing to ignore it. Potions always left him in a less than personable mood and he didn't want to chance that the person standing behind him was someone just looking to start trouble. He wasn't sure he'd be able to maintain his composure and not do something he'd regret in an hour or two. He had an unblemished disciplinary record and prefered to keep it that way until he graduated. He was almost finished here and he didn't want to blow it on someone or something stupid.

After a moment or two however, curiosity got the best of him when he didn't hear footsteps or movement in any other directions. Assuming that whomever he'd heard speak was still standing there gawking rudely at him, he spiraled his body around slowly, keeping his gaze low to the floor.

His gaze drew slowly up their body, the petite figure assuring him that it was, in fact, a woman. The red prefect badge made him relax slightly, figuring that a Gryffindor wasn't here to start trouble. He still kept part of his guard up in anticipation that she was here to scold him for loitering out in the hallways. Finally, his eyes made it to her face and he recognized her as Alice Logan, 6th Year Prefect from Gryffindor. They weren't exactly friends, but she had yet to give him a reason to be defensive, so he let down his walls.

He flinched slightly when their gazes locked, taken back by her peculiarly red eyes. They were bloodshot and red around the edges. "Alice, what happened? You look like you've been crying for days!" He approached her slowly, knowing some people didn't like to be pampered and comforted. He slowly placed his right hand on her left shoulder. "Are you okay?"

(I thought red eyes were a little strange...lol)

(Er, whoops. I suppose I didn't quite describe her eyes well..I meant to put red-rimmed, like she'd been crying. I'll go and edit that o.o;;)

When she saw the person turn aruond, she relaxed almost minutely, glad that he wasn't some Slytherin she had ventured upon. Alice didn't know him very well; actually, she doubted if she even remembered his name. She felt incredibly guilty for that, because she always tried to get to know people to some extent. Hoping that the name would come to her, she placed another small smile on her face, hoping he wouldn't think to much of how sad, if at all, she looked.

"Alice, what happened? You look like you've been crying for days!".."Are you okay?"

She flinched a little, knowing that the smile has obviously done nothing to hide what she had been feeling, and shrugged lightly- though not to remove his hand. "I-.." She started, but then cut herself off, not knowing the true answer to such a question. Was she okay? Probably not. Would she live? Well, she'd have to. Was she going to get over it? If she could ever talk to Frank, yes. Alice didn't repeat those questions outloud, though, thinking that they'd just confuse the boy.

"I..guess.." Her answer wasn't that convincing, even to herself. Biting her lower lip once more, she answered truthfully this time, "No. That night wasn't exactly one of the best in my lives.." Talking about her feelings had always been hard sometimes for Alice, or at least to people she didn't know closely. Otherwise, she was extremely open . Licking her dried lips, she tried to think of what to say that wouldn't make her problem seem too dramatic. Dramatics weren't her 'thing', either.

She turned away from him, but didn't move away, almost embarrased that he had caught her looking like this. Alice wondered, though, if he would be someone that pushed the topic or one that just let it dropped. At this point, she had no clue what she needed more.

He dropped his gaze back to the floor when she turned her back on him. There were other gestures of body language that he could deal with, but he hated when people turned their back on him. In his eyes, it was one of the rudest gestures you could make in a conversation, no matter who the person was. Turning your back one someone made it look like you were intentionally trying to shut them out. It was beyond his level of comprehension why people couldn't just ask for what they wanted. If you wanted to be alone, all you had to do was ask. If the person continued to pry, then your reaction would be justified.

He made allowances for this particular situation, realizing she was in an immense amount of pain. He bit his tounge in an attempt to keep from lashing out violently at her, as he was very annoyed. The cloud that hung over her head was already dark, he didn't want to worsen her situation. He wasn't sure if she was turing her back in an attempt to hide her pain better, or to shut him out. Either way, if she didn't want him around, he'd gladly grant her request - no matter what the reason. He wasn't one to pry himself in where he wasn't wanted.

"I take it you'd rather be alone." He said, trying to keep his voice as low and as unagressive as possible. He didn't want to sound like he was spitting fire at her. "So I'll leave you be. I hope you feel better and I'm around if you want to talk to someone."

He took a last look at the back of her head an then turned slowly, reassuming his position at the window. He hated to see people so upset, maybe it was because he came from such a big family that he found it hard to not be compassionate toward a person in pain. But the people in this school tended to lash out quite unexpectedly when approached incorrectly. He didn't know her and he wasn't in the mood to put himself on the line like that.

"I take it you'd rather be alone.".."So I'll leave you be. I hope you feel better and I'm around if you want to talk to someone."

She sighed lightly, almost her sort of vague answers now. Although it had been on of those things where you weren't sure what you wanted, she now did know, and that was to talk to one. Shaking her head, she turned back and opened her mouth to apoligize, but then shut it quickly with a snap. She's been doing that a lot lately; apoligizing, thought before she hadn't exactly known what for. Thinking about it, she wondered if she did have something to apoligize for this time, but in the end just shrugged it off. It wasn't as if he and she were that close, so she doubted he'd react the time.

"I'm sorry," She breathed out quickly, almost as if she thought she'd better get out befor she changed her mind. Alice honestly didn't mean to irritate him-if she had, which she thought she had by the way he had abrutly moved away. "I..don't always know how to respond sometimes when it comes to my feelings." That part was the truth, and she hoped that in this case the truth would make whatever was wrong, better.

Finally turning back around to him, she leaned against the wall, but didn't say anything. She didn't even know what to say, and though it was unwanted, there was tenseness in the air. Sighing audibly, Alice rubbed the back of her neck with her hand, hoping she hadn't messed up yet again.

Alex dropped his head again, letting out a sigh. I wish this woman would just decide if she wants to be social or be left alone. I didn't come up here to play the big brother to someone who's going to be changing moods on me like this.

He decided it was probably in their best interests if he turned around and at least attempted to engage in conversation with her. This way he didn't feel guilty, and he wouldn't have to worry about her becoming more upset and telling some of her Gryffindor friends which might result in an attack by an angry mob. Gryffindor's were known for taking care of their own, and he didn't want to test that with someone like her. She seemed to be very popular among her housemates, as she was always surrounded by people. Besides, he was a Hufflepuff and the ability to forgive was apparently supposed to be in his nature. Who was we to break away from the stereotype?

He drew in a deep breath, filling his lungs to the maximum capacity, and letting it out before he turned to face her. The air was very tense, an extreme uncomfortable feeling loomed in the air between them. You could almost cut the silence with a knife. In fact, if it wasn't for the noise coming from the students outside, you'd swear that they were the only two alive. Finally, having enough of the silence, he sighed an irritable sigh.

"Look sweetie, I figure that you don't want to talk about whatever it is that bothered you enough to make you this upset. And I'm not going to pry because it's none of my business. But I'm not exactly going to stand here and take in the scenery of the corridor. It looks the same as it did yesterday and exactly the same as it will tomorrow." He said, maintaining his cool and composed demeanor as he stuffed his hands into his pockets and crossed his left foot over his right. He leaned back against the window ledge, waiting for her to make the next move.
