So, for those that don't know: The taekwondo school that I teach at (korean martial arts, I'm a black belt) was given 25 days notice to move before our building was torn down. We found a new place that required tons and tons of work. We are talking about knocking down walls. . .adding a ceiling. . .a floor. . .a bathroom. . .yeah. But the price was right, so my Master instructor took it and she and the other instructors, including myself, and a few of the students have been working like dogs for the entire month of May. Some of the things I have done: 1. Painting (lots) 2. Sanding ALL of the new drywall in the building so it could get its top putty and get painted. Yeah. Me. All of it. 3. Putty'd drywall in the bathrooms 4. Knocked down some walls and cleaned up all the drywall from the floor afterwards 5. Used a sledgehammer to knock down a bunch of old shelves and work tables in the back studio, which too a whole night, from about 8 to about 11:30. Though, swinging a sledgehammer over my head with all my might to break a shelf was pretty fun. Until I stepped on a nail and ended up with a bloody sock, a hole in my tennis shoe, and my first tetanus shot ever in the emergency room at midnight on a Friday night, and was out 75 dollars for it. 6. Tried and failed to get paint out of the carpet that a student accidentally knocked over 7. Taken down all of the posters, trophies, flags, our mural, and belts hanging on the walls with my Master instructor; we loaded most of it into my car and unloaded it at the new school 8. Moved mats 9. Moved ceiling tiles from one school to the other (the new one is across the street, so it isn't too far). These come from an acoustic ceiling that we are installing in the new place. I moved ALL of the tiles that were in the large classroom by myself by loading them onto a big dolly in about 5 foot stacks, then running across the street as fast as I could like a maniac shoving this heavy thing in front of me. I made about 4 trips. 10. Lots of cleaning and dusting and moving random things 11. Spending about 2 hours in the upstairs pulling out old air conditioning and heating ducts so we can reuse them in the new place for the air conditioning system. I was covered in gross brown dust. It was like something brown exploded in my face. Oh, and no electricity, and no air conditioning as I was currently tearing it apart. 9_9 12. I helped move extremely large and extremely heavy pieces of the wood floor we are taking out of the old school, loading them into a trailer, then unloading them and laying them down at the new place (the floor in the back studio is not very level in some spots, so this was a must) And a myriad of other things I can't even think of. I have been going to the school in the morning, staying until 1, showering to get to work by 2, then going back to the school and staying until 10pm or later for the marjority of days in the month of May. Last night was moving the wood floor, I didn't get home until 12:45. Then I was right back there at 9am to let the Hawiian dancers in (they shared the other building with us and share the rent) and to get to work. Here is my problem: People are peetering out on us. People that were gung-ho to work at the beginning of the project are slowly not showing up to help anymore. And FEW of the students have ever even showed up in the first place. Granted, I know people have lives beyond Taekwondo, but so do I, yet I spent FOUR HOURS this morning, 9am to 1pm, in the hot, horribly dusty, stuffy upstairs on a ladder pulling down all of the fiberglass insulation so we can lay it in the new place. All alone. And I'm not getting paid. I'm not complaining about the work; I am only ever so slightly ticked that so few of the students (and I am not talking about the kids as much, we have adult and teenage students) have chipped in, and even one of two of the other instructors show up less and less to help. I'm put out about it. I mean, I can't change it, so I am not worrying about it, but I just wanted to gripe somewhere. It has been quite the job. This weekend is out last long haul to get everything out of the old school before it is torn down Monday and we NEED the help, especially to finish moving that wooden floor. Though, our first class was held in the big studio on Thursday and that is very encouraging. Uggggh. I feel fiberglass everywhere, even after a 20 minute shower. *shudder* I had a mask, goggles, long sleeves, gloves, pants, socks, tennis shoes, all on while on a ladder in that super-hot attic pulling the stuff down and I still feel it all over. *faints* I think it is the worst job I've done for the school, though the air conditioning vents yesterday were especially nasty and awkward to move. All in all. . .I can't wait to see that frickin' builing go down Monday, heheh. ![]() |
