I've just returned from France - Brittany/Normandy border. I visited Mont St Michel - where the streets reminded me of Diagon Alley in Harry Potter - and also an American war cemetery. I practised my awful French and ate many moules and frites. Anyone else been anywhere interesting this summer?

I wish! Don't think I'll be going on holiday anytime soon, just can't really afford it right now.

Your holiday sounded interesting though. I've never been there but I have read the Harry Potter novels and seen the films so I feel like I can almost picture it in my mind! :D Is France a regular holiday for you or is it your first time there?

Oh wow, the only holiday I could afford was to Oregon to see my family and friends for a couple weeks (I live in Michigan or Illinois the rest of the year). It has been very relaxing and fun here though, so I can't complain. I would love to travel to France though, it sounds amazing!

Suzanne - if it helps, this was actually my first holiday since my youngest son was 1 - he is now 17! My children had many and various school trips over the years whilst I held fort at home. This time I went away and they looked after the house. My son even redecorated his room whilst I was away :O . As it happens my previous holiday was to almost the same part of France - but my French has deteriorated over the years.
Jess - to English ears Oregon sounds wildly exciting. What is the coutryside like there? Glad to hear you could relax.

It must have meant a lot to you after all that time! :) I can understand though, I've only been out of the country once in my life, also probably around 16 or so years ago... Since then I have had holidays, but not abroad (it's been a few years since that though too).

To be honest, I live in such a beautiful place, I've never really felt much of a need for holidays. There is so much angst and effort involved. I'd rather walk in my local woods. I do a lot of painting and I love all my local views. I could paint the same things over and over again.

That's all for the better then, at least you haven't felt like you've missed out (other than missing the sea sometimes, I mostly can agree with that viewpoint). In fact sometimes holidays can end up being so stressful you need another holiday to get over it! :P

I'm in Saudi Arabia. Not really a holiday, but it is rather interesting. At night, while on the highway driving, if you don't pay attention to the signs it could be a highway in the states.

Downtown area is very different from most places I've been. Some of the souks you can find some really good bargains...and it is so hot. Even at night it doesn't get lower than 105 or so.

Once I get back to the states we are going to Disney World (Land? the one in Florida). It's about a 5 hour drive from where I live...everyone is looking forward to it. I've been to the one in Paris around 3 times and we took the kids to the one in Tokyo around 6 or so times...but I haven't been to this one since I was like 4, so I'm very excited.

105 at night - what is that like? It must be fascinating to visit Saudia Arabia. As regards Disney World, as a huge Harry Potter fan I must admit that I'm tempted by the idea of the new Harry Potter World - if only to see how it has been done. I wonder if I could get some Bertie Bott's every flavour beans there?

I've not been able to take my kids anywhere apart from to their grand parents for a holiday. It's been this way for the last 5 years and the last "holiday" was an attempt to mend a broken relationship and was very very stressed.

But this year we've bought a tent (4 person, a bit snug but will do as it was reduced from £120 to £40 in the sale) and next weekend we're off to Cornwall to camp within 2 miles of the sea.

Just me and my kids, a beach (and a bunch of other tourists, but no older relatives telling my kids to be quiet etc) It's going to be brilliant.
