Well I've been searching around a lot lately, and saw some really good original Utau songs. Soooo I've been wanting to make one for a while now. Now looking website after website, they just give general information about MIDIs and FL Studio etc. Like FL Studio helps you with lyric tuning or something. Then it came down to this, just please explain! All I've seen was mention programs and what general role you can use them for. Can someone please make a tutorial or something of how you can make one and work the program at the same time? This could be posted somewhere else... But I have not seen it yet. |

Uhm... Well I think you need to keep in mind that you won't just be "making an original song for your UTAU", but rather that you'll be composing an original piece together? It's not exactly as easy as saying, ":D I want to make my UTAU an original!" and following steps and WOOHOO ORIGINAL. XD; That's not how it works. You should stop looking at it in such a "for my UTAU" way and rather, just focus on composing music it's self, because that's what you'll be doing. Also keep in mind that a lot of UTAU original producers have prior experience in music? XD Like I myself wrote original songs for a fangame project I've been working on for over a year, so I've got experience from that, and a lot of the other composers have also been meddling for a while, so... Needless to say though, you'll never learn if you don't start experimenting, so I can give you a few tips: 1) Find a music program that's right for you. There are many, MANY different music programs, and they're all fantastic -- it just boils down to what YOU personally like the best. Fruity Loops appears to be a popular choice for many, and if you're good at understanding programs quickly you may like it -- however, from my perspective, Fruity Loops is incredibly difficult to use. I've also heard that the instruments in FL are very fake sounding, and FL is best for techno kinds of music.. I don't have much FL experience though, so I can't say much. Another choice that started gaining popularity recently is Mixcraft, which I myself use -- it's a lot like Garage Band but for a Windows platform? The built in instruments are all very nice and realistic sounding, and the layout is very simple to understand, so this would be my reccomendation. There are also many other programs out there (CakeWalk, Reason, Cubase, etc) so try out the trials of these programs and fight what works best for you. 2) Read up on music theory and tutorials. It's pretty much impossible to just JUMP into music and create something worth listening to without a little studying. There are many parts of music that you may not even realize exist even as you listen to it, and all of these parts are necessary to making a song pleasant to listen to. http://audio.tutsplus.com/category/tutorials/music-theory/ <- This is the website that I give to all people interested in learning about making music, in particular, the Music Theory section. It may seem tedious to read but the information will definitely be enlightening. The articles on this website have helped me a lot too. There are also some tutorials in other articles on how to get certain sounds with certain instruments and effects, so definitely check it out. 3) Practice. Cannot stress this enough. Be a little realistic, alright? You can't expect to create something amazing your first shot. Music, like drawing, sculpting, and everything else -- is an ART, and art takes a little PRACTICE. So, don't get discouraged, and just keep trying your very hardest, and eventually, you'll make something great. Another thing I should stress is that you shouldn't just like, ~wait~ for inspiration to happen. Allow me to post one of my favorite quotes of all time: "The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." -Chuck Close Basically, if you sit around and wait for inspiration to come, you'll never get anywhere. You need to jump right into your field of work, and as you're working, you'll build new ideas. Always practice, and always keep trying. 4) Take advice & critique. If you're serious about wanting to make a good song for your UTAU, you should post previews and samples of areas if you're feeling that something is lacking, or you need help with a certain part. I can't speak for ALL of the other overseas producers, but most of us are very willing to help people out, so never, ever be afraid to ask for a little guidance. XD Furthermore, if somebody tells you that something is off, examine it a little, don't just go "OH WELL IT'S THAT WAY BECAUSE I WANT IT TO BE." That kind of stubborn attitude is what prevents improvement. XD Of course, you should always go with your heart on decisions and if you feel they're wrong, then you can ignore it, but if someone points something out to you, don't just overlook it, you know? That's basically all I can say, I don't really know if it'll be all that helpful to you, but I hope it can be. ;;; As I said, if you have any questions as you progress, most of us are more than willing to help out, so don't be afraid to drop a line! Good luck! |
