Welcome to the UTAforum!

UTAU is a Japanese voice-synthesis program used to create singing vocals for music. It is much like the more popular, commercially sold Vocaloid products, but UTAU is freeware!

I'm sorry to break it to you Kelly, but this community may never see the DJ influence in your UTAU. The reason we all view it as an UTAU cliche is because that's how it looks, no matter where your inspiration derived. That's why people suggested that you add details to make it to make it more distinct.

And you may find it unfair to say that detached sleeves are unoriginal, but they just are here. You're walking into a whole new world full of different standards than the one you resided in before. You can't expect things to go your way, especially when you're asking for opinions.
You said "at least she has a good, well thought out design" but in all honesty, she doesn't. She's boring, and doesn't execute the concept of simplicity well. And that's my opinion. And I may not be the only one who ends up feeling the same way when they see her. If you've decided that her current design stays, then you're just going to have to deal with it.

I'm not trying to be the big baddy here. But I love it when people take their ideas to the next level. Wanna create a character based off of DJ equipment? Hearing that, I expect to see more than just some chick in a black jacket and rainbow shoes. That's like dumbing down your idea, which turns out to be bland and unimpressive. You could go further, if you wanted. If not, then don't sit here and ask for advice and then throw a hissy fit over being misunderstood. It's childish.
Firstly Im not pulling a hissy fit, Im expressing displease. Secondly I never knew that the sleeves were hated that much. Thirdly it shouldn't really matter wether my UTAU has them or not.

I did what you wanted, I added more detail and the stuff from her old designs and I like her. Ive only been doing digital art and design for a few months so I can't make her look amazing like she is in my head. So I'll explain advanced details about her in text instead:

Her entire clothing has imbedded lighting which you cant see in the artwork (its hidden in between the clothing fibers) that she can control and make light up in time to music beats. THATS why there isnt too much detail. If I was to illustrate her with all her lights on + the stuff you were recommending it would be a clusterfuck design.
Thats also why I want to keep the sleeves because it'd be cool to draw/animate her with scrolling text/images moving across those sleeves. Dont you agree?
Also I should mention I will make a illustration of her back view as she has a fair bit of detail there (usb/audio cable imput, lights, metal bits).

Sorry if I got a bit ratty early on. Work dragged today and your comments didn't really help :/
Why dont you help me on the voicebank instead of the design? The design is fine I think, Ive never made a UTAU voice bank before and could appreciate help on that really.

I just wanted people to like my effort for once, everything else Ive done in the past has been ignored (not in UTAU but genrally) and it gets me down constantly. You know? Ive been fine-tuning artwork for this utau for nearly a year now and I thought she was perfect. Something that could be placed next to a vocaloid and even fool people into thinking it was one. I just want her to be loved. ;_;

The tailor of Enbizaka.
she will be loved.
and creating a design is hard.
the idea with the text is great, so just make the sleeves look unique if you really need them.

and ok, i will help with the voice, can you show us some samples?

If you love her the way she is...then she's fine. Don't make an UTAU for other people, Kelly. Make her for YOU. She's YOUR utau. Not ours. She should make YOU happy. And if she does then she's fine. I'm sure I could throw Iris up for critique and she'll probably get nitpicked too. But I wouldn't care...because I love Iris's design the way it is and I love Iris the way she is. Because I made her for me and no one else. Again...our opinions are our opinions and if you don't think she needs to be changed...don't change her. If you're proud of her the way she is it'll show I promise.

Now as for her voice...pick a program. Some people will tell you OREMO is better for quality but uhh...it's not. It's just easier to use because it automatically saves with the push of a button and the sounds are right there for you to read. Audacity...you'll get the same quality. You just gotta click more and export manually. Personally, for Iris I used and am using Audacity because I am more comfortable with it and my mic is kinda going out...and I may need to amplify some of her samples(this is for English...her Japanese is fine).

I can help with oto-ing if you need it but you should record a bit first.

Okay, maybe my straight-forwardness came off too much as a "what I say goes" type of thing. You shouldn't adjust the design to what we want, it should be about what you want. The only reason we gave our honest opinions is because you asked for them. If you want your UTAU to be loved, you will have to make her interesting. However, that doesn't mean you should devalue your own ideas. The thing is, is that it's impossible to appeal to all people. My tastes are different from someone else's and theirs from another. Designs are subjective.

You shouldn't take criticism or suggestions as an attack, nor should you try to adjust things to one's personal preference. What you should do is take all of the ideas given to you and push them into one general statement. Then think about it, and apply that to your UTAU. What I mean by that is, target the words "cliche" and "bland" and rip them from your design completely. No one is saying that you have to make an asymmetrical outfit or add new colours. They are merely suggesting those things as ways to make your outfit more interesting to look at. Mostly what people like to see is a character who's distinguishable and aesthetically appealing. Personally? I really dislike many aspects of Hatsune Miku's design, and she's the original! But I can always tell it's her no matter what, and she doesn't look bad. That's what you should go for. Don't strive to be well-liked, strive to do well.

As for making a good voicebank, you'll want to get criticism on the board indicated for that. There's tons of resources here to get you started.

And remember, just because someone doesn't like what you make, doesn't always mean that you did poorly. You're going to have to start accepting the fact that you can't please everyone.

Also, just so you know, I don't find designing to be a walk in the park. Even as a harsh critic, I take forever to come up with good concept art now-a-days. So just be patient, and the work will show for itself.

Im using Garageband on a mac. That way I can make her vb compatible with UTAU and garageband/reason4. I was just wondering how I make her vb sound good when I put it into utau. I want to make the best VB I possibly can!

Oto-ing I might need help is, what is a oto?

An oto is basically the essence of your UTAUs voice. It's what helps tell the program when each sound should begin, end, how much of the sound should play, which part of the sound should have vibrato when it's applied, and which parts should remain unchanged.

Without it...you're UTAU will sound crappy. I can tell you how I oto'd Iris if you want. There are also tons of tutorials on youtube/this forum. HOWEVER...for best results I suggest you take the information you get from them and mess around with Kelly's sounds yourself. Every UTAU is different. And the way I oto Iris might make her smooth and clear...but it could also destroy someone elses UTAU when applied to them.

To edit your oto, Open up UTAU. Got to Tools and then Voicebank Settings(from an english translated UTAU program point of view).

EDIT: I also suggest you make a new thread for voicebank critiquing/help XD

Ambiguous originality aside, one thing that's really bugging me is that her breasts look to be growing out of her collarbone. Not to mention they're way too perky for that size. I took the liberty of doing an, albeit not very good thanks to my crap PC mouse, redline for you. I also fixed up that whole "hey my fingers are the same length" thing going on down there.

Sadly I cant fix those issues, I (stupidly) merged the PSD layers together. It doesnt really matter that much anyway as she's a robot. Robot = no bones! xD Like I mentioned, I'm only getting the hang of drawing humans so boobs to me are just two sticking out circles.

That's not really a valid excuse. One, yes she's a robot, but one made to resemble a human, so anatomy still applies here; And two, blatant mistakes like that look very unprofessional.
