UTAU Personality = Design?; Should an UTAU design match the personality?

Aahh... I couldn't think of a good title for this topic-thread that I had planned. If there is already a thread like this, admnistrators, please don't hestitate to ban this or take it down.

Well, I've been finalizing designs for my UTAU-to-be, and I was contemplating as to whether or not change their design to match their personalities. I'm not the best with designs, I know, and a lot of the time they end up looking strikingly similar to already-existing anime characters, but that's besides the point. Sorry for getting slightly-off topic. I was just curiois...

Should an UTAU's personality/persona match the outcome of their outfit? For instance, I've planned an UTAU that is horribly shy, and has a hard time being around people. I would imagine that if she is shy and uncomfortable that she would be modest and not have any particularly revealing clothes, or have shorter dresses and things of that sort... But would that always be the case? ;;

Or, for another example, if a character is a very energetic, sweet, or enthusiastic that they'd have a more bright, colourful-appealing attire?

What do you all think? Should UTAU personalities [if chosen to give one] have an outfit that matches that, or...? Iunno, I'm just confused. ;;

Sometimes you can meet some damn boring people that have interesting outward appearences because they're trying to make up for not having a personality by looking like the have one.
I've met my fair share of folks like that.
Also, I've known plenty of the opposite. People that outwardly look not much different from anyone else until they start trying to burn moths or tell you about their extensive synthesiser collection.

Just go with the design that fits the voice more. If it doesn't work, you'll have a backup one to use instead for act 2!

Before you do that, though, it's a good idea to field test. Show people the designs in a video or alongside a link to an example of the voicebanks so they can give their honest opinions about which one they'd rather go for.

I don't /necessarily/ think that the personality of a character should determine their dress, though it is one of the more defining factors for wardrobe.

If she's shy, she doesn't have to wear super conservative things. She can be fun and cute as the next bubbly person. It's just how she holds herself.

Go with what you like, and the character's tastes I say. Think from her perspective, things she likes and whatnot.

I find when making a character...a lot of the times it's hard to tell their personality with just what they say/do or in the case of UTAU, with how they sound and it's much easier to convey their personality through how they dress.

I personally don't have a very outgoing excited voice in my opinion. And I'm not very up in your face friendly either. I mean...I was talking all cutesy to my cat one day in this high pitched voice that is only possible when I try really hard and my sister was like, "Aww...you actually sound like a girl" true story =_=
However I wanted an UTAU with that up in your face friendly personality, and I wanted to show she was confident in herself and a naturally happy person 95% of the time. But I only have ONE voice and that's my speaking voice ._. That cutesy voice I make to my cat is ridiculously annoying XD So what was I to do? Give up on my idea and make Iris just like me...yeah no.

So I had to give her bright, colorful, slightly revealing, clothes to show her personality for me XD And it's worked so far...actually I think Iris's brightness has rubbed off on me *w* Either that or I'm just really comfortable talking to you guys(let's go with that one shall we?)

Where am I going with this....? Ummm...okay. So basically,

tl;dr If you don't think you can portray your UTAUs personality successfully through their voice, then you might want to consider having the clothes do the talking for you. If voice shows personality perfectly, then you don't have to be so picky with clothes.

Just my opinion~

Well that depends.

Do you plan on using your UTAU in roleplaying situations or not?

Like, people need to realize that there are two very separate parts to this fandom--

the actual USAGE of the UTAU, voicebanks and program--

and then the CHARACTER portion that focuses on the design, personality and BEING of the character behind the voice.

Sometimes, these two areas merge and become one-- where through character developments and friendships and stories made between them, song duets and even originals are formed.

However, not all people partake in both. Some people chose to remain outside of the characterization section of UTAU and focus ONLY on the voices (and on the flipside, some people only focus on the characterization and don't play with the program a lot)

How you design your character and personality should really, really rely on what you're going to go for in this fandom.

If you want your character to be developed AS A CHARACTER and you want to partake in the roleplaying section, you should probably design your character accordingly to it's personality. If you want your character to have interactions w/ others and partake in the fanfiction/roleplaying/non-musical side of UTAU, you need to put a LOT of work and thought into the design and personality you give the character. After all, WHAT logical sense would it make for a supposedly shy character to parade around in a mini skirt and tube top, you know? That's just bad character development and nobody will want to roleplay with that kind of character, you know? XD If you want to be involved in the characterization part of the fandom, I would say yes.

On the flip side, if you have little to no interest in the roleplaying side of the fandom and only want to work with the VOICE-- I don't think it matters. Design the character to fit the voice or however you think it will represent it best. If you're only going to work with the voices and not the characterization, my answer is no.

A lot of the people who aren't part of the characterization part of UTAU tend to be a little resentful towards it-- everyone I've met who doesn't want to take part in the characterization of UTAU always seem to be very negative and degrading to people who do. However, whether you like it or not, whether you want to participate or not, doesn't change that it's a large, separate part of the fandom, you know? XD So you need to make choices based on what exactly you're aiming for.

@Falliat - Nn, perhaps it's just modern-day-paranoia about the UTAU fandom? I was thinking that if I did create an outfit for said character, or any general character from a user should in fact do a sort of test to get opinions, and have ACT2 or future banks be the better attire.

@Myon - I think I do that too much when it comes to my characters; I mentally get in their state and try to create things that would apply to them, but rarely do I just ignore that. It's just hard to try and satisfy people in the UTAU world. I wanted to create something on her outfit that wouldn't be declared as too unoriginal, or downright just outlandish. ;;

Nonetheless I think that when it comes right down to it, both sides kinda balance one another out...? Iunno, I'm confusing what I'm saying. OTL;;

@IrisFlower - I think most people create cutesy voices when they talk to their pets/animals. I do it, my family does it; everyone does. But don't worry, I wouldn't mind if I heard an UTAU voice like that. It'd just be really high-pitched and cute... ; w ;

But I like Iris's voice, and her voice and outfit really do match her personality altogether, so it's not bad at all. I was just just a bit confused onto whether or not people look more to one side, like just characterization or voice and not acknowledging the other. ; u ;

@scarfu - You've really helped me in this case. I lean moreso role play with characters I create, and with UTAU I plan to role play more. Of course, I willwork on character voices, but moreso the characterization itself, as you put it.

E-Err, I was just curious as to see who does what, and which would be more favoured. But it didn't occur to me that users moreso did one or the other. Rather careless on my part, actually, sorry. ;;

A-And yes, I loved the shy-factor in your statement. That's what I was putting forward as an example; if I have a character that is moreso timid I don't want her to look like she's sexually promiscuous or loves really tight clothes or anything... But I am sorry to hear that about users or people going against one another in terms of voice vs. characterization. ; w ;

I think you gave me good advice to base from. I really appreciate it. ; u ;

I'd say that the personality of an UTAU shouldn't be a big deal unless you're planning to roleplay him/her a lot or create original songs. To be honest I don't really focus on the personality aspect of my UTAU and came up with it in like five minutes. Of course I think an UTAU's personality can be flexible if it's within reason. It would be odd to see a small, cute fluffy UTAU with a personality that says "I will kill you in your sleep and kick puppies," or a dark, gothic looking one that likes sunshine and rainbows.

I guess personally I agree with Scarfu.

I do know that Reni has a relatively ambiguous design =w= I dig my hands into both sides of the fandom.. i don't roleplay, I write fanfiction (which is how I developed her personality), but my focus has always been more on the musical stuff. i guess you can look at Reni's design as both character-based and cliche-based voice-based. I don't think it's impossible to create such a design, in other words :D

It's always a good idea to have a backup anyway. There are a lot of utauloids out there. It'd suck to have worked hard on a design only to later on find a character that looks a lot like yours and existed before it. It's also encouraged in concept art to come up with multiple ideas and pick the most fitting parts from each one. You SHOULD have multiple designs to pick and choose from anyway.

And having a "normal" looking character doesn't mean you can't make them distictive so you're not really limiting yourself by sticking to less vibrant clothing and hair.
