(Apologizing now if this is the wrong sub-forum) Could I have an opinion or two about the reverb on THIS? I uploaded it just before soundcloud went down, so it's clipped to shit. Here's a downloadable version that I've been mixing and editing over and over since then. I know some people (like me orz) don't like downloading files to listen to things they'll just delete, but I promise the downloadable version is MUCH BETTER. I used reverb on the first part, just before the music stops and then peaks, and then again when it calmed down. I think it actually sounds good, but I've learned not to trust myself after discovering I go tone-deaf after so many hours awake. I'm editing the vocals a bit more for the last time (I've done it 38 times in all! Hooray OCD! orz), and mixing it just once more. I want to know if I should keep the reverb, or kill it dead. It's sounds pretty plain without it, though >< |

gotta use multiband compression and then reverb to make it stand out and have that depth that reverb gives. on your mix the wet really interferes with the dry and it sounds muddy. try bussing the dry signal to a separate track so you will basically have two vocal tracks; one for the dry signal, and one for reverb. now you have a lot more control over how you mix your reverb settings. but yeah, to make the vocals stand out and have some depth you need to apply multiband compression on whatever frequences sound best on your utauloid, and on the reverb bus set it to 100% wet and tweak with that. i like box.net 'cause you don't have to download to listen...plus 42mb for a .wav might be a bit much for people with bandwidth caps. |

Okay, my computer is kind of dying, but here's my opinion on Reverb as a whole: (because downloading is not really an option right now w) Reverb is a crutch n00b mixers use to try and make their works sound good. Yes, reverb can hide mechanical aspects of a voice, but it kind of wreaks havoc on your mixing. (A lot of the reverb you hear in popular songs is actually just delay, mind you) The whole point of mixing is to seamlessly fit the voice into the backing. When you add something that makes it lay on top of the track, you're just going against all that. My advice is to not play with effects until you have a very, very good understanding of how to mix seamlessly. Then you can more easily compensate for those effects. Here's a good tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flR94ZCRFkw The only thing that does really different from me is that I add "ReaEq" to everything. (Usually full vocals) And as I said- if you really think you need reverb, you may just need delay. |

Okay~! I just finished my final mix of it, I'll post it up once I have the video done. I actually used the Soaa mixing tutorial on every mix I've done so far (with a bit higher ratio to keep consonates from dying), but it wasn't my mixing that was the problem. Miss Blythe, you were right, I just needed delay, not reverb. Thank you!~ Edited by Savy, Oct 9 2011, 08:42 AM.
