Welcome to the UTAforum!

UTAU is a Japanese voice-synthesis program used to create singing vocals for music. It is much like the more popular, commercially sold Vocaloid products, but UTAU is freeware!

Do you consider using MMV to make USTs cheating?

With Mikumikuvoice, all you need is a wave file to fill in the lyrics and make vsqs. Then you can open it in UTAU and save it as a UST. I personally like this, since 1) I can focus on isolating the lyrics and fix the pitch later and 2) instead of adding "r" notes at every pause, you can get all the lyrics, then fill the spaces in as "r". I've heard some users say that it's cheating, and that people are too lazy to make a ust straight in UTAU.But what do you think?

Well, not everybody has the absolute pitch so I don't see the problem of doing an UST in this way =/

Personally, on the one I'm working on for two weeks and a half, I'm using as model the acapella I've recorded for a contest (with notes shown in Demo Melodyne) and the only music sheet I could find on the Internet (notice that was just the short version but I'm lucky the song keeps the same melody)

After, for the rest (like tempo), I do it with intuition and auditive recalling

Anyway that's my first UST and I tried to do some so much in the past with only remembering and ended it so terrible that I prefer to be on a base like that. And I don't care about what people think because I'm pretty sure some of them already did an UST in this way or secretely planned to do it as well.

I think my major problem is because I'm not really habited IRL to C, D, E-etc notes... I only know them as do ré mi fa sol la si and upper do. I can't help it if sometimes I've still this issue to recall which one is the letter equivalent >_<"' I guess that's why I never could do an UST straightly and place the notes correctly

That's more frustrating because you recall the tune/key in your head meanwhile you're hearing the note is wrong and trying in every possible ways to recreate that note as in your mind orz

-hasn't used MMV...yet-

But reading what you say...I don't understand how it's "cheating"...I mean it's not like you're stealing someone elses UST and passing it off as your own is it? Isn't it better to use MMV than to steal or am I being naive here?

And not everyone...I mean some people aren't good at making USTs by ear or something. So...ahhh whatever. I just don't see how it's cheating.

I don't think it's cheating, but they almost always turn out terribly when put in UTAU. (Or maybe that's just me trying to use VoiceCapture.)

Actually, MMV is actually slightly HARDER than, persay, using MIDIs and referencing pitchblends from songs.
Although it IS easier than doing it all by ear, let me tell you why it's still tricky.

OMG SPOILER REVIEW.

So yeah, it's still pretty tricky; most people recommend using REAPER to make a MIDI for the vocals and using ReaPitch on an acapella for referencing purposes, but I still prefer finding a MIDI and doing the work myself using that MIDI. Much easier.

Oh, I forgot: um, not technically cheating; using MIDIs would technically be more under the lines of "cheating" than using MMV.

-Has never heard of MMV until now-

Nah, I don't think it's cheating. It's not like UST making is a competition. Some people do it one way and the others do it another way. There's no stealing involved, so it's okay.

Although I prefer to do it by ear so I practice recognizing different pitches.

... I think any way of writing a UST, whether from scratch, with MMV, using a MIDI, or even using a VSQ, is perfectly fine.

Although VSQs may have to be credited?
I will push my ships on you, always.

...It isn't cheating, imo. Making USTs directly in UTAU is hard for someone with no musical background since you have to wait for the resampler to render to hear the note you've just put in. Also, timing is hard too. I usually make MIDIs in FL studio and then import them into UTAU xD

Or ar you referring to the fact that you can steal the notes from MMV? Well it usually screws up if it isn't a clean acapella.

Uhm lmao why would that be cheating?

A good portion of the people who I know make usts do it by making midis first, not directly in the UTAU program it's self-- myself included.

To me it seems really counterproductive to try and make a ust directly in the UTAU program because:

1) You can't tell if anything is really off until you render the file and play it against the music.
2) You can't hear the notes right away-- you have to play render them to hear if they're right, and not everybody can just read the piano roll well enough to automatically know what note they're looking for.
3) It's harder to tell if the BPM is off until, again, you render it and compare it to the bgm.

Personally the best method (in my opinion) to make usts is in a program where you can transcribe midis. Some people use FL studio but I personally use Mixcraft-- I think REAPER can make midis too? You just put the vocal version of the song inside of your mixer then make a new midi track, then draw the notes in accordance with the singing.

I remember when I first came into the fandom I tried using MMV to make usts and... XD; trust me it's a lot harder than it needs to be.
