Judi muttered under her breath, increasing the size of the fireball before throwing it and incinerating the goblin. Yuen stopped charging forward and pulled one of the cards he had been showing Danzai earlier. It glowed for a moment before disappearing. Alice appeared in front of Yuen.
"Do you wish something, master?" She asked politely.
"Get rid of the goblins, would you? There weaklings so don't bother using more than your cards." Alice nodded and turned to face the goblins. Danzai held his arm out, holding Judi back.
"It's perfectly possible that this will be our only chance to see a Seireiten's guardian in action, so let's leave it to her." Judi was also interested in Yuen's magic so she stopped to watch. Alice swung her right arm out to her side and four normal playing cards appeared between her fingers. She did the same with her left. Yuen looked on confidently.
"Get rid of them, Alice." Alice charged forward, cards held between her fingers. She rushed through a small group of four goblins. They were all torn to shreds within seconds. A lone goblin came running up to Alice from behind, brandishing his small spear. Alice spun on her heel and kicked his face in before he got anywhere near her. Hearing the scream of that goblin caused all the goblins in the field to flee to the forest where they had come from. Yuen flipped his hair, proudly. Alice's cards disappeared and she folded her hands in front of her chest as she walked up to Yuen. He smiled and patted her head.
"Guardians really are amazing." Danzai commented as he approached Yuen. "Now we just have to collect the fangs and we can head back." Yuen's eyes widened sheepishly, while Alice hid her face in her hands, embarrassed. "What's wrong."
"Were you not watching? Alice completely shredded those goblins, there's nothing left of them. On that note Judi burned hers to ash."
"Ha, I guess I'm the only smart one in this group."
"Really?" Judi asked approaching them. "If you were smart then you wouldn't have struck hard enough to crush every fang in your goblins mouth."
"I did?" Judi nodded. "Great, well then I guess we're heading into the forest."
"Then let's split up." Yuen suggested, "We can go in teams of two." Yuen reached into his pocket producing his remaining guardian cards and summoned Witch and Miko. "Who wants go with who?"

Judi almost immediately spoke "I'll go with Alice here. I need someone in front of me to cast my better spells, and it will be an amazing opportunity to learn about Guardians."
Danzai shrugged. "I'll go with Witch then. Not like it matters all that much. Not like gobbos are much of an issue."
"That leaves me with Miko then, "Yuen said, "Alright lets meet back here in an hour."
Danzai and Judi nodded, and the group split up.

"Where the heck are they anyways..." Judi sighed, her hand running over her books. "You'd think we'd have found at least one by now." Frustrated, she raised her voice. "Come on out dammit!"
As if by command, goblins started pouring out in great number. Judi looked on in shock for only a second, before regaining her wits. Alice dashed forwards, and Judi began casting her first spell.
"Rhast ein har thol khest, ~khardiem~"
A ball of fire considerably larger than her previous ones flew forward and vaporized a dozen of the goblins. 3 dozen more took their place. Judi flung a smaller fireball into the face of a charging goblin while bringing out her tome, flipping it open. The words on the pages glowed sharply red, and a small wall of fire blocked the charge in front of her. She didn't have time to react to the goblins behind. Just before a blow was stuck, the goblins vanished in a flash, Alice with cards in hand at the ready. Judy called back towards her.
"Can you buy me some time?"
Alice simply replied, "Yes."

Danzai tried to hide it, but he couldn't help but worriedly glance behind him at Witch every twenty seconds. Yuen had warned him, but she was just so... Unnerving. And she hadn't done anything yet.
A loud sound like an explosion reverberated through the woods. Danzai turned towards it, gritting his teeth. "That... Sounded like a first level spell. Why would Judi need a spoken spell against goblins? I have a bad feeling about this... Lets head her way."
Progress didn't last long, as a wall of armed goblins started flooding towards them. Danzai swung his hammer into the ground, and chains rose up and snared the front lines. "Why are there this many? How the hell did they gather this close to town? I'm lacking in evidence, but regardless I'll deliver the sentence! Guilty!" Danzai crashed into the wall of monster hammer first, and started going wild.

Yuen and Miko walked through the forest, keeping a careful eye out for goblins. Miko's head snapped around and she looked back over Yuen's shoulder. Yuen also turned and looked back.
"Felt that to?" He asked, "That was quite the spell, I didn't give Witch a lot of energy so if she had released a spell that strong I'd feel her energy staggering, that just leaves Judi, Let's move." Their path was cut off almost immediately as they were surrounded by a swarm of goblins. Yuen sighed. "Figures, take care of them Miko." He ordered as he sat down. Miko produced eight small slips of paper from her robe and threw them out creating a ring of Shikigami warriors around Yuen and herself. She then sat on her knees and produced a Japanese cup of tea from out of nowhere. She handed it to Yuen before producing one for herself. Yuen looked down into his cup, a tea stalk was standing up in the glass. "Ochabashira." He said to himself as he started to drink.

Danzai had been going crazy in the seemingly endless army of goblins, but even his stamina was reaching it's limits. He jumped back to distance himself from the goblins and to take a moment to catch his breath. The goblins would not give him that moment, however, as they all rushed him the moment he touched the ground. Just as they were about to strike him an enormous gust of wind lifted them all off their feet and threw them back, impaling a number of them on each other's weapons. Witch floated down, sitting with both legs on one side of her broom, and lifted her hand. Dark spires rose from the ground beneath the goblins easily wiping out sixty to seventy percent of what remained. She jumped off the broom and walked behind Danzai.
"Your turn," She said as if she was his master, "Do it well or I may have to punish you later." Danzai was immediately on his feet, somewhat scared to think about what she might do. He was ready to fight again and finish the goblins but an enormous number of goblins came running. The goblin's number grew until there were so many that you couldn't see them all anymore. "That's unfortunate, get on." Danzai turned to see Witch getting ready to take off on her broom. He got on the broom and held Witch's shoulders as they took off. "Grope anything and I'll have to give you serious punishment tonight, although if you mess up enough, I'm sure you'll come to enjoy it." Witch said in a voice that was half scary and half seductive. Danzai slid back on the broom and gripped the broom's shaft, finally beginning to understand why Yuen had warned him.

A shikigami came flying towards Yuen, knocking his tea into his face. He opened his eyes slowly and angrily. A short distance in front of him stood a giant goblin, easily five or six times bigger than the others. It held an enormous and strangely well maintained mace and glared at Yuen angrily.
"What is that?"
"A Goblin king, the tend to grow quite large." Miko answered.
"Ochabashira my ass, Get us out of here." Miko produced another slip of paper which she used to summon a large, bird-form shikigami big enough to carry both Yuen and Miko. The bird took off after Yuen and Miko had gotten on it's back. Miko smiled as the bird carefully flew through the branches in the forest.
"You look happy."
"I'm pleased that you taking thing's seriously for once..." Miko's statement trailed off as she felt Yuen groping her butt. She punched him, hard, forcing him to grab his nose to stop the bleeding.
"Don't blame me, you know not to say stuff like that in front of me it just makes me want to misbehave."
"Just look for the others."
"Not just anyone, We need Alice for this."

Alice was a blur of motion, keeping a wide circle around the intoning Judi clear of goblins.
"Zwei cent oir sect omn ost rhar solis."
Judi spoke each word slowly and clearly, the absolute focus showing on her face demonstrating the difficulty of the spell she was about to cast.
"Zwei khag oir sect omn hast bin rep tho khor."
Alice's strength was flagging, even she could not face these numbers so easily.
"Cread owen oir thour natsun als spen thaid,"
Hearing the spell come to its climax, Alice retreated back to Judi's side. Judi drew a deep breath and finished her spell.
"~kharak strai~!"
The ground shook and the goblins halted, uncertain as to what was happening. The ground tore itself to pieces as the blazing blood of the earth burst forth, incinerating every single goblin in the area. The fury of the flames lasted only a brief moment, but that was a moment of staggering violence incomparable to the flames Judi had wielded before. The difference showed, and Judi passed out soon after, the flames vanishing along with their mana supply. Alice took Judi in her arms, and left the forest.

Danzai blanched. "Dear spirits..."
The cause of his distress was obvious. Though it did not last long, the glow from Judi's spell was impossible to miss. But Danzai was more concerned by its abrupt departure. "She shouldn't have casted a third level spell, that's insane! She's not anywhere near strong enough to use that... But if she did use it she's probably safe for now... All we can do for now is return to the meeting place."
Witch turned her head back towards Danzai. "Don't presume to give me orders."
Danzai had to focus hard to avoid responding with 'yes mistress'. He had no idea why.

Danzai and witch returned to the meeting place to find Judi lying on the ground. Next to her was a card with an illustration of Alice, however, unlike before, her arms and legs were chained and she looked injured. Danzai picked up the card.
"What happened to her?" Danzai asked.
"She used to much power and will be chained within the card until she recovers." Witch answered uninterested.
"So that's how it works, huh?" Danzai tucked Alice into his pocket and went to check on Judi. "Hm, she really did use a level three, what on earth could possibly warrant that? What's even more amazing than her casting the spell is the fact that the forest hasn't become an inferno."
"It was Alice's doing." Danzai looked up to see a large bird landing next to him. Yuen and Miko dismounted. "Miko tend to Judi." miko bowed and went to obey orders. "As soon as the enemies were defeated, Alice froze time. I didn't give her to large an amount of energy when I smmoned her so a level three runic spell had enough resistance to not be fully frozen in time, however she did freeze the oxygen flow. Essentially she suffocated the fire before it got out of hand, that's why she's back in her card." Danzai pulled Alice out of his pocket and handed it to Yuen who returned it to his ankle holder. "I really wish she hadn't though, this place is more than a goblin nest, I'm almost certain it's a goblin breeding ground, or Miko is at least. There are even goblin kings around here, we need to destroy the forest in it's entirety, but we can't let the goblins escape. Danzai do you have anyway to close off the forest exits? if so then I can use a card and start a fire. And if you're low on energy then Witch has the ability to act as a catalyst."

Danzai looked at his hammer for a bit before replying. "I... Might be able to do it. It'll use up way more mana than I have though, I'm not a caster. But I suppose if I wasn't the one supplying the mana I could pull it off. You'll be dealing with another unconscious person though I'm not gonna be able to do it and remain awake."
Yuen nodded. "I can deal with that. Burning down this forest is a top priority."
Danzai hefted his hammer up and glanced at Witch. "So be it." He crashed his hammer into the ground, and rose up on a judicial bench made of pure steel. He concentrated and a large amount of mana began flowing from Witch to Danzai's bench and hammer. Danzai rose his hammer and hit the bench as though it were a gavel. "Judgement, guilty! Verdit, immolation! Your sentence is to be carried out immediately!" He crashed his hammer onto the bench once more. This time the sound reverberated through the air, and soon every possible exit to the woods was closed off with metal bars, sealing the goblins inside. Not missing a beat, Yuen drew one of the cards from the carrier on his shoulder, and cast forth the flames contained within. Soon the entire forest was a swirling dance of flames, scorching the goblins within despite their desperate attempts to escape. It took a surprisingly short amount of time for the entire woods to be reduced to embers and ashes. Danzai crashed to the ground as the bench and bars vanished, and Witch retreated into her card.
Not one goblin survived.

"Miko! Make sure they're not dead!" Yuen ordered as he picked up Witch's chained card. "I'm almost certain that we're gonna get in big trouble for this, and we didn't even get any fangs from it either." Yuen sighed.
"They're all fine, unconscious but fine."
"Thanks, you have a shinigami big enough to get us all back to the guild, don't you?" Miko nodded and produced the small paper that grew into a dragon-like being. It took off after Judi and Danzai had been loaded on.

Judi awoke in an infirmary. The nurse greeted her as she sat up.
"Where am I." She asked.
"The guilds infirmary, that young man brought you here hours ago. The older man that was with you has already awoken. The guildmaster asked to see you all in his office, which is the door at the end of the hall to your left when you leave."
"Oh, I see. Thank you." Judi left the infirmary and headed down the hall. She heard yuen screaming on the other side of the door as she pushed it open. Yuen was tanding in front of the guildmaster's desk and Danzai was back against the wall watching.
"Are you insane!" Yuen yelled at the guildmaster who was sitting calmly at his desk. "If I had followed your procedures then those goblins would have over-run a huge amount of innocent people! They were ready to strike at everything around them, I promise you that!"
The guildmaster stood, slowly and looked at Yuen, at least they thought he was as they couldn't see either of his eyes. "You did not have authority to make the decision of burning down that forest. On top of that, I heard that even when you went to such extreme measures you couldn't even complete the test level quests that the guild created."
Yuen slammed his hands on the desk. "Shut it, that's just because we had to incinerate all of them! We had no choice dammit! Besides, I'll bet I'm stronger and smarter then a lot of the people who do have the authority to make that decision."
"Is that so? Fine then, I propose a test, a new test. You will be given an A rank mission. All you have to do is complete it and I'll drop all the charges the guild is putting against you and instate you as an officer. Of course you're free to return and admit defeat at any time, at which point you shall give up all your cards and work here as my assistant. Do you agree?"
"Of course, I won't lose here."
"Oh yes and there are conditions. You must leave both of your guardians here." Yuen clenched his teeth, he had no choice but to accept the conditions now. Luckily it seems that the guildmaster didn't know that he was a rulebreaker as he only asked for two guardians. Yuen knelt down and pulled Alice and Witch from his case. Both were chained and would remain that way for a while, Miko was all he had. He placed the two cards face down on the guildmasters desk because if he saw that they were female he may realize that Yuen has a guardian left. The guildmaster picked up and looked at the cards, "Cute." He said mockingly. Yuen mentally cheered for the guildmasters ignorance. "Oh yes, your friends are also part of this little wager, the stakes are the same for them. You may take one of them with you on your quest the other stays with me."
"Dammit." Yuen muttered under his breath. "Sorry for getting you guys involved in this, Either of you wanna come along?"

Danzai shook his head. "There's something I need to think about for now. I'll be back in here in a bit, I just need to straighten my head."
Danzai turned and walked out the door, deep in thought. Judi looked at his retreating back, then back at Yuen. "I'm interested in this. The assignment only required us to reach E rank, but... Anyways, I feel responsible for this, it was my idea to hunt in that area."
The guildmaster looked at Judi for just long enough to make Judi uncomfortable, then spoke. "Very well. The mission you are about to undertake is an rescue mission."
Judi and Yuen leaned in, and the guildmaster started his explanation.

"So, the balance between what's right and what the rules say, huh? I suppose that just means the rules were incorrect, but..."
Danzai sighed, his recent actions weighing heavily on his mind. This was too close to the possibility of grey for his tastes. He was shaken from his reverie by the entrance of two people he was quite familiar with.
"Lady Reizvol, with this we are officially going to reach E rank. Shall we return to the Acadamy early?"
A woman in a black dress trimmed with gold walked into the room, her escort behind her. She spoke to him without looking back.
"It would be best for now to further proceed through the ranks. D rank is hardly a difficult rank for me to reach."
They didn't seem to notice Danzai yet. Of course it was usually Judi they were concerned with. Danzai stepped up and smiled.
"Hello Eliza. How have you been?"
The man seemed rather taken aback by the use of the woman's first name, but he recognized Danzai and held his tongue. Eliza turned to Danzai, uninterested.
"Ah, the magus' companion. I suppose you are still trying to finish the assignment?"
Danzai couldn't help but widen his grin. He found the rivalry between the two casters highly amusing. And he was in a very good position to mess with her...
"Not anymore. In fact, Judi is in the guildmaster's room right now getting briefed for her next mission."
Eliza frowned. "Why on earth would she be getting a mission from the guildmaster?"
Danzai laughed. "Because it's an A rank of course."
Eliza paled and her cheeks went red. Danzai laughed once more at her obvious distress. Eliza brought up her hand and pointed at Danzai, who's smile faded. Eliza spoke one word. "Ehrlichkeit"
A circle of light appeared around Eliza's hand, matching the one appearing around Danzai's forehead. The man behind Eliza looked on in an odd mixture of distress and total calm. Eliza however, was not calm. "Now, were you honest about what you have said."
Danzai answered, with no other choice. "What I said was the truth. Now release your spell."
Eliza's hand dropped, the glow fading. She and Danzai glared at eachother, then Eliza turned and walked back out the door.
"Come Tobias. We will return to the Academy. There is nothing to be gained in this place."
Tobias made a slight bow, "Yes my lady," and followed her out the door. Danzai sank into the chair behind him. "She's just too damned entitled. Tch."

The guildmaster placed a sheet of paper on the desk in front of Judi and Yuen.
"The young daghter of a noble family is being held hostage by one of the branch families of that same family. They have made several demands which include the head family stepping down and giving up their position and any rights to the families powers. Your job is to infiltrate the branch family mansion, retrieve the girl and return her safely to her family."
"Can you give us any more information." Judi asked. "A description of the girl? Her age? Location?"
"I was getting to that." The guildmaster responded seeming annoyed. "The girl is only eight years of age and her powers awoke only recently. She is under four feet in height, with brown hair and multi colored eyes."
"Multi-colored eyes?" Judi asked confused.
"Her right eye is green, her left is gold." Yuen finally spoke up.
"By any chance, are we looking for a girl named Emerie?" The guildmaster nodded.
"It seems you know her, that's convenient."
"Who is this girl?" Judi asked Yuen.
"Emerie is a sweet little kid who is currently the only surviving child of the current generation of the Seireiten head family."
"She's from your family."
"I supposed technically, but the truth is I'm actually a member of a very distant branch family. That's why I'm such an oddity, my powers are notably higher than possible." Yuen turned back to the guildmaster. "I promise you that I'll complete this mission, but not for this stupid guild. Emerie doesn't deserve to get kidnapped like that, she's a good kid and I'll be sure that she gets back, even if it mean helping the family that threw me out."
"Then go, and let your words be your bond." The guildmaster responded, impressed with Yuen's conviction.
"Let's go Judi." Yuen threw the door open and charged out the door. Judi followed close behind.

"You know, I'm almost glad my familly isn't important enough to warant this sort of drama." Judi flipped through her tome, making sure she was ready. Yuen cast her a sidelong glance.
"Yeah, it's annoying. Honestly, I'd be tempted to bail on this whole thing if it wasn't Emerie who was in trouble."
Judi snapped her book shut. "Well, at least we're doing something worthwhile here. Honestly though, who resorts to kidnapping for this sort of thing..."
Moving on, the two found themselves in the lobby. Danzai was waiting for them. "So what's the scoop?"
"Rescue mission" Yuen answered. "Trouble with my family"
Danzai put his arms behind his head. "You don't say? Well, good luck. Pity I can't come with you, but I'm sure it'll work out. Take care of Judi, you hear?"
Yuen laughed at that, Judi was less amused. Before she could say something, one of the guild clerks approached Danzai.
"The guildmaster would like to see you."
"Eh?" Danzai was a bit confused, but not too worried. "Alright, lead the way. Good luck to you two." Danzai walked off, nonchalantly. Judi let out an exasperated breath. "He does realize I'm not a kid right? Augh."
Yuen laughed at her once more, and the two walked out of the guild.
