First Pic From Polanski's Carnage
Exclusive sneak peek at all-star cast

Off-screen trials and tribulations aside, the prospect of a new Roman Polanski film is always mouthwatering - and we're delighted to bring to you the first pictures from the Polish maestro's new film, the all-star drama Carnage.

Formerly known as God Of Carnage, but presumably renamed once it was decided that geeks wouldn't mistakenly pay to see the movie in the belief that it's about a terrible Spider-Man villain, Carnage boasts a frankly stunning cast in the shape of Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz. They play two couples who come together one evening to discuss the behaviour of their children, only for things to quickly become heated.

Sounds like a breeding ground for heated exchanges and award-level performances, and maybe a return to the sort of dark, claustrophobic, internalised material that is perfect for Polanski, but when we spoke to Foster recently, she said it might not be quite as serious as expected. "It all happens in real-time, so it’s about an hour and 45 minutes of negotiation between two sets of parents and how it all falls apart," she said. "Kind of like Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, but a little funnier. There’s a lot of wit.”

We've got three pictures from the film. The first, an official still, shows Foster (as Penelope), Reilly (as her husband, Michael), Winslet (as Nancy) and Waltz (as her husband, Alan), presumably before things turn sour. Then there's a shot of Polanski in full-on director mode and, finally, a neat pic of four director's chairs. Not sure who they belong to, though.

The movie was co-written by Polanski, and shot - as is his wont - entirely in Paris over a brisk five week period from February. It's currently in post-production and, if that takes about as long as the shoot, expect to see this one out by the end of the year, in time for Oscar contention.

Sony Picture Classics has made the deal for US distribution

Quote:

NEW YORK (April 14, 2011) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release Roman Polanski’s new film, CARNAGE, in North America. Polanski penned the script with Yasmina Reza, which is adapted from Reza’s 2009 Tony Award® winning play God of Carnage. CARNAGE is produced by Said Ben Said (THE WITNESSES, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN) and stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly. SPC expects an end of year release.

Sony Pictures Classics acquired the film from Said Ben Said and ICM’s Jeff Berg.

Polanski assembled an all-star crew to work on CARNAGE, director of photographer Pawel Edelman (THE GHOST WRITER, RAY, THE PIANIST), production designer Dean Tavoularis (THE NINTH GATE, THE GODFATHER, THE OUTSIDERS), editor Herve de Luze (THE GHOST WRITER, WILD GRASS, TELL NO ONE), costume designer Milena Canonero (DARJEELING LIMITED, MARIE ANTOINETTE, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) and composer Alberto Iglesias (TALK TO HER, VOLVER, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, THE KITE RUNNER).

Set in contemporary Brooklyn, New York, CARNAGE centers on two pairs of parents one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos.

“In today’s world of moviemaking, Roman Polanski, his screenwriting partner Yasmina Reza, his cast, his crew, and his producer Said Ben Said represent the best of the best. We are so fortunate and pleased to bring CARNAGE, which promises to be an experience of intense emotion and hilarity, to the American audiences,” states Sony Pictures Classics.

Said Ben Said and Sony Pictures Classics last worked together on the film I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG.

"Set in contemporary Brooklyn, New York," which looks like Paris very much lol. Carnage has only one set, no outdoor shots right?

These look great. Waltz looks like an ass, Kate looks stuck up, John a bumbling sweet fool (who married way to hot for himself), and Jodie looks beautiful. :cheers
