Tranmere came out the stronger of the two sides as Charlie Miller saw his attempt at a chip go wide of former Tranmere keeper David Martin's post. With 11 minutes gone MK Dons had their first chance of the match, and it took a strong hand by Peter Gulacsi to keep the scores level. Luke Chadwick played in Jermaine Easter and the striker found space to shoot but Gulacsi stuck out a hand and turned the ball behind for a corner. It took a good block from Dean Lewington to keep the scores level on 25 minutes after Lucas Akins had found Adam McGurk in space. However, 10 minutes later there was nothing Lewington could do about Tranmere's opening goal. McGurk picked up the ball in midfield and fed Ian Thomas-Moore on the right hand side. The striker beat Gary MacKenzie before whipping the ball into the box. The ball evaded Alan Mahon in the center but Lucas Akins was following in behind and the striker smashed it past Martin to put Tranmere one up. Angelo Balanta should have levelled the scores in first half injury time but he somehow missed the target from 5 yards when it was easier to score. Martin was called into action two minutes into the second half as Enoch Showunmi headed the ball towards goal. Soon after Tranmere had another chance but this time Alan Mahon could only fire over the top. On 68 minutes it didn't matter. Ash Taylor ran over to take a corner and from that corner, the ball hit Gary MacKenzie and bounced into the net. Tranmere should have made it 3 with 10 minutes left but goalscorer Lucas Akins couldn't double his tally as he saw his shot saved by Martin. Martin was in action again 3 minutes later as he saved an Enoch Showunmi header. It proved to be the last significant action of the match and Tranmere went home with all 3 points.
