I have always believed Mothra's flying scenes in this movie are much more effectively rendered(i.e. realistic). Comparable to GMK. Thoughts on this EM?

I agree with you. Mothra displayed more of a realistic feeling in this movie. She looked good in GMK but not as good as this one. |

I really liked this movie. This is my favorite Godzilla suit, and his entrance was spectacular. As noted above, Mothra's appearence was very good, although I thought it an odd way to get her to come. I like Kiryu, and in my opinion, he is the best Mechagodzilla ever. I hated seeing Godzilla get silked, but most of all, I hated seeing him get drilled. That hurt me almost as much as it hurt Godzilla. |

This movie kind of crystallized what I've believed all along: That while Mothra protects the earth, Godzilla is her ultimate weapon, that WE conveniently made for her in 1955. Before Godzilla, she just sealed them away in a deep sleep or something...now, with Godzilla she has the ability to blow them to bits! Is it wrong of me to see her as manipulative, especially since she seems to be the oldest of the monsters? So, in SOS, of course she wouldn't want Mankind to have the bones of Godzilla...he's HER weapon, not theirs! Great film BTW...I'm gonna miss Kiryu. |

I fail to see how you think Goji is her weapon, she by no means wanted Goji to be her weapon. |

Check out the original Godzilla versus The Thing. The larvae beat Godzilla, putting an end to his rampage, but DON'T kill him. Godzilla versus The Sea Monster. Why not let Godzilla be destroyed along with the island? To keep him around. After all, soon after, aliens started doing nasty things and bringing Ghidorah to earth and such and who was there on the front line? Goji. Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster. Who rallied the troops for attack? Mothra. Who did she approach first? Goji, who even offered his tail for her so she could more quickly ascend Mount Fuji. Much later, when she and Battra had Godzilla at their mercy, why not fly him into the upper atmosphere and suffocate him? Why simply seal him away? Simple. She knew that something like SpaceGodzilla was coming and needed Goji's strength to defeat him. Please don't get me wrong. It takes a lot of energy being Earth oldest protector. But if Godzilla, Mothra's ultimate weapon, didn't face Kaiser Ghidorah, who would? |

That one is logical, do you expect a larvae to defeat Ghidorah. It was Mothra's courage that impressed Goji and Rodan to help her, and they had a different outlook on evil ever since.
Somebody had to defend the Earth in Mothra's stead. Who else but Godzilla? Mothra was saving the Earth on her own out in space. She knew that Godzilla's natural instict was to protect the world. Mothra was guiding Miki in guiding Godzilla with her telepathy too, don't forget that.
Actually, if Mothra wouldn't have battled Gigan and defeated him, Godzilla probably would have eventually died. |

Exactly. Gigan had been revamped and together, they were seriously taking the fight to Godzilla, who had been marching across half the planet already. Together, they were much too powerful, much too agile, and fresh. Mothra evened the odds, and then, later with the help of the Cosmos, helped Godzilla win. Could any other kaiju, except one that absorbs energy, have been able to withstand the beating he took and then survive being zapped? Hence the title, ultimate weapon. |

No I guess not. But that doesn't necessarily make Goji or Mothra invincible. |

Nah, they aren't invincible. But really, who has a better chance of defeating Mothra than Goji? Or vice-versa? The existence of one makes the other strong. They are Ying and Yang, equal but opposite, without which the Balance is sent spiralling out of control. She is the experience, the vision, the inner strength of the two. He is the brute force necessary to defeat all enemies to the Cosmos and the Balance. Together, they are unstoppable. I think the earth is in good hands...er, claws, or something.

That is indeed, wow! I'm still astonished when I read it. The two may seem like enemies most of the time, but when the entire world is in danger, they join forces, which is logical.

I have a big 250-lb male Akita-Inu that is black and grey I nicknamed Godzilla (his real name is Ryu-Ookami) because of the way he watches the yard. He usually sleeps all the time, but if something enters his yard that doesn't belong there, he's instantly wide-awake, prepared to challenge it. And I mean anything or anyone! He only backs down if I or my wife tells him to. Like Goji. Of course, in this movie, it was Kiryu that was doing most of the serious butt-kicking. The scene where Kiryu shoves Godzilla through the Capitol Building was spectacular, and if you ever get to see the making of stuff and see how long it took them to set up a shot that lasted five or six seconds on camera...those technicians at Toho are truly dedicated. |

They do appear to be happy in an exhausted, dirty sort of way. And make no mistake...model builders for movies are extremely proud of their craft. My brother is one and he was part of making Jurassic Park, Independence Day, and Star Trek: Nemesis. He said once, and I quote "It was the coolest thing in the world to build a seven foot Enterprise and Smash it to pieces on camera." |

If Toho could figure out some sort of way to make building the set less expensive, but still look great, then maybe we wouldn't have to wait so long for the next G-film. Of course the LAST thing I would want would be that they resort to using stock footage like they did in the Showa era, or that the sets look great until they start to fall apart and then it's so easy to tell its a model its annoying. |

The sets have nothing to do with the wait for the next Godzilla film. Toho's crews are able to build those things quickly and cheaply, which is why they have often done a film (or more) a year. They also have a stockpile of miniature buildings that they reuse for multiple movies. In KILL BILL VOL 1 there's an aerial view of Tokyo that was made up of buildings from GMK and GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA. The reason Toho is taking a break from Godzilla and kaiju is that audiences quit going to the films. MEGAGUIRUS had the lowest ticket sales of any Godzilla film since 1975, GMK rebounded with strong box office based on great word-of-mouth and Shusuke Kaneko, sales dropped slightly for GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA, and dropped a lot for GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS. Toho spent a lot of money and brought in Ryuhei Kitamura to get audiences back for GODZILLA: FINAL WARS, and that film tanked at the box office. Since GFW, Toho released the kaiju film SAZER X and Kadokawa released GAMERA: THE BRAVE, neither of which were hits. There has been at least one kaiju film every year since 1991 and the studios are all saying audiences are now bored with genre. Toho is taking a long break to let interest build again like it did between TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA and GODZILLA 1985. |

I blame it on reality TV. I've heard my own kids (traitors!) say that such and such in a Godzilla film wasn't realistic, or that such and such wasn't realistic in LOTR. But that's okie. Interest in reality TV will wane, a renewed interest in sci-fi and fantasy will emerge, and then we shall be there for the true Return of the King: Godzilla! Actually, I also hope they make a more mature Mothra film, not so kiddy or preachy. |

American television doesn't have much of an impact (if any) on these films. As far as I know, SURVIVOR and other American shows aren't playing in Japan. The only kaiju film in the past 20 years to get a wide theatrical release in the US is GODZILLA 2000, so the Japanese studios don't consider that much of an option any more. They know the films will get picked up for US home video, but these movies are primarily made for Japanese audiences. Its the poor box office in Japan that has put a temporary stop to the Godzilla series. The market was simply oversaturated. Most film series here (James Bond, Star Wars, Spider-Man, etc) release a new film every 3-4 years. That gives time for anticipation to build for a new movie. Toho released a Godzilla or kaiju film every December for 16 straight years, plus there were more than a dozen similar films released by other studios. People just burned out on the genre. I think Toho now has the right idea. After a 9 year layoff, audiences turned out for Godzilla's return in 1984. Toho is going to repeat that formula and let demand build again.
I'd like that too, but not until after a long break. |
