Yikes, compared to the novels some of you are writing, this is just a little tale. It was something I wrote for school a year or so ago (in chemistry, an option for a project about radiation), so don't be insulted by my simplistic explanation of Godzilla and his powers. My current "full-sized" story is a work in progress, so for now, I hope you enjoy this... Titan vs. Godzilla The monster Godzilla had ravaged civilization for fifty years. While his rampages were most often restricted to Japan- and even then rarely more than once a year- in recent months, the frequency and range of his attacks had increased greatly. He had appeared anywhere from eastern Asia to Australia. While biologists have been unable to find an explanation for this increased aggression, it has been determined that the monster’s attacks must be stopped. The UN held a meeting in New York to debate this issue. It was decided that Godzilla was the aggressor in every attack; therefore, a counterattack was justified. The major subject of debate was how to kill the monster. His hide was thick enough to withstand the force of even missiles and torpedoes. In addition, any wounds that were inflicted upon the creature could be healed in a matter of moments. His cells had a unique ability to divide and reproduce at incredible speeds. It was theorized that prehistoric reptiles possessed a less dramatic, similar trait that evolution had discarded in modern species. Godzilla’s was much faster than any being, living or extinct, presumably due to his irradiated form, which accelerated his cells’ reproduction rate. It was finally decided that a vessel possessing nuclear weapons would attack Godzilla. Godzilla’s irradiated cells normally absorbed radiation and increased his strength, but it was theorized that nuclear energy in the form of an explosion would be too much to absorb. It would also reduce the beast to atoms, so no cell would be left to regenerate. Godzilla’s attack sites over the past few months had been mapped out and several locations- mostly Pacific islands were determined as sites with which to safely engage the beast. The device which contained the nuclear weaponry would be a very new device. It was a war machine known as the Titan. Titan specs • Titan is a ninety-foot tall, bipedal, tailed war machine. • Titan houses a nuclear reactor, its large size allowing for moderating equipment. • Titan possesses four back fins, which absorb moisture from the atmosphere to help cool the reactor. • The hydrogen from the moisture is also sent through Titan’s “throat” to his “mouth”, where the isotopes are bombarded with neutrons and radiation, which can instantaneously project from the mouth long distances; in effect, allowing Titan to “spit” controlled H-bomb explosions. • Titan’s arms house machine guns and can emit hot oil. • Titan’s tail houses a powerful flame-thrower. • Titan can be operated from a military computer in the near vicinity. After a few months of construction and testing, Titan was finally prepared for combat. Several pilots were being trained for the task of operating him, depending on which vicinity Godzilla would strike. Finally, Godzilla was detected on an uninhabited island several hundred miles south of Hawaii. Titan was immediately shipped there by an Australian vessel. Piloting it from a military jet would be Captains Joe Shumonn and Marie Silkin. “Alright, Titan has landed on Battle Site F. Godzilla is approximately 3 miles northeast, prepare to seek and engage.” Titan was quickly rolling across the landscape on its tread-like “feet” its infrared scanner easily detecting Godzilla. In minutes, the robot was within one thousand feet of the reptilian mutation, and everyone in the military aircraft a couple miles back were fighting butterflies. Godzilla stared curiously at the robot for a moment, but quickly came to the conclusion that it was hostile. He rushed the machine, which quickly rolled out of the beast’s path and countered by slashing it across the thigh. Several layers of scales were penetrated, but the attack failed to faze Godzilla. “At least Godzilla’s radiation isn’t affecting Titan,” Marie tried to casually comment as she fought to pull the robot back from Godzilla. She wasn’t fast enough. The saurian swung his tail around and struck the robot. Titan’s stabilizers managed to stay upright, but Godzilla followed up by body-slamming the robot. This time Titan went down. “Maybe we should have built a bigger robot,” Joe joked grimly, knowing that if the robot matched Godzilla’s 200 feet, it would not have the capabilities it had. He punched in some commands, and Titan blasted Godzilla point-blank with some machine-gun bullets. The bullets penetrated Godzilla’s flesh. Titan’s sensors showed the bullets quickly dissolving in Godzilla’s radioactive veins. In moments, the bullet holes repaired themselves. “He’s not letting us get far enough!” Joe cried in frustration. “Well, would you?” Marie replied. Titan attempted to roll away. Godzilla kept pace for a while, with speed that was impressive for such a massive, tail-dragging, beast, but Titan finally managed to put some distance between it and the monster. The aforementioned monster came to a halt- apparently giving up, but the crew in the plane knew from their training what was coming. Sure enough, Godzilla’s three rows of dorsal plates began glowing blue. The beast opened his mouth. “Well, here’s where we find out if Titan is really radiation-proof,” Marie muttered. She knew Godzilla could shoot jets out of the sky. There was no way Titan could dodge Godzilla’s deadly atomic ray- a stream of sheer energy, mostly radiation. Soon enough, a blue beam shot from Godzilla’s mouth, and struck the smaller robot, knocking it over. Soon the beam ceased. “How’s our boy doing?” Marie asked. “His hull is hot enough to boil water, but he’s unharmed,” Joe replied. “I think we need to buy us some time.” Titan immediately sprayed oil at Godzilla from his downed position. The hot oil failed to even burn through Godzilla’s outer layer of scales, but it blinded the radioactive mutant and allowed Titan to rise. Godzilla began to rush at Titan again, but the pilots quickly sprayed the ground at the juggernaut’s feet, upsetting him, and sending tremors through the ground when he hit. “Time to torch him,” Joe stated, entering the next command. Titan pointed its tail at Godzilla, and shot flames at the oil-covered beast. Fires spread across his body, but he still did not allow Titan the distance it needed to fire its main weapon. Instead, Godzilla lashed out with his tail, curling it around Titan’s arm. Godzilla then swung the machine around a semi-circle. The stabilizers could not handle the sudden motion and the robot fell. Godzilla wasted no further time. He began kicking and stomping the fallen vessel. Titan’s armor was durable, but it could not stand up to this consistent abuse for long. Godzilla then lowered his head to take a bite out of Titan. Suddenly, due to quick thinking by the pilots, Titan moved slightly, causing one of his four moisture-absorbing rods to go into Godzilla’s mouth. Godzilla bit it off. “Well, that can be a curse or a blessing,” Marie muttered under her breath. The reasoning for both sides of her statement immediately became apparent. The readings for Titan showed that the reactor was just barely under control; at the same time, the coolant was nullifying Godzilla’s inner radiation, and he was quickly developing a case of lethargy. “Let’s get Titan out of dodge!” Joe cried. Soon enough, Titan was rolling away, its reactor temperature dangerously floating upwards with a quarter of its coolant supplies gone. Godzilla, meanwhile, was quickly on the recovery. The one rod had been overcome by his constant production of radiation and was dissolved within him. The minor internal damage it had caused was being quickly repaired. “We should fire now!” cried Joe. “We’ll never get another chance!” “Negative! The reactor is going critical!” Marie desperately yelled. “Titan needs to stay still for a second and stabilize!” She began speaking into her intercom. Seconds later, flares shot up a few miles offshore from the ship that had brought Titan in. Godzilla turned, distracted. As the captains watched him from their plane, they saw his eyes flicker in a small, but unmistakable gesture. They watched as his eyes followed the flare trails down, until he was staring at the ship three miles away. Then his back began to glow blue… “Get out of there now!” Joe radioed the ship. “We’re three miles away, we’re out of...jeez!” screamed the captain. “Are you alright?” asked Marie. “We’ve been hit, but we’re fine,” said the shaken, yet relieved captain. “I think we’ll get a little farther away now.” “Well, now that they’re safe, how’s Titan doing?” asked Joe. “We’ll need to make manual repairs soon, but for now, it’s safe to fire the nukes,” Marie replied. “Then let’s fire ‘em already and get this done with!” cried Joe. “Affirmative,” Marie said. They punched in the necessary commands. Titan’s mouth opened. Godzilla turned, focusing on his robotic opponent once again. The beast opened his own mouth as his dorsal plates attained a familiar glow. “Come on, fire, fire, fire!” Joe screamed in an outburst that he immediately regretted. For Titan would be fastest on the draw. Since there were no warheads that carried the explosion, it was a sudden, fiery holocaust that engulfed Godzilla. “Is he alive?” Joe asked. “Can’t determine that yet, but Titan is in trouble. That blast overheated the reactor. We gotta find a way to fix him fast or we’ll have another H-bomb blast that isn’t controlled,” Marie replied anxiously. Finally, the explosion cleared. “There’s no trace of Godzilla’s DNA, but the radioactivity patterns are different than what the test predicted. What does it mean?” Joe wondered. “So we have one possible nuclear disaster, and one definite one, right next door to each other, and we don’t know what to do about either,” Marie said in frustration. Titan stood silently on the sandy island, staring straight into an invisible sphere of gamma radiation. The only evidence of the ferocious battle was the charred ground. Otherwise it was very quiet, even peaceful, if there was not an impending nuclear threat. It was the calm before the nuclear storm… THE END? |
