I have no time on my hands whatsoever. I am writing two stories, WAA and a novel at the same time. And I just got a ton of notepad paper from out of nowhere. The result? I'm taking on a forth writing project.
I am going to write my own version of a classic story/movie that I've been wanting to do for years. It will follow the same basic format as the originals, and in that sense will hardly offer anything new. However, my characters, their relationships with each other, and how they deal with their proablem will be a tad different. Also I hope to blend the best of both story and movie into my work. But this is where I need your help. For those of you that have read the original short story and/or have seen the movie (or not), I really need your ideas, and suggestions. When you read the story, was there any part of it that you thought should have been in then movie? When you watched the movie, were there any scenes you thought could/should have been done differently? Or is there anything at all which you would have simply added and/or deleted from either one, and for what reason? Or are there any ideas, different points-of-view, or anything else you may have thought could/would go well with the plot? Anything at all? I'm all ears.
This revised version, once completed, I am actually very seriously considering submiting it as a screen play to Hollywood. Yes, I well know that I have a better chance of walking the moon then I do of having a movie based on my screen play which in turn is based on an old movie which in turn is based on an even older short story. But hey, I can dream can't I? Besides, %99.9 of all of Hollywood's movie over the past several years have been nothing but remakes anyhow. If I don't send it to a specific film studio, then perhaps to a certain producer or director. But even if that never happens, I still want to write a good story. So what story/movie have I been talking about all this time? What classic film do I intend to rewrite? One word: mushroom. Now, let me say this; I am by no means trying to "out-do" either the original story or film, but merely wish to add my two cents, if you will. So, please, be enthusiastic and helpful if possible; I need it.

I wish you luck with your story Evan. I too have thought about writing a novel and submitting it. However, if it wasn't for my stupid computer getting a virus, I could have done so by now. You know I'll be here to help you if you need me.

hey Good Luck with your projects but if you think having four storys to write is bad try haveing over 25 indvidule projects that you work on sporadically but will eventtually finshe and publish (well mabey not all of them but most) now theirs a clutterd desktop . but as for your screenplay I have never read the short story so I cant help you thier but as for the moive I would suggest defenitly keep that horror/suspense feel to it, you may want even kick it up a notch. the horror moive feel is was truly kept matango from becoming a rather silly film. and the ending needs more fleshing out it was a great ending but could have been better since for a moment your Like " okay....so he wants to go back and finshe becoming a mushroom." it take a moment to regester that he has become a sideshow freak for these scientests to poke and prodd. My humble suggusetion would be to show more of the charcters pain at having escaped the island but not its curse and now has lost his only chance a peace since he will never find it among are socity now. just a few thoughts and again Good Luck I hope you suceed in your goals . wow I've got get cracking on that novel thats been sitting on my desktop!

I know what you're going through; in truth, I have at least two dozen stories (both short and full length novels) that are cluttering my computer to no end. Some I haven't touched in ages; but because of a lack of time I don't get to think much on my stories (much less write them). So I've dicided only to focus on the ones that I REALLY want to finish and the ones that I can actually FINISH. Hence I've lowered the list to four (now including Matango). However, since I'll be away for a month (and away from a computer and hence my stories) I'll be taking Matango along with me so that I can work on it when I have free time (yeah right). (Matango, you see, isn't on my computer; rather, as I said before, I'm writing it by hand (something I rarely do), and as we all know, it's easier to carry note pads around instead of computers (god I need a lap-top)). Anyways, perhaps tomorow or sometime soon I'l post the original Matango short story (called "a voice in the darkness") so that you know where the idea came from, what the intential comcept was, and hence you can all further give me even more great ideas (which I thank you for doing so far).

I think that I'm also going to focus on different elements in the story. For example, it will show man, when put in such a situation, will become no more civilized then a dog; that in the end, he has no choice but to break down and give in to nature, and ultimately transform back into the earth as plants. Also I'll focus on the drug element of the mushrooms (ever hear of "magic Japanese mushroom?"); of course it'll be an anti-drug message, and fits rather well, I think. When, again, put into this situation, the temptation to eat the only food sorce on the island grows stronger and stronger. And once you give in, you're suddenly overcome by the mushrooms in every way, start acting funny, start seeing things, start feeling oddly (high), and ultimately, become what you eat (bad pun intended). Also, the phycological effects the story will have on the characters will be a strong fix of the plot; their relationships failing apart, turning in-human. And I hope that when reading the story that you will be frimly attached to at least one character; I want a variaty of personalities, someone for each person to relate to. The ending will be a bit of a mix of both the original story and movie, with my own two cents thrown in. The boat that they stay in will be much different, and the Matango will be much creppier. I do want to make this a very thought-provoking, page-turning, and captivating teal. With your help I maybe able to make it such.;) |

As for the psychological aspects of the Screenplay. I have to suggest watching Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn. Specifficly focus on the parts with Ash being foroced to hide in this rundown cabin, with a demonic force taunting and playing with him outside. If you get around some of the goofiness, the parts where Ash is slowly driven insane by the Deadites is very chilling, like when his relefection from a mirror and starts taunting him "We Just Choped Up Our GirlFriend With a Chainsaw!", realated to this statement, Lindas severed head bites him, and he has to run out to a tool shed and put the head in a vice(The Head is demonic and ugly) and after wrestling the chainsaw from the rest of Lindas body, Ash is about to finish the ugly demon head off when it suddenly turns to normal Linda and is crying; "Why do you Want to Hurt Me Ash? You said we'd be together forever" and with a painned cry, Ash is forced to destory his loves head, although he knows its really evil. Like a said, I'd study the films psychological aspects (But you may be lost in the Badassness that is Ash Williams!). TO see what kinda' horrific efects insanity can have on the human mind, and the utter creepiness it can create if put in the right hands, which would be Sam Raimis hands in this case. But a word of warning, stay away from Evil Dead One, and Evil Dead 3:Army Of Darkness if your taking my suggestions. Army Of Darkness has pretty much no horror aspect what so ever, just to show Ash being badass, shooting oneliners and kicking Deadite tail. ALthought cool, not what you want to be looking for. Evil Dead One on the other hand, is just a lower budget version of Evil Dead 2 with the addition of a scene that will cause the utmost embarassment if your caught watching. It involves Demon Tree Braches A Tied Up Women And a Dress Your smart, so figure it out. SO Thats Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn. Good Luck! |

I like that idea. The mind can play a lot of tricks on you when you're nuts. Oh, wait, the now-mushroom former crew members destroyed all the mirrors on the ship.... maybe I can fit it in anyhow. I've been brain stroming today, and have four of the main characters down already, and aready know how one of them will be doomed. I feel sorry for him though...

Mirriors aren't the only thing that reflect
![]() So yeah, check it out when you have the time. Its a very creepy film to sit and watch with a lady friend... And Ash is just to damn cool. The movie is slow right up to this single line; Groovy Then its all demon ass kicking until the great ending which goes into Army Of Darkness. |

I've also been studing about mushroom too so as to get the right feel for the story (you won't believe how interesting a fungi can be!). Now of course Matango is a new species of mushroom, but nonetheless it should have some real-life relatives; so which kind of mushroom should I base Matango off of? I'm thinking I might go with the "gray fungi" from the original story, but I also like the brown/red/yellow mushroom from the movie. Any ideas? |

Actually that's what mushrooms eat! You should pick up an encyclopedia then; it's amazing how these mushroom grow, feed themsleves, breed, etc, etc. When you know your mushrooms, Matango makes a lot more sense. But, best of all, they're the best food you can grow! I love to eat mushroom.....

I'm still working on the story, so you guys know, and have the basic concept of most of the character already, and some of their fates. I've also renamed one of my guys and have a few pages written. However, I'm kind of stumped. Though I want to draw from the film as a form of inspiration, I don't want to copy the events in it word by word; I need to create new and scary scenes, moments, etc. I'm even trying to find out which "mushroom-people" to use--do they look like the ones in the movie? The book? Both? Or something different altogether? I'm kind of going through writer's block, so if anyone can give a wroth-while idea or what-if, then by all means. |

Here's something I've been thinking about. In addition to the "drug metophor" in my story here by the mushrooms/fungi, I read somewhere that perhaps the characters in Matango reprisented the "seven deadly sins". Do you think I should take that apporch to the story? And how many characters should I include? The typical seven? I was thinking maybe 8--four guys and three women. Thoughts? Anyone? On anything? Help? Please?
