Kaiju Master
|
Well, this is what I get for actually predicting I'd write a story in advance: I get interested in a totally different one. No origin of Rodanguirus yet, folks, but here's a Showa-era tale: Earth Destruction Directive The time is 1973, after the events of Godzilla vs. Gigan. Godzilla, Anguirus, Rodan, Minya, Varan, and Gorosaurus have been living peacefully on an uncharted island in the south Pacific. The Ogasawara islands project has just recently been set into motion. The UN military forces are searching for any hostile kaiju they can find to capture. Godzilla and Anguirus slowly hauled themselves ashore after a relaxing swim. Anguirus looked up, offering a honk as greeting to Rodan, who was lazily soaring to his perch, a catch of seafood in his beak. Anguirus made his way to his small cove at the foot of the same mountain Rodan nested on, stretching and preparing for a nap. Godzilla went off to search for Minya. Suddenly, a ground-shaking blast rocked the ground! Godzilla staggered, nearly thrown off his feet. More blasts followed at an increasing pace. The ground began to split open, sending waves of fiery heat upward! Godzilla called to Anguirus, and the duo dashed back toward the beach. Rodan bellowed to them overhead, lost in the smoke and flame. An explosion went off under Anguirus’s feet, sending him rolling on his side. He recovered and scampered off with Godzilla. The trio of kaiju regrouped in the ocean a safe distance off of their fast-sinking island. None of them saw Varan, Gorosaurus, or Minya on or leaving the island. The group decided to split up and search for their missing fellows. Rodan vs. Mogu Rodan blazed across the ocean, carefully keeping his speed not too high over Mach 1. He did not want to overlook one of his friends by flying too fast. He tore north, scanning several small islands with no sign of life. He had been flying only a couple thousand feet above the ground, but decided to raise his altitude. His eyes were good enough to see a kaiju on the ground, and from a higher altitude, his ectothermic body would give off a vapor trail, making it easy for his kaiju brethren to spot him. Rodan focused on feeling the wind currents. With his abilities to navigate through Earth’s magnetic field, and detect wind patterns with ease, Rodan was counting on finding the type of current that the glider Varan might favor. Varan’s method of aerial transportation was very different from his own, but they had spent enough time together for Rodan to know the kind of conditions Varan could use. At the same time, he was sure to search for any of the kaiju on the ground. He eventually came on to southern Japan. Recognizing the region, he realized that this was probably about as far as any of the missing kaiju could get, even if the explosion struck their side of the island first. He was so focused on his friends that he did not notice the hailstorm he suddenly flew into. Rodan was taken by surprise, but was none too concerned. A storm that seemed vast to humanity could be navigated in seconds by a supersonic kaiju like Rodan. Rodan made a U-turn and flew south. He picked up speed again, and plowed straight ahead, wings held level, vapor trail blazing, in that amazing way Rodan managed to attain unbelievable speeds with virtually no effort. Unfortunately, it was doing no good. Rodan had reached the coast and the hailstorm was pounding on him as harshly as ever. After his lengthy flight with no break, the icy cold of the storm was starting to affect the volcano-born reptile. It was nothing serious, but if he couldn’t escape soon, he’d need to stop. Since he couldn’t get out of this odd hailstorm, Rodan took a different approach- he flew straight up. There was a reason Rodan has been referred to as “the samurai warrior of the skies”. It was child’s play to fly straight up into a hailstorm at Mach speeds and get above the clouds. Unfortunately, Rodan had flown several thousand feet up, and there was no sign of the source of the storm. Rodan was not only puzzled, but he was tiring. The hail was getting more concentrated, and some ice was starting to cling on his wings. The cold-blooded Rodan, while he was fairly resistant to cold temperatures, was not prepared for prolonged exposure to concentrated freezing weather. He went into a dive, heating himself up, relaxing his muscles, and shaking off some ice. He broke out of his supersonic flight and hovered there. He began to flap his wings rapidly, clearing some of the storm away. It didn’t last long. In fact, the hail started coming down harder, to the point of being painful. Even in the storm, Rodan’s sharp eyes noticed that the hail some distance away was not coming down nearly as hard. Rodan’s puzzlement became suspicion. He hovered there for a moment, then without warning, he took off at full speed. He flew a short distance, and then quickly spiraled, so he ended up higher than he was and facing back where he had received his pounding. His sudden move had exposed his stealthy assailant. It was a kaiju unfamiliar to Rodan. Its blue belly blended into the icy haze it was creating. In striking contrast, the rest of its body was red, and Rodan wondered how it had evaded him so long. It had a draconian head with a yellow crest, and bat-like wings. Curiously, it had no legs, but it had two normal-sized arms with icicles for claws. There was a hole in each palm. It had a very long tail covered with ice shards, and tipped with a club with very long sharp icicles. Rodan furiously kicked into high gear, aiming for a head-on supersonic collision. Unfortunately, his reflexes were already slightly slowed due to the time in the freezing weather. The mystery kaiju was about to make things worse. Holding its hands in front of it, it released an icy spray. Rodan’s ramming attack was foiled, and chunks of ice were frozen to his body. Then, the kaiju cracked his spiked tail down on the back of Rodan’s skull. Rodan lost his flight for a second, but after dropping a slight distance, he recovered, feeling his own blood on the back of his neck. The creature held its tail up, the red bloodstain clearly visible on the blue-white tip. The beast grinned menacingly, then suddenly spewed chunks of ice from its maw. Rodan did not expect the maneuver at all, but still managed to kick up enough of a wind to lessen the impact. Nonetheless, the projectiles made their mark on his wings, though some were deflected harmlessly off his armored chest. When some creatures are freezing, bleeding, and totally out of their element, they may consider a timely retreat. Rodan, however, is not an ordinary being. While not the most powerful being in the kaiju-ridden universe, he is certainly one of the most tenacious and aggressive. For Rodan, being on the brink of defeat simply meant he must conquer his foe that much quicker. Rodan suddenly blasted toward his foe at full speed. His opponent expected him to use the same attack method again. Rodan, however, came to a sudden halt, allowing his sonic boom to jolt the icy fiend. With the kaiju stunned, Rodan attacked, clamping his talons on the beast’s shoulders. He battered its wings with his own, and pecked furiously at the creature’s face. The monster’s red flesh was relatively soft, so Rodan had the satisfaction of sinking his beak and talons into it and drawing blue misty blood. The beast couldn’t hit Rodan with his arm spray because he was on its shoulders, so he attempted to use his mouth projectile. Rodan’s plated chest was positioned directly in front of its mouth, however, and at point-blank, it had no time to pick up speed. The monster seemed helpless to attack Rodan. Rodan had not consciously planned this. He had attacked on pure desperation. The fact that he had his opponent so helpless was just a testament to his combat experience. However, he had not managed to block everything. The creature’s tail was still free, and Rodan left himself wide open. Rodan once again felt a stabbing pain as the monster brained him on the back of the skull. He lost his grip. His adversary immediately pressed its advantage and blasted him right in the face with ice projectiles. Some of it froze to Rodan’s face, adding to the pain and load of his already half-frozen wings. Rodan frantically struck back, clamping down on his assailant’s lower jaw. The creature bit back, but Rodan’s beak did not even feel the teeth. Rodan then slipped free of the kaiju’s bite, and moving too fast to stop, clasped its tail in his talons, and took off at full speed. The beast’s tail was pulled to its full length and it was hauled along involuntarily for the ride. Rodan flew out of the storm and immediately began feeling better. His opponent was currently helpless. Rodan was flying too fast for it to lift up its head or arms to attack. It was also feeling the brunt of Rodan’s vapor trail. Still, with large chunks of ice bonded painfully to his body, as well as blood loss out the back of the head, he couldn’t last at this pace. He had to give up the advantage. Looking at the ground, he saw what he needed. They were coming up to a mountain range. Rodan dove at the base of one of the mountains. He then released his foe and immediately picked up altitude. The hapless opponent went crashing into one mountainside. Rodan landed on the other side, using the rough ground to remove the ice from his body. He then turned around and stared at the mountain, waiting for his foe to recover. It didn’t take long. The mountain began to turn to ice, then a hole was punched through. Sure enough, Rodan’s newfound opponent was there, flying low to the ground, straight at him. Rodan stood on the ground, poised for battle, though he knew he’d need a breather soon. Fortunately, he did not have to gamble on whether he had the stamina to win the battle. A brown-green figure dove from one of the mountains and crashed into the icy dragon from behind. The villainous creature struggled to a hovering position to face down his new foe. It looked into the face of Varan! Snarling at being hit from behind, the beast prepared to use its favored tail-bashing attack, but it was beat to the punch by a tail that was possibly more painful than its own. The beast found itself pierced by four long translucent spines from Varan. Having had enough, the kaiju turned and fled. Rodan considered pursuing it, but decided against it. The battle was won, and he had found Varan. The latter reminded him that he had a more important mission than satisfying grudges. Besides, though he’d never admit it, he needed a break. He greeted Varan and they planned what to do next. |

Kaiju Master

Hunting and Hunted Anguirus paddled northwest from his ruined island home. He was quite an adept swimmer, using his legs as rudders and for additional speed, while his tail was his main driving force. He was mainly a surface swimmer, because his spiny back was not exactly streamlined. Across the surface, he could move very swiftly. He could not search nearly as quickly as Rodan, but even the supersonic flier could not cover all ground, underwater being a particular place that were exclusive to Anguirus’s searching abilities. Anguirus would periodically dive underwater to search for his kaiju acquaintances. He knew that Varan and Minya had aquatic abilities. He did not know what happened to Gorosaurus, but knew that if he couldn’t swim, then Godzilla would find him back on the island. He eventually found a disruption in the ocean floor. Due to his own burrowing abilities, Anguirus quickly recognized it as a kaiju-made tunnel. He could have burrowed into it, but if the creature had opted to tunnel under the water, then it probably would not take kindly to having its tunnel flooded. Anguirus instead followed along the ocean floor. Eventually, he came to shore on New Guinea. On land, he found the creature had come to the surface and continued across the land. Inspecting and sniffing the hole, Anguirus determined the creature was….Gorosaurus?! How the heck could Gorosaurus manage to burrow? More useful and less confusing was the information that Gorosaurus’s essence was very recent: he had been here perhaps an hour ago! Anguirus galloped off in the direction of the scent. At full running speed, Anguirus could push three hundred miles per hour. It was certainly faster than Gorosaurus could travel- though with the recent tunneling revelation, Gorosaurus had probably been concealing the ability to fly or teleport. A military-class jet flew over Anguirus. Anguirus glanced upward, but the jet continued on its course, so he paid it no mind. Little did he know that it would cause him some trouble very soon. The jet contained US General Elkins along with Major Jenson. They were in the service of the UN and were involved in the special, top-secret Ogasawara Project. “Well, well, where’s that pin-cushion heading in such a hurry?” quipped Elkins. “It’s Angilas!” exclaimed Jenson, using the common Western variation. Elkins did not bother to correct him. He was not much of a fan of the “official” names for all the monsters. Everyone knew which ones they were talking about, right? “He hasn’t showed his face since he hit Japan last year,” Elkins remarked. “Wasn’t that an incident with Godzilla and Ghidorah?” asked the less experienced Jenson. “Yeah,” replied Elkins patiently as he signaled the pilot to hurry back to base to report this. “Ghidorah and some other alien were trashing eastern Tokyo when Anguirus and Godzilla showed up. Most of the populous areas were spared, but the military took a real beating trying to stop them. They also demolished some park or museum that was just about to open.” “Tough,” interjected Jenson. “Right. After they knocked each other around for a while, the aliens headed back to space, and Godzilla and Anguirus went back to who-knows-where. We’re lucky to find him. We’ll finally have something to show for this project besides an overgrown tarantula.” The plane carried the duo to a UN base in Australia. The situation was quickly reported to the leaders of the Ogasawara Project. In no time, a sortie of tanks and jets were dispatched to intercept Anguirus’s course. They were hauled to New Guinea with amazing speed due to a new technology the UN had discovered. This technology was gained from the people of Planet X. Scientists intently studied salvaged remains of their ships. The credit should largely be given to the World Space Authority’s former astronaut Glenn. He had since become an ambassador to Planet X, and through negotiations, was able to reach a relative peace with the rest of the planet and had convinced them to share their more advanced technology with the people of Earth. Thus, the UN now had access to prototype versions of the X people’s laser weaponry and transport technology. Neither was quite up to par with the technology used during the Great Monster War, but when combined with Earth’s Maser Cannon technology, could be quite formidable. When attached to planes, the transport bubble emitters could carry entire fleets across the ocean with relative ease. The problem lay in moving living beings. The motion made them difficult to target because the emitters took an extremely long time to completely form the force bubble. Even when a target was captive, if it were particularly aggressive, it could break free. Soon, a few jets had encapsulated the rest of the fleet in force bubbles, and spirited them toward New Guinea with no speed loss. The fleet was released a few miles ahead of Anguirus. It consisted of eight tanks and five jets. The tanks had large screens attached to the top, similar to maser projectors, but larger with three brown circles, looking identical to the bottom of a Xian craft. Anguirus was running along when the roar of jets filled the air again. He glanced up, and this time saw several jets. He started getting wary, but had no real worries. After all, the pathetic jets had never been a threat before. Suddenly, a blue straight beam arced down from one of the jets, hitting the ground near his shoulder, causing a powerful explosion to rock the ground. Anguirus was growing more concerned. These were more powerful than the typical masers humans used, which could slice through a tree and maybe singe the ground a little. A few jets swooped in front of Anguirus, sweeping the ground in front of him with lasers. Anguirus leapt to the side with agility that belied his bulky form. The explosions still sent him staggering. Then he noticed the tanks coming in from behind. More jets tried to cut him off. Then a tank fired odd blue rings at Anguirus. The quadruped had no time to dodge. The blue rings hit his left hind leg. It caused no pain, but an odd, semi-visible bubble formed around his leg. He couldn’t move it. He saw the other tanks closing in, raising their cannons. Anguirus realized they were trying to capture him. That was not going to happen. Anguirus desperately lunged at the nearest tank, giving a frenzied, honking howl. The straining of his leg muscles broke the hold the bubble had on him. Free, Anguirus swiped at the nearest tank with his right forepaw, sending it rolling over several times. It was well padded, so the driver was relatively unharmed, but it would not be functioning again. As the jets swooped in to antagonize Anguirus more, he leapt into the air. The pilot quickly ejected as he saw a forest of yellow spines shooting up at him. Anguirus’s back collided with the jet, shattering it like glass on his spines. The resulting explosion was totally absorbed by Anguirus’s spiny carapace. He hit the ground running. The tanks resumed firing. Anguirus threw his brawny form forward, dodging the next laser volley. He turned ninety degrees in the air, hit the ground, and turned completely around. He charged at the tanks, his onrushing, violently aggressive form too much for the bubbles to even form around. His horn scooped up one tank, sending it a couple hundred meters into the air. He kicked a second as he rushed on, sending it soaring backward. He brought his charge to a halt as he collided headfirst with a third tank, driving it halfway into the ground. He then leapt at the ground, quickly tunneling into the earth, ignoring the firing of the jets. The tanks hit the ground, drivers unconscious inside. The durable tanks had not exploded, but were virtually totaled. Unfortunately for the drivers, the designers had not predicted they would need to escape from a hundred-meter drop. Anguirus, using his upper horns to sense vibrations, pinpointed another pair of tanks’ location. He then used a common tunneling tactic. He had to be careful though; the tanks were far lighter than any ground-based kaiju. He swiftly ripped the ground out from under the tanks, coming so close to the surface that some of his back spines ruptured the ground around the tanks. He finally completed tunneling under them. The 35-ton tanks suddenly found less than ten feet of dirt supporting them. They quickly crashed through the ground and landed a hundred or so feet below. They were not going anywhere. Anguirus burst from the Earth nearby. He needed to get back on Gorosaurus’s trail, which the military had unceremoniously thrown him off. He bolted away at full speed. He then curled into sphere mode and rolled toward the coast. Once he built up speed, he could more than double his galloping pace. Soon he crashed into the water and swam off deep below the surface, hoping to find a sign of Gorosaurus again. “%#$$%! We’ve lost him!” exclaimed the pilot of one of the four jets. “I wish we could just say we didn’t find him,” said another. “We’ve lost a jet and six tanks, all brand-new and equipped with Xian technology, not to mention losing Angilas,” said the first in defeat. “May as well get ready for a chewing-out.” They then gathered their injured companions from the damaged vehicles and headed back to base. Part 3 is pretty much done, just wanna do some editing, I hope you enjoy! |
