They're many portrayals of Mothra, all the way from Mothra 61' to GFW. Which is your favorite?

I cast my vote for the original, Mothra(1961). In this movie Mothra's adversary is not a kaiju but rather a human, "Nelson"(played by Jerry Ito). I voted for this film because it shows what happens when you mess with the Fairies(aka The Peanuts)-just ask the citizens of Newkirk City.

I'm kind of twisted between the Mothra Trilogy and Tokyo S.O.S/GFW. In the Mothra Trilogy, Mothra displayed a great amount of power, which I think is good for a character such as her since she is a deity, and she is the protector of Earth. She deserves mystic powers that she syphones from the Earth to defeat her enemies (even though more physical combat would have been prefered) I also like how she was more compassionate and wise.

I like Tokyo S.O.S. because it did display the sort of power both manifested in the original Mothra and the Mothra trilogy. She cared for Humanity, and wanted to help them, yet if they made the wrong decision, she would turn against them. In GFW though, I imagined her character to be like Tokyo S.O.S, but due to the lack of description and screen time, nothing is really captured other than she is a good monster.

The original Mothra from MOTHRA and GODZILLA VS THE THING is my favorite. Great character, great design, great personality and a sense of power.

I was disappointed with the way the character was handled when they brought her back for GODZILLA AND MOTHRA.She looked too much like a plush doll, she barely moved, and the filmmakers gave her chicken feet (?) and very unnecessary beam weapons.

I thought the REBIRTH films took the character too far from Mothra's roots. Mothra was too small (the original Mothra had a wingspan of 250 meters; Leo's was 50 meters--- that's five times smaller) and had all kinds of crazy beam weapons, shapeshifting, and time traveling powers.

GMK was great return to basics. I liked that they Mothra more insect-like fatures (like the legs) and that they got rid of all the beams and went back to weapons and insect might actually have. All in all, a nice alternate take on a classic character.

The TOKYO SOS version combined the most popular classic version (from Gvs THE THING) and the most popular recent version (from GMK). This is widely considered the best version of Mothra since 1964.

It's hard to tell anything about Mothra in GFW because the character is onscreen for maybe 2 minutes and doesn't even rate a single comment from the heroes at the end of the movie.

I like GMK's design, but I'm disappointed in her character, because they changed it so much.

Toho's intention with the Millennium Series was that the movies would present new versions of Godzilla and the other monsters. Since the films weren't tied into continuity, they had more freedom to play with established characters.

Even so, Mothra's portrayal in GMK is actually pretty close to the essence of the original character in MOTHRA (1961). The original Mothra is a godlike, spiritual being that had a mission (to rescue the Shobijin) and didn't care who got in the way.... innocent people like everyone on the ocean liner or the baby on the dam were either killed or put in danger (the baby would have been killed if Bulldog didn't come to the rescue). In GMK, Mothra is a godlike, spiritual being that had a mission (to repel Godzilla) and didn't care who got in the way. At it's core, Mothra is the same in both films.

I voted for GODZILLA AND MOTHRA, although it was a decision FAR from unclouded with sentimentality! I have great memories of my trip to Japan to see it. It's a really tough call...

The original is my gold standard, I must have watched it a hundred times since first grade, and oddly enough the "No good, would be dog killing kids" killing Mothra in GMK came the closest to re-capturing the awe and unease I felt first watching MOTHRA as a wee little kid. Otani's excellent theme for her was also a big plus.

The Mothra Trilogy was not exactly the revision I was wanting to see as a then 20 something Mothra fan, but I am not immune to their charm! I like the first of them the best... the one with the proper Mothra! And her death scene and accompanying music ranks as a fave kaiju moment ever.

I fully realized what a lackluster director Tezuka is in TSOS! (after the suprisingly engaging GXMG) when even with a gorgeous Mothra imago prop and CGI, a pair of cute as a button Mothra babies, some lovely images, and direct links to the original MOTHRA, I was totally apathetic to the Mothras and the movie! If you can make me not care about Mothra... you are a bad bad director! :(

You do have a point, but as I remember, the Showa Mothra was not as weak, and wasn't defeated Godzilla in a few measley little minutes either.

You do have a point, but as I remember, the Showa Mothra was not as weak, and wasn't defeated Godzilla in a few measley little minutes either.

Director Shusuke Kaneko's original pitch for (what would become) GMK had Godzilla as an extremely powerful villain facing off with three smaller, weaker opponents... Varan, Angilas, and Baragon. Toho loved the story but, after poor box office sales for G2000 and MEGAGUIRUS, they insisted that Mothra and King Ghidorah replace the lesser-known Varan and Angilas.

Kaneko did what they asked while making as little changes as possible to the story he wanted to make and that Toho had approved. That meant Mothra and Ghidorah would not be the powerhouses they were in the Showa films.

Kaneko still made sure to keep most of Mothra's classic traits, and that's what I meant when I wrote "Mothra's portrayal in GMK is actually pretty close to the essence of the original character in MOTHRA (1961)." Please note, that I've used phrases like "pretty close" and "a nice alternate take"... nowhere did I say the portrayal is exactly the same.

I voted for "Rebirth of Mothra 1-3".
I like Mothra's design, it's very colourful.I think it's the best of all the designs.Mothra had much more to do with the humans and I like it when she transforms into a different Mothra, like AquaMothra. The Elias were good portrayed as well.
My second favorite portrayal of Mothra is from "Godzilla and Mothra".I love the scene where she transforms into the moth.I just love that "conversation" between Mothra and Battra and that Battra actually becomes good and helps saving the earth. :)

I voted for the Tokyo SOS Version. I loved that portrayal of her character especially since it was connected to the original version. I especially liked the fact that they didn't know if she would attack or fight Godzilla.

I definately agree with you. She has more emotion in her character, she's actually a character with feelings, and she cares about the world and humanity.

I think they made GMK Mothra too weak though. It is ironic how one of Godzilla's strongest adversaries turned into one of his weakest.

I liked the GFW mothra the most IMO. I mean sure she only got 2 minutes of screentime and she was not thanked, but I liked how she went up against a very powerful kaiju and takes her opponent down as she dies and she did it without using beams. I mean yeah she had longer fights in the showa, hesesi,ROM sersies, and milliem sersies but she at least kills her opponent in this one and still retains her origianal powers. They took the elment of her being strong from the ROM movies whale retaining her original chacater (in fighting anyways) in this one. Its also my favorite battle of her (as well as gigan).
