I think of Heisei Godzilla, which is also my favorite Goji-design.

Showa to me was most important. If there weren't a showa Godzilla, there weren't a godzilla at all!

Whenever I think of Godzilla, his general Millennium incarnation always comes to mind for a multitude of reasons. His thermonuclear breath is breathtaking and phenomenally powerful; his brutal destructive capabilities are far superior, his design is appropriately streamlined and anatomically more similar to a dinosaur than previous incarnations; and the Shinsei Gojira has an appearence and behaviour of unbridled aggressiveness and animal ferocity.
The Shinsei Gojira is a welcome deviation from the vacant lumbering juggernaught of the preceeding Heisei series, and of the outlandish heroic depiction within many of the later Showa series installments. Showa Gojira's humanoid appearence, bright outgoing personality and valiant heroics were unconvincing and faintly irritating during the early sixties and seventies, and the lacklustre special effects are an effective deterrent even for many of his good films.

Before you leap to any unfounded conclusions, I am certainly not criticising Godzilla's earlier incarnations: I have been a dedicated Godzilla fan for most of my life. I merely maintain, through reasoned arguments, that the Heisei and Showa Gojiras may be enjoyable, powerful and impressive, but are not awe-inspiring, ferocious and breathtaking in the same extent as the Shinsei Godzilla
The name Godzilla normally evokes this kaiju's design in GvMvM: Tokyo SOS. The incarnation from Godzilla 1985 is a close second.

Whenever I hear Godzilla, my mind automatically goes to the Heisei and Millennium incarnations.

The Heisei incarnation is what most people think of (as far as fans go), and I also do the same. However, the Millennium incarnation(s) come to mind as well. They are the most modern incarntions, and looked a bit more believeable than the others. The GMK Godzilla was terrifying to behold and the costume (although I have heard numerous complaints about a "beer belly") was very well done, and the G2K, GXM, GXMG, and GFW costumes were very good, too.

Personally, I think that the opinion is based on the movies. For example, the Heisei Godzilla design will be better accepted because, say, GvsKG was better accepted than GFW.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Showa Godzilla (I grew up on the Showa series), but I found the Heisei and Millennium incarnations to be better executed. Heisei was a juggernaut of power, and Millennium was just awesome.

I think age has allot to do with it as well. Most of the fans who prefer the Heisei or Millenium films are also usually very young, not all of course, but many. They either have no real knowledge/interest of the showa era, or they do and simply prefer the better effects and designs of the later eras. But if you've been a fan for decades like I have, it ain't about designs or effects. I have loved Godzilla since long before the the so-called better/superior Heisei and Millenium eras even existed.

Granted there are I am sure aged Goji fans who go way back that also prefer the newer films...but I have never met any myself in person.

    Meh, to each their own.
