    Nightmare 3: Godzilla vs. Gigans

Captain Dwight Salazar of the Allied Gunboat Lightning didn't like the way the war was turning out. The American and Allied cause had made startling progress in the early days of the war, when they had forced the surrender of a very large GDI army in Mexico. The Soviet Revolution in Mexico had been thoroughly crushed, and Venezuela had capitulated and joined the Allies. Backed by American airpower, Allied forces had landed in Soviet Cuba, and though the fighting was still going on, it looked like the Caribbean would soon be totally Blue. No Red, no Gold.

But that was about the end of the good news.

The United Nations Global Defense Initiative, GDI, mostly favored heavy weapons. This led to big, slow units, a perfect target for a captain of a small, lightly armored, lightly armed gunboat, and in the early part of the war, the Allied Navies had crippled or sunk several very large GDI Battlecruisers. However, these victories soon led GDI to develop their own Gunboats, though these ones were armed with French Exocet missiles. Luckily, these new GDI Gunboats were more heavily armored than the Allied Gunboats, so they were considerably slower. Still, this wouldn't help him if one of them got his boat in their sights. To counter the GDI Gunboats, and even more, the Soviet submarines, the Allied High Command had "suggested" that Allied shipyards build some more of the heavier and more powerful Destroyers.

However, the R&D department situation paled in comparison with developments on the ground. The Soviet Union had given Israel an ultimatum: "Join the Soviet Bloc or die." In the face of overwhelming numbers and firepower, Israel had relented, much to the disgust of the United States. Now, GDI didn't have to worry about any problems coming from the European/Asian/African landmass, and the Alliance had lost a great source of intel.

Also, the American CIA had spotted a lot of activity off the northern coast of New Guinea from a satellite. They had sent a submarine out to discover what it was, and the result had terrified Washington.

It scared Captain Salazar too. He was escorting Admiral Cortez's flagship, the Destroyer Isabella. It was not the only Destroyer in the fleet either. The Santa Maria and the Tiger were also present, leaving Captain Salazar frustrated at their slow pace. The briefing he had received said that GDI was building some sort of device at their destination, and was apparently planning to invade neutral Australia. It seemed that any nation that did not join GDI's war against the United States would be assumed to be an enemy by the international military.

    "Captain! A message from Isabella!"

Captain Salazar was snapped out of his thoughts by his radio operator, one of eight on duty crew members. "What's it say?" he asked.

"Sub detected. We're to drop depth charges in a zigzag starting with bearing 240 to keep him distracted while Isabella drops an ASROC on him."

Captain Salazar ordered, "Ready Depth Charges" as he turned the wheel until the Lightning was heading in the right direction, then ordered into his speaker, "Depth Charge, roll one, five-zero meters!"

"Roll one depth charge for five-zero meters, aye!" the reply came back, and as the Captain steered his ship to the starboard, he heard the distinctive sound of an underwater explosion. "Depth charge, roll one, one hundred meters!"

"Roll one depth charge, one hundred meters, aye!"

Again, the Lightning changed course and dropped another depth charge, but this time, there were two explosions. Admiral Cortez had launched the Anti-Submarine Rocket, and apparently nailed the submarine. Metal chunks had flown up with the explosion.

"Captain, a message from Admiral Cortez, He says to belay the Depth Charge Run and return to convoy formation."

Oh, yes. This was going to be a fun voyage. Maybe he'd get lucky and hit a mine.

    ***

The rest of the voyage was fairly uneventful. At noon, the four sailors who were off duty relieved the next four to go sleep. Captain Salazar considered going below to try to sleep, but an engagement was expected within an hour. The sailors who were going below would be cheated of some sleep, but such was war.

As they closed in on their target, the entire fleet under Admiral Cortez received one final message. "Maintain total radio silence until combat begins. Expect heavy rainfall."

Well, this is it, Captain Salazar decided. He could see the huge, dark rain clouds over the target area. That might lead to some difficulties, especially for their air support. Each of the three Destroyers carried two AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters, and one helicopter for anti-submarine work. The plan was for the Destroyers to sit back and pummel the target with missiles, while the Apaches and Gunboats went in to "mop up." The anti-submarine helicopters, and even the Destroyers themselves would protect the core of the fleet from Soviet submarines.

Suddenly, the Destroyers' missile racks lifted skyward and the missiles started firing, heading towards the GDI base.

That was the signal. It was time to go. Captain Salazar plowed full speed into the storm, and even though he knew he really wasn't supposed to, he had the siren sound on his boat. What better way to let sailors know that combat was coming than the "aWOOOOga," of a naval siren?

He could see the lightning beyond the drenched windshield, but not much else. The wipers couldn't keep up with the driving rain. As the boat hit a swell in the water, he called out, "Lieutenant Dias! You will steer the ship! I will go outside and call out orders to you. I have the conn!"

He strapped on a water-proof headset and more importantly, a vest with a clip on it. Holding on for dear life, he slowly climbed down the ladder from the bridge to the metal deck. Clipping himself onto the base of the Conning Tower, he tested his connection with Lieutenant Dias.

    "Lieutenant, you picking this up?"

    "Aye, sir. Loud and clear."

"Any new orders from the Admiral?"

    "No, sir. I-"

    "What's that?"

"I...ah, we just lost all communication and radar, sir. Looks like we're being jammed."

Captain Salazar was about to reply, when the sound of helicopter rotors filled the air. They were sending the Apaches into this? Admiral Cortez was taking a real chance. What was that over there?

"Lieutenant, full left rudder! Land coming up!"

Glancing back to the starboard, Captain Salazar could see two more Gunboats turning to miss the land. They jumped as their 8-inch deck guns pounded it. That reminded him. He was supposed to shoot.

"Deck gun, ninety degrees starboard. Locate targets and shoot!"

    "Locate targets and shoot, aye."

Salazar felt the ship shudder as the gun launched a shell towards the GDI defenses. Soon, return fire would come. Overhead, the shriek of the Destroyers' missiles filled the air. He saw a Soviet SAM take out an Apache. It was starting.

"Did you see where that SAM was?"

    "Aye, sir."

    "Take it out!"

The ship jumped again as the Gunboat's gun fired at the enemy SAM launcher. An explosion seemed to reward his gunners' work.

Over the top of another swell, Captain Salazar thought he saw another boat. As the Lightning came down, he was covered with water, but for a brief second, he had a clear view and a level sea.

"GDI Gunboat, bearing 340, range 150. Take him out before he takes us out."

Again, the Lightning jumped as the Deck Gun shot from the crest of a wave. Captain Salazar saw the GDI boat launch missiles, and was on the verge of warning his crew, when they roared over his boat. Instead of his boat, they slammed into the next boat off his starboard. The Lightning shot again, missing, but then an Apache came to his rescue, pumping two Hellfire missiles into the craft, only to get shot down by a shoulder-launched SAM fired a split second before the boat turned into a fireball.

"Go see if the pilots made it!" Salazar shouted into his headset. "If they did, we pull them up!"

It was a decision that saved his life.

As the Lightning shot off to save the pilots, a head popped up under the place it had been, and it was followed by another head. Captain Salazar could tell who they belonged to, and they weren't humans.

A long, bell-like roar ending with a honk filled the stormy air, as Godzilla parried Chimerus' lunge away. Chimerus' gigantic T.rex head had come up out of the water open mouthed at Godzilla's throat. Godzilla quickly followed up with his own lunge at Chimerus' throat. The mutant dinosaur's razor sharp teeth sliced the skin of Chimerus' neck, but once they hit the bone chain-mail under the skin, one of Godzilla's fangs shattered. Godzilla reared his head back in pain and rage as the pair sank beneath the waves again. When they surfaced again, they were closer to land, and Godzilla had a slash on his stomach area. Godzilla and Chimerus lunged at each other again, both biting down on the other's shoulder.

Finally, both had firm footing on land. Godzilla's back lit up, and the fire grew in his mouth, before lashing out at Chimerus, who deftly jumped out of the way, causing the plasma to melt through a gigantic warehouse with GDI's insignia on it.

Chimerus waved his Stegosaurus tail threateningly at the King of Monsters, the plates along his back, neck, and tail bloodred. Godzilla charged at Chimerus, bent over like a regular dinosaur, his left arm still hanging limply, though healing. He ducked under Chimerus' deadly tail swipe and came back up with a tail swipe of his own that shattered the vertebrae in Chimerus' neck and sent him into the ocean with a huge splash.

The wave caused by the giant chimera falling back into the ocean almost capsized the Lightning, but luckily Lieutenant Dias was able to keep the boat afloat, even with the bow totally submerged at times. The water had covered Captain Salazar for three long seconds. When he was once again out of the water, he rubbed his eyes clear, and gasped. The Lightning was stained red. He looked at himself, and saw that he was too. If he had been able to, he would have climbed back up the ladder and back into the Bridge, but the storm was intensifying, and he couldn't unhook himself without being washed away. Even now, the waves that constantly washed over the deck came up to his knees. For now, he'd have to stay. And watch.

Godzilla was almost a shadow in the driving rain, but he was still visible, especially as the lightning flashed in the sky. The gigantic mutant slowly walked towards the gigantic warehouse. It was larger than he was when he walked bent over like he was now, but it was shorter than he was if he stood up straight.

The size didn't matter to Godzilla. It was something new, and it smelled like food. That was all that mattered. He would see what was inside this thing.

Godzilla reached his hand through the steel walls and pulled down, collapsing the side of the building he was at. He grabbed the roof and tossed it aside as it was covering something very tall inside.

What was inside shocked Captain Salazar. He'd thought he'd seen everything with Godzilla and Chimerus fighting right in front of him, and with the Soviet and GDI condemnations of "America's secret biological weapons program," Chimerus, he'd never expected to see what he saw now.

It was huge. Easily eighty meters tall. It had spiked knees, and two great fingers on each hand. Lightning flashed, and with it came a momentary break in the rain. This let Captain Salazar see more of the thing. It had a toothed beak, with serrated mandibles attached. Its head was spiked. Lightning flashes revealed a buzz-saw inside its body from the chest down to the abdomen, and on either side of the buzz-saw, a silver circle with a gold silhouette of a swooping bird, and a red hammer and sickle, crossed. The insignias of the Global Defense Initiative and the Soviet Union. What Salazar had mistaken for fingers, were prongs, each a huge chain-saw. Suddenly, a light turned on in its head, emanating from what was apparently one large eye that wrapped around the front of its head. It issued an odd, otherworldly metallic warble that seemed to continue after it had ended. Godzilla responded with his honking bell like roar, then charged.

He'd caught the odd creature off guard, but at the same time, the creature caught him off guard. Godzilla had body slammed the creature and brought his claws up to rend the creature's body. The creature had rocked back at the body slam, but quickly regained its balance. What was surprising to Godzilla was that his claws slid right off. The creature was not alive at all, it was metal!

Godzilla spun around, slamming his massive tail into the robot's torso, sending it down to the ground with a shriek. Godzilla roared and rushed to stomp the thing to pieces, when he was knocked over by the thing's jets. It took to the air with its side wings outstretched like an airplane's. With a metallic chink, it launched two discs from its neck at Godzilla's rising form before slamming into the ground, once again on its feet. Godzilla yelped in pain as the spinning razor discs dug into his flesh, but it opened up a new opportunity for him.

Facing his opponent, Godzilla's back lit up, but instead of coming out his mouth, his nuclear energy exploded out through his chest wounds, ejecting chunks of meat and the lodged discs back at the thing that had shot him. It hit the robot and opened up its belly.

    ***

The robot's controller was inside the robot's head, looking out through the smaller viewport above the fake "eye." The robot's name was Gigan 1. He had planned to use his Gigan to subdue Australia, and force it to join GDI. Then the Allied Navy had shown up, and he'd planned to spring it on the Allies as soon as the battle had been fully joined. Then Godzilla and that American monster had shown up. Caine's orders on Godzilla were explicit, as were Premier Romanov's. If GDI could remove Godzilla, it would solidify GDI's support from the people of Soviet controlled Asia, and the Europeans. If Soviet military equipment was observed being defeated or retreating from Godzilla, It would encourage the enemies of the Soviet State. He was trying to fulfill the wishes of Caine and Romanov, but the battle was not going well. Who knew the mutant dinosaur could shoot through its wounds? Well, one more trick to try.

Gigan 1's saws started spinning. All three. If Godzilla came within Gigan's reach, he'd be ripped apart.

It seemed that Godzilla had other ideas.

His back lit up again, and this time, plasma came from Godzilla's mouth. Gigan jumped to the left, but the stream of plasma still melted some of Gigan 1's neck armor, exposing wires and servos.

Gigan 1 advanced towards Godzilla, with sparks flying out from its neck and abdomen. Its driver quickly became worried as warning lights flashed in the cockpit. He needed to get out of the area - fast. The giant vehicle was getting water where it wasn't supposed to go. Systems were failing, and hardware was malfunctioning. The Chainsaws on the right arm were grinding to a stop.

Godzilla saw Gigan 1 behaving oddly. He heard the strange sounds of malfunctioning machinery and translated them as cries of pain. He charged at the robot again, ignoring the pain the stomach saw caused as it ripped through him. The robot crashed to the ground as the inertial compensators failed. Godzilla stood up, his front gushing blood from the saw wound and charged up the air of his breath, stripping electrons from atoms to create plasma. The flame gathered in his mouth and shot out, melting the stomach saw, and frying more circuitry.

Gigan 1's pilot was getting desperate now. His Gigan could not get up. It was down in the mud, neither armed worked, all five saws had been disabled, and Godzilla was standing right over him, probably charging up another breath. In a last ditch attempt to survive, he hit his vehicle's rockets. It blew mud back and Gigan shot forward. With apparent effort, Gigan gained control of its flight and headed north.

Godzilla saw the thing heading north, and enraged that his quarry had gotten away, he went north too. Someone would feel his wrath. If he couldn't take out this strange machine that was rapidly retreating, then, he would take out his frustrations on the people who had caused his pain. He'd seen the insignias on his foe, and he'd seen one of them flying over the cities of the pathetic humans on the mainland. They would pay. Godzilla roared his displeasure into the stormy sky, his head pointed towards the clouds. Lightning struck his spines. The spines lit up, but no breath came. As Godzilla turned towards the mainland of Asia, Captain Salazar noticed that Godzilla's bleeding had stopped, and large tracts of his sliced body looked normal, as if nothing had happened. So it's true, he thought. Godzilla can't be killed.

    "Captain!" Lieutenant Dias sounded terrified.

    "What is it?"

"We've lost all power! We can't maneuver, and we can't contact anybody! The storm is driving us towards land!"

That was the last human voice Captain Salazar heard. Almost immediately after Lieutenant Dias finished speaking, the Lightning struck a reef, and the ship broke apart. Something hard struck his head, and he knew no more.

    ***

Captain Salazar woke to the sounds of war. Jets roared overhead, launching missiles, large ships off shore pounded enemies inland. Despite it all, it took the Captain nearly two full minutes to realize where he was and what was going on.

His first thought was that the Soviets were here, and they were coming to kill him. Then he noticed the aircraft flying overhead. Those weren't MiGs! They weren't Sukois or Yaks either!. Those helicopters, they weren't Hinds or Hokums, they were Commanches, the latest addition to the forces of...the United States.

The US was here! They would save him! He heard machine guns and tanks in the distance. He knew that he didn't want to go that way, but surely one of the American ships or helicopters...There! A drone! He tried to run for the drone, to let someone know where he was, but the clip on his vest was still connected to the remains of his boat. As disoriented as he was, he tried to run three more times before he remembered to unhook himself. By this time, the drone had noticed him and had relayed the information back to one of the ships, and a cas-evac helicopter from the Aircraft Carrier Olympia was sent to rescue the waving person on the beach.

Twenty minutes later, Captain Salazar was landing on the deck of the Olympia. Five minutes later, he was in a hospital bed with medical personnel treating him for shock and the knock he'd taken on his head. He was just starting to feel comfortable when the door opened and two men entered. One was a tall asian man, maybe over five feet tall. The other was about the same height and looked like a Mexican. Their height suggested they were American, as did their presence on an American ship. When they spoke, he knew they were.

"You are Captain Dwight Salazar?" the asian man asked.

    "I am."

"If you don't mind me asking" the other man began, "How did you end up with your name? Dwight is not a name that generally goes with Salazar."

"My mother was an American, and my father was from Panama."

"Juan, give him a break," the first man said. "That is not why we are here."

He turned back to Captain Salazar. "I am Won Park, and this is Juan Saiz. We heard that you saw Godzilla and Chimerus here."

The memory of the night before came flooding back, and the Captain's throat constricted in fear at the memory of Godzilla's eyes, those cold, white eyes that seemed to see everything, including your thoughts. He thought of Chimerus, the gigantic Frankenstein dinosaur the Americans had created. He'd seen the news reports. Chimerus seemed to have a preference for killing women and children. He ate people at random. He wasn't at all sure that he wanted Godzilla to lose to such a monster.

    "I did," he finally said.

"Can you tell us about what happened?" Park asked.

The Captain nodded. "I was sailing into the storm to attack a GDI base. Intel said that something big was going on, but that's all I knew. We had barely started engaging the GDI fleet, they seemed to be mainly in port weathering out the storm, then Godzilla showed up. He lifted his head out of the water and roared, then Chimerus came up and they started fighting. The fight moved onto land, then Godzilla knocked Chimerus back into the ocean. I think he was dead. Then, Godzilla tore open the huge warehouse thing GDI had here. There was some kind of monster inside it! It fought Godzilla, but ran away. Godzilla followed it, but I didn't see any more, because my boat broke up. Why are you people here?"

"We are here trying to find Chimerus."

"How are you planning to kill him?"

    "We're not. We..."

Captain Salazar exploded. "Why not?" he demanded.

    "Why should we?" Juan asked.

"Haven't you seen the news? That monster stomps on retirement homes, eats daycares, he..."

"Chimerus hasn't done any such thing!" Juan angrily declared. "You've been watching Caine's propaganda."

"But I saw him on the news!" Salazar protested.

"You saw a computer image attacking another computer image." Park said. "We have known him for his whole life, and Chimerus has never done any such thing. GDI keeps trying to make everyone think he does, just like they try to make Americans think that the government is bombing our own cities."

    "They can do that?"

"Very convincingly. Now, please tell us: you said that you thought Godzilla killed Chimerus. Can you tell us how?"

The door opened and Navy medical staff brought in another Allied sailor whose boat had broken up. Captain Salazar continued as they treated the man.

"Godzilla swung his tail and hit Chimerus in the neck. There was a really terrible crunch, and Chimerus fell back into the sea. He had been up to his knees in water to begin with."

"What do you think, Park? Do you think Chimerus is okay?"

"I do not know, Juan. We know that Chimerus has Godzilla's advanced regeneration, but spinal columns usually don't heal well."

"That's what I was thinking. Salazar, can you show us where Chimerus went down?"

    "I can."

"Corpsman, can this patient get up?"

A corpsman examined Salazar, taking his blood pressure, shining a light in his eyes to check for dilation, and finally checking his head.

"He can get up, but you need to wear this helmet, and drink this electrolyte solution. Make sure you keep him from falling down. He's a bit disoriented still, and if he takes another knock on that head of his, he may have another concussion. To tell you the truth, if I didn't know this was important, I wouldn't let him go." Then, the corpsman went to work on another patient.

They walked up to the bridge of the carrier and were let in by the Marine guards.

"Good morning Admiral, may we borrow the operational map quickly?"

"Yes, but hurry," the man said. He'd had the importance of these two civilians impressed upon him, but still didn't like it. Besides, he had a war to run. Or at least support.

"Can you show us the spot you attacked?"

"I can show you that, Mr. Park." Admiral Lewis said. "The GDI base in question was right here. If that's where your monster is, he'll be around this area."

Suddenly, the massive ship swayed as a massive head erupted from the water beside the Olympia.

With a deep roar of rage and a dragonish shriek, Chimerus' gigantic form left the water and walked back onto the shore, hoping to find his enemy still at the scene, but much to Chimerus' rage, Godzilla had already left. Chimerus could still smell Godzilla's scent, and could see footprints heading decidedly north. He was on the edge of charging after his enemy when his sharp hunter's eyes caught sight of the one thing he hated as much as Godzilla. It was painted on tanks the Americans were fighting. It was painted on the helicopters hunting American tanks. It was painted on the artillery, the jets, the ships, and all GDI forces that were trying to defend against the American attack. Chimerus' mind was instantly transported back to his first night alive.

His two humans had taken him to a home bristling with interesting nooks, crannies, and animals. Chimerus had been thrilled with his new home. He'd explored the huge building, chasing the native population of spiders and rats around. He'd saved his two humans from a strange reptile with no legs. It seemed to be a head attached to one big long tail. It was either guarding a nest or had just finished laying its eggs. Ordinarily, Chimerus wouldn't have thought much of the situation, but he could smell the poison, and the creature was threatening his humans. He'd killed the reptile. Afterwards, the humans had left, much to the disappointment of Chimerus, but his home was still an exciting place. He'd gone downstairs, not going back to the top floor until he heard people moving around. He'd gone upstairs excitedly to meet the humans, only to find two GDI Commandos, Spetznatz on loan from Premier Romanov of the Soviet Union. When they had seen the diminutive chimera, they had kicked, tossed, and generally abused Chimerus until he stopped moving. They had left him for dead, but Chimerus had Godzilla's regenerative abilities and any spark of life was enough for him to survive. Chimerus had survived and the swooping bird insignia had been burned into his mind as a supreme enemy.

Now, GDI would regret their assault on a baby dinosaur, Chimerus would make sure of that.

    ***

"Admiral!" Park shouted. "Chimerus is running towards the battle! Get your troops out of the area!"

The Admiral was already on the radio. "All US forces, Chimerus is heading your way! Execute Horror Show. Repeat, execute Horror Show."

Juan was a little apprehensive. "Admiral, are you planning of shooting Chimerus?"

The middle aged man sighed, irritated. "I have orders not to shoot him unless he directly and purposefully threatens American troops. Your little pet is safe."

"Yes," Park said. "I spoke with the President and impressed upon him the importance of not shooting at Chimerus. What I am more interested in is the plan you are executing. You expected Chimerus to show up during the battle?"

"Of course not," the Admiral said. "Did you wonder why we attacked here and why we attacked now? This Battle Group was originally tasked with the defense of Australia when GDI attacked, a defense, by the way, that was fully expected to fail. When Godzilla attacked the GDI base here, we thought we might have a chance if we struck while they were off balance and weakened. It seems that Godzilla decimated...well, destroyed is a better term, the GDI fleet north of the area, and took out a decent size of GDI's ground forces. When we decided to land, we knew there was a possibility that Godzilla would show up. Horror Show has US forces split up and try to leave the path of the monster clear."

    "That is wise," Park commented."

The humans watched a map that showed the situation. A lot of blue squares were moving to the sides and withdrawing while as many or more gold colored squares gave chase. One large, grey square moved at two hundred miles an hour towards the gap the blue squares left.

Sergeant O'Neal was an Infantryman. He'd grown up in Chicago, driving taxicabs for a couple of years before joining the Army. His life had been the Army for several years now. He lived to fight, and he fought to live. That was what he was used to, and he liked it that way. If he left the Army, he had no life, especially with the way the world was shaping up. He'd never expected to see a creature the size of a ship, and now that he was, he wished he wasn't.

Chimerus sprinted past the retreating Americans. He'd noticed the star on the American vehicles. They didn't have the swooping bird, so they were ignored. The tanks on the other side of the hill that had only now seen the giant dinosaur weren't so lucky. They all had the GDI insignia painted on them. As the people on the Bridge of the Aircraft Carrier Olympia watched the footage from Predator drones over the battle, they were shocked at the ferocity of Chimerus's attack. French LecLerc, German Leopard, and Soviet T-92 tanks were crushed by Chimerus's huge raptor feet or swallowed by the giant chimera's T.rex mouth. A retreating Artillery regiment was flattened in about a minute.

"Oh, my..." Juan's exclamation was cut short by retching. Park thought this was understandable when he saw the feed Juan had been watching. GDI infantrymen were literally melting before their eyes from contact with Chimerus' caustic saliva. It's one thing to see that happen to a rattlesnake who was trying to kill you. It's another thing altogether when you see it happen to a human being, even if they are your enemy. Park promptly joined Juan in upchucking onto the floor.

One of the Lieutenants swabbed the floor, and another sprayed Lysol in the air to cover up the smell, but most of the other people were fairly disgusted by the images they were seeing. To the people on the bridge of an Aircraft Carrier, war had become something like a video game. They pushed buttons and people died. But nothing like this. The sheer destructive power of the chimera was lost to them as they contemplated the fates of those the chimera felled. They imagined dissolving under a spray of saliva or being crushed in a tank.

"Admiral," a young Lieutenant said, totally breaking protocol. "I-I can't watch this anymore. I think I'm going to be sick."

    Several other voices agreed.

"I think we've seen enough too," the Admiral decreed. "The drone operators are to continue controlling the drones and monitoring the situation, but I want them to stay on for only fifteen minutes, and have thirty minutes off. I don't want any drone footage on the main screens unless it's necessary."

    The crew instantly complied.

Juan, Park, and Captain Salazar left the bridge. They didn't need to know any more, and they didn't want to see anything else if it became "necessary" to put Chimerus' rampage on the screens again. Nobody said much for the rest of the day, and what little sleep they got was filled with terrifying images of melting soldiers.

Gigan 1 crash landed in Soviet Vietnam. It would have been a large curiosity to the civilians of Konthum, but a large contingent of Soviet troops had cleared the area of civilians for five square kilometers around the area that the vehicle had been predicted to land. It was a moonless night, and very few Vietnamese noticed the gigantic robot, and those who had seen it wisely kept their mouths shut. Rule #1 for surviving in the Soviet Bloc was to not stand out. Rule #2 was to never ask questions.

"Sergei Andreiovich!" a voice called out, and though the words were friendly, Gigan 1's pilot knew that Brandon Caine was not happy. It was very good thing that Caine had no authority to punish Soviet soldiers, he decided.

"I need a word with you."

With a growing sense of dread, Gigan 1's pilot followed GDI's commander into a waiting limo, flanked by two GDI Commandos. A bit apprehensive, the pilot entered the limo.

To the pilot's great surprise, neither Commando entered after him. They both climbed into the front, but he noticed a ceiling camera over Caine's head that had a suspicious looking hole under the lens.

"I see you have spotted the ceiling gun, Sergei Andreiovich." Caine was smiling, but it wasn't a friendly smile. "I must tell you, Sergei Andreiovich, Premier Romanov and myself were most displeased with your...performance in New Guinea."

The pilot registered the continued use of the familiar version of his name. It was the way a friend would greet him, but the bald, gotee'd man in front of him had no friendship on his face or in his voice. He was being told that he was about to die.

Caine was still talking. "I was not aware that Premier Romanov was accustomed to having such incompetent soldiers operating his most expensive vehicles, Sergei Andreiovich."

By the time the limo reached the government building, Gigan 1's pilot was completely spooked. Caine and the two Commandos escorted him into the reinforced concrete building, and down three hundred feet in a claustrophobic elevator to the nuclear missile proof bunker. They turned down one of the dim hallways and into a bright room with a large table inside, where Premier Romanov, the leader of the Soviet Union sat drinking tea.

"Ah, Commander Stravinsky! I see that Mr. Caine was kind enough to affect your safe conduct to this bunker."

The Premier paused and Gigan's pilot knew he was expected to speak. "Ah, er, Da...Comrade Premier. GDI was, um, most hospitable." He was sweating now, in spite of the full powered air conditioner. The chances of his survival were minimal, he thought.

"Good." Romanov took another sip of tea. "Mmm. This tea is wonderful, Comrade Caine. Wherever did you get it?"

"I believe it was from India, Premier. You know, Great Britain once enforced a monopoly on tea going to the United States. It was tea from India."

"Ah, yes. Have our plans for the Conquest of England been made, Comrade Caine?"

"Of course, Premier. Gigan 2 will lead the way, flattening London while our forces land in Scotland and Ireland. Once that is complete, nothing hinders GDI and the Soviet Union from crushing either the USA or the ragtag Alliance at our leisure."

"And what of Gigan 1, Comrade?"

"The plan calls for Gigan 1 to assist in the invasion of Australia, and then the assault on either the Allies or the Americans, though, with the might and numbers in our armies, Gigan 1 isn't necessary."

There is was, he was expendable.

"That reminds me. Comrade Stravinsky, I bear sad news." His voice was friendly, but his eyes were cold. Once the People of the Soviet Union heard of your...defeat at the hands of Godzilla, they rose up and called for your head." Gigan's pilot paled. He knew what was coming. He'd heard stories.

"In an effort to protect your family from harm, we had to take them into Protective Custody until the uproar calms down. Once you have defeated Godzilla, Gigan 1 will be re-deployed in the conquest of Australia, and finally, the conquest of the United States. I think that the People will have calmed sufficiently to allow their release. Now, Comrade Caine, what of the Israelis? I hear they are not too happy with Soviet management of their pathetic land."

"That is correct, Premier. The Jews are complaining that you have not stopped Hezbollah and Hamas from blowing up their pizza parlors, busses and nightclubs."

"Remnants of their semi-Capitalist system. It is good that they should be destroyed," Romanov scoffed. "Do you think we should disarm the Arabs?"

"As long as they know who's boss, they should be all right. Your response to al-Quaida's attack on Moscow in 2001 taught them not to attack the Soviet Union, and anyway, I confess that I have little love of the Jewish people." Caine had a light in his eyes, an excitement. "Perhaps it is time for another Pogrom?"

"Learn your, place, Comrade Caine. You do not have the authority to take any action in Soviet territory, Jewish or not."

I may soon have more authority than you think, Caine thought, but he said, "Of course, Premier, I apologize.

"The time that we must deal with the Israelis will come later. Taking the Jews out will endear us to the Arabs so much that they will not give us any trouble for a thousand years! Now, Commander Stravinsky," he said, instantly changing the conversation's direction. "You are to wait until Godzilla reaches this place. You will fight Godzilla and defeat him. Repairs will be made to your Gigan and you will have one more chance. If you fail again, I don't think the entire Red Army will be able to keep the people away from your family."

"Comrade, Premier, I will not fail."

"You had better not fail, Commander. For your sake."

    "But..."

    "But what?"

"But why must I wait for Godzilla? Why not meet him as he steps ashore?"

"Are you questioning my orders, Sergei Andreiovich?"

"Of, of c-c-course not, Comrade Premier!" the pilot stammered. "I will follow your orders to the letter! But may I ask why we're allowing him to destroy Soviet territory?"

"For two reasons, Commander. First, they are not Russian. Therefore, they are more expendable. Secondly, Vietnam has a long history of nationalism. That must be crushed. The wretched people of this wretched land need to see that Moscow is their only hope! Mother Russia gives them their only chance for prosperity! That lesson must be driven home. Not only will you let Godzilla destroy Ho Chi Minh City, you will let him destroy fully three-quarters of Konthum before you save the city. These people must learn to trust in Mother Russia!"

Romanov waited, and Stravinsky knew he was being dismissed. He rose and left the room, terrified at what was going to happen.

Back in the room, Romanov looked at Caine. "Are the plans for the Politburo ready, Comrade Caine?"

"Of course, Premier. The "Americans" will be able to fire "their" Ion Cannon in about... five days. Though..."

"Though, what, Comrade? Are you questioning my orders too?"

I sure am, Caine thought. "Of course not, Premier."

"Good," Romanov said as he sipped his tea.

You're a wasteful moron, Caine thought, appalled at the waste of his second Ion Cannon. Somehow, Chimerus had shot the first beam back, and destroyed the first Ion Cannon satellite three years ago, and GDI had barely gotten this one in the sky. There had to be easier, less wasteful ways to eliminate the Politburo so that this buffoon could take control over the Soviet Union.

Just a little longer, Caine told himself. Just keep this moron happy for a little longer, and you can have control of the world's most powerful nation and army. Maybe then I can ditch GDI...

Nguyen Ky Quat was an old man. He'd lived in Saigon his whole life, and though the Communists had renamed his home city Ho Chi Minh City, he still called it Saigon. Unless there was a known Communist agent within earshot. He'd been lucky over the years. Most people were never heard from again if the Communists payed a visit to their house. He'd survived three such visits. He'd learned to say just the right things, and above all to keep his nose clean. He hated the Communists because of what they'd done to his son, but more than that, he loved staying alive, or at least not being tortured to death. He'd been forced to watch what the Communists had done to his son, and he couldn't bear to have that happen to himself, so he stayed away from absolutely anybody who had anything to do with counter-revolutionaries. He was a small farmer, and that was all he was. Just ask his wife.

It was a little after midnight, 12:04 to be specific, when Nguyen Ky Quat awoke from his sleep. What could it be? The bamboo of the wall shook a little, presumably in the wind. The old man turned over on his mat and tried to go back to sleep, but he couldn't. Slowly, a realization burned through the fog of his exhausted mind. The ground was shaking. Was this an earthquake? Suddenly, the old farmer was awake, and his body was drenched with adrenaline. The pain in his lower back disappeared for the first time in decades, and he woke his wife and sprinted outside.

The night was black. There were no stars or moon, but there didn't seem to be any clouds. Still, one couldn't be sure. Suddenly, a bell like honk of rage filled the air and a horizontal row of throwing stars glowed bright blue in the night. It wasn't an earthquake, it was Godzilla! All at once, the old man noticed that the earth shook in pulses, not continually. He saw an incredibly bright blue glow build, seemingly in the sky. The rough skin of Godzilla's back was visible by the glow of his spines, and indeed, the glow illuminated most of the saurian's body in the pitch black night. Suddenly, the light in the creature's mouth lashed out, granting the poor farmer his last view.

The bright blue streak of plasma did not strike the farmer, nor his house. It left him screaming in agony on the ground as the farmer's wife ran out of the bamboo hut to her husband. The bright light of superheated gas had burnt his retinas beyond repair. The farmer would never see again.

As the farmer's wife tried to console her writhing husband and drag him away from the monster, Godzilla noticed them. The King of Monsters decided at once that he would not kill the farmer. He would make the pathetic human wish he was dead. The man was blinded. He would not get the full effect of being trampled. Instead, Godzilla would take away everything the farmer had ever known. He advanced on the hut, letting his spines glow to ensure that the woman would see him coming, and letting loose a growl, preceded with just a hint of his roar in case she was too focused on her husband.

The farmer's wife was terrified. She'd heard Godzilla's growl, and she now saw his spines glowing. She had managed to drag her husband about twenty meters away from their hut, but he was still writhing in pain and too terrified to move, and he was slowing her down. He always had been a coward, she remembered, and ironically, that was why she had married him. He seemed less likely to be killed in the Army.

She dropped her husband, convincing herself that Godzilla would not notice him, then sprinted into the city.

Godzilla kept his eyes on the woman the whole time. While she was running down the road into the doomed city, Godzilla was deliberately smashing the hut, destroying it and irradiating it beyond use. Then, Godzilla fried the row of buildings in the farmer's wife's path. She abruptly changed direction as flames filled her path. Suddenly, there was nowhere to run. On three sides, everything was burning. By the light of the fires, she saw that the one remaining path led right to Godzilla.

Godzilla was deliberately leaving her a choice. The old woman could cower in fear as Godzilla slowly advanced on her, eventually smashing her beneath his gigantic three toed dinosaur feet, or she could try to escape through the fires.

She chose the latter, and her screams gratified Godzilla's malevolent heart. They stopped somewhat less than halfway through the wall of flame she ran through. The farmer's house and wife were gone. Now to destroy the city. He'd destroyed Tokyo in a night. Maybe he could destroy this city in...what? Five hours? He'd try, then he'd go after that metallic abomination.

Juan woke Park seemingly as soon as he'd gotten to sleep.

    "Ugh. What is it?"

"Admiral Turner wants you on the bridge, pronto. Don't know why yet."

Park yawned. Can I take a shower first?"

:Sorry. He wants us up there now. There will be coffee, but that's the best I can do for you."

Coffee? Real Coffee was rare in the days of the Godzilla Induced Global Cooling Famine, and world wars didn't tend to help the situation.

Realizing he'd gone to bed in his clothes, Park trudged up to the Bridge to hear whatever the Admiral had to say. Then, he'd go back to bed for a couple of centuries.

When they finally reached the command center of the ship, Admiral Turner exploded.

"Where have you two been!? It's been ten minutes since I sent for you!"

Park stifled a yawn. "Sorry, Admiral. It took me some time to wake up."

The Admiral looked like he was about to explode again, but changed his mind at the last moment. "Well, whatever. I've gotten some news, and I need your input. First off, Chimerus is gone. Where did he go?"

Park blinked. "Chimerus is gone? Again? Where did he go?"

Admiral Turner rolled his eyes. "That's what I'm asking you! Now, do you have any ideas where your little pet has gotten himself to?"

Juan thought for Park, who was working on a cup of coffee. "Well, after his fight with Godzilla, what, two years ago? he waited off the West Coast until he'd healed, then he disappeared, presumably in search of Godzilla. At least, that's where we found him. He could be going after Godzilla again, or he could be looking for food."

The Admiral didn't like that, but he had more pressing matters. "Well, never mind. We've intercepted Soviet transmissions that indicate that Godzilla is off the coast of Vietnam. They are preparing to fight him with something called "Gigan One." Any ideas on what that could be? What could have a chance of beating Godzilla. It seems to be expected to beat him."

"Uh...no idea, Admiral. Maybe some sort of really big gun?"

Turner looked like he was about to have a stroke. Finally, he spoke very slowly and very deliberately. "Very well. I have some news for you Mr. Saiz. Your Mammoths eat so much vegetation that your name has become a staple of daytime talk shows. You are becoming very popular back home."

"Juan balked at the sarcasm. "Well, shoot them and eat them. That's what they're for."

"You know that the EPA and PETA got your Mammoths declared an endangered species, Mr. Saiz. It's a felony to kill a Mammoth. And you're about as popular here as you are back home. Leave my Bridge. We'll have transport back home in about half an hour."

The two of them went looking for Captain Salazar. They found him in the infirmarary. He was visiting the other Allied Captain that had been found.

He started when they came in. "This is my friend, Vicente Porras. He captained another Gunboat, the Shining Light." The man was severely burned. A good chunk of his right face was black, and he had a large gash over his left eye. He was on a heavy dose of Morphine, and he was labeled as having an "Extremely Low" chance of survival.

"What happened?" Park asked. Juan turned away.

"A missile hit his boat. The damage wasn't enough sink the ship immediately, and it burned for a while until it washed ashore. I've gotten that much out of him." Salazar was close to tears.

"It is not so bad, Dwight," the dying man said. Park jumped at the unexpected happening. Juan left the room.

    "What do you mean, Vince?"

"You know what I mean, Dwight. Sure, it hurts now, but death is really nothing. Christ will take care of me whether I live or die."

"If God was real, how could he do something like this to you?" Dwight asked. "Are you still holding to God?"

"Oh, God did not do this to me, Dwight, and bad things happen to good people because we live in a fallen world. Jesus is coming back soon, and as it gets closer to his return, things will get worse."

"How can you believe in God, even now?" Dwight was almost screaming, his voice hoarse. He sounded desperate.

"You can't see the wind, Dwight, but you can see its effects. It is the same with God. I saw the changes in my father, and you saw the changes in me. God did that." The man seemed to relax, a smile on his face throughout it all. Park left quietly, leaving the Allied Captain to his grief.

The day finally came for the "Liberation" of England. Godzilla was rampaging in Soviet Vietnam, and had been doing so for a week. Repairs were being made to Gigan 1 against the final fight with Godzilla. Gigan 1 would either win or fall in the next few days, but either way, it was time for Caine's plan to shine. There would be no monsters interfering with this operation. Again, Godzilla was in Vietnam. He was accounted for. Chimerus was unaccounted for, but it was assumed that he was chasing Godzilla. Besides, he'd have no reason to come to England.

Caine had made some changes to the plan. The main change was that Gigan 2 would not destroy London. Instead, it would take out airbases and the like. Caine didn't want to kill any more people than necessary in this operation. Mainly because he now had well thought out plans for the future, and he didn't want his name to be associated with any more bloodshed than necessary. To that end, he'd had General Shepherd doing all of the high publicity stuff. Nothing was said about Caine anymore, and everything now talked about Mark Shepherd instead of Caine. Caine still called all the shots, but General Shepherd got the blame. Caine believed that people's generally short memories would basically clear his name. There were a few analytical ones who had resources to look things up, but GDI's hackers were already at work removing all computerized traces of Caine's involvement with any of GDI's unsavory activities. Soon, Caine would be the most powerful man on Earth, and he wouldn't have to deal with UN beauocracy. But first, he needed to take out England, or at least, weaken them.

However, GDI didn't need to have too easy of a fight.

"Jean-Luc, I need you to deliver these orders to Gigan 2. He's desperately needed in Vietnam to fight Godzilla."

"Sir? I thought the Gigan was going to lead the invasion of Britain."

This was part of what was wrong with GDI. Junior officers questioning orders. "I am aware of that, Jean-Luc. But, the situation has changed. Gigan 1 is damaged. Godzilla is flattening Vietnam. GDI needs to take out Godzilla. Both of the Gigans are needed to take out Godzilla. The invasion of England will not be hurt by this Gigan's absence. Besides, Chimerus may show up there, and the Gigans could kill him once Godzilla is defeated. Now, deliver the orders."

The Frenchman saluted and marched out of the room, finally convinced his superiors knew what they were doing.

Caine sighed. He needed to do something. GDI had too much red tape and oversight. GDI needed to get out from under the thumb of the UN. Caine needed to get out from under the UN's thumb. Originally, Caine thought he was going to have free reign. Then, the French wanted a say. Then the Brits wanted a say. The Americans had been kicked out of the UN, and were trying to use England as a proxy in that organization. That was unacceptable.

Now, the only question was whether to attack where England was strong, and give GDI the best chance of being repulsed at first, or attack where England was strong, and give the Brits the best chance for a counter attack? Hmm.

For Caine's final plans to work, GDI needed to be weakened, and hopefully embroiled in several occupations at once. Together with the Soviet Union, GDI had the power to conquer the world, but what if it was frittered away? Caine thought the British would have a good resistance, but not many people had guns. Should he bypass England and attack the US? No. Not yet. Get the Neutrals, then get the Americans.

Caine pondered, sitting in his Paris office. Of course, he would be leaving as soon as he informed the Secretary General of his decision. By its nature, GDI could not attack a nation without formally declaring war. It wasn't safe to be sitting within airstrike range of a country that you just ordered the invasion of.

London. That was it. Take London and execute the Queen, and GDI would have England's undying hatred.

Now, should he pull off a couple of divisions? Obviously, there would be no possibility of GDI's defeat. GDI had the power to take all of England. And there was still the question of GDI's British troops. Caine had taken the precaution of spreading all nationalities amongst GDI's armies, but surely there would be trouble.

Caine decided that he'd pull two divisions off of the initial invasion, then send them in when casualties started mounting. As he typed the orders into his laptop, he decided to add extra orders that any soldier not doing his duty to the max was to be shot on sight.

Within a matter of half an hour, Caine delivered his address to the UN. He defended his decision by playing video of British government officials meeting with American officials discussing how the UK could help the US war effort. It was, of course, crafted by GDI's elite team of computer engineers, all of whom were personally loyal to Caine. As the English diplomat insisted, the meeting never happened, but people believe what they see, especially if they want to. GDI's invasion of Great Britain was approved unanimously.

Immediately after that, Caine was on an airplane, heading to Africa to work on setting his new plans into motion.

    ***

GDI pilot Colonel Morelli was leading from the front. Her orders were to crater up any and all airfields at Heathrow Airport. The problem was that the Brits knew they were coming. Her squadron's Eurofighters were good, but they weren't stealth. She saw little reason to destroy the airfields, as England mainly used AV-8 Harrier Jumpjets, but orders were orders. Maybe the Americans were coming.

Orca Three and Four were the squadron's air to air specialists on this mission, and Five and Six were the Ground fire Suppression specialists. That left eight EF-2000s for cratering airfields.

The squadron streaked low over the city on full afterburner. After all, their plan depended on speed. Enemy units, especially a slow unit like a Harrier would hardly have any time to lock on and fire at them.

"Orca One to Orca Squadron, Objective coming up, ETA two minutes. Be ready."

"Orca One, I have targets at three o'clock!"

Colonel Morelli barely spared the Harriers a glance. They were on her radar too. This was a dangerous situation. They could conceivably be armed with medium-ranged missiles, but more than likely they were only armed with Sidewinders, a short-range heat seeker. If they killed them now, they may not have enough missiles to get them back out. If they didn't kill them, they might get hit, or they might meet the same Harriers later.

"Three and Four, do your stuff."

"Roger that," the pilots replied as they fired missiles.

The slow moving Harriers never stood a chance. The best they could do was to try to shoot before they died. Only one succeeded, causing heavily loaded Orca Nine to disobey orders and struggle for altitude, thus presenting himself as a wondrous target for the SAMs on the ground. Orca Nine died within seconds, taking his precious payload of bombs with him.

"Orca squadron, stay LOW!" she barked into her radio. "Look, choppers at eleven o'clock!"

Trails of smoke appeared as the choppers, which from their supersonic fighters looked stationary, and the Eurofighters exchanged fire. Orca two went down, but so did all four helicopters.

"See that? Helicopters don't last long against fighters. Remember that next time the chopper jocks flap their mouths in the bar. Target coming up."

The night sky lit up with tracers and spotlights over Heathrow airport. Each GDI plane split up to bomb their assigned airfield, but Morelli could tell at once that they didn't have enough planes, even though it was obvious that they weren't the first GDI squadron to bomb this airport.

"Three, this is Five, I've got a Tornado on my tail!"

"Four, this is Ten, Help Me!"

    "Orca Six is hit!"

Chatter filled Morelli's cockpit. On one level, she filtered it out and concentrated on her mission, on another level, she analyzed it all and kept track of the entire run her squadron made. Already, she was down to four planes, three as Orca Eleven crashed into the Control Tower. Her own warning buzzers went crazy as a radar guided missile was launched at her. She flicked the switch to arm her bombs and released them, pulling up on her stick until she was upside down, heading back towards mainland Europe.

Her chaff fooled the missile, but there is no fooling a bullet. AAA ground fire stitched her inverted aircraft, piercing the cockpit, and jamming the control stick, but missing Morelli herself. She analyzed the situation, as she struggled to gain some control over her craft. She decided that if nobody shot at her, she might make it back across the channel. Then, hopefully she could eject.

Five hours later, GDI's ground forces landed. Commandos had already landed at Buckingham Palace, and the site was secure, along with the entire Royal Family, awaiting only GDI television crews for their execution.

This made little difference to Lt. Commander Anton Slavik. Or rather, it would have made little difference to him if he'd known about it. Slavik only knew one thing: Obey Kane. Kane had ordered the assault, and Slavik would carry it out. He was devoted to Kane in a way that he was devoted to nothing else. It mattered not what the man ordered, it only mattered that he had ordered it.

The man cared nothing for GDI, only for its leader. He'd first met the man at a military academy, several years ago. Kane had taken a failing student and turned him into a great military mastermind. The hours a day Kane spent with Slavik had eventually turned Slavik into a totally devoted follower.

Now, GDI's commander in chief had entrusted his most devoted follower with the invasion of England. The world may call the man Brandon Caine, but to the Inside Brotherhood, the circle that saw the man as more God than man, he was Kane. good things befell the members of the Brotherhood, those who bore the Mark of that Brotherhood. The Mark of Kane.

That was why Anton Slavik was commanding this division. Well, one of the reasons. He was a good commander, and in exercises and simulations, he'd almost always won. His ability to pull off a victory out of less than even odds and his penchant for leading from the front won him the loyalty of his troops, which he lost no time in redirecting towards Kane.

Now, GDI's Third Shock Army was landing in England with Slavik at the head. GDI's landing craft were unloading in the docks. British Harriers and Tornados had caused some havoc, but GDI had the airpower of multiple nations over England. Even as Slavik's Command tank started rolling, a British airstrike came roaring in, and the first artillery was starting to fall. Slavik estimated ten minutes before a British counterattack hit.

"Artillery, counterbattery fire." GDI's rocket artillery launchers calculated the trajectory of the incoming projectiles, and launched return fire seconds before the British artillery fire landed. Slavik buttoned himself inside his tank as he heard the whistle of the shells, and looked at the monitors to see where they would land. He expected them to hit the tanks, or the artillery, or even the supplies that had been unloaded. Instead, they landed in the river. They sank several ships in the river and docks, effectively shutting the area off from further GDI landings. GDI had one artillery regiment, two armored divisions, and half of an infantry division ashore. Only about a third of the Third Shock Army's total strength. They'd have to hold until GDI's engineering corps could clear the ships out.

A shell glanced off the side of Slavik's Leclerc. "The British are here!" he warned his troops. "Fire on sight!"

He was pleased to see the British Challenger that had shot at him explode as the ammunition inside the tank cooked off after the tank was pierced by a round from his own tank's cannon. A lone crewman escaped from the dying tank to the "safety" of the outside. Slavik chuckled as the man was hit by a dart from one of GDI's snipers stationed on rooftops. Arming snipers with high powered dart guns had been Slavik's own idea. Each glass dart was loaded with highly concentrated Sulfuric Acid. Kane's enemies deserved to die, and they deserved to die as painfully as possible.

"Group Two, flank the British. Group One, stay here with me. We will hold this area until our comrades in the Engineering Corps clear the way for our reinforcements." Ordinarily, Slavik would be flanking the British, but Leclercs were wider than most other tanks, and it took a very skillful driver to maneuver down streets. "GDI forces on the ground need air recon."

    ***

Colonel Morelli was back in the air in another Eurofighter. She'd had to eject over the English Channel, but by a stroke of pure luck, she'd done so in sight of a GDI naval group, who had picked her up almost immediately. She'd been examined by a doctor, eaten a light meal, then given a new fighter and told to lead a whole Wing over London to protect a GDI force that had been partway landed and was under attack.

"Looks like they're throwing everything they've got in the area at you. They're coming at you from the North mostly. The river shields you from the west, but some are spreading out to the east. What are the High Priority targets?"

"Just blast everything you see. Wait, hold that. High Priority is anything that might run into our flanking maneuver. Don't let them see us. Get us some choppers if you can."

Was that an insult? Morelli wasn't sure, but it almost sounded like this punk commander was trying to tell her that her airplanes were not enough. Logically, she knew that it was true, but as a fighter pilot, she generally looked down her nose at the chopper boys. Never mind, she told herself. Just do your job.

"Sir! I've got GDI Airmoble approaching. Where do you want them to set up?"

"Are they Light Infantry or Anti-Tank?"

    "Sir, I don't think GDI..."

Slavik exploded. "Just ask the stupid question, or I'll shoot you and do it myself!"

The terrified radio operator asked the question, and turned back to Slavik. "Sir, they report that they have three anti-tank teams, four snipers, one Commando, and one hundred Light Infantrymen."

"A Commando?" Slavik's eyes gleamed. "Right. Get the missile teams into those buildings, ready to pick off British tanks as soon as they show their ugly hulls. I want the Light Infantry here to protect our tanks from their infantry. Use them to fill any holes in the ranks of the infantry we already have. Put the snipers on the rooftops of different buildings than what our anti-tank teams are in, and just turn the Commando loose. I'm expecting another attack soon." After the radio operator had relayed the orders, Slavik told him, "And find out how long it'll take to get those ships removed."

In an airplane clear on the other side of the world, Park was having trouble sleeping. He hadn't slept more than a couple of hours total, and now, as the sun began to rise, he finally gave up. He reached up to hit the Flight Attendant button.

"You too?" he heard Juan ask.

    "Yes. Why are you awake?"

The Navy Flight Attendant appeared. She looked tired and worried, but she would do her job. "Can I help you, sir?"

"Do you have anything with caffeine?"

"We have some caffeine tablets, sir."

"I need one too, ma'am," Juan called out.

    "I'll be back," she said.

"So, why are you awake?" Park re-asked.

"I imagine for the same reason you are. Did you see that guy on the ship?"

"Ugh. Yes. It was horrible." The burned Captain’s face flashed up in his mind's eye, but the Flight Attendant showed back up with water and caffeine, refocusing Park's attention to the present.

He noticed that she still looked troubled. "Is anything wrong?"

That seemed to snap her back into reality. "Oh, no. We just got word that England is under attack. I'm worried for my brother. He's over there on some sort of diplomatic mission or something. He wouldn't talk about it."

"Well, I am sorry to hear that your brother is caught up in that, and I hope that he gets out safely."

"Well, I probably shouldn't have told you that, but..." her voice trailed off, and she seemed to sink into sad thoughts.

Juan spoke up. "Do you know who's attacking them?"

The Flight Attendant sighed. "No," she said. "Reports are still sketchy. I've heard that the Royal family has been executed, and I've heard that they're all safe. I've heard that the Soviets have nuked London, and I've heard that they're invading Scotland, but I've also heard that GDI is invading, and that the Brits are pushing them back. I don't know what to think."

    "Well," Park began.

"Um, I need to go. If I get caught here talking instead of doing my job, I'll get in trouble."

With that, she left, walking to the rear of the plane, just in time, as the aircraft hit turbulence and the pilot turned on the Fasten Seatbelt sign.

Juan said something, but Park didn't hear it. He was lost in his thoughts.

    "Park!"

    "Eh? What?"

Juan rolled his eyes. "I said, you do realize that we're going to lose this war, don't you?"

    "What do you mean?"

"Look. The Soviets own Asia, and can pull from all of Asia's people and resources. They own the Middle East. Northern Africa is the same story. Southern Africa and Continental Europe are constantly giving more and more of their resources to GDI. I say that in another five years or so, those countries will cease to exist, and be replaced with GDI. England is under attack, either by GDI or the Soviets. We saw that GDI had a staging area in New Guinea, and taking into consideration what we just found out, I'd say that they were about to attack Australia. Canada won't attack us right now, because they know that we'd kick their tails and send them back north with their tails in between their legs. They're not stupid. They know they can't beat us on their own, but they don't want to join us, because they know that our side can't win. Our only friends are the Allies, where for all intents and purposes, the South American nations have disappeared. The Allies don't have the power to stand up to GDI, much less the Soviets."

"But we have the best military in the world, Juan," Park protested.

"No. We have the most technological army in the world, though GDI is fairly close. That will help us last for a while. We have what is probably the best trained military in the world. Once the invasion lands, we'll also have home field advantage, but our enemies are just too large. They have too much stuff, and even our technological advantage isn't as large as you might think."

    "What are you saying?"

Juan sighed, shrugged, and leaned back in his seat. "I don't know," he said. "Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth going on. You and me, we're dead you know. Caine'll make sure we die. I suppose there'll be a Resistance of some sort and we could join that, but if it's too strong in one particular area, the Soviets will just nuke us. You know, it may even dissolve into a nuclear war anyway. If we're about to get wiped out by multiple million man armies, the President might just hit the button. If we launch, they'll launch. This whole sorry world will go to Hell in a handbasket."

    "Eh? What was that?"

"What was what?" Juan was confused.

"That last part. What did you say?"

"I said the world was going to Hell in a handbasket. Why?"

"I have heard that phrase before. Where was it?"

"Oh, it's not that uncommon a phrase. You probably heard George say that."

"Yes. You are right. He always used to say that the world would 'go to Hell in a handbasket.' Funny."

    "Why is that funny, Park?"

"Oh, I have no idea. It just strikes me a funny all of a sudden."

"Well, it very well might do that. Well, Godzilla will be happy. With all the radiation and all."

"Yes," Park agreed, as his mood instantly darkened. "He will."

The moment had arrived. Godzilla was in the city of Konthum in Soviet controlled Vietnam. The only problem was that for once in his malevolent, evil life, the mutant dinosaur wasn't destroying the city. He wasn't vaporizing buildings, nor going out of his way to smash people. For the pilot of the Gigan 1, this presented a very large problem. His orders, directly from Premier Romanov explicitly stated that he was to let Godzilla destroy three-quarters of the city before stepping in.

But Godzilla wasn't destroying the city.

Yes, the city was taking damage. That could hardly be avoided when Godzilla walked through a city. He was leaving a few fires in his path, and the ground he walked on would surely not be usable for a few years, but he was not really trying to destroy the city. He was making a beeline path for the Gigan 1!

The Gigan was parked about two kilometers outside the city limits, in the countryside so it would hopefully go unnoticed by the locals.

What could he do? Godzilla was not going to destroy the city. Gigan 1 could move in now, or sit back, waiting to be attacked. Either move could be fatal, if not from Godzilla, then by the KGB. If the gigantic vehicle had been refueled, he could fly around, leading Godzilla back into the city, but it hadn't been. The Soviet Engineers hadn't even repaired all the damage from the first fight! Wires on the gigantic mech's neck were still exposed.

Maybe he shouldn't worry too much about Romanov. Maybe he should just attack Godzilla and get done with it.

With a warbling metallic shriek, Gigan 1 used the last of its fuel flying towards Godzilla. Maybe he could score a flyby chainsaw hit. Maybe, just maybe he could decapitate the thing.

As Godzilla came in sight, the Gigan's chainsaws roared to life, but then the left arm shorted out, hanging limply.

This was not going to be a victory for Gigan 1.

As the Gigan 1 sped towards Godzilla, it's pilot saw Godzilla's spines start glowing as the mutant stood up to his full height. If he jinked his Gigan, he wouldn't have enough fuel left for another try. This was it.

Godzilla let his fiery breath loose, vaporizing a hole through the mech's midsection. No time to look at damage reports, the pilot thought, as he flew by Godzilla with his remaining chainsaw hand outstretched.

    He'd missed!

The Gigan 1 had overshot Godzilla! Or Godzilla had ducked, reverting to his more saurian posture. The pilot had no idea. He just knew that Gigan 1 was face down on the ground, and he needed to get back up. Now!

Using its still functional right arm as a crutch, Gigan 1 slowly stood up, and began to turn around, only to get tackled back down by Godzilla.

One thought went through the pilot's mind. Chainsaw. Godzilla was on Gigan's belly, right where the Gigan had a buzz-saw! The pilot reached over and hit the switch.

Nothing happened. When Godzilla had shot Gigan 1 in the air, it had vaporized the spinning saw belt.

The Gigan had to act, NOW! Godzilla was finding that his claws couldn't shred the vehicle's massively armored metal skin, and he would soon resort to his plasma breath.

Without hesitating, Gigan 1's two pronged chain-saw hand flew at Godzilla's neck, actually cutting its way through to where Godzilla's neck was between the gigantic prongs! He could decapitate Godzilla!

But no. Godzilla's Nuclear Pulse shattered the two pronged saw, but then collapsed backwards. It seemed that either Gigan 1's saw or Godzilla's own Nuclear Pulse had ripped Godzilla's Jugular vein, cutting off the saurian's blood supply to the brain.

Relieved beyond belief, the pilot of Gigan 1 sighed and wiped the sweat off his brow before causing his mech to stand up. It wasn't easy to get the vehicle to stand on its feet when one arm hung limply, and the other one had been demolished, but he managed.

The pilot clicked on his radio and called his status to the local Red Army officials. Now that the battle was over, he could break radio silence.

"Red Army Command, this is the Gigan 1. Godzilla has been defeated. Repeat: Godzilla has been defeated. Gigan 1 status is...Right arm destroyed, left arm not responding. Buzz-saw destroyed. Wings non-functional..."

He was cut off by a Commissar. "Is Godzilla dead?"

    "Da. I saw him die."

"You had better make sure. Contact us when you have his head on a platter."

Gigan 1's pilot armed the spinning razor discs, but noted that the aiming computer was down. He'd have to eyeball it. He set his Gigan up at an angle that looked good and fired two of the discs. They hit Godzilla's shoulder and dug in deep, but that wasn't what he'd been aiming for.

He was just setting up for another shot when he saw Godzilla's spines glow. Godzilla's Nuclear Pulse shot the razor disc back at Gigan, slicing off its remaining arm. Godzilla stood up, his neck almost completely healed. He looked at Gigan 1 with his dead-white eyes, and the human inside the gigantic vehicle knew that he would die.

In the three seconds that it took for the light to build in Godzilla's mouth, the mind of the little human raced. He had failed. He was about to die. His wife and kids would die. Then what? Was the Party right? Was there truly nothing on the other side? Was there truly no God?

Looking at the face around the rapidly growing light was like looking into the face of the devils that the Party assured him did not exist. In the final millisecond before he was completely atomized, Sergei Alexandrov, the son of Andrei Alexandrov decided that there was at least a Hell, and that he was going there.

    ***

"Target in sight, sir. Your orders?"

    "Does the other vessel remain?"

    "Nyet. It has been destroyed."

"Commence aerial attacks. Weaken the target before engaging."

    "Da."

Observing the battle from afar, the pilot of the Gigan 2 had seen the destruction of the other Gigan. Godzilla had vaporized it from the head to the chest, and was prying it apart, presumably looking for the mech's large nuclear reactor.

He felt little sympathy for the unfortunate pilot. He didn't even know the person's name. He did know that the scum had failed Mother Russia, the Rodina. He knew that he had caused the Soviet Union to lose face in front of their subjects, and he had wasted two and a half years of effort by the Soviet Proletariat in building such a wondrous machine.

He would not fail as the other pilot had.

The Gigan 2 had the same basic design as the Gigan 1, but there were some substantial differences. The most notable was that Gigan 2 did not have two pronged chainsaw hands. Instead, it had scythes. Each hand scythe had two points, one at the tip, and one that jutted out from the base. In between, they were sharpened, honed to a fine edge, perfect for cleaving flesh. The horns on its head were not as exaggerated as the Gigan 1's, but infinitely more useful. Computer simulations run on GDI's supercomputers showed that the ones on Gigan 1 were too long to be useful. The mech's mandibles were different too. They were not as long as the Gigan 1's, nor were they serrated. They could be easily used for stabbing Godzilla or Chimerus if the opportunity to bite one of them presented itself. Most importantly was the changes made to the projectile weapons systems. Instead of having razor discs, Gigan 2 had a laser in its forehead. Unfortunately, this presented a problem. The perfect placement for the laser was the small porthole that the pilot would ordinarily look through. So, the control room was moved downwards behind the decoy visor "eye." It was more obvious, but the increased firepower made it worth it. Also, Each arm had two grappling hooks that could be fired to wrap around either Godzilla or Chimerus to drag them kicking and screaming towards the buzzsaw the Gigan had in its belly.

Reaching forward to the console, the pilot brought up the targeting computer. No good. He wanted a good shot. One that would give him an advantage. It was not good to anger Godzilla without really hurting him.

He activated the Gigan 2's war cry. Godzilla heard the metallic shriek and looked up.

    Perfect.

The laser just above the Gigan's visor activated, lancing out to pulverize Godzilla's eye. Godzilla shrieked in rage and pain.

His enemy blind in one eye, the pilot of Gigan 2 decided to land and press his advantage. Unfortunately, the laser created a tremendous amount of heat, and he'd have to wait to use it again.

As the gigantic mech slammed down to the ground, Godzilla turned to face his tormenter. He could feel the plasma leaking from his eye socket. The very thing that gave his eyes their fearsome glow might make it impossible to regenerate the eye. Godzilla decided that the strange metallic beast would die, just as its brother had. To charge up his breath was pure agony on Godzilla, but he would make this creature pay.

The Russian pilot saw the fire building up in Godzilla's mouth, and took to the skies again, in one gigantic rocket propelled bound that caused Godzilla's breath to miss its mark and served to place the Gigan within striking range. It sank its right scythe into Godzilla's flank, trying to sever the mutant dinosaur's backbone. The mech held it's left arm up to block Godzilla's expected reaction coming from its head.

    It was a miscalculation.

Godzilla did spin around, but he spun to the right, knocking the Gigan over with his massive tail, and dislodging the scythe. As Godzilla brought his good eye to bear on the grounded vehicle, he charged another agonizing plasma breath and slammed his foot down on the Gigan's chest.

Then, the mech lit its rockets and blasted out from underneath Godzilla, sending him sprawling onto the ground, his head knocking down a water tower that cracked open over his face. The water leaked into Godzilla's eye, agonizing beyond comprehension, but cooling off the plasma and giving the eye precious time to regenerate to the point where it could become fireproof.

As the pilot landed his craft again, he saw the change at once.

    Godzilla had a pupil.

Godzilla hadn't had a pupil in several decades.

No time to admire the scenery. The pilot noticed that the laser was finally cool enough to use. He fired the laser, missing Godzilla's eye, but scoring a painful blow to the scalp. Not good enough. A couple of seconds later, and Godzilla had healed the wound.

Godzilla rushed at his adversary, planning to rend the creature before him. If his claws could not rip its hard shell, then he would pound it until it stopped moving. He batted away the Gigan's scythes, bloodying his hands before he grabbed the vehicle's shoulder and throat. Pushing with all his might, Godzilla was slowly decapitating the mech. The pilot panicked at this realization and used Gigan 2's rockets to blast up and back from Godzilla, then dodging left to avoid Godzilla's breath.

Gigan 2 took to the skies once more and turned on the fearsome saw. Godzilla once again stood to his full height and charged his breath.

At the last moment, Gigan 2 jinked right, but Godzilla expected the move, catching the mech on the side, and vaporizing part of the shielding for the nuclear reactor. As the Gigan 2 crashed into the ground and struggled to its feet, Godzilla eyed it hungrily, remembering what had first brought him into conflict with the Gigans.

The pilot heard Godzilla's honking bell-roar and correctly decided it meant trouble for him. He fired his grappling cables to immobilize Godzilla.

Godzilla found himself wrapped with metal cables attached to hooks that dug into his skin. His arms were pinned to his sides, and he couldn't move them. His teeth could not slice through the cables, and he felt a tug on them. Looking up, he saw his bizarre enemy wrapping the cables around his scythes, drawing him towards the spinning saw in the creature's metallic belly. Godzilla growled and dug his feet into the rubble covered concrete ground.

The pilot saw Godzilla's move and activated the spike in his vehicles ankles. With two large thuds, Gigan 2's spikes drove deep into the ground, essentially locking the giant vehicle in one place as it put more power into dragging Godzilla towards its deadly saw.

Godzilla felt the change at once. He was astonished that he was actually being pulled against his will. As the Gigan drew him towards the saw, Godzilla charged up his breath. As his spines instantly glowed bright with nuclear fire, the metal cables snapped and Godzilla was free. Gigan 2 activated his jets and flew straight up to avoid the plasma that would head its way.

Godzilla expected the move and his breath caught the flying vehicle's back, destroying the left stabilizing wing and jet, causing the Gigan to crash down onto the runway and control tower at the Soviet Air Force base, ruining the tarmac and flattening the control tower.

When it didn't move, Godzilla rushed at his downed enemy, planning to eat the nuclear reactor that ran the Gigan 2. When he reached the mech, the thing gave its metallic shriek and sank its left scythe into Godzilla's gut while it used its right one to try to force itself up. Godzilla drew back, spinning around and whacking the Gigan's chest with his powerful tail, slamming it back to the tarmac.

The impact cracked the shielding on the Gigan 2's nuclear power plant, irradiating the pilot, killing him instantly. The Gigan 2 just lay there, not moving, but Godzilla wasn't willing to take another chance. His entrails still hadn't healed completely, and some of them were still hanging out of the incision. Godzilla charged up his breath and annihilated his enemy's beaked head, then pulled its metallic armor away and began feasting on the nuclear core of his enemy.

Juan and Park landed at the remains of LAX and were taken directly to a military convoy that had been waiting them. They had seen that the city was burning from the air and assumed that GDI had been bombing in their absence, something that had not happened for six months, apparently while they planned their invasions of Australia and Britain.

Juan turned to one of the soldiers taking them to an awaiting Humm-Vee. “Hey, why did they land us here? I thought we were being taken to the Rockies.”

“Chimerus landed here a couple of hours ago, and we’re not sure why. He seems to be heading towards your old lab. The whole town was apparently destroyed by an earthquake while you were off the coast of Australia. We’re not sure why he’s going there, but we thought we’d go by land. He’s averaging seventy five miles an hour, so we shouldn’t have any problems keeping up with him.”

“You said that the town was destroyed?” Park asked, aghast. “There are no fault lines that go by that town.”

“Well, that’s what it looked like, though once humanitarian teams arrived, they started reporting signs of radiation poisoning amongst survivors. I assume that the college had some nuclear materials that had been released due to the quake.”

GDI had finally gotten the ships dislodged, and Colonel Morelli’s air force had devastated both the British RAF, and their artillery, so that particular logistical nightmare seemed to be over, but Slavik needed reinforcements faster than they could come in.

The Commando had done well, sneaking behind enemy lines, massacring British infantry, and destroying the fuel and ammo depots, but he had apparently run into a group of SAS troops and been overwhelmed. At least, that was what Slavik assumed had happened. He couldn’t fathom that anybody else could take down the Commando.

He had his beachhead in London, and reinforcements were coming in. He had done his job, and as soon as this British counter assault was broken, Slavik knew he would lead GDI forces all the way to the very north of the island. Nothing could stand in his way. He just wished that Kane would let him have more forces.

“Comrade Caine, the Ion Cannon is ready.”

“Very well, Yuri. Give the command.”

It was midnight in Moscow. The Moon shone brightly over the Kremlin. Very few people saw the event first hand, as Moscow had a curfew that was very strictly enforced by the KGB.

However, there were enough “non-KGB” eyes that were watching, and more than a few cameras caught the event.

Those who had a telescope trained at the moon would have noticed a very small dark shape that moved in front of the Moon’s face. It would have looked like a dot.

This dot rapidly gathered a blue glow that was hardly visible with the Moon glowing behind it, but this blue glow did not stay in front of the Moon. It seemed to reach down from the moon towards the earth. It crashed into the Kremlin, pulverizing it and digging a crater where the ancient fortress had stood.

The next day, the headlines declared that the Americans had used a new space based laser to try to kill the government of the Soviet Union and explained that Premier Romanov had been on his way to a planning session with the Politburo at the Kremlin, but had been delayed due to weather.

Premier Romanov was now the total leader of the Soviet Union.

    “Avi, is everything ready?”

    “Yes, Minister.”

The former members of the government of the State of Israel were meeting. Joining the Soviet Bloc had kept them alive, but it was the only positive. Hamas and Hezbollah were allowed to blow Israelis up at will, and the Soviets were doing nothing to curb the violence. The Premier had made it clear that no attacks on the Palestinians would be tolerated, as they were Soviet citizens, and they were told that if they had any grievances against them, they were to take the matter to the Soviet governor for their area.

In the short amount of time that Israel had been a part of the Soviet Bloc, there had been a total of three hundred terrorist attacks in Israel, all of which had been taken to the Soviets, who had done nothing.

“Give them one more chance to remedy the situation. If they still do nothing, we will act. If we are going to die anyway, we will at least take our enemies with us.”

“Yes, Minister. I’ll see to it at once.”

“After you talk to the Soviets, call the Americans. We’ll need all the help we can get, I’m sure.”

    “Consider it done.”

The world was about to explode, the old Prime Minister thought. He had no idea how right he was.
