    The Children of Godzilla

    Prologue

-From the journal of Dr. Ryudo Minami:

It is my sincere belief that one of the greatest, if not the greatest, assets of the human race is our almost completely unique ability to reason. No other creature on the planet has such great a power of logic and deduction as we do. Granted, the ability to reason is found elsewhere in the animal kingdom, in apes and whales for instance, but not to such a great extent as in the human animal. Among apes and whales you will find no Socrates, no Galileo, no Newton, no Einstein. The ability to reason has given feeble man something no other animal of this world could ever dream of. It has enabled us to conquer disease; made it possible for a person in Tokyo to communicate with someone here in New York in a matter of seconds; enabled us to go to the bottom of the sea and reach the highest heights of heaven; and it has given us the ability to create life, and to destroy it. One could say that our ability to reason, this great power we have come to call science, has given us the keys to the secrets of God. But knowing the secrets of God, is no license to play God.

You may find no Einstein in the animal world, but you will find no Hitler either. Man is the only animal that kills without purpose. You will find no other creature on the planet that will kill out of hate, or worse yet, for the simple enjoyment of killing. Human beings are the only creature that could sleep at night knowing that we have the power to destroy the world at their finger tips; we are the only animal that obsesses over the color of one's skin, the choice of one's religion, one's culture or language, one's nation of origin, one's political identity, or even something so stupid as what consenting adults choose to do in their own bedrooms. Our ability to reason has unlocked miracles, yet as the planet warms, as poison fills our air and water, as waste builds and rain turns to acid, we do nothing. Rather than using our ability to solve problems, we choose to ignore them. Rather than using our ability to reason, we choose to kill each other. Can we honestly say that we deserve to know the secrets of God? Much less to play God?

As I write this, new miracles are being discovered. We are steadily uncovering the mysteries of the universe and of our own planet. We are advancing new medicine that may one-day free humanity of the worst diseases we have ever known. We are applying new solutions to old problems in order to make our world a better place in which to live. But new nightmares are slithering out of the woodwork. We are building machines that, increasingly, possess intelligence that rivals our own. We are creating new species of animals and plants without regard to the damage they might do. Some are beginning to dream of human/animal hybrids-such as mice with human brain cells. And all the while we ravage the planet and turn our backs on the least of us, all of which we will in time pay for, or as I would argue, be judged for.

If mankind is to survive in this new millennium, we must learn a simple lesson. We are not God; we should not pretend to be Him. I think that was the lesson Godzilla was meant to teach us. Thankfully, that monster, a frightful creation of man’s arrogance and destructive impulses I might add, appears to have left us for good. I can only pray that it is the truth, as twice before we were lead to believe so only to find that the nightmare still lived on.

It is my hope, my prayer even, that mankind will learn the lesson of Godzilla so that we must never face another of his kind.

    ***

At a tiny base on the northern most shore of Hokkaido a soldier stood watch. In his mind, there was no reason as to why he did so. Japan was at peace now, having seen its most dreadful enemy, Godzilla, destroyed in the volcanic core of Mt. Fuji over a year ago. With him gone, the nation had been reborn, seeing returning prosperity and bold leadership with Kyoko Nagamine as Prime Minister. Yet, despite the apparent peace, the Prime Minister maintained that Japan would be eternally vigilant, having developed a new appreciation of their newfound security and determined to insure that future generations might see it preserved. But Nagamine walked a perilous tight rope, as she had often done before. Already the opposition was beginning to howl "warmonger" and her own party was beginning to cave, but the people backed her, remembering her leadership in the face of disaster and eternally grateful for the bold action that sent Godzilla to his grave.

As the soldier’s thoughts drifted away from politics and back to his duty his gaze moved out over the water, taking in the calm of the night and the peaceful slapping of the waves against the shore. Then, as he watched, the sea began to churn and a horrific entity emerged from the deep.

The thing gave a sinister hiss at it emerged from deep, black water and made its way to the shore. It was an enormous monster, one so terrible it seemed to have come from Hell itself. Its face was rat like and covered in black fur that turned to a wild mane on the creature's neck and shoulders. Yellow saliva dripped from its jaws as they opened, revealing enormous, rodent-like incisors and double rows of fangs. Its legs and body were covered in dull blue scales, with five massive gills on both of its sides clearly visible. Its tail was long, pink, and devoid of both hair and scales, making the creature resemble even more like an enormous, frightful rat. Along the creatures back ran three rows of jagged dorsal plates, eerily similar to those worn by the great Godzilla. The creature stared through the night with glowing red eyes that seemed completely evil, devoid of any thought or feeling other than animalistic hunger and rampant greed.

The demon beast hissed again as the sirens of the base wailed and bright lights cut across the night sky. The rat-thing rushed forward as tiny tanks emerged and fired their cannons hopelessly, the puny shells bouncing harmlessly off the monster's hide. It ceased a tank in its jaws, crushing the tank even before its acidic saliva had done its work and swallowing it. Again and again the monster repeated the process, crushing several of the tanks each time it pounced on one it had selected as prey. As the beast satisfied its gluttony its fleshy tail lashed out aimlessly, crushing a group of soldiers trying in vain to fight back with rocket launchers and machine guns. As the soldiers realized their error they retreated back into the base, but the foul monster chased after them, snatching several up to die horrible deaths in its wicked mouth. Then, as the soldiers hid within the compound of the base, the lustful beast tore away at it with its claws and fangs, destroying every structure and devouring everyone it found within the wreckage.

Slowly, the creature surveyed the rubble. Its hunger was not yet satisfied, and though its keen sense of smell could detect flesh, living and dead, hidden within the devastation, it was smart enough to realize that its appetite would not be calmed here. With a frustrated hiss the hell beast turned and waded back into the sea, slowly slipping beneath the water and diving deep into the abyss. It would feed in the depths for now, where prey was bountiful, and leave a threat greater than itself to destroy those that had survived its rampage.

    ***

Far away from the war zone in Hokkaido, a young woman awoke with a start, her body covered in sweat, her heart beating rapidly as the nightmare that was more than a nightmare passed into memory.

"Father!" she cried from her bed. "Father, come quick!"

Her father rushed into her bedroom, holding his robe as he tried in desperation to determine the cause of his daughter's panic.

"What is it Erika?" her father asked, trying to sound calm and keep his voice soothing while anxiety threatened to over power him.

"It's Deutalios!" she responded. "It's just as we feared! He surfaced and attacked somewhere!"

Her father swallowed hard. "You know this?" he said, his usually calm and rational mind struggling to grasp at the conclusion he could not avoid reaching.

"Yes," Erika replied, "I saw it all as I slept."

"Oh God!" the man cried as he pulled his daughter closer. "Don't worry Erika, we'll find a way to stop this. I promise Erika, we'll find a way."

Erika began to sob just as her father sobbed, holding him tightly for what she realized might be the last time. She wanted to tell him he shouldn't have made the awful mistake he had made, but she knew it would only hurt him even more, and so in the silence of the night they held each other and cried.

    Chapter I

Kyoko Nagamine sat behind her desk, the wait of a nation in panic riding on her shoulders. The Prime Minister's face, once strong and very pretty, now suffered as her age and worries began to tear through it. Her blouse and dress, usually bright and colorful were, perhaps fittingly, grey. Her hair seemed slightly untamed, highly unusual for the Prime Minister who always made sure her hairstyle was neat and conservative. Even the false pink flower she wore on her blouse seemed faded, as if any life that might have been in it was being drained away. Things were indeed grim for her nation once more, and Nagamine clearly suffered with her people.

On the other side of her desk sat Mitsuo Katagiri, Deputy Secretary of the Interior and head of the Crisis Control Intelligence Agency, CCI. He slouched somewhat, obviously grim as he and the Prime Minister discussed the events of the past month. As Nagamine studied the materials he had handed her she studied him through secret glances; idly noting that Katagiri was always serious and seemingly devoid of deep emotions. Worst of all he was arrogant, and though she was willing to keep him in the government as long as he performed well as the head of CCI, she had neither forgotten or forgiven his foolish stunts during Godzilla's rampage.

Now though, the nation found itself in another crisis. A new monster had appeared, seemingly from nowhere, and had ravaged a military base nearly a month ago. Now the creature was attacking ships all around Japan, each time disappearing back into the deep and eluding every attempt to find and kill it. What was more frightening was that the survivors of the monster's attacks soon died from horrific organ failure and internal bleeding, symptoms eerily similar to those of the R-Virus, the nightmare weapon that had been used against Godzilla three years before. Nagamine had done everything in her power to insure the virus, a terrible weapon of mass destruction created accidentally in a lab, would never be used again. Now it seemed that this new monster, whatever it was, acted as a carrier for the disease. As the creature terrorized the sea, the few fisherman brave enough to fish the Japanese waters complained of the scarcity of the fish, indeed all animal life seemed to be fleeing from the abomination. As Nagamine thought of this her teeth dug into her bottom lip. If the creature could not find food in the ocean, it was only a matter of time before it returned to land. And if it chose one of Japan's great cities, the virus it carried could be unleashed like a biblical plague.

"This new creature is like nothing we've ever seen before." she commented.

Katagiri nodded. "The monster certainly seems to possess the characteristics of very different creatures-both the features of a rodent and of a fish. What I find most disturbing though are the dorsal plates, which seem to be very similar to Godzilla's."

Nagamine sighed as she considered this. "Where could this horrible thing have come from?" she asked. "Or better yet, why must Japan suffer like this?"

"I have no answers." Katagiri said quickly. "Mrs. Ishigaki has stated that its possible the monster originated in Tokyo when the R-Virus was used against Godzilla. Gen-Tech's theory is that it may have been a rat exposed to Godzilla's radioactive blood three years ago and mutated, becoming a carrier of the virus. All I know is that we need to destroy this monster quickly, before it comes to shore."

"Definitely. But how do we find the creature?"

Katagiri shook his head. "I wish I knew. The damn thing stays underwater, only coming to the surface at random intervals. We think it’s living in the Japan Trench, but finding it will be a problem. The trench is nine thousand meters deep and stretches from the Kuril Islands to the Bonin Islands, never mind the fact that while we're hunting it the monster might appear elsewhere."

    "Damn it all." Nagamine whispered.

"You'll be saying more than that in a minute." Katagiri warned.

Nagamine paused and stared at him for a second, fearing what he was about to say. But Katagiri said nothing, he merely handed her an envelope and stared intently back. Slowly, Nagamine opened it and glanced over the documents it contained, her jaw dropping in horror as she did.

"Dear God." she gasped as she peered at Katagiri over her reading glasses.

"Godzilla is still alive." he responded. "We've been monitoring what turned out to be his heart beat coming from within Mt. Fuji at our base at the foot of the mountain."

"How on earth could he have survived? He fell into molten lava; nothing could have survived that!"

"Nothing normal. Magma is at least six hundred and fifty degrees Celsius and apparently Godzilla is able to survive in it without complication."

"I can't believe this." Nagamine groaned. "After all we did. After all the sacrifices..."

"We can't blame ourselves." Katagiri reasoned. "If we do so we'll cave to weakness. Our only option is to figure out a way of destroying him should he ever awaken."

"But what could destroy him? If he can survive within a volcano for at least a year, what could kill such a monster?"

"I don't know." Katagiri admitted. "I think for now we should focus on keeping Godzilla contained. We need to be sure that only a few people know about this and we need a number of people focused on the problem."

"The people have the right to know Katagiri." Nagamine warned. "And it's my duty to inform them."

"Madame Prime Minister," Katagiri replied solemnly, "if word gets out it will cause a panic. It will look as if you lied to the nation last year and the popular support you have depended on thus far will quickly evaporate. You need that support right now to pursue measures that will enable us to kill Godzilla. Worse yet, if an eruption were initiated, by terrorists for example, Godzilla might be set free. I honestly believe, Madame Prime Minister, that by announcing that Godzilla is still alive you would be courting disaster."

"I don't know right now Katagiri." Nagamine sighed, holding her face in her hands. "I need time to think."

"I understand." the politician replied. "But we have to work quickly."

"I know." she replied. "I've already requested that Dr. Minami return to Japan. When he found out that the new monster is a carrier for something similar to the R-Virus he immediately said that he'd help anyway he could. I've also asked Dr. Fukuda to take Miss Niiyama's position now that she's left us. I'll be sure to brief both of them."

"What about the girl?" Katagiri asked.

Nagamine glared at him. "I have taken great measures to insure that Emiko Tanaka and her guardian are safe. They are hidden away so perfectly that it's almost as if they never existed. No one will ever harm them or try to exploit the child's strange gift for personal gain, that is one promise I have sworn to keep."

    Katagiri flinched, but said nothing.

"I don't suppose we'll be using the Super X this time, not without Mr. Kitigawa's skills at least." Nagamine continued. "We do have much better laser technology and some improved weaponry though, but I'm not sure that helps us any."

"I don’t know if it helps us at all." Katagiri said candidly. "Especially considering that our enemy can survive in molten lava."

    ***

Megumi Kobayashi watched intently as Akane Ishigaki, the famous and ambitious CEO of Gen-Tech approached the microphone. The young reporter sized her up, studying "the Ice Queen" as some of her fellow reporters called her and reaching conclusions that only Megumi, with her incredible gift of perception, could fathom. She could plainly see that Ishigaki was, as everyone seemed to agree, cold, ruthless, self-absorbed, and perhaps even heartless. She could see that she was very vain, a woman in her forties that had managed to fool the world that she was still in her thirties, but also sensed that she was very smart, perhaps even cunning. This woman, she realized, was bad news for anyone that crossed her.

Suddenly it dawned on her that Ishigaki was speaking. Damn it, Megumi! Focus! She had always done this. It never failed that she would get so wrapped up in her perceptions that she'd neglect her work. That, above all else, had held her career back.

"We at Gen-Tech," Ishigaki was saying, without emotion, "are sympathetic to those who have lost loved ones to this deadly monster. We are also very concerned that the disease it spreads may one day soon threaten our nation and might prove a greater threat than the monster itself. However, we are proud to announce that our scientists, working in cooperation with the government, have risen to the challenge and delivered hope in the service of our nation."

The Ice Queen paused for dramatic effect, a well-known favorite trick.

"We are pleased to announce that we have created a remarkable new medicine, AMVE, that has proven effective in combating the virus. We at Gen-Tech have pledged to do everything possible to manufacture this new miracle of science to combat what might soon be a grave threat to our national security."

Ishigaki continued on and on. The gathered audience was all on the edge of their seats, amazed that there was hope that the threat of a monster born disease might not even become a reality. This was a true blessing, as Akane Ishigaki had said it was a miracle of science, nothing less.

Megumi, however, wasn't buying it. Why wasn't anyone surprised that Gen-Tech had created this new wonder drug so quickly? Why was everyone rolling over for this woman who clearly loved to grand stand and was using this announcement as an opportunity to do nothing more than further her own ambitions. Soon she was so angry she couldn't concentrate and found her mind wandering. Then, she felt a chill creep over her and turned to find its source.

Megumi's eyes immediately fell on a man, aging but still handsome with a straight back and a firm face, his hair only beginning to grey. He was watching Ishigaki, appearing remarkably reserved as he took in the wondrous announcement. This man, Megumi realized, new more than he let on. Then, slowly, her eyes moved from the man to the girl next to him.

The girl was younger than Megumi, in her late teens or early twenties. She was pretty, very pretty, and watched Ishigaki with a fascination that hinted at incredible intelligence. She seemed on the surface to be a perfectly normal and innocent person, but Megumi perceived some darkness within her that frightened her greatly, something that was like nothing she had ever known before. It was as if something was in this girl, some monster raging within that wanted to be free of its cage. Whatever it was, it chilled Megumi's soul.

Suddenly Megumi realized that the man was staring back at her. She quickly looked away, but not before noticing how intently he stared at her.

Now was the time for the press to ask their questions, and Megumi jumped at the chance to challenge Ishigaki.

"The timing of your announcement seems almost unbelievable." Megumi said, crafting her words carefully as to both sting Ishigaki and force the Ice Queen to answer a legitimate question. "Can you tell us how Gen-Tech managed to create this new drug so soon after the monster's appearance?"

Ishigaki's face hardened as she glared at Megumi, but she quickly forced a smile, somehow making her eyes brighten as she did.

"Our scientists at Gen-Tech are very good at what they do." she said with a laugh, managing to pass the comment off to a gullible press as mild humor rather than seeming to dodge a question. "This new monster appeared almost a month ago." she reminded everyone sternly. "The time that has passed is far too long for those who have lost loved ones to it."

With that, the press conference ended and Megumi was left to silently fume. Ishigaki had not only dodged her question, she had shielded herself behind public fear and the grieving loved ones of victims. There was no way that anyone could openly question the timing of the announcement now. The Ice Queen had pulled a remarkable maneuver-leaping out of the firing range and behind a deflective shield that had turned Megumi into a heartless monster. The more she thought about, the more Megumi believed that there was something strange happening within the walls of Gen-Tech, and the more she hated Akane Ishigaki.

As everyone was leaving someone bumped into Megumi and made her drop her notes without even an apology. As she stooped to reach it, stewing even more within herself as she did, a man reached down and picked them up for her. To her embarrassment, she found that it was the man that she had found staring back at her just moments before.

"Th…Thank you." she choked, unable to look him in the eye.

"I thought that was a very good question you asked." the man said. "You strike me as a very thoughtful and intuitive person."

"Oh…well..." Megumi blushed. She wasn't used to compliments, especially not in regard to her work.

"Might I know you're name?" the man asked.

    "Megumi Kobayashi." she said quickly.

"Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Kobayashi. My name is Genichiro Shirigami, and this is my daughter, Erika."

"A pleasure." the young woman said with a warm smile that made Megumi doubt her earlier assessment.

"Likewise." she responded. "But do you mean to say, that you are the Dr. Shirigami, the man famous for his work with G-Cells?"

Dr. Shirigami laughed. "I'm hardly famous. I was just a project coordinator for a year or two, nothing more. But it was truly delightful meeting you Mrs. Kobayashi. Keep asking questions, it will help you go far."

He extended his hand and when Megumi took it, a vision flashed before her eyes. It surprised her at first, though she didn't see why it should. She had suffered from visions since she was a little girl, something she wasn't very keen on telling anyone. They only appeared in brief flashes, leaving her struggling to remember what they were. As Dr. Shirigami walked away from her she recalled having seen a man holding his daughter, only a little girl, crying in his arms as he himself wept openly. It was a scene of great pain and sadness, and she wondered if it was a scene from Dr. Shirigami's life.

Only after she had left the building did Megumi bother to look down at the notes she carried. Included in them was a folded piece of paper, one that hadn't been there before. She opened it, and her eyes widened as she saw what was written on it.

"If you want your question answered come see me as soon as possible. Very important. Lake Ashino is beautiful this time of year."

    ***

Colonel Koichi Gondo stared up at Mt. Fuji, his face emotionless, unreadable. Within himself he was contemplating, calculating. Mt. Fuji was quite beautiful, he thought. And, like all beautiful things, it had something dark hidden in its heart. In reality the mountain, the very symbol of Japan, was a prison for the Dark God himself, Godzilla. Very few people new that Godzilla was still alive, sleeping within the core of the volcano. Colonel Gondo himself wasn't supposed to know, but he knew. That was what mattered.

"Soon." Gondo muttered to himself, glancing at the position of the sun.

He turned, walking back into his office at the Fuji military base. The general was gone to an important meeting in Tokyo and had left him in charge. Everything was perfect.

"Soon it will be time for the masks to come off."

    Chapter II

Megumi knocked on the door of Dr. Genichiro Shirigami. His house was quite large, and very beautiful, as was the yard. Beautiful flowers grew everywhere, especially roses. In fact, Megumi had never seen any so beautiful. His property overlooked Lake Ashino, and as his note had said, it was wonderful to behold this time of year.

Dr. Shirigami quickly answered the door.

"Ah, Mrs. Kobayashi, welcome." he said charmingly. "Please, come in."

Megumi entered and found his home wonderfully decorated, very spacious and warm. Dr. Shirigami's daughter appeared and greeted her, and Megumi's perceptive gifts told her the yard and houses were as breathe taking as they were thanks to her.

"Ah, Erika, you remember Mrs. Kobayashi from the press conference in Sendai don't you?" Dr. Shirigami asked.

"Certainly father." Erika Shirigami replied sweetly, taking Megumi's hand.

A vision flashed before Megumi's eyes. A girl in a hospital room, barely clinging to life. A man next to her bed sat with his face in his hands, crying. Then, as the heart monitor let lose a horrible scream, the vision was gone.

"Please, come in and sit down." Dr. Shirigami said politely.

"Yes, thank you." Megumi said, sitting on a sofa across from Dr. Shirigami and Erika.

"Can I get you anything?" Erika asked.

"No thank you." Megumi replied, still pondering the vision. "Tell me, Dr. Shirigami, your note said that..."

"I could answer your question for you." Dr. Shirigami interrupted. "And I can."

Megumi started to take out her notepad, but Dr. Shirigami raised a hand in protest.

"Take no notes. You won't need them, and it may be better that you don't have them. What I am about to tell you, Mrs. Kobayashi, you may not believe. But I swear to you, every bit is the truth, no matter how horrible it may seem."

"Please," Megumi said, intrigued by what he was saying, "go ahead. I'll listen to anything you have to say."

"I'm very pleased to hear it." Dr. Shirigami replied. "That's one reason I singled you out of the crowd. Listening and drawing conclusions from your observations seems a great skill of yours Mrs. Kobayashi. But, more importantly, you know how to ask questions that need to be answered."

"As you have probably deduced," he continued, "the timing of Gen-Tech's announcement is no coincidence. It is only fortunate that Deutalios has not attacked a major city as of yet, else no one, perhaps not even you, would have dared to question them."

    "Deutalios?"

"That was the name given to the monster upon his birth." Dr. Shirigami answered. "I should know. I'm the one who created him."

Erika grabbed her father's hand as Dr. Shirigami sat there, assessing Megumi's reaction. Megumi was stunned. What Dr. Shirigami was saying was impossible to believe, much less accept, but her intuition told her that the doctor was telling the truth.

"Please, don't judge my father." Erika protested immediately. "He's a good man, truly. What is happening isn't his fault."

"Erika, please." Dr. Shirigami said softly. "I will explain everything to Mrs. Kobayashi. That is, if she is still interested in what I have to say."

"I...I am." Megumi assured him. "Please, excuse me. It's just that, what you say is..."

"Terrible." Dr. Shirigami finished. "That's how I described him when he was born and devoured his mother. You see, after Godzilla attacked Osaka three years ago Gen-Tech begin working with G-Cells. I was in charge of Project G-Cell, which was meant to unravel every mystery the cells contained. The things we learned were extraordinary, but I can assure you that the mysteries Godzilla presented us with only grew greater the more we discovered.

"But I digress. Within Project G-Cell were many projects, all coordinated by myself. One of these projects was called Project Chimera. Do you recognize the name?"

"The Chimera was a monster from mythology, wasn't it?" Megumi responded.

"Correct. It was a monster from Greek mythology with the features of a lion, a goat, and a serpent. The purpose of Project Chimera was, if anyone asked, to see if other monsters could be created within a laboratory in order to better understand the genesis of Godzilla, thus helping to prevent other such creatures from being born. However, let me assure you that I have no doubt in my mind that Akane Ishigaki had darker designs for the project."

"Is she really as awful as everyone says?"

"More so." Dr. Shirigami replied matter-of-factly. "I believe that Mrs. Ishigaki hoped to use whatever monsters were created by Project Chimera for profit, perhaps even to sale as living weapons of mass destruction. However, for Deutalios, it seems she's come up with an even more sinister scheme."

"She turned the monster lose intentionally didn't she." Megumi interjected. "She's using the panic he's causing to market this new wonder drug to the government, so they'll buy it at any price, no questions asked."

"Correct. At least, that's her short-term goal. I'm sure she's planning to use AMVE to boost the perception of Gen-Tech around the globe as a humanitarian organization. Behind that front, she could do anything she wishes, at least for quite some time.”

"What about Deutalios? Is there anyway to defeat him?"

"It's hard to say." Shirigami sighed. "First, let me assure you, that Deutalios is, in my opinion, no where near as powerful or indestructible as Godzilla was. However, that's not to say that killing him won't be difficult."

Shirigami paused, obviously shifting through the volumes of information stored in his brilliant mind before continuing.

"Deutalios is a combination of creatures. When we were infusing the DNA of Godzilla with other animals we discovered that, for some reason, the infused DNA proved fatal, always producing still-born young or animals that lived only short, painful lives as tumors ravaged their bodies and their own organs turned against them. It was truly dreadful to behold. We found that only by blending the DNA with that of two other creatures into an extremely complex DNA molecule could we create a new life form. That's how Deutalios was born.

"Deutalios was created using the DNA of a rat, a mako shark, and Godzilla himself. The result was the most horrific monster we have yet seen. When he was small Deutalios was incredibly ferocious and had a ghastly appetite, hence the chaos he's bringing to Japan's waters. We had to be especially careful in his containment as he's also incredibly intelligent and because his saliva is acidic; features that made him an incredible escape artist."

"Then couldn't Ishigaki claim that he simply escaped?" Megumi asked.

"We managed to contain him for three years." Shirigami pointed out. "Besides that, he wasn't a carrier for the R-Virus when I worked there."

    "The R-Virus?"

"Do you remember when Godzilla attacked Japan three years ago?" Shirigami asked. "Do you know how they drove him back into the sea?"

"A deadly virus of some sort, from what I’ve read.” Megumi replied. "However, some say there is a little girl that could communicate with the monster and that she drove him away."

"You've read Akira Kitigawa's book" Shirigami laughed. "I'm afraid I don't much stock in that sort of fairy tale. However, what Kitigawa wrote about the R-Virus is true. It was a deadly virus, created in a Gen-Tech lab, accidentally, by a dear friend of mine. Ishigaki exploited it, convincing the government to use it against Godzilla. That virus, or at least a related strain, is what Deutalios is now carrying."

"But why doesn't the virus kill Deutalios himself?"

"Deutalios is akin to Godzilla." Shirigami reminded her. "A child of Godzilla, if you will. As such, he has remarkable regenerative powers. They are, of course, not on par with Godzilla's, but they have effectively shielded him from the virus's effects and enabled his immune system to adapt to it, just as Godzilla did."

Shirigami looked away, reflective, sad. His daughter took his hand and held it tightly, blinking back tears as she did.

"Please forgive us." Erika said. "Considering all that has occurred..."

"I understand." Megumi said, assuming that Erika was too emotional to continue. But as she watched, she realized that something was horribly wrong.

Erika was clutching her throat, as if silently choking. Then her eyes rolled back and she fell to the floor, shaking violently. Shirigami immediately jumped to his feet, screaming his daughter's name as he produced a hypodermic needle and yellow fluid from his pocket and quickly injected into his daughter's arm. Then, as the violent shaking slowly ceased and Erika was left shivering in his arms, the doctor wept. And all this occurred as the tiny device attached to the bottom of Shirigami's chair recorded away, transmitting every sound to a vehicle parked down the street.

Colonel Gondo watched as the clock ticked down. Time was slowly passing, bringing forward the hour of destiny that would change the course of history for a nation, perhaps the entire world. As the hands on the clock moved slowly to their destination he thought about the mission he was sent to accomplish, though he didn’t need to. He knew every detail of the plan, right down to its finest points. But it wasn’t Gondo’s sharp memory that had led his superiors to charge him with the mission; it was his ruthless efficiency.

The Colonel watched as the clock clicked down to the hour he had been waiting for.

“Time for these masks to come off.” he mused.

As he muttered those words to himself he heard gunfire. For a brief moment it was as if all out war had broken loose on the base. Through it all, the colonel sat at his desk, calm and collected. And then, as suddenly as it started, the noise ceased.

A soldier rushed into the colonel’s office, his gun still smoking. He saluted, standing to attention, his face remaining rigid even as sin sank deeper into his soul.

“Everything went as planned?” the Colonel asked as he lit a cigarette.

“Yes sir.” the soldier replied. “The operation went smoothly. We are ready to proceed.”

    “Very good.” Gondo said calmly.

He stood and walked out the door, the soldier following closely.

“Get the D-03s ready.” Gondo ordered as he stepped over the bodies of several dead soldiers. “Once we are prepared, send a message to the Prime Minister.”

    ***

Kyoko Nagamine’s eyes moved around the room as she considered the number of great minds gathered together in the situation room. She realized that she was surrounded by incredible genius and talent, each person possessing great talent and knowledge that might be key to ending Japan’s latest crisis.

General Honda sat beside her. Beneath his calm, quiet, fatherly demeanor was one of the greatest military minds to grace Japan since the Second World War. General Honda had been instrumental in the creation of G-Force and many of the advanced weaponry it had deployed in the war with Godzilla. Now, once again, the general was being called by his country to help defend the people of Japan.

Katagiri was present as well. Despite the fact that he was arrogant and self-serving, Nagamine recognized Katagiri’s incredible talent, especially in the area of intelligence gathering and crisis management. She remained deeply suspicious of the ambitious politician, but for now his skill merited his place at the table.

At the end of the table sat Dr. Ryudo Minami, who shifted uncomfortably in his chair when the Prime Minister’s gaze fell on him. Nagamine understood this. The last time Dr. Minami had been at such a meeting he was used as a pawn by the powers that be, nothing more. This time, Nagamine had assured him, things would be different. While she had spoken with Dr. Minami many times via telephone and e-mail, this was her first time to meet him personally. However, his reputation had always preceded him, and Nagamine was anxious to see what his brilliant mind was capable of.

Then there was Dr. Tomonori Fukuda. Dr. Fukuda had succeeded Yuki Niiyama after she had left G-Force with Akira Kitigawa. He was the natural choice, especially since he had been Mrs. Niiyama’s mentor. Many within Nagamine’s inner circle questioned her decision to take him on, especially as (it had seemed) Godzilla was dead and Niiyama’s post no longer needed to be filled. But Nagamine was determined that if a threat like Godzilla would ever appear again, Japan would be ready. Now a threat had appeared, and no one was questioning Nagamine’s judgment.

“Thank you all for coming.” Nagamine began. “I don’t think I need explain the crisis we have on our hands. All of you have been briefed, after all, and we must act quickly. From this point out, we are acting as if we were in a state of constant emergency and must act as such. Is that clear?”

She paused as the rest of the room nodded in silent agreement. She considered Dr. Minami for a moment, whose face was unreadable, before continuing.

“Katagiri,” she implored, “have our attempts to locate the monster been successful?”

    Katagiri shook his head solemnly.

“I see.” Nagamine said sadly. “Then I suppose we can’t afford to move ahead with evacuations. We need to come up with a way to destroy this monster, quickly. If it attacks a city we’ll have a damn plague on our hands.”

“I remember warning your predecessor of that.” Dr. Minami sighed. The whole room turned to him, hanging on every word. “Madame Prime Minister, if I may, I must point out that this new creature, if it truly is a creation of the R-Virus, is a creation of this very government through its own neglect and foolishness.”

“I find you saying such things in this time of crisis almost seditious.” Katagiri hissed.

“That’s enough Katagiri.” Nagamine growled as Dr. Minami glared at the arrogant politician with daggers in his eyes. “Please Dr. Minami, realize that I understand all that and agree with you a hundred percent. But we have to move beyond that now. If you have any ideas on how to destroy this creature, won’t you please share them.”

“Have you thought of using Gen-Tech’s new drug against the creature?” Dr. Minami asked. “If it is a creation of the R-Virus, it might kill it. If not, it might cut the plague off at its source.”

“We’ll certainly consider that.” Nagamine replied. “We’ve already asked for a large supply. It looks like we might need an even larger one then.”

Dr. Minami sighed once more. He knew all to well the tricks of Akane Ishigaki. Ishigaki cared for no one but herself. If she could gain nothing, then she found no reason to help her fellow man, even during times of horrific crisis. He didn’t doubt for a minute that Ishigaki would run the bill for this new cure, AMVE, through the roof regardless of how many people were suffering.

Suddenly a man ran into the room and handed Katagiri a piece of paper. As he whispered in the politician’s ear, Katagiri’s face grew grim. He studied the paper intensely, his eyes moving down to the bottom and then back to the top again and again before gesturing for the man to leave.

The room was silent, wondering what had happened. Had the monster reappeared? Was it attacking a city?

“What is it Katagiri?” Nagamine asked, her breath cold with the chill she felt inside her being.

“Madame Prime Minister,” Katagiri replied, “I’m afraid we have a situation at the Fuji base.”

    ***

Akane Ishigaki sat at her desk, the phone to her ear. She had long known that Dr. Shirigami would be a problem, and now her spies monitoring Shirigami’s home at Lake Ashino were confirming her suspicions. Everything was going too well for her plans to be derailed by a crusader, especially one who knew as much as Shirigami did. Deutalios’s rampage was going according to plan. The monster’s appearance had, as predicted, cause mass panic among the populous, reviving the forgotten fears created by the rampage of Godzilla. And, as panic consumed a nation so desperate for peace, Gen-Tech was reaping great profits from its new miracle cure.

“Shirigami can’t be allowed to threaten everything we’ve worked so hard to accomplish.” Ishigaki hissed into the receiver.

“What do you want us to do?” her pawn asked on the other end of the line. “Bribe him? Threaten him?”

“Bribing him won’t work.” Ishigaki reminded him. “Shirigami is a man of principle. He maintains that he’s above being bribed. Threatening him is too risky. He could always run to the authorities, and while the police might not take him seriously I’m not sure Katagiri and CCI wouldn’t.”

    “So what do we do?”

“You know damn well what you have to do.” Ishigaki snarled. “Take care of Shirigami, his daughter, and any witnesses. Do so quickly, and make sure that you don’t leave any traces that can be linked back to us.”

“But Mrs. Ishigaki,” the man protested, “there’s something wrong with Shirigami’s daughter. She’s very sick.”

“Then do her a favor and put her out of her misery.” Ishigaki replied venomously.

Another one of Ishigaki’s underlings grabbed the phone.

“We’ll take care of it.” he said, emotion absent in his voice. “By the way, you might like to know that the reporter we told you about is that same one that crossed you at the press conference.”

A wicked smile spread across Ishigaki’s face when she heard this. “Excellent. Make sure that she learns a lesson about questioning those she shouldn’t.”

    Chapter III

Kyoko Nagamine stared at the cold, unreadable eyes of Colonel Koichi Gondo as she sat down for this strange and sinister teleconference. She had met Colonel Gondo on numerous occasions, but now it was as if she had never known him. The mask she had known had been thrown away, and the seemingly soulless man staring back at her was revealed beneath.

“Thank you so much for responding to our message so quickly, Madame Prime Minister.” Gondo said. Nagamine said nothing, careful to give no impression of what she was thinking, but was shocked to hear him say such a thing. At first she thought he was goading her, but then she realized he was quite serious, even cordial.

“Colonel Gondo,” the Prime Minister began, “explain yourself.”

Katagiri and General Honda stood to her side, out of Gondo’s view. Both of them silently stewed, watching as the Prime Minister played Gondo’s sick game of cat and mouse with the security of the country hanging in the balance.

“It is quite simple, Madame Prime Minister.” Gondo said politely. “I represent the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. We are acting, Madame Prime Minister, in response to the obvious threat posed by the nation of Japan to the people of our dear nation.”

“What threat?” Nagamine growled. “Japan poses no threat to the North Koreans.”

“The threat, Madame Prime Minister, is your military might. Even after Godzilla’s containment, Japan has continued to maintain incredibly powerful weapons that pose a threat to our national security.”

Containment. Nagamine could hardly believe what she had heard. From the corner of her eye she could see both Katagiri and General Honda rubbing their hands and whispering to each other nervously. He knows Godzilla is alive.

“Colonel, I believe I understand what your threats are. What are your demands?”

“You are very astute, Madame Prime Minister.” Gondo said, amazingly sincere in his praise. “Dismantle your entire military and show that you are a friend of our people by sending a generous amount of grain and rice within one week, or we shall release Godzilla upon your nation.”

“And what, may I ask, is to assure us that you will not attack us upon disarmament, or worse yet, release Godzilla then?”

“You have the word of our Grand Leader that no such tragedy will occur.” Gondo said. “You have one hour to make a decision. If you do not respond within that time, we will fire the missiles and free Godzilla.”

With that, the conference was ended.

“We can’t give into them.” General Honda urged.

“Definitely not.” Nagamine responded. “We have to stop this, immediately.”

“I’m not sure if we can stop it.” Katagiri said solemnly. “We’ve known the North Koreans have infiltrated Japan in the past, but we had no idea that they had infiltrated G-Force. There’s no telling how deep they are in or how many there are.”

“We’ll sort that out in due time.” Nagamine replied. “Order an air strike on the Fuji base immediately.”

“If we do that, they may fire the missiles.” General Honda warned.

    Nagamine paused, considering her options.

“That’s a risk we have to take.” Katagiri interjected. “We have to keep Godzilla in his prison. I, for one, refuse to believe that the North Koreans can be trusted, and as such we can neither cave to them nor hesitate to strike.”

“You’re right.” the Prime Minister responded. “Order the air strike.”

    ***

Megumi sat on the sofa next to Dr. Shirigami, trying her best to comfort him as he sat with his head buried in his hands. Erika was in her room, sleeping. Her father had acted just in time. Had he not acted as quickly as he had, she would be dead.

“You have no idea how horrible it is.” Dr. Shirigami sobbed. “I’ve been watching my daughter die for years, since the day she was born, just like her mother. With each passing day, I come closer and closer to losing her, and when I do part of me will die as well.”

Megumi placed a compassionate hand on Shirigami’s shoulder, trying her best to bring him some comfort. As she did so, a terrible vision flashed before her eyes. She could see Erika in a hospital bed with her father at her side, crying. She saw him looking at her through desperate eyes, calling out to God for some sort of mercy that would not come before finally cursing the heavens and turning his back on them. She saw him sneaking into a Gen-Tech laboratory and stealing something, a box of some sort. Then she saw him in his home, doing some sort of experiment; something horrible. Then, as quickly as it had all come, it was gone.

“May I ask,” Megumi began carefully, “what is wrong with her Dr. Shirigami?”

“My wife,” Shirigami said, choking back tears, “was one of the Hibakusha.”

Megumi bit her lip, understanding more fully the extent of the doctor’s pain. The Hibakusha were the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those that had survived the wrath of fires like no other. They were entitled to government support, and still faced fear and discrimination in Japan.

“She was only a little girl then, a complete innocent,” Dr. Shirigami continued, “and yet she was punished for crimes she didn’t commit. Many people fear even being near someone who is Hibakusha, as if they might have some contagious disease. I knew better than that, and fell in love with a wonderful woman who had been called to bare more than she should have. Late in her life, she brought Erika into the world, and our life together, as brief as it was, was happy.

“However, the effects of the radiation exposure took their toll, and in time my wife died. Erika was just a little girl then. I remember vividly how horrible it was to watch my wife die; to try and keep the most horrible parts a secret from Erika. I remember holding my daughter in my arms after she had died, both of us crying together as I did.”

Shirigami paused, losing himself in his own thoughts.

“That’s when I found God I think. A lot of people scoff at the idea of faith, but it’s a wonderful thing. It pulls you through the hardest parts of life; it gives you reason to keep going even when you don’t understand the world around you.”

“Erika’s condition is the same as her mother’s then?” Megumi asked.

“I’m afraid so.” Shirigami sighed. “We’ve found that radiation can do incredible damage to human heredity, and that’s what has happened to my daughter. I’m doing my best to keep her alive, but every day she slips a little closer to…”

Shirigami paused, closing his eyes as he pushed back tears. Megumi sympathized with him; wondering how he had anymore tears to shed. But this wasn’t the whole truth, she realized. Dr. Shirigami was hiding something from her; something horrible; something to awful to tell.

“I hope you will respect our privacy in this matter.” Shirigami said finally.

“Of course.” Megumi replied. “Not all reporters are heartless you know.”

Shirigami smiled slightly. “Yes, I know. Even still, you are one of a kind in so many ways.”

Suddenly Shirigami’s front door swung open and struck the wall. Three men in black coats, wearing dark glasses and gloves rushed in, pointing guns at the stunned doctor and reporter.

“You two, get up and keep quiet!” one of the men barked.

Shirigami and Megumi stood and stepped back slowly, staring in horror at the guns pointed at them.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Shirigami snapped, anger melting together with his fear.

“I said keep quiet!” the man spat.

    “Father!”

Shirigami and Megumi gasped as they saw Erika running down the stairs. When the intruders heard her cry out, one of them panicked. He turned and fired, the bullet striking Erika in her breast.

“No!” Shirigami screamed as blood covered Erika’s blouse.

Erika staggered forward, her body turning white and trembling violently. Slowly, she raised her head to look into her father’s eyes, the trembling growing even more violent.

“I love you, Father.” she choked.

Erika’s eyes rolled back in her head. Slowly, her mouth opened, and a horrible wail that no human voice could make escaped from within her. The assailants stood there, too stunned by the horrible sound to move as Erika raised a trembling hand that pointed at the man who had shot her. A horrible sensation of pain, sorrow, and confusion tore deep into Megumi’s soul as the nightmarish wail escaped from within Erika’s being. A vision flashed briefly before her eyes, adding more confusion to the moment. Godzilla? What does Godzilla have to do with this?

“Oh God no!” Shirigami screamed. “What have I done!”

It was then Megumi realized the horrible secret of Dr. Shirigami. He had found a way to save his daughter’s life, but at a horrible price.

The skin of Erika’s arm shredded like paper as dozens of fanged tentacles tore from it and wrapped around her screaming assailant. The other two fired at her, every bullet striking her body, causing her blood, which had now become green, to gush forth. But Erika’s body didn’t flinch or tremble; instead she stood there as cold and unmoving as a stone while her other hand rose to point at another of her attackers.

The man tried to run as more tentacles tore free and lunged at him, lifting him high into the air to join his comrade. The man who had shouted at Shirigami and Megumi stepped back, too afraid to move as he watched his two accomplices be torn apart in the air. Another inhuman wail escaped Erika’s mouth, her body turning now to fix her death-like gaze on the last of the intruders. Then, to the horror of the three witnesses, Erika’s body was ripped apart from within.

The thing that emerged from within was like nothing mankind had ever known the horrors of. The creature’s body was a massive, green, slimy stalk with four great root-like legs at its base that gripped the stairs like those of a giant spider or crab might have. All about the thing its horrid tentacles squirmed like a nest of snakes, with sinister leaf-like jaws lined with fangs on the end of each one snapping and hissing like serpents from the pit. At the top of the monster’s great stalk was a flower, a massive rose that was bright red and very beautiful to behold. Slowly, the petals folded back to reveal fanged jaws within the flower that released another wail, this one sad and mourning.

The last of the attackers tried to run, but the enormous plant monster was too fast. With remarkable speed and agility it leapt from the stairs and landed right behind him. Its stalk bent, the fang-lined jaws within the massive flower at its top opening to take the screaming man’s head and torso into the monster’s mouth. Then the stalk straightened once more as the nightmare thing swallowed the man whole, seemingly growing and swelling as it did.

Shirigami and Megumi stepped back as the enormous creature turned and loomed over them, far larger now than when it had ripped itself free of Erika’s body. The demonic, serpentine tentacles rose as one and focused on the pair, hissing maliciously as they did. Megumi stared up at the massive rose, sensing that the creature was looking back at her and Shirigami even though it had no eyes to see with. She could feel fierce rage fueled by pain; a thirst for vengeance and a cry for peace merged together as one coming from within the thing’s soul-the soul that had once belonged to Erika Shirigami.

    “Erika!” Shirigami shouted. “Erika, no!”

The thing stopped, apparently recognizing Shirigami’s voice. It let out another wail full of sorrow and remorse, before turning and charging through the wall, heading through the yard straight for Lake Ashino.

Megumi staggered backwards, trying to catch herself. She felt dizzy and overwhelmed, as if the energy had been drained from her body. The full impact of the strange plant entity’s raging emotions had taxed her perceptive powers, overwhelming her fragile human mind in the process. Then, as Shirigami stepped forward to catch her, she lost consciousness.

    ***

Colonel Gondo stood a short distant from the massive missile launchers pointed at Mt. Fuji. Remarkable weapons really., he thought to himself. Grand Leader would love to have them. We must be sure that the design plans are sent back to him. He’d love to see them himself. The drilling technology has so much potential. We could use it both to improve infrastructure and for the common defense.

He looked at his watch, growing impatient with the Prime Minister. Her hour was almost up. How dare she take advantage of our Grand Leader’s generosity. She should pay for such insolence. Then he heard the roar of the jets.

Colonel Gondo turned, catching sight of the silver aircraft racing forward, like angels of war with purpose. Grand Leader’s “generosity” had been betrayed, he realized. Their “diplomatic” mission had failed. But in their final moments the Korean infiltrators could insure that Japan would never have peace again.

“Fire the missiles!” Gondo ordered. “Free Godzilla and let the Japanese die beneath his feet!”

Immediately the D-03 missiles shot from their cannons, speeding towards Mt. Fuji as the jets released their deadly payload on the terrorists that had fired them. The pilots of the jets could do nothing but watch in horror as the drill-tipped missiles bore deep into the mountain, causing the volcano to erupt.

“You see there!” Gondo shouted at the jets. “You could do nothing to stop us! Now you will die by fire!”

Then, just as Gondo said those words, a missile exploded where he stood, completely destroying him.

    ***
Kyoko Nagamine sat in the situation room, silently waiting for the soldiers sent to deal with Colonel Gondo to radio back. She and everyone around her knew what would happen if they failed. If Godzilla were released, Japan might never know the sweet peace that it had cherished for such a short time ever again. Nagamine, for one, was determined to see that Gondo and his diabolical plans were stopped.

Suddenly the voice of one of the pilots echoed through the room.

“We’ve taken out the terrorists, but the mission has still failed.” he said. “They’ve launched the missiles. Mt. Fuji has erupted.”

A death-like silence took control of the room as his words faded into nothing.

    “Damn it all.” Nagamine whispered.

    Chapter IV

As Mt. Fuji spewed lava and smoke high into the air a dark form rose from within the chaos. Blazing eyes that had not seen the sun in a year scanned the horizon as a terrible roar echoed across the land. Slowly a moving mountain of flesh and bone rose from within the very symbol of Japan, its charcoal-grey hide clearly visible against the snow of Fuji’s mountaintop from far away. Godzilla had returned, his fury undaunted by the fires he had been cast into in the last battle of his long raging war.

Again Godzilla roared, announcing to the entire world that he had returned. Then, slowly, he became aware of the others.

As he had dreamed within the fires Godzilla had sensed that others, baring some strange connection to himself, had been born. But as he had slumbered these sensations had passed as short dreams, the force that he now felt pulsing in every cell having been far to weak to stir him from his sleep. Now though he was free, and he could feel both of these strange things within his own being. They were part of him; his children; abominations made from his flesh. He found them repulsive, felt as if they were crawling within his own being when they had no right to be. There was a remedy for that however.

Godzilla roared for a third time as he made his way down the slopes of Mt. Fuji, headed in the direction of Lake Ashino. He could sense his dark daughter there, growing stronger every moment. She sensed him too, he realized. She was calling out to him, beckoning for him to come and face her. There was some horrid force to her call, a force Godzilla understood all to well.

    Revenge.

    ***

Megumi awoke in the forest surrounding Lake Ashino. Near her, Dr. Shirigami stood, staring out at the lake as the sun began to set. She followed his sorrowful gaze to the center of the lake, where the massive rose monster now loomed fifty meters above the surface of the water, it’s horrible wail carrying across the sky.

“I figured it might be better if we got away from the house before anyone started asking questions.” Shirigami said. “For…Erika’s sake.”

“You used G-Cells to try to treat Erika’s condition, didn’t you?” Megumi asked as she stood, making her way to the doctor’s side.

Tears appeared in Shirigami’s eyes, again amazing Megumi that there were any left. “I couldn’t bare to lose my daughter.” he said. “Erika was all I had. I knew it was risky, but something had to be done to save her.”

“I don’t judge you, Dr. Shirigami.” Megumi assured him. “But you have a responsibility now. Tell me, what is that monster?”

    “Biollante.”

    “What is Biollante?”

“There is still so much we don’t understand about G-Cells.” Shirigami explained. I couldn’t just infuse my daughter with Godzilla’s DNA because it would have destroyed her. I had to blend Godzilla’s cells with those of a rose just as we did with Project Chimera. I never counted on the G-Cells transforming my daughter into a monster. If I had known…”

Shirigami stopped, choking back more tears. Megumi could see that he wanted to go on, wanted to unburden himself of the darkness he bore in his own soul, but understood that he could not. No man had ever born the burden that Dr. Shirigami now carried. The good doctor had turned his own daughter, someone he loved and valued more than his own life, into a horrible monster.

“Where did you get the name?” Megumi asked. “Biollante?”

“During the times when my daughter would go into seizures, sometimes another personality would emerge. It called itself Biollante, a being of pure rage and hatred. This is Biollante incarnate, I’m sure of it.”

Biollante wailed again and Megumi felt a wave of emotion pass over her. Hatred, sorrow, confusion; powerful, unbearable emotions were churning in Biollante’s heart. She understood now where the deep hatred came from, but why was the creature sorrowful?

“Erika is still within Biollante!” Megumi gasped.

    “What did you say?”

“I can sense it! You said Biollante is pure rage, but there’s also a lot of sadness coming from that monster. Erika is still inside, a human soul trapped in the bowels of a monster. Thus the monster suffers confusion as the two consciousnesses war within it.”

“You can sense all this?” Dr. Shirigami asked.

Megumi looked down at her feet. “I’ve always been able to sense such things.” she said. “I don’t know why, it just happens.”

“You have a remarkable gift.” Shirigami explained. “Don’t ever mistake it for anything else.”

Again Biollante wailed, the sound chilling Megumi to her bones as she understood its meaning.

    “Oh God!” she gasped.

“What is it?” Shirigami asked, looking worried as he stared from Megumi to the thing that had been his daughter.

    “Godzilla.”

Shirigami grew numb when he heard the name.

“Godzilla is still alive!” Shirigami gasped. “Incredible. They dropped him into the core of a volcano and he still survives.”

“Biollante is calling out to Godzilla.” Megumi warned. “It wants a battle. It wants to kill him.”

“It’s drawing Godzilla here?” Shirigami stammered. “Why? Why must it fight Godzilla?”

“Revenge.” Megumi explained. “Biollante blames Godzilla for its creation. It sees him as its father now.”

    ***

Nagamine walked from the situation room to a nearby meeting room, moving at a pace that was brisk and full of determination. The unthinkable had occurred and now Godzilla had returned. She, along with her entire nation, had thought the nightmare was over. Fate, however, had deemed otherwise. She had hoped she would never have to take the helm again in this ongoing war, but now that duty had summoned her once more Kyoko Nagamine was bound by the service of her office to rise to the occasion.

She entered the meeting room; finding among those gathered Dr. Minami, Dr. Fukuda, General Honda, Katagiri, and the ever wise and reserved Secretary of the Interior, Akihiko Shigezawa. Many of these great talents had fought this war before. All had known the horrors Godzilla had brought upon their country in the past, and each of them was determined to send the threat back to hell from which it had returned.

“Katagiri,” Nagamine ordered, “give us your intelligence report.”

“Godzilla is headed in the direction of Lake Ashino.” Katagiri replied.

    “Do we know why?”

Katagiri’s face tensed as he looked the Prime Minister in the eye. “Apparently another monster has appeared there.”

    “The sea monster?”

    “No. I’m afraid not.”

The room grew cold as everyone began to digest what Katagiri had said. A third monster had appeared, seemingly from nowhere. Questions were racing through everyone’s minds. How many monsters were there? How much more suffering could Japan bare?

“Apparently, a giant flower has bloomed in the middle of the lake.” Katagiri continued. “No one knows what it is or where it came from, but Godzilla is headed directly for it.”

“Lake Ashino you said?” Dr. Minami asked, something registering in his brilliant mind.

“Yes.” Katagiri replied. “What of it?”

“Nothing.” Dr. Minami quickly replied. “It’s just that I have an old friend there. I’m a little worried.”

“We’ve evacuated the area.” Katagiri assured him before turning back to the Prime Minister, taking note of the scientist’s reaction. “We’re also doing our best to evacuate everything in Godzilla’s path, but considering the pace he’s moving at and the limits of our defense force that’s proving problematic.”

“But how could the creature have survived his plummet into Mt. Fuji?” Secretary Shigezawa wondered.

“It truly goes beyond the reach of our modern scientific understanding.” Dr. Fukuda noted. “It seems that Godzilla is practically indestructible. I, for one, am beginning to wonder if we should even be thinking of killing the beast. It certainly seems impossible after all.”

“And I suppose you would just let him run free in Tokyo then?” Katagiri sneered.

“Katagiri!” Nagamine spat. “Please, Dr. Fukuda, continue.”

The old man cleared his throat and stood so that everyone could hear him. “We obviously can’t kill Godzilla, so why not start thinking outside the box? Why don’t we try to find a way to contain him, or simply drive him away from Japan?”

“And how might we accomplish this?” Shigezawa asked.

Dr. Fukuda sighed deeply before responding. “I have no idea. However, I think it is a far more practical goal then simply trying to kill him. Besides, think of all the things we could learn from Godzilla. Think of what an understanding of his origins, biology, and power might do for mankind.”

“I find your dreams highly unrealistic.” Katagiri said dryly.

“I’m afraid, Dr. Fukuda, that I must agree with Katagiri.” the Prime Minister added. “However, perhaps we should consider alternatives, at least until we discover how to kill Godzilla.”

Dr. Fukuda sat down, his pride wounded and his dreams broken. He tried to understand why everyone around him could not see the wonder of what they were dealing with, but he could not fathom that they had aloud fear and sadness to cloud their hearts so greatly. He himself had once seen Godzilla kill. He himself had once nearly been killed by Godzilla. But none of that changed the reality. Godzilla was a remarkable creature; a miraculous animal that challenged the very power of science and reason to contain its existence within precious reality. In a way, Godzilla was the last mystery in the world, and those about him wanted to kill him rather than contain him and learn.

“Is it possible that Godzilla is going to attack this giant flower?” Nagamine asked to no one specifically.

“Quite possible I would say.” the brilliant Shigezawa observed. “Remember, Godzilla and King Kong sought each other out to kill one another. Perhaps Godzilla will do so with the giant plant and the sea monster as well.”

“So we could allow Godzilla and the other monsters to pick one another off.” General Honda said approvingly. “That makes much more sense than trying to engage all three of them. Why not let them deal with one another, do our best to reduce civilian casualties, and then pick off the last one standing?”

Nagamine was silent for a moment, weighing her options.

“Alright.” the Prime Minister said. “Leave Godzilla to his work. Then we’ll contend with him.”

Deutalios erupted from the water, a dead whale clasped in his jaws. Greedily, the rat beast choked down his prey, enjoying every bit of his meal. Food was growing scarce here, he realized. Soon he would have to search out new hunting grounds, perhaps on the shores of the Japan that he had scouted out some time back.

Within himself, Deutalios could feel something. Two beings, each baring some kinship with himself, had appeared. One, though he lacked the ability to rationalize it, he could sense was his sister being. The other, more powerful force he sensed was his dark father, Godzilla. Part of him wanted to seek these beings out and perhaps consume them, but a greater part of him feared them, especially the powerful Godzilla. Instinct told him to stay away from his kin, and avoid them he would.

With a ghastly hiss Deutalios plunged beneath the waves, diving deep into the depths of the Japan Trench. He would reside there for now, consuming whatever he might find in his wonderful feeding grounds before seeking to satisfy his gluttonous appetite elsewhere. As for his dark sister and father, he’d leave the land to them for the moment and let them seek one another out. Then Deutalios would scavenge on the corpses of his kin.

    Chapter V

Godzilla waded knee-deep into the waters of Lake Ashino. Looming before him, the horrific yet strangely beautiful Biollante wailed into the night sky, its countless tentacles churning the waters of the lake. The King of the Monsters roared back, the cries of the two dark kin shattering the peace of the night. Around the lake, a small group of soldiers had gathered to watch the conflict, hoping to see the end of both monsters. Unknown to them, two civilians stood in the nearby forest, watching with baited breath.

Dr. Shirigami and Megumi stood side by side, both truly frightened at what they were seeing. Neither knew which might prove the victor in this struggle. Both Godzilla and Biollante were incredibly fierce and powerful. Megumi and Shirigami had witnessed Biollante’s viciousness first hand, and were still somewhat swayed by it that the plant monster might prove the victor. But considering all the horrible things Godzilla had done, considering how strong he was, considering how much power was housed in his awesome body, neither could allow themselves to entertain the idea for long.

Godzilla sneered at the giant rose as it wailed. This thing, whatever it was, somehow bore kinship to him. As such, he could sense the thing’s emotions in a way he could not have done so with another foe. This strange thing cried out in agony, beckoned for an end to confusion, and yet screamed at him in hatred. It was an unnatural thing; something so unreal and disgusting that Godzilla himself found it loathing. He roared again, announcing to the abomination that its hour had come and now it would die by fire, leaving Godzilla free of his dark daughter.

Biollante could neither see nor hear nor smell Godzilla, lacking the senses to do any of these things. Instead, her extrasensory perception allowed her to divine her adversary from her surroundings in the dark world she had been imprisoned in. She hated Godzilla, her dark father whose essence had turned her into a demon. She could feel his power in every one of her cells that bore so much similarity to his own. As her tentacles slithered slowly through the waters of the lake towards the great Godzilla, she vowed that she would destroy him and let her pain die with him.

Godzilla roared as two tentacles shot from the surface of the lake, locking hold of both his wrists and pulling him down into the water. The titan struggled as more tentacles wrapped about his body beneath the surface of the water, dragging him ever closer to his foe. Summoning all his strength he managed to rise, tentacles biting at his wrists and wrapped around his mouth, throat, and leg. The dorsal plates on Godzilla’s back glowed with a fiery blue light as blue fire gathered behind his teeth, the incredible heat burning away at the hissing tentacle wrapped around his maw. Godzilla’s atomic breath lashed out, tearing the tentacles that had attacked him in half and causing Biollante to wail as they snapped back like flaming whips. Godzilla’s claws tore the remains of the tentacles from his body as he roared at his dark daughter. It would take more than that to overcome the King of the Monsters.

Two more tentacles shot up from the water and opened their fanged mouths, sending jets of glowing green sap that burned like acid at Godzilla’s face. Godzilla roared in pain as the acid burned at his thick hide, then lashed back with tooth and claw, tearing the two tentacles apart. Slowly, the monster king staggered, surprised and somewhat daunted by the sudden, unforeseen assault. Then, as he stared out at Biollante through blazing eyes, more tentacles lashed out at him.

Godzilla reacted immediately. Fire flew from his mouth as soon as the light had shown on his dorsal plates, burning away at the tentacles that flew through the air at him and striking Biollante’s great, green stalk. The plant monster wailed in agony as the fires rose up about her, the hideous scream coming from the human soul within causing Megumi to cry in horror and sickening even the dark god himself. Again Godzilla lashed out with his atomic breath, this blast striking the great rose atop the monster’s stalk and causing it to burst into flames. Biollante’s wail ceased, but the psychic scream grew only worse for those that could hear it. Again Godzilla fired, this time allowing the hellfire to travel from the top of the stalk to its base, completely consuming Biollante in flames and slowly silencing the horrible scream in the holocaust.

“Erika!” Shirigami cried as tears fell from his eyes, the glow of the enormous fire illuminating his face. “Erika! No! Oh God, Erika!”

Megumi could take no more. The screams were so horrific, the sight so sickening, the reality of it all so maddening. Slowly, she closed her eyes and fell to the side, giving in to blackness once more.

Godzilla roared in triumph as the fire consumed what little was left of Biollante. The screams had ceased now, his revulsion vanishing as they did. He didn’t understand why the abomination had sickened him so much, nor did he care. All he knew was that it had stirred an awful, alien sensation within him and now he had disposed of it.

But there was another that needed to be dealt with. Godzilla could feel the revolting Deutalios within himself just as he had sensed Biollante. Again a sickening feeling passed over Godzilla, quickly turning into the emotion Godzilla knew best: rage. He would seek his other dark child out and tear him limb from limb, then these disgusting feelings would be gone.

Godzilla turned and began to make his way towards the sea. He would hunt down Deutalios and kill him there, and then Godzilla would be without rivalry once more. However, as Godzilla left Lake Ashino and the burning remains of Biollante, he failed to notice something churning in the water as it dug down deep into the lakebed. It would take Biollante time to regenerate her body, but when she did she would be even stronger than before. Until then, her roots would lie deep underground, waiting for a second battle with Godzilla.

    ***

Katagiri sat across the desk from Akane Ishigaki, who stared back at him over her glasses. Ishigaki did not just suspect why Katagiri had come; she knew. He had divined the secret of Deutalios, somehow, and had come to confront her personally. However, the situation was not so grim, she thought. He was only a man, after all. Surly there was something that could be done to persuade him.

“I suppose you might as well confess now.” Katagiri said triumphantly. “I’ve worked hard to make sure that I found evidence that pointed back to you.”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Ishigaki replied sweetly. Her blouse was unbuttoned at the top, just enough for Katagiri to see her cleavage. She was flaunting herself at him, looking at him seductively, trying to throw him off the trail. Within himself, Katagiri smiled. The temptation was there, and he savored every minute of it, but he was just as good at this little game as Ishigaki was. If she wanted to play, he’d play.

“Stop acting coy.” he replied confidently. “You created the sea monster and released him for your own gain. My only question at this point is what you ought to be charged with.”

“You sound so sure of yourself.” Ishigaki hissed. “Prove it why don’t you.”

“Gladly.” he retorted. “One of your scientists famous for his work with G-Cells lived on the shore of Lake Ashino, where the plant monster appeared. When we entered Dr. Shirigami’s house, we found a particularly disturbing scene. The house had a gaping hole in the wall, as if something had escaped from within it. Inside we found human remains, apparently the result of the monster’s feeding.”

Ishigaki remained stoic. Silently she wondered whether Dr. Shirigami and the reporter had been victims of Shirigami’s creation, along with her henchmen.

“From there it was easy to make the assumption that the other monster was the result of science gone mad as well, especially since the creature’s dorsal plates resemble Godzilla’s, hinting at their kinship. All we had to do was a little digging and we found numerous witnesses willing to talk for protection. You created the monster Deutalios and then released him on your own country. You ought to hang as a traitor.”

“Katagiri, you surprise even me.” Ishigaki said calmly. “I can see why the Prime Minister keeps you in the government, even if she does have a distaste for your arrogance.”

Katagiri’s lip curled slightly, but he said nothing.

“I suppose you plan on arresting me; letting me die a traitor’s death. But don’t be so hasty. I have a proposition to make.”

“You have my attention.” Katagiri replied coldly.

“During our research on G-Cells we discovered the key to Godzilla’s power.” Ishigaki explained.

“Nuclear energy.” Katagiri scoffed. “That’s no secret.”

“Precisely. But what is a secret is that we’ve created a bacterium that will attack radioactive material, including G-Cells. ANEB, Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, is what I’m offering you. As far as we know, it may be the only thing that could kill Godzilla.”

Katagiri was stunned. He had not expected this kind of offer from Ishigaki. She was giving him a way to kill Godzilla; a way of ridding Japan of a menace that not even the fires of Mt. Fuji had been able to destroy.

    “And the price?” he asked.

“Turn a blind eye to everything we have done and everything that must be done to protect this company and it is yours.” Ishigaki replied. “Think about it Katagiri. You’d be the man who killed Godzilla. They might even make you Prime Minister some day because of it.”

Katagiri sat there, staring back at the cold and evil Akane Ishigaki, considering the possibilities.

    ***

It’s still alive. It’s moving. Dark. Cold. Moving quickly. It wants to burn, destroy, kill; just like him. She’s driving it. Fading fast. Pushing it to destroy that which must be destroyed. Sendai.

Megumi awoke in a hospital bed, with Dr. Shirigami sitting at her side. Standing across the room was another man, one she didn’t know. Like Shirigami, he was an older man, but his figure was rounder, his calm face hid behind thick glasses. He studied her silently, giving no indication as to what he knew or what he thought.

“You’re awake!” Shirigami exclaimed, smiling for the first time in far too long. “Are you feeling okay?”

Megumi nodded, then looked to the stranger across the room.

“Oh,” Shirigami said, “this is an old friend, Dr. Ryudo Minami.”

“Pleased to meet you Mrs. Kobayashi.” Dr. Minami said as he stepped forward. “Genichiro has told me many good things about you.”

    “Thank you.” Megumi replied.

There was a silence that settled over the room, none of them quite knowing where to begin now. Finally, Dr. Minami spoke.

“Genichiro has told me of Erika’s fate, and all about Biollante; Project Chimera; Deutalios; everything.” he said. “He also told me of your remarkable power. Forgive me, I must be direct, but Godzilla and Deutalios both are still alive and may attack again soon. Thousands, perhaps even millions, could depend on you. We need your help now Mrs. Kobayashi. If there is anything you could tell us, please do so.”

Megumi was silent for a moment, thinking over what she must say.

“Biollante is still alive.” she finally said. “It’s headed for Sendai.”

“What!” Shirigami gasped. “Impossible! Godzilla incinerated Biollante!”

“If Biollante truly bears kinship to Godzilla,” Minami said, “we may have to destroy every single one of its cells in order to kill it.”

Shirigami looked away, his face showing the great sadness that had never left him once more. If Biollante died, then so did Erika.

“Erika is still inside Biollante, somewhere.” Megumi told him. “She’s fading fast, but I can still sense her. She’s the one driving Biollante to Sendai. Why?”

Shirigami looked thoughtful for a moment before responding. “You should already know the answer, Megumi. Sendai is where Gen-Tech Tower is located, as well as Akane Ishigaki.”

“Erika’s spirit must want to destroy the tower and those inside of it in order to keep more monsters from being made.” Dr. Minami observed. “If she is losing control over the monster, she must be trying to put its power to good use before she does.”

“My daughter.” Shirigami sighed. “What have I done to her?”

“You tried to play God.” Dr. Minami said, his voice low and threatening. “You did what mankind has no right to do and your daughter has paid the price for it.”

“I did what I did to save my daughter’s life!” Shirigami roared, tears in his eyes.

“You did what you did because you couldn’t let go!”

“Damn it Ryudo, I had no choice!”

“You had a choice and you made it! Your daughter is the one who had no choice!”

“Are you mad?” Megumi spat at Dr. Minami. “He was trying to save Erika! He used the G-Cells to treat her sickness! How could you say such horrible things?”

Minami stared at her for a brief second, suddenly realizing something. “He hasn’t told you the full truth yet.” he said softly as he turned to Shirigami. “Tell her Genichiro. Tell her what you really did.”

    “Ryudo…”

“Tell her Genichiro or I will. The truth has to me told.”

Shirigami looked to Megumi, a lump gathering in his throat. “I didn’t use the G-Cells to heal Erika.”

    He paused, summoning his strength.

“My daughter died!” he cried, tears flowing from his eyes. “I resurrected her!”

    ***

Captain Akio Nishimura paced about the interior of the sub, watching as his men performed their duties with excellence. He and his crew were serving on one of several J.S.D.F. subs that had been searching for the hideous monster that now held their nation captive. Apparently, things in Japan had gone from bad to worse. Not only had another monster appeared, but Godzilla himself had returned and was now headed out to sea. Thus the submarines had been ordered to return to port immediately. This was proving easier said than done however, as Captain Nishimura and his crew had been farther away from land than any of the other subs. Now though, they were nearly home, and then they could all put a nerve-wracking trip behind them.

Suddenly something appeared on the sonar, something large. The young man monitoring the sonar, Shigeru Sahara, gasped in horror as his mind came to grasp the magnitude of the situation. A monster was heading for them, either the sea monster or perhaps even Godzilla himself.

“Captain!” Shigeru shouted. “There’s something headed right for us!”

“What is it?” Captain Nishimura responded, growing tense along with the rest of the crew.

“It’s definitely one of the monsters!” Shigeru replied. “It’s way too big to be anything else!”

“Quick!” the Captain ordered, “Take evasive maneuvers!”

“There’s no time!” Shigeru cried. “It’s moving too fast!”

Suddenly the massive creature slammed into the sub, causing everyone inside to lose their balance. Outside the sub, Deutalios was clawing at the metallic hull, gnawing away with his fangs as his acidic saliva ate away at his new found prey. At long last Deutalios had found a meal worthy of his attention. He would fill his belly with the flesh of this strange sea creature, then move on to other hunting grounds.

Water was rushing into the sub, threatening to drown the screaming men inside. Captain Nishimura held on for dear life, quietly embracing death as he thought a soldier should. Shigeru was slammed against the sonar screen, sea water washing over him as the sub began to sink. Then, as his face pressed against the screen, he saw another object, a larger object, speeding toward them. His heart was racing even faster now; impossibly fast. There was only one thing the larger object could be, and he knew exactly what it was.

The water churned as the great bulk of Godzilla slammed into Deutalios; the leviathan’s jaws sinking deep into the abomination’s side. Deutalios shrieked in fear and agony, the blood of the foul creature turning the water red as Godzilla tore him off of his prey and began to drag him down into the depths.

“Captain!” Shigeru shouted. “It’s Godzilla! He’s pulled the monster off of us!”

Captain Nishimura and the rest of his crew were stunned, the reality of being saved, if only by some twist of fate, by Godzilla himself being almost too amazing to comprehend.

“Get us to the surface!” Nishimura finally ordered. “We’ll let Godzilla finish up here.”

Deutalios struggled as Godzilla’s jaws locked onto him even tighter, his claws digging deep into the rat monster’s flesh. Godzilla’s dark child clawed at his attacker, struggling desperately to free himself but finding it impossible to pierce his attacker’s skin. Deutalios’ head snapped around, his fanged-jaws latching onto Godzilla’s face. The King of the Monsters roared as the acidic saliva burned him, forcing him to relinquish his opponent. Deutalios hissed gleefully as Godzilla pulled away from him, shooting through the water like a great seal or sea otter might. But Godzilla was far from finished.

Anger gathered within Godzilla’s eyes as he watched Deutalios attempt to flee. His maw parted, his dorsal plates glowing as atomic fire gathered in the back of his throat. Godzilla’s atomic breath tore through the water, striking Deutalios and causing the monster to writhe and cry in pain as he sank towards the ocean floor. Godzilla watched for a moment, letting his opponent recover enough strength to attempt to flee again before engaging in pursuit, swimming like a massive crocodile after his dark child.

    Chapter VI

The people of Yokohama watched in shock and horror as the bright blue fire shot straight from the bay into the sky. As the fire flew upwards and the surf boiled and churned the monstrous form of Deutalios leapt from the sea, landing in the Minato Mirai district of the city. The rat-thing ignored the screaming food-things that surrounded him, trampling over them without care. The predator was coming. It was right behind him. The deep slashes and painful burns that marked his body were evidence of it. His wounds would heal however. Already, the dark gift passed from Godzilla to himself was insuring that. He needed time though. He had to escape and heal his wounds. Then he could confront his dark father and feast upon his flesh.

Godzilla erupted from the bay with a mighty roar, squinting as the sun met his eyes. The rat-thing had escaped into the city, he realized. He could hear the screams of the people coming from within it, but they were of no concern to him. All he wanted now was to snatch Deutalios up in his claws and rip the life from his body.

The atomic dinosaur made his way into the city, roaring his challenge to his dark spawn as the people panicked and fled from before him. Suddenly Deutalios leapt from the shadow of a skyscraper, colliding with the great Godzilla and knocking him off his feet. The rat-fiend clawed and snapped at Godzilla’s hide, his acid spit foaming from his mouth as he gnawed on Godzilla’s shoulder, desperately trying to inflict a wound.

Godzilla roared in fury as the vermin mauled him. His head turned, allowing the his fiery eyes to rest on his hell-spawn’s frame for a moment before nuclear fire spewed from his jaws, striking Deutalios and sending the screaming mutant flying backwards.

Godzilla rose, slowly, ominously. Deutalios wasted no time scampering away, back behind the skyscrapers. The King of the Monsters recognized his game. The fiend planned to lure him into the city then attack him from behind. Godzilla, however, had other plans.

Godzilla unleashed another blast of his atomic breath, the hell fire tearing through the city after the horrific Deutalios. The vile chimera immediately leapt from its hiding place, colliding with Godzilla again and sending the two rolling into the shadow of the Landmark Tower, the tallest building in Japan. The two rose together, Deutalios latched firmly onto Godzilla’s hand, acidic saliva working hard to burn away at skin that had not been scarred by the magma of Mt. Fuji. Godzilla roared down at his foe, striking the rodent creature’s face with his free claw, leaving deep gashes in its muzzle as he did. Then, with awesome strength, Godzilla lifted Deutalios into the air with one hand then threw him the length of a city block, sending him crashing to the city street.

Deutalios quickly regained his footing and leapt at his dark father once more. Godzilla didn’t even move, or flinch, or blink. Instead the titan turned and lashed out with tail, striking Deutalios hard and breaking several of the screaming monster’s ribs before bringing him crashing down at the foot of the Landmark Tower that loomed several hundred meters above the two monsters. Then, as the stunned Deutalios watched in horror, Godzilla tilted his head back and fired his atomic breath into the mid-section of the enormous structure, bringing the building crashing down on the vermin and killing everyone inside.

Godzilla waited for a moment, watching the massive pile of rubble that lay in front of him. All grew silent in Yokohama, deathly silent. Then, as Godzilla saw no sign of life within the heap, he tilted his head back and roared to heaven, proclaiming victory.

Suddenly Deutalios leapt from the rubble, his fangs set to sink into Godzilla’s throat. But Godzilla was too quick. He caught the monster in his claws, holding him close as he dug into his flesh, letting Deutalios scream in pain as he looked into the eyes of fire that were his dark father’s. Then, without any sign of pity, Godzilla sank his fangs into his dark spawn’s throat.

Deutalios screamed even louder as his foul blood gushed from the massive wound his dark father was inflicting. Then, as Godzilla’s fangs tore through his flesh the scream became a desperate hiss and then a helpless gurgle. Godzilla mercilessly cast Deutalios aside, letting the ailing monster stare up at him from the street; letting the mutant’s eyes behold the horrible visage of Godzilla with his flaming eyes and mouth red with blood. Deutalios watched in horror as Godzilla’s dorsal plates glowed with the ominous light that always signaled death. He struggled to move, trying to summon the strength to lift himself up and scamper away as fire gathered in the back of Godzilla’s throat. Then the flames gushed forth, and Deutalios was consumed in an enormous explosion.

Godzilla roared in triumph as the fires destroyed every trace of Deutalios. Then, slowly, the monster king turned, facing northward. He could sense now what he could not sense before. Biollante was still alive. He could sense her, moving underground, growing in both size and power. Again he roared as he stomped forward, ignoring the screaming people of Yokohama. He would do now what he had failed to do at Lake Ashino. He would destroy his dark daughter, once and for all.

    ***

Megumi and Dr. Shirigami sat in traffic in the middle of Sendai, not far from the Gen-Tech headquarters. Both of them realized the danger they were in. Biollante was coming, moving quickly underground towards the Gen-Tech building, looking to destroy that which had lead to its horrific genesis.

“You know you don’t have to be here.” Shirigami said, sighing deeply. “This is all my fault. I have to be here. It’s my responsibility, not yours.”

“I’m afraid I’m in a little too deep.” Megumi replied, as she tapped the steering wheel in frustration with the traffic. “You know what we’re doing could qualify us as insanity.”

“I’m well aware of that.” he replied with a slight smirk. “But Erika recognized my voice. If I can reach her I can convince her to stop all of this.”

It dawned on Megumi that Dr. Shirigami was not separating what had been his daughter from his monstrous creation. There was no way of convincing him, she realized, that his daughter truly was dead in the belly of the beast.

Suddenly a vision flashed before Megumi’s eyes, causing her to gasp in horror.

    “What’s wrong?” Shirigami asked.

    “It’s here.”

Suddenly the earth began to tremble. All about them they could hear people screaming, presuming that they were facing an earthquake. Before them they could see buildings collapsing, clouds of debris rising high as they did. Then, for one horrible moment, all was still.

Suddenly fanged tentacles tore out from beneath the city streets, snapping several of the screaming citizens of Sendai off the streets as the populace’s panic grew even greater. Megumi and Shirigami watched in horror, their mouths gaping and eyes wide at the horror of it all. Then, the earth shook once more.

The massive form of Biollante exploded from beneath the ground, a titanic wail accompanying the abomination’s arrival. Shirigami and Megumi could not believe their eyes. Godzilla’s radiation had fed the already unstable cells of the plant monster, working like a bizarre fertilizer to further her growth and mutation. The loathsome thing was far larger than its previous incarnation, and far more horrifying. Gone were the great green stalk and strangely beautiful rose of its previous carnation. In their place was a great mass of vegetation mixed with flesh, dark-green-blue in color and slimy and loathsome. Visible behind the slimy vines was a massive, pulsing organ like a heart or a stomach, green sap oozing down its sides. Atop the great mass a huge pair of crocodilian jaws jutted into the sky, parting to reveal enormous fangs as they wailed. The great red eyes of Biollante shown with rage and hatred, an ominous visage of death for all who saw.

“Dear God!” Megumi gasped as the screaming people of Sendai stampeded past the car she was driving. “It’s almost as if Godzilla’s malevolence has taken over it.”

“Erika,” Shirigami whispered, “what have you become?”

    ***

From her office in Gen-Tech headquarters, Akane Ishigaki turned her chair around to view the unfolding chaos on the streets of Sendai. Slowly, she poured herself a glass of red wine, then sat the bottle on her desk as she got up and walked to the window to behold the terrifying monster causing hell before her.

“My, my, my. Aren’t you pretty.” Ishigaki said to the monster. “You must be Shirigami’s creation. You certainly look as if you were crafted by his expertise.”

She sipped her wine, watching as Biollante wailed and its vines snapped more people off the streets to consume them, bringing buildings crashing to the ground as they whipped through them. None of it phased her. She stood there, cold and calculating, considering what many might consider to be a nightmare from hell with indifference.

“But why have you come to Sendai?” she mused. “Oh my. Have you come to kill me? That’s the only reason you could have come all the way here, barring a coincidence. But I don’t believe in coincidences.”

She paused, thinking for a moment.

“If you’re here, then Godzilla must be on his way.”

A wicked smile spread across her face as she pictured the great Godzilla dead at her feet, his remarkable body hers to cut and claim in the name of science, and of course profit.

“Please be sure he’s quite weakened before he kills you.” she cooed. “That way he won’t have far to run when they deploy our little weapon against him.”

    ***

Godzilla charged forward with a pace unparalleled, ignoring the shells of the tanks, the missiles from the jets and missile launchers, and lasers from the maser cannons. The whole Japanese countryside seemed to shake as Godzilla charged, roaring like an angry god of thunder. Nothing could stop him from his destination; absolutely nothing.

Godzilla didn’t retaliate against the puny military force that had gathered to defy him in a vain attempt to control his rampage. Instead he merely charged through them, trampling the weapons that could not escape his path in time. The juggernaut moved with purpose now, a determination unrivaled. Even the soldiers on the battlefield could see the difference in Godzilla, finding the saurian’s ferocity directed away from them, focused on something far beyond the battlefield.

Godzilla could feel it within himself, as if something revolting was slithering through every fiber of his being. His dark daughter was calling to him. He could sense her, stronger and far more terrible than before. She disgusted him; the entire unnaturalness of her being driving Godzilla to hate this thing connected to himself. Godzilla’s roars grew louder as he advanced north towards Sendai, determined that he would completely destroy his disgusting rival that beckoned to him now.

    ***

Prime Minister Nagamine sat in the situation room, tense and stressed yet somehow giving the impression of unparalleled endurance and strength. Her national security team surrounded her, keeping her informed of every development of their perilous situation and ready to act on each and every order.

“How bad is the situation in Yokohama?” she asked to no one in particular.

“Horrible.” Katagiri replied. “Godzilla and the sea monster caused all kinds of damage in the Minato Mirai district, even demolishing the Landmark Tower. Thousands, if not millions, may have been exposed to the R-Virus thanks to the rodent-like creature. Sadly though, Godzilla seems to have built up an immunity.”

    “Where’s Godzilla headed?” she asked

    “Where else?” Katagiri responded. “Sendai.”

“He’s headed for this strange, fourth monster isn’t he.” Nagamine sighed. “There’s going to be another battle in Sendai then. I’m presuming evacuations are already underway?”

“Of course.” Katagiri replied. “We’re having trouble evacuating the area where this new creature is currently located however. Its tentacles keep attacking our personnel, either devouring them or spraying them with some sort of acid.”

“It’s not a new monster.” Dr. Minami said as he strode into the room and sat down, as if his absence had been of no importance.

“What do you mean Dr. Minami?” Nagamine asked, too intrigued to worry about the professor’s tardiness or Katagiri stewing in his seat.

“It’s the plant monster that appeared at Lake Ashino, Biollante. It’s mutated into a more terrifying form and has been travelling underground to destroy the Gen-Tech headquarters.”

“How do you know all this?” Katagiri growled.

“If you’ll recall I used to work for Gen-Tech.” Dr. Minami replied, not even giving Katagiri the honor of a glance. “I have my sources. The sea monster that attacked the base was also created by Gen-Tech. Its name is, or perhaps it’s better to say was, Deutalios, a monster created from Godzilla’s cells. They released him to spread the R-Virus, thus giving them a chance to profit from the ensuing chaos.”

He paused, trying to decide how much he should tell of Biollante’s sinister origins. “Biollante, on the other hand, seems to have been a complete accident.” he lied.

“You’re certain of all this?” Nagamine asked.

    “Absolutely.”

“Gen-Tech just delivered us a weapon to use against Godzilla.” Nagamine sighed. “They must have been working for leverage of some sort.”

“It certainly seems like it.” Katagiri lied, “I’ll be sure to begin an investigation as soon as this crisis is over.”

“What, if I may ask, is this weapon?” Dr. Minami inquired.

“Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria.” General Honda replied. “We’re planning on using it against Godzilla as soon as he’s eliminated the other creature…Biollante. It will drain Godzilla of his power, eventually killing him. Or at least, that’s the hope.”

“Surely there must be another way.” Dr. Fukuda protested.

    “Not this again.” Katagiri snarled.

For once, the Prime Minister did not silence Katagiri. Instead she turned to Dr. Fukuda, and stared at him silently while she waited for him to make his case.

“Madame Prime Minister, please,” Dr. Fukuda began, “I implore you to think of all the things we could learn from Godzilla. Dr. Minami could probably fill volumes with what might come of more research of Godzilla’s cells alone.”

“Do you honestly believe that the monster should be studied rather than destroyed?” Secretary Shigezawa asked.

“I honestly believe that we clearly can’t destroy him.” Dr. Fukuda replied. “But I do think that we can find a way to contain Godzilla, to keep him from attacking Japan. Surely a man of your intellect must agree with me, Secretary Shigezawa.”

Shigezawa said nothing. Instead, Katagiri responded.

“I think this is ridiculous that we are discussing preserving a monster responsible for the deaths of countless Japanese citizens.” the politician snarled. “Godzilla has to die, there’s no way around that. Stop dreaming Dr. Fukuda, for all our sakes.”

Dr. Fukuda looked away, crestfallen. Nagamine looked on him, feeling great compassion for him but deciding within herself that he was perhaps too idealistic for his own good.

“Dr. Fukuda,” she said softly, “Godzilla’s cells have been studied and all that came from it were two new, horrible monsters. I would like to say that there could be a way to contain Godzilla, to keep him at bay while we study him and use the knowledge we could gain for the betterment of all mankind. However, that is completely impossible.”

She paused, letting her words have their effect on everyone, not just Dr. Fukuda.

“You are correct that we must learn from Godzilla.” she continued. “Human beings created Godzilla through our own foolishness, and now it seems that humans have once again played God and created more monsters. If we are to find redemption, we must do it by destroying these monsters and insuring that no city ever has to suffer from the destruction they bring. If we are to learn anything from them, it is that we are not God and should not play God. Do you understand?”

Dr. Fukuda nodded, but could not look the Prime Minister in the eye.

“Madame Prime Minister,” General Honda interjected, “what course of action do you think we should take.”

Nagamine thought for a moment, making her decision carefully. “Quarantine the Minato Mirai district.” she ordered. “Make sure all the survivors are given AMVE to counter the R-Virus. Evacuate Sendai to the best of our ability, and clear Godzilla’s path for him. We’ll let Godzilla contend with Biollante, and then we’ll attack him with the bacterium.”

She paused, looking around the room at everyone gathered before her. All of them were silent, listening to the Prime Minister intently, fully aware that human lives depended on every word that fell from her lips.

“I want us to finish this now.” Nagamine said. “We kill Godzilla in Sendai, and this time we make sure he dies.”

    Chapter VII

Biollante wailed to the night sky as her tentacles ravaged the city of Sendai, smashing through buildings and tearing through asphalt and concrete as they snapped people up like hungry eels. Like thorny snakes they slithered through the city, searching for what Biollante had come for. There was something here she hated, she realized. She no longer remembered what, but she’d destroy it none the less.

Dr. Shirigami and Megumi stood side by side in the street, staring up at the awesome monster that Shirigami had created. Neither could believe how horrible Biollante had become. She stood before them, bulbous and menacing as she howled into the darkness; the ultimate Frankenstein’s monster. Then, slowly, Genichiro Shirigami began to walk toward her.

“Are you mad!” Megumi gasped as she grabbed him by his arm. “You’ll get yourself killed!”

“Leave me alone!” Shirigami spat, jerking his arm away as he turned and stared at her, tears in his eyes. “Don’t you see, this is all my fault. I turned my daughter into…into this thing! I did it unintentionally, true, but I did it none the less. If I can still reach her, I must try!”

He paused, looking at Megumi for a long time.

“Ryudo was right.” he said to the young woman as the city burned and crumbled around them. “I should not have done what I did. Science can not proceed forward blindly, heedless of consequences and ethics. When we do such, we create monsters, like Godzilla and Biollante.”

Again he paused, looking now to the wailing monster that was tearing the screaming city of Sendai apart. He considered it, this terrifying thing of his own creation, the creature that had been born from his daughter’s flesh. Then, he turned and looked to Megumi once again.

“Go and tell the world what you have seen and learned.” He said. “Tell them everything. The entire world has to know the mistakes I’ve made so that mankind will never repeat them.”

She stared at him, the city trembling all about her as Biollante’s wails grew louder. Now tears were gathering in her eyes. She couldn’t leave him, she thought. She couldn’t abandon him to whatever fate he might meet.

“Go!” Dr. Shirigami shouted. Then, as Megumi finally turned and fled, Genichiro Shirigami turned and began to walk further into hell, toward the wailing, snapping demon that beckoned to him.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” He said.

A thorny tentacle lashed through a building, bringing it toppling over onto the streets.

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters.”

Two tentacles ripped up through the streets, hissing like evil cobras as they twisted high into the air.

“He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

A group of soldiers appeared from a back alley, firing their machine guns at Biollante’s tentacles as they tried to flee from her wrath. The tentacles struck out, snapping up two of them and batting the others aside like toys.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.”

A few people tried to flee a crumbling building, only to be covered in acid, their dying screams playing in Shirigami’s ears as he walked on.

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over.”

Somewhere behind him a gas mane exploded as another tentacle tore up through the streets, flames spreading as it did.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” He paused, staring up at the hideous visage of Biollante that loomed over him. “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Suddenly a fang tentacle lashed out and snapped him up in its leafy-jaws. Dr. Shirigami screamed as it lifted him high into the air, holding him just tightly enough to prevent his escape as it lifted him higher and higher. Then, Shirigami found himself staring into the eyes of Biollante.

For a moment he was too stunned even to think. The horrible eyes that leered back at him behind the massive, snarling, crocodilian jaws appeared at once lifeless and full of fiery rage. The unnatural thing that now held him in its grasp had once been his daughter, he realized. This was what she had become, all thanks to him.

“Erika!” he pleaded. “Erika please! I’m sorry! This is all my fault!”

Tears streamed down his face as he stared up at the monster. Biollante stared back, menacing and unmoving.

“I’m so sorry Erika! I know you’re still in there, somewhere! Look around you Erika! Look at the fires! There are people dying in them Erika!”

For a moment Shirigami thought he might have touched something within the monster. He couldn’t be sure, but he hoped he had.

“Erika you have to stop this! I’ll find a way, I promise. I’ll find a way to change everything! I’ll change everything back to the way it was before! Please Erika! If you can hear me, please stop this madness!”

Biollante wailed again, louder and more horrible than ever before. Its jaws shut with tremendous force, sounding like thunder when they did. Then it stared down at Dr. Shirigami, forcing him to realize that his daughter was no more.

“I’m so sorry Erika.” he sobbed.

Biollante’s tendril snapped like a whip, sending Shirigami flying through the air with a scream. His flight ended shortly, ending with him crashing through a glass window and coming to lie in a crumpled heap in an abandoned apartment. Slowly, darkness slipped over Dr. Shirigami as he listened to the triumphant wail of the abomination Biollante. Then, just before life left him, another terrible sound reached his ears. Godzilla had come.

    ***

Megumi ran as hard and fast as she could, trying desperately to get out of the seemingly endless reach of Biollante’s tentacles. As the mutant wailed behind her, she wondered what had happened to Dr. Shirigame, hoping against hope that the monster had spared him its wrath. It was then that she heard that horrible sound.

Megumi looked up in fright, knowing all too well the sound of Japan’s scourge. Godzilla stood on the street before her, his malevolent gaze locked on the massive abomination that bore his DNA. Megumi turned, watching as Biollante wailed and snapped her jaws menacingly at her dark father. She stood between them, watching in awe as the two mammoth beasts threatened one another, each daring the other to strike the first blow.

From her office in the Gen-Tech building, Akane Ishigaki watched the unfolding events with interest. She eyed both monsters with a ravenous hunger in her eyes, sipping her wine slowly and looking forward to the sickening spectacle as entertainment.

“So Godzilla, you’ve come at last.” she cooed. “I was sure you would. You just can’t allow any rivals to your throne now can you.”

She paused, taking another sip of her wine as she listened to the roars and wails of the two nightmares as if she were listening to music.

“I can’t wait until I get to carve you up.” she said, her voice filled with venom. “I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. You eluded my grasp three years ago in Tokyo, but now it seems as if someone up there has smiled on me. Soon enough, the military will have injected you with the ANEB, and then you’ll be mine for the taking.”

    ***

Godzilla roared and stomped forward determined that this time he would not merely be content to incinerate his opponent, vowing instead to tear her to pieces. Megumi had just enough time to dart down an alleyway. From there she watched as the enormous reptile charged past, holding her ears at the sound of his deafening roar. She could feel enormous rage, as if the air had turned to fire around her, coming from the two foes. For a moment she grew even more worried about Dr. Shirigami. Then a vision flashed before her eyes, and she saw him lying dead before her. She began to weep, but still managed to force herself to look around the corner, determined to see the battle that was about to unfold.

Biollante wailed as Godzilla charged. The ******* child of science had been hoping for this moment. Godzilla had caused her much pain in their previous encounter and managed to burn away her entire body, except her roots. But his radiation had fed her, breathing new life into her cells that had caused her to grow and change. Finally she had been able to push the sweet little voice from her mind and take full control. Now she intended to repay her dark father just as she had her earthly father. Then, once she had destroyed him and this city all those that had brought her into this world of pain and confusion would have known her wrath and her quest for vengeance would be satisfied.

Two of Biollante’s fanged tentacles shot out, hissing wickedly at their target. Godzilla sneered, contemptuous of the futile assault. Atomic fire gushed forth, burning the tentacles and enabling Godzilla to continue his charge.

Thorn-covered tentacles tore up from the streets, wrapping around the great Godzilla like enormous ropes. Godzilla roared, digging his feet into the street as they drug him forward. Biollante wailed in satisfaction at the sight of her struggling dark father. If he wanted to come to her, she intended to assist him in the act. The hideous mutant sent two more tentacles flying toward Godzilla. One sunk its fangs into Godzilla’s hand, struggling to gnaw through the monster king’s thick skin. The other hovered before Godzilla’s face before spewing acid at the saurian’s eyes. Godzilla howled in pain, fighting back with tooth and claw as he managed to tear himself free of the tentacles before lunging forward and catching the tendril that had sprayed him in his jaws. With a great snap Godzilla’s fangs shredded the appendage, and then his jaws parted to allow it to fall to his feet. Godzilla roared, his mouth covered in Biollante’s sap as he dared his dark daughter to try again.

Biollante wailed once more, answering Godzilla’s challenge. With tremendous speed her four great, root-like legs tore from the ground beneath her, sending the hybrid monster charging toward her opponent with horrifying speed. As she charged, Biollante’s great bulk caused the buildings of Sendai in her path to crumble and collapse. The few survivors of her wrath tried to flee but ultimately all found death as she stampeded over them.

Godzilla stepped back, roaring in surprise at his opponent’s incredible charge. But the monster king would not give an inch, even to this horrifying foe that towered over him. Godzilla’s dorsal plates began to glow as his atomic breath gathered in his throat. He waited, letting Biollante come within just a short distance of him, and then fired. Biollante shrieked as the blast struck her, stopping in her tracks. Godzilla’s atomic fire burned away at her, tearing off great chunks of her body and blistering her internal organs. Godzilla roared in satisfaction, but then he found himself looking on in amazement. Biollante’s wounds healed rapidly, almost immediately. Within moments it seemed as if the monster king’s attack had done nothing at all.

Biollante’s vines lashed out, twisting together into a single thorny spear. Godzilla shrieked as the branch pierced his left hand, spilling his radioactive blood on the streets of Sendai. Biollante wailed in satisfaction, watching his her dark father pawed at the spear that had stabbed right through his flesh and bone, cutting his other hand on her thorns as he pulled it free. Godzilla turned, his hands covered in crimson blood but his wounds healing fast, glaring defiantly back at the abomination that loomed over him. Then his eyes widened. His adversary was doing something different now.

Energy was arcing toward Biollante’s closed maw. Her gaze fixed on Godzilla, promising pain and retribution for his part in her dark genesis. Then Biollante’s massive jaws parted and a tremendous spray of radioactive acid sap spewed out, drenching Godzilla. The atomic dragon shrieked as the acid covered him, searing his skin and choking him with fumes. Biollante wailed in satisfaction. But as she did Godzilla retaliated, spewing atomic fire into her open mouth and sending it flying out the back of her head.

Chunks of the strange vegetable and animal matter that composed Biollante scattered across the ruined city of Sendai. She wailed in pain, the sound being drowned out by Godzilla’s triumphant roar. But then, as Godzilla looked on in anger, the massive wound he had inflicted healed before his very eyes, and Biollante snarled back at him in fury.

Dozens of Biollante’s vines lashed out, constricting the monster king. Godzilla roared, struggling as the thorny tentacles gripped him and gnawed at him, determined to break free of their grasp. Then, in a display of incredible strength, Biollante lifted Godzilla into the air, suspending him above her. Godzilla roared in fury, looking down at Biollante with hate burning in his fiery eyes, only to see the abomination glare back at him with greater hatred. The chimera wailed, opening her mouth wide and slowly moving Godzilla toward her gaping maw. She would consume him; drown him in the acids within her and digest him and his great power. Then she would level this city and go on in peace.

Godzilla stared down Biollante’s throat in growing anger. Slowly, his dorsal plates began to glow with gathering energy, burning away at the tendrils that held him just as his atomic breath blazed forth, tearing away the entire left side of Biollante’s face. His dark daughter screamed in agony, her burning tendrils flailing about as she twisted what was left of her massive head around in unbearable pain. Godzilla fell from the air and struck the street below him with massive force, causing it to cave in and create an enormous crater. The king of the monsters did not take long to rise. He was immediately on his feet and charging towards his massive opponent, determined to tear her to shreds.

Godzilla slammed hard against Biollante’s enormous bulk. The atomic dinosaur struck with primal carnage, sinking his teeth and claws into her vine-wrapped frame. Sap like blood poured out from the massive wounds he inflicted, covering Godzilla in it. He struck out with his massive clawed foot at the massive organ that formed her pulsing core, bursting it and spilling the green fluid within on the street below him.

Biollante wailed in pain and rage, her face fully regenerated. Her regenerative powers were more than capable of healing the wounds Godzilla inflicted upon her, but the monster king’s assault was taking its toll. However, her dark father had done her a great service in delivering himself to her. Now was the time for her retribution.

Biollante’s enormous jaws snapped shut, gripping Godzilla’s head and torso tightly in them. Then, as the saurian roared within them, Biollante tilted her massive head back and lifted him from the ground. The massive jaws parted again, opening wide enough to take in the whole form of the great Godzilla, and then closed with a thunderous clap as Godzilla disappeared down her throat.

Megumi looked on in amazement and horror. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen. Godzilla had been defeated, devoured by the horrifying creation of science that wailed to the sky. Great waves of emotion rippled from Biollante’s being as she watched it. She could sense its satisfaction, its lust fulfilled. But then she sensed another feeling. The same rage and confusion that had always been in Biollante gushed forth once more, this time in a torrent like never before. Despite the fact that the mutant’s dark father was dying in its belly, the thing’s cry for revenge could not be satisfied. Biollante’s tentacles lashed out, destroying the few buildings that still stood nearby. The abomination thought that perhaps by destroying the city she might find peace, but Megumi knew that the thing would never know what peace was. Dr. Shirigami had created something that would never be able to rest. He had damned his daughter to an existence within the bowels of a beast, forever tormented.

    ***

Prime Minister Nagamine drummed her fingers on the desk nervously, waiting for the all clear from the troops fighting desperately in Sendai. The plan was simple: Get as many people evacuated as possible; try not to engage Biollante; wait for Godzilla to kill Biollante; then use the ANEB against Godzilla. However, the implementation of the plan was proving far more difficult. Biollante’s tentacles had swept the city, causing chaos as the soldiers fought back against her. Now Godzilla had arrive and Sendai itself was crumbling as the battle raged. As soon as Godzilla was victorious, the soldiers would move in for the assault. However, if none of them survived, their mission would be a failure before it could be executed.

Suddenly the intercom came to life as a voice pierced through static.

“Command!” the voice cried, “Command! Come in!”

“This is Command.” General Honda responded. “What’s going on?”

“It’s over.” the soldier in Sendai replied.

“Good, proceed with the plan.” Nagamine replied.

“You don’t understand!” the soldier gasped. “Biollante has won! It devoured Godzilla alive!”

The room was so silent that a single mosquito’s buzzing could have echoed from the walls.

“Dear God.” Nagamine sighed. “What do we do now?”

    ***

Akane Ishigaki watched the events unfolding before her coldly and analytically. She was not amazed by what she had seen, merely intrigued. Shirigami’s creature had, seemingly, overpowered the mighty Godzilla. This strange being, whatever it was, possessed strength beyond her wildest dreams. Even more important was that the creature was artificial, a man-made construct. Therefore, it could be duplicated and even improved upon.

Ishigaki licked her lips, watching as the thing wailed and struck out at the city with its tentacles, destroying what little was left of the buildings about it. “You are beautiful.” she cooed. “So beautiful. I can’t wait to dissect you and put Dr. Shirigami’s marvelous talents to use.”

    ***

Biollante wailed again as fanged tentacles lashed out at the now dead city. She was crying for peace; some sort of tranquility in her vile existence. She had hoped that by destroying her two fathers, Shirigami and Godzilla, the lost soul of Erika Shirigami might find rest at last. But the pain and confusion that dominated Biollante’s existence had not ended, and now a great emptiness had appeared in her inner being; a gaping hole created by extinguished hatred. Only by destroying the city could she find peace, she decided. But within her soul, Erika Shirigami knew that nothing but death could end her pain.

Suddenly a blast of blue fire tore through Biollante’s side, spiraling high into the air as the plant monster screamed. The enormous wound healed almost instantly, just before a second beam tore out the howling mutant’s back. Godzilla was still fighting, even within the gut of the demon itself the King of the Monsters would not give up. Another blast tore out through Biollante’s neck; a fourth burned through her chest. All the while Biollante screamed, her tentacles flailing. He was taxing her powers; even her incredible regenerative capabilities could not keep up with the tremendous assault Godzilla was unleashing within her.

Biollante opened her mouth towards heaven, wailing in agony. Then Godzilla’s atomic breath shot from her throat, burning away at her esophagus as it flew from her mouth into the night sky. Biollante attempted to wail again, only to find her vocal cords burned away, rendering her silent. The chimera’s body was shutting down, it’s phenomenal abilities beginning to fail as Godzilla’s radiation overwhelmed it at a cellular level and played havoc on its unstable molecular structure. Biollante could do nothing. All Godzilla’s dark daughter could do was close her enormous jaws, and wait for the pain to end.

Within the acids of Biollante’s stomach, Godzilla gathered his energy. The plant monster could feel him within its being, his power growing and pulsing. Then his atomic breath seared upwards and out Biollante’s neck, disintegrating the monster’s massive head as it tore towards heaven.

Biollante’s body glowed as energy surged through every cell. Her unstable structure was now mutating out of control, and as a result, breaking down. Slowly a golden mist consumed the plant monster’s hulking frame, and then began to spread about the city.

Megumi watched as the mist covered Sendai. All about the city, massive flowers bloomed in gorgeous shades of red, white, yellow, and violet. They sprouted on buildings and in the streets, on rooftops and in alleyways. Before long Sendai was a beautiful garden, or perhaps a grave covered in the flowers of a mourner. Then, as Megumi watched, a young woman with a shimmering aura appeared before her, tears in her eyes. Erika Shirigami stared at her for what seemed like an eternity, then vanished back into the mist with a sad, haunting wail that sounded like music. Then, Megumi saw the last particles that had composed Biollante’s being spiraling towards the stars, leaving the world that had spawned the monster behind.

“I’ll tell your story.” Megumi whispered. “All be sure that Shirigami’s mistakes are never repeated.”

Suddenly a terrifying roar echoed across the ruins of Sendai. Megumi turned in fright to see Godzilla emerging from the mist, his skin covered in Biollante’s acid and choking fumes rising from his frame. Godzilla roared triumphantly then turned, facing the Gen-Tech building. With great, slow strides Godzilla made his way forward. Before her passing, Biollante had used her close link to him to pass along a single thought: Destroy the building.

    ***

Akane Ishigaki sipped her wine as the building shook. Godzilla was coming closer, glaring at the Gen-Tech building with flaming eyes that would have cowed the bravest of men. Still, Akane Ishigaki stood there, accepting the inevitable.

She waited until Godzilla stood directly before her, staring right at her with those awful eyes. Like fire, she thought, as if the flames of hell itself burned behind them. Then, quickly, she drained what was left of the wine and stared back, cold and hateful as always.

“So it’s you that comes for me, Godzilla?” she asked. “I had hoped that it would be the other way around. If there are any soldiers left in the city, then I’m sure your life will end soon enough. But apparently they’re either too incompetent to stop you before you destroy this building, or they have no intention of doing so.”

Godzilla sneered at her through the window. On one level he pondered why he wanted to destroy this building alone, why this little insect was so revolting. He was unable to understand that the malice he now carried was not his own but that of another, nor did he care. All he knew was that he hated this termite mound and the wretched queen within it.

Godzilla’s roar shattered the glass between himself and Akane Ishigaki. Ishigaki threw up her arm to shield herself, the sound deafening her as the wine glass in her hand shattered, its shards cutting deep into her flesh.

“If you’re going to kill me,” Ishigaki snarled, gripping her bloody hand, “then get on with it!”

As if to answer her Godzilla threw his head back and roared again, the volume far less thunderous but a thousand times more menacing. Then atomic fire gushed from his mouth, washing over Akane Ishigaki and dissolving her into nothingness.

    Chapter VIII

The soldier’s voice cut through static again as it reached the Prime Minister.

“Godzilla’s still alive!” he gasped over the intercom. “He’s still fighting even inside Biollante’s gut! My God! Biollante’s head just exploded! Something’s happening! Biollante is…dissolving?”

The static coming from the intercom overtook the soldier’s voice, leaving everyone in the command room on the edge of their seats. Was it over? Had Biollante been defeated? Was Godzilla triumphant? Had both died?

Then the soldier’s voice was audible again.

“The city! It’s covered in flowers! Enormous flowers!”

    “Repeat that.” General Honda ordered.

“Flowers have bloomed all over Sendai!” the soldier replied. “I’ve never seen such beautiful colors! Biollante’s gone….”

Then a terrible sound came booming over the intercom. The soldier didn’t have to say what had happened. Everyone in the situation room knew what that awful sound warned.

    “Godzilla! Godzilla’s still alive!”

“What a creature!” Nagamine gasped. “Even devoured alive he still manages to overcome his opponent!”

“He’s moving!” the soldier shouted. “He’s headed for…for the Gen-Tech building! It’s not fully evacuated! There are people in there!”

The sound of an explosion roared over the intercom, followed by Godzilla’s own triumphant roar. They could hear the building shattering, and then Godzilla roared again.

“He’s destroyed the Gen-Tech building!” the soldier screamed. “Godzilla’s destroyed the Gen-Tech building!”

And that, Ishigaki, is your death., Katagiri thought to himself.

There was a silence in the room for a long moment. Then, slowly and softly, Nagamine spoke.

“Tell your men to proceed with the operation, General.” she said.

“Yes Madame Prime Minister.” General Honda replied.

“You don’t have to do this.” Dr. Fukuda protested.

Everyone turned, listening to what he had to say.

“Madame Prime Minister,” he pleaded, “there’s so much we could learn from Godzilla. If he’s studied, if we learn how to contain him or prevent his attacks, the benefits for all mankind could be enormous. Please Madame Prime Minister, I understand that…”

“I must stop you there Dr. Fukuda.” Nagamine snapped. “I have seen what has been gained from studying Godzilla. Their names were Deutalios and Biollante. Godzilla is a threat like no other Dr. Fukuda, you must realize that. It is in Japan’s best interest, in the world’s best interest, that he die.”

Dr. Fukuda looked around. Katagiri sneered at him. Dr. Minami looked back at him, stoic and unreadable. Secretary Shigezawa wouldn’t even look at him, his own way of showing that he didn’t agree. There was no hope of pursuing the argument further he realized. And so he looked down at his feet, his hope shattered and dreams seemingly destroyed.

“General,” the Prime Minister said, “give your men the order.”

    ***

Crimson beams seared away at Godzilla’s thick hide. The monster king turned, roaring a warning to his tiny adversaries to flee and leave him alone. Still the beams fired as the maser tanks pulled back, beckoning for Godzilla to come forward. The bright red beams blazed all about Godzilla, forming a cage of light around him. Godzilla roared, confused and angered by the spectacle, then let his atomic breath blaze out, engulfing the tanks and their occupants in fire.

Helicopters dove from the sky, unleashing a barrage of missiles that exploded harmlessly against Godzilla’s chest. The atomic dragon stomped forward as the helicopters coaxed him toward four tall buildings, each covered in the gorgeous flowers that Biollante’s defeat had left in its wake. Again and again atomic breath shot from Godzilla’s maw, destroying the choppers in a bath of flame.

Tanks and missile launchers surrounded Godzilla as he stood between the skyscrapers, pelting him with an endless assault of shells and missiles, none putting as much as a scratch in Godzilla’s thick hide. Godzilla’s atomic breath washed over them, leaving the King of the Monsters roaring triumphantly within a blazing ring of fire.

Inside the four buildings that surrounded Godzilla a platoon of dedicated soldiers trembled as they watched their comrades die. As the flames burned, as Godzilla roared, all let the thought that they were on a suicide mission sink in, and accepted death. This was for the people of Japan, they realized. They were their nation’s last hope.

From the building directly behind Godzilla several soldiers fired their rocket launchers, sending small shells hurtling toward Godzilla. The shells struck Godzilla, but didn’t explode. Instead, the specially designed shells began to drill, injecting the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria as they did. Godzilla’s hide was too thick for him to even notice the activity, but the sounds of the rocket launchers from a second building caught his ear.

Godzilla turned and roared at the soldiers in the building as their shells drilled into his left arm. Then, as the soldiers screamed, Godzilla’s atomic breath gushed from his mouth, incinerating them and bringing the flowered building crashing to the ground. As he roared in satisfaction, Godzilla’s tail lashed through the building beside him, just as the soldiers in that building fired their shells, bringing it crashing to the ground as well.

Several of the soldiers in the third building fired their shells into Godzilla’s neck, but one held back. Godzilla turned, letting his hateful gaze fall on the soldiers, each one of them trembling as they realized that death was calling for them. Then, as Godzilla’s mouth opened, the last soldier fired his shell, letting it land in Godzilla’s mouth seconds before his atomic breath spewed out, destroying them all. Then, for good measure, Godzilla turned and blasted the final flower covered building, then watched as the fires consumed the withering flowers that Biollante had left behind her.

Then Godzilla began to feel strange. His mouth was sore, burning. He parted his maw, letting the night air cool the pain within it. Dozens of enormous blisters had formed within it as the ANEB began to take effect. The use of his atomic power had spurred the spread of the bacterium, encouraging it to multiply and spread through out his phenomenal body. Slowly it would sap Godzilla’s strength, already strained by his past battles and lack of sustenance. Then, slowly but surely, it would kill him.

Godzilla turned, roaring as the blisters burned his gums and tongue. Slowly, he began to walk through the ruins of Sendai, oblivious to the strange beauty of Biollante’s flowers as their colors were shown in the light of a rising sun. He would return to the sea, and there he would rest. Godzilla would go down into the depths, until the time came for him to rise again.

    ***

Megumi watched as the sun rose of Sendai, taking in the marvelous beauty of the flowers as they spread open their petals to embrace the light. She could see Godzilla’s enormous visage on the horizon, slowly leaving the ruined city. For Megumi, it seemed a moment of peace and hope, emerging from chaos and fear. But then again, she thought, wasn’t that the way all of history had worked?

Biollante was a tragedy, she reasoned. Erika Shirigami was innocent of any crime, a victim of a tragic accident. Dr. Shirigami was guilty only of wanting to save his daughter’s life, but his mistake had cost him so much. Their story was one of sadness, a strange story that she thought no one would believe. Still, out of tragedy always came hope. She would do as she promised Dr. Shirigami and his daughter’s lost soul. She would tell the world their story, and be sure that no detail was left out. She realized that it was quite possible that no one would believe her, but that didn’t matter now. Humanity might indeed repeat its mistakes and certainly would make new ones, but Megumi knew that a responsibility fell on each individual to at least try to change the future for the better.

It was an uncertain world, Megumi decided; full of both good and bad, right and wrong, failure and success, tragedy and hope. Science had created monsters, but as the flowers that covered the city seemed to symbolize it could be a blessing and a benefit to the world. She realized that no one could divine the future, even her with her perceptive gift, and for a moment she wondered how dark the future might actually be. Then, as she noticed that the figure of Godzilla was gone from the horizon and saw the flowers of Sendai in full bloom before a beautiful sunrise, she decided that it was best to cling to hope.

    Epilogue

Dr. Minami made his way through the hospital, personally taking the time to examine each and every patient. The virus carried by the monster Deutalios, the creation of science gone mad, had spread throughout the city of Yokohama. With barely enough AMVE to go around, Dr. Minami had volunteered his own talents, personally unlocking the secrets of the wonder drug once held only by the now defunct Gen-Tech laboratories. The wise doctor smiled to himself as he noticed that the patients’ health were improving, thankful that his nightmare now seemed to be over. Indeed, his only regret at that moment was that he could not attend the funeral of his dear friend, Dr. Shirigami, whose body had been found in the ruins of Sendai.

He turned, thinking to himself as he walked down the aisle. It wasn’t all that long ago that he had walked side by side with Japan’s hero, Akira Kitagawa, voicing his fears that had become reality in the present. Part of him hoped that Kitagawa would appear at his side, give him time to air his thoughts to someone he knew would understand. But Kitagawa had disappeared, wishing for anonymity in a world that claimed him a hero.

“Are they all improving?” a familiar voice asked from behind him.

Dr. Minami turned to see Dr. Fukuda, looking about at the patients with great concern and compassion.

“They’re doing very well I’ve found.” Dr. Minami replied. “Thankfully we’ve been able to duplicate the drug and contain the virus. This is one battle we’re winning.”

“Thank God.” Dr. Fukuda replied, talking to Dr. Minami’s knees.

There was an awkward silence for some time. Then, Dr. Fukuda continued.

“I want you to realize that I’m not indifferent to the suffering of others.” he said. “I know some of my…opinions have caused some friction in G-Force, so I wanted to clear the air.

“You have no reason to explain yourself to me.” Dr. Minami replied.

“I feel that I do. You see, you and I are men of science. I’m used to trying to explain things to people who aren’t scientists and having them not understand a word, but I wish for other learned men to understand what I think and believe. I feel I have an obligation to explain myself to them and them alone.”

“I understand.” Dr. Minami said. “And I also understand why you wanted to preserve Godzilla.”

Dr. Fukuda looked at him, seemingly surprised.

“We could have learned an infinite amount from Godzilla.” Dr. Minami continued. “I learned more than perhaps any man before me just by studying the monster’s cells. And every thing I learned merely led to new questions which, I am sure, would have led to questions upon questions once answered. In fact, part of me wishes that we could have studied Godzilla. But, alas, he was too destructive, too much of a threat to allow to survive. He had to be destroyed my friend. There was no way around that.”

“I realize that.” Dr. Fukuda replied. “That, and the fact that I would probably be asked to leave anyway, led me to hand in my resignation. I’m leaving G-Force soon.”

“I’ll be sad to see you go.” Dr. Minami said sincerely.

    “May I ask you something?”

    “Certainly.”

“Do you believe Godzilla is dead, truly?”

Dr. Minami paused, thinking for moment.

“Four times now we have been told that he is gone for good. So I have my doubts.” he said finally.

    ***

Megumi stood with the small group of mourners that had come to stand along Lake Ashino. She watched as Dr. Shirigami’s ashes were scattered, in accordance with his wishes, on the lake he and his daughter had loved so much. As she watched his ashes drift across the water, she thought back to the man who had taught her so much. His story was tragic; a man driven by grief, who made a terrible mistake, destroying the person he loved most and many more, only to be destroyed in turn by the mistake itself. However, Megumi found something comforting in the memory of this man, Genichiro Shirigami. He had been a man with a simple faith in humanity, a man who desired justice and peace for all mankind, a man whose heart knew almost limitless love for his daughter. He was a good man, she reasoned, even if he had made such terrible mistakes.

As she stared out at Lake Ashino and the setting sun she thought she saw a young woman smiling down as the sun shown around her. Then, as quickly as the vision had come, it vanished. Megumi smiled to herself, realizing that the soul of Erika Shirigami had found rest, along with her father’s.

She wondered though if more mistakes as great as Shirigami’s would be made. She struggled with the thought that humanity would again see another Biollante, or another Deutalios, or another Godzilla. Still, she realized that humanity could not go forward in fear, but only in hope. Dr. Shirigami would want it that way.

With that thought in mind she cast a single red rose into the waters of Lake Ashino. Then, as the vision of an old friend embracing his daughter flashed briefly before her eyes, she smiled, and prayed.

“Rest in peace Dr. Shirigami.” she prayed. “I’ll do my best to share your story with anyone who will listen. I promise, your legacy will be in your story and in the future it helps to create.”

    ***

A massive form sank down into the depths, seemingly devoid of life. Sharks swarmed about it, trying desperately to tear off some tiny piece of flesh, finally giving up after worrying countless teeth down on the thick hide. The body of Godzilla, King of the Monsters, now seemed nothing but a corpse.

Within the monster the deadly biological weapon he had been injected with was running rampant, threatening to destroy him. Godzilla’s heart continued to beat, but only just. He had slipped into darkness, determined that as he slumbered his body would fight off the invader, enabling to one day rise again.

Until then, Godzilla would sleep. In the darkness he could rest, and dream. Already a dream was stirring before his eyes. It was not a horrible dream; not a vision of his horrible past that fueled Godzilla’s never ending war. Instead it was a dream of long lost peace, of a time before the fires when Godzilla had never known the pain and rage and emptiness that had become such large parts of his existence. For now at least, Godzilla could enjoy the peace he so desperately desired, even if it was only a dream between reality.

This is the third of the three stories in my series. Of the three, it's definately the darkest, and perhaps the saddest in many ways. This one hasn't got the attention I had hoped it would on other forums, and my former cowriter, Jeremy Sand, wasn't all that pleased with my portrayal of Biollante, much less the ending. Still, all things considered, I'm rather pleased with how this one came out.

For those that are interested, ideas for a fourth story are currently brewing. I'm wanting this one to be big, as it will be set in 2014, the sixtieth year of Godzilla's reign as King of the Monsters. I've got a couple of ideas brewing and if you care to contribute, send me a message and I'll gladly bat some ideas around with you.
