Steve's first ever attempt at Kaiju fanfic.

I wrote it a month or two ago... it doesn't even have a title and basically amounts to a big ol' nasty battle scene, to be blunt. It's been sitting around gathering dust and I'm not sure where to go with it, though I've had some vague ideas recently, (which I don't plan on giving away at the moment, just in case I actually continue it.) Continuity-wise... it's not really connected to any canon films, but rather, takes place in a very Showa-esque AU.

    Anyway, enjoy.

The sun hung high in the in the blue, cloudless sky, a gentle breeze wafting through the peaceful meadow. Birds sang in the trees, butterflies frolicked and bees buzzed, stopping at each flower to sip its nectar and then moving on to the next. A clear, gentle stream trickled through the middle, gurgling over the rocks and sparkling brilliantly in the sunlight.

A deer emerged cautiously from the forest, ears swivelling like radar dishes, scanning for any sign of danger. Finding none, it happily trotted over to the stream, and lowered its neck to lap up the cool, bubbling water. Suddenly, a tremor coursed through the ground, and the stream rippled. The deer’s head snapped up and it peered from side to side, investigating the origin of the rumble. It’s been hearing them all day, but so far no indication as to where they’ve been coming from…

…The deer’s eyes widened in terror as a shadow loomed overhead and a horrifying reflection was cast in the river, but no chance of escape was given. A huge, scaly, greenish-grey, triple taloned foot came crashing down from above, flattening the ungulate like a bug, and then lifted off, leaving the buck’s shattered remains behind in a twelve foot deep crater. A long, thrashing tail dragged behind it, sweeping back and forth, casually toppling over trees and tearing up the earth. In seconds, the once peaceful meadow was reduced to a smear of upturned earth and foliage.

Flaring his nostrils and sucking in a deep breath, the beast dropped his jaw and let out a long, rumbling sigh, enjoying the clean, untainted aroma of the countryside. A welcome change from the stench of exhaust and garbage so prevalent in the human settlements he normally chose to wander through. However, a nuclear snack was not the objective for the titanic saurian today, so instead he opted for a chance to stretch his muscles and engage in a brisk power walk. Even the King of the Monsters coveted a peaceful stroll every now and then…

Godzilla snorted as a flock of birds stirred up from the meadow fluttered past his face. He lazily followed them with his peripheral vision, and watched Minya gesture at them, apparently amused by the colours. Godzilla gave a non-committal grunt, almost as if to condescendingly say “that’s nice, son…”, and continued to march onward. Minya looked up at his father, cooed, and then pattered on after him.

Indeed, it was a quiet, sunny, peaceful day, a good day for the King of the Monsters and his adopted heir to take a vacation from training and vanquishing Kaiju and spend some quality father/son time together. Godzilla was certainly enjoying himself- however, Minya was just bored.

Minya stooped over, clutching a large boulder and yanking it out of the ground. Cooing again, Godzilla took notice and turned around. Minya waved the stone, gesturing towards it, and then threw it to his father. Catching the rock, Godzilla snorted and lightly tossed it back to his son. Minya tossed it back, and Godzilla caught it once more. Any human wandering past would certainly have been puzzled to witness the bizarre, anthropomorphic, sugary cute spectacle.

Godzilla roared to his son, and pointed off to the distance, as if to say “go long!” Indeed, Minya did so, scampering off to assume a position far away. Then, Godzilla tossed the stone up into the air, spun around and swatted it with his tail… a wee bit too hard, sending it flying over Minya’s head and far over the horizon. Godzilla let out a bemused growl, impressed by his own strength. Minya watched the airborne boulder sail off into the distance, sighed, and scuttled back to his father. So much for playing catch… the two continued to lumber onwards.

Suddenly, the ground a short distance in front of Godzilla and Minya began to bulge upwards and crack, trees uprooting and boulders tumbling. Minya let out a terrified shriek and hid behind his father. Godzilla stared at the rising bulge of earth, his jagged dorsal fins glowing blue in preparation to incinerate whatever threat emerged with a blast of Atomic Breath.

A shape erupted from the bulge in a burst of earth and grit. Godzilla’s fins powered down, and he snorted, unimpressed. Standing before him was a short, dumpy Kaiju, a mere 30 meters tall. It looked like some kind of hairless rodent, with pale skin that had clearly visible veins pulsing underneath. It had a short snout that had a pair of fleshy, waving feelers on either side, jaws filled with rows of sharp, jagged teeth, and narrow, slitted eyes. Its tail was long and whip-like, with a tuft of long, coarse hairs on the end, and its claws were huge and thick, but somewhat blunt and worn, probably from digging.

The repulsive creature posed no apparent threat to Godzilla, but it could be dangerous to his much smaller son. He roared at it, hoping to scare the critter off, but instead it reared back on its hind legs and let out a wet, piercing shriek in reply. Then, the creature crouched and pounced at Godzilla, hurling itself straight towards his throat.

Anticipating such an attack, he spun around and effortlessly swatted the thing away with a vicious swipe of his tail. The critter landed on its back, tumbling along the ground, its body tearing a furrow through the earth. It rolled back onto its feet, hissed, and charged towards its Saurian adversary on all fours, apparently unfazed by the blow. Godzilla powered up his Atomic Breath, and belched forth a neon blue ray of energy. The beam bit deep into the monster’s pallid flesh, blasting off a bloody chunk and exposing its rib cage, but it kept charging as if it hadn’t had any affect at all.

The rodent beast leapt again, but once again the attack failed, the Monster King stepping to the side and grabbing its tail, catching it in mid leap. It struggled, trying to twist around and sink its fangs into its larger opponent’s wrist, but Godzilla grappled with it, moving it into position…

…And then plunged his claws deep into the creature’s neck, blood spraying out as he tore a deep gash. It thrashed, hissing and snarling and still trying to bite its adversary, but Godzilla held it at arm’s length by his tail, letting the blood drain out of its wound. Eventually, it stopped wriggling, and Godzilla snorted and tossed it aside, the carcass landing with a wet, leathery splat a fair distance away.

Minya breathed a sigh of relief, but Godzilla uttered a grunt, unconvinced all was clear. It had been easy to kill that thing… a bit too easy. His intuition said there was more to it then that…

…And indeed, there was. The ground bulged again, and again, and again, and eight more of the critters emerged from the ground in a circle around Godzilla and Minya. Two of them scampered off and tore into their fallen comrade, messily devouring it. The rest of them hissed and shrieked at the Monster King, prowling towards him with intent to kill.

Godzilla let loose with a blast of atomic breath, aiming it square at the face of the nearest rodent, blowing off its head, showering the surrounding area with skull fragments, brains and gore. However, one of the creatures used this as an opportunity to dart in from behind and attack, slicing into Godzilla’s heel with its razor sharp fangs. Godzilla screamed in pain, and swept his tail low, sending the critter sailing, and then bellowed again when another attacked him from the side and chomped down on his arm.

The mutant Dinosaur powered up his atomic breath, blasting the rat clinging to his arm, and then swept his beam in a wide arc. Two of the critters deftly leapt out of the way, the beam igniting the trees behind them in a fiery explosion, but another was caught in the path of the beam and was torn open.

Minya shrieked, and Godzilla turned his head just in time to see another rodent leap towards him from behind. He wrapped his tail around the thing’s neck, snapped it with a flick of his tail and tossed the corpse away. The three remaining rodents hissed at the two gorging on the carcass of the first, and they begrudgingly stopped feasting and joined the fight.

Godzilla powered up another blast of atomic breath, and opened fire at another rodent. It ducked under the beam, closed the distance between itself and the monster king, and leaped. It clung to Godzilla’s shoulders with its hind legs and began slashing at his face. He bucked and threw the thing off, howling in rage and agony. The little ******* had gotten lucky; its claws had torn out Godzilla’s left eye before he’d thrown it away.

Another Rodent leapt at Godzilla, biting into his shoulder, and a second one tackled him in his flank. The force of both of the creatures slamming into him was enough to tip the mutant dinosaur over onto his side, and he was set upon by a third. On their own, the creatures were nothing to boast about, but working in unison like this they were a force to be reckoned with, a quick, nasty opponent that could attack from all sides. A fourth leapt on him, and chomped into his side, tearing out a hunk of flesh and swallowing it, already starting to devour him before he was even dead.

Godzilla thrashed and bellowed, running on pure rage and adrenaline. His dorsal fins lit up, and he let loose with a nuclear pulse, pushing the rats off of him with a burst of energy and scattering them all over. Rearing back to his feet, he fired his breath, igniting one in midair, then swept the beam and killed another before it touched the ground. The other two hit the ground, and Godzilla blasted them before they could get up. The King of the Monsters roared in triumph… and then heard Minya shriek behind him.

The last remaining rat had Minya grasped in its paws and was running off with him. Godzilla bellowed in fury, and powered up his beam, hoping to blast the thing before it got away…

…But then he thought better of it, powering down. The risk of accidentally blasting his son was too great. Godzilla roared once more and gave chase, tired, bruised and bloody, but determined to get his son back at all costs…
