I read on Sci-fi Japan, that 'King Kong Escapes' was one of the films lost in the Universal fire. Anyone know what other films were lost? Does Toho still have a reel of 'King Kong Escapes'?

I believe the King Kong vs Godzilla print was damaged too actually.

Oh, the King Kong ride got completely ruined. They also announced they WON'T rebuild it, instead they'll be replacing it with something else.

    Damn that sucks! :o

So not only have we lost some American prints of some classic kaiju films, not only did the Kong ride burn down, but they're also not going to rebuild it?!

So the only American prints were there? Don't studios usually have back up prints of films in the case of something like this, or theft or whatever else?

Yeah, from my understanding it was the negative prints that were damaged.

Any idea how the fire started. Does Toho still have prints of these two films?

It was started accidentally by some workers..not sure what happened exactly, but they went on break and it suddenly caught on fire. Yeah, I'm sure Universal still has other copies of the films.

Universal said they lost nearly 100% of their archived film prints. They still have their negatives and whatever digital materials exist for DVDs and HD TV. So the movies aren't completely lost, but nearly all the prints that would be used for theatrical screenings were destroyed. Not all of them will be replaced.

For example, KING KONG ESCAPES was screened at the Egyptian Theatre in 2005, and at that time Universal said that was first time in 30 years that anyone had rented that print. G-Fest projected the DVD last year because the theater they use did not have the equipment to screen the print. Thrillville planned to show the print this week but had to go with DVD because of the fire at Universal.

So the print was rented twice in 30 years. Universal won't see any financial reason to replace it. If someone wants to screen KKE in the future it will be from DVD not 35mm.

As for the King Kong attraction, it had been removed from the theme park years ago and warehoused. Universal won't rebuild it because they never planned to use it again.
