SciFi Japan has updated with a first look at BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE, the original documentary produced by Classic Media.

BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE goes behind the scenes of a filmmaking style that remains firmly rooted in the past even as special effects leap into the future. From the original GOJIRA (1954) through 50-plus years of sequels, spin-offs and imitations, this original documentary tells the story of the genre's creation and evolution via exclusive interviews with filmmakers, special-effects artists, actors and monster stuntmen.

Featuring Akira Takarada, Hiroshi Koizumi, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Shogo Tomiyama, Haruo Nakajima, Kenpachiro Satsuma, Tsutomu "Tom" Kitagawa, Shusuke Kaneko, Teruyoshi Nakano, Akira Tsuburaya, Ryuji Honda, Shinichi Wakasa, Yasuyuki Inoue, Toshiro Aoki, Akinori Takagi, Toshio Miike, Shiro Sano, and narrated by self-proclaimed Godzilla fan Alex Cox (director of REPO MAN, SID & NANCY), the film celebrates the artistry behind the world of Japanese monsters and ponders the future of Godzilla and his city-smashing analog brethren in the digital age.

BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE will have a premiere screening at the Egyptian Theatre on August 3. The film will be included as a bonus feature with Classic Media's DVD set of the Toho genre classics WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS and RODAN, which goes on sale across the country on September 9.

SciFi Japan’s coverage begins with Part 1: SYNOPSIS; photos and information detailing who and what fans can expect to see in the BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE. Part 2: PRODUCTION NOTES and PERSONNEL FILE— which will run on SFJ in the next few days— will cover the making of the film and the people behind the production.

I'll definitely be getting this, seeing as I don't own Rodan or War of the Gargantuas, and I really want to see both of them.

It may not be a movie, but at least the fandom has something neat to look forward to. ;)

I'm really looking forward to this documentary! It certainly looks promising!

And of course, I'm waiting to see Rodan and WOTG too, since I haven't seen either of them yet. :)

Everyone is welcome for the news. Thanks for all the enthusiastic replies!

I know some of you are saying you're only interested in one of the films (or the documentary)-- or are worried that the set will be expensive-- but both RODAN and WOTG are great classic Toho monster movies and are definitely worth getting. Besides, the Classic Media set includes US and Japanese versions for both movies plus the new documentary... all for only $19.95 (and Amazon is selling the set for just $14.99). That's a lot of cool kaiju action for less than twenty bucks!

One other thing: Check SFJ on Monday for more pics and info from BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE.

Oh wow! That isn't a bad price for all that. Hmmm, looks like I'll be saving a few dollars for September. ;)

It's a real bargain. There's five movies (2 versions of RODAN, 2 versions of WOTG, 1 documentary) for about $20... that works out to $4 a movie.

No commentaries on these films. Classic Media decided to focus time and money on the documentary instead.

No problem... it's not like you have to read everything RIGHT NOW.

The doc focuses on the FX techniques used in the kaiju movies and shows... how and why Tsuburaya and the other FX artists have created the visuals we've all enjoyed. So there's not any discussion on music.

The one big music contribution in the documentary is that Kow Otani-- who created the music for GMK and the 90s Gamera movies-- composed and performed a brand-new score for this film. It is beautiful, and I think kaiju music fans are going to love it.

I don't suppose there'll be a soundtrack released for it?;)

I haven't heard of any plans for a soundtrack CD but I'll push for it. I want one, too!
