No, stay away from the anime; that'll spell disaster for sure.

As for what they should do, I agree, go back and remake the original. Heck, why don't they go ahead and hire Matt Frank ( http://godzillasamurai.deviantart.com ) and use his redesigns for a Godzilla Neo remake series.

Matts art is freakin amazing. I told him about Gfest and from what i understand browsing through his Deviant art page he went this year hope he made out like a bandit his work is just that good i cant imagin fans not jumping all over anything he had for sale...

I'd prefer Godzilla stay live action, but there's no doubt that a well-done anime would have wider appeal than most of the recent Godzilla films. Studio Ghibli's films are consistently the high-grossing Japanese productions, and movies like AKIRA, EVANGELION, and GHOST IN THE SHELL are highly regarded.

On the other hand, the Heisei Godzilla films are not that highly thought of in Japan so a continuation is not what Godzilla needs.

Since this has become a "future of the Godzilla series" you should check out Classic Media's upcoming documentary BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE since Toho Pictures prez Shogo Tomiyama and others briefly discuss that very topic.

Sorry EM, but the opinion of the Heisei has dropped over the years. They're pretty known now for playing it safe with stories by trying to appeal to every demographic (monsters for the boys, something cute for the girls, etc), retreading old ideas and FX techniques rather than movie forward, and generally being treated as productto crank out every December.

The 1990s Gamera films were a different story... they won awards and received critical praise while the Heisei Godzillas were seen as kiddie movies.

Did you ever notice that the directors of the Heisei films haven't gone on to other big movies, that most of the Heisei actors aren't around any more, and none of the Heisei monsters were brought back for the Millennium series... they didn't even make it into FINAL WARS.

You're right! I never noticed that. But I never really thought much of the Heisei series, either. Sure, I've only seen a couple of the movies, but the only one I did that wasn't meh was Destoroyah.

Yeah there weren't that many new monsters introduced besides Biolantee, Battera and Destroyah...and most lacked any reasonable content besides the monsters bashing each other...poorly i might add

I say put more realism into the films. Kaneko's idea of doing so made is GMK more frightening. The other thing that I'm curious on is why not get into the minds of the kaiju? See things from their perspective.

How would you do it, though?

That aside, I'd like to see something that truly shows the dangers of screwin' around with atomic energy. Like, big-time global-scale mass destruction.

Seeing things from the kaiju's perspective with be pointless and cheesy. Part of the flaws of of the Godzilla movies is that the human characters were rubbish and they hardly ever interacted with the kaiju - and that is why the Gamera series works so well. Toho needs to focus on making their plot more interesting and making us feel more for them. Godzilla should be the villain.

We got a little taste of what it might be like in the mind of a daikaiju with Kiryu. One second, machine. Next second, flashback to 1954, and Kiryu goes nuts. So, to a point, we have an idea of what that could be like. Also, we get Godzilla perspectives in GMK, but that is only by way of camera angles (ex: looking down at running, screaming people).

As for an anime Godzilla film, that would receive mixed feelings. It would depend on who did the film. If we had something like Ghost in the Shell or Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories as far as graphics, etc., then, yes, I would love to see it. But if it is anything less, forget it. It would have to really be great in order to be accepted.

A GMK sequel is an entertaining notion... but, to be honest, I think it is better as a cliffhanger. It just suits the film better.

However, if a sequel were to be thought of... well, here is my idea:

After the Satsuma is repaired, the military uses it to hunt for any remains of Godzilla suitable to preserve. They find the heart, and freeze it, using pieces of it for research and perhaps even a little bit of genetic manipulation. The primary idea is to find something that Godzilla is weak against. There is a public outcry: Godzilla is dead! Why bother? The prime minister is also uncertain about tampering with the heart of Godzilla (let's face it: the GMK Godzilla was pretty creepy). However, there is still that dread, and the knowledge that, no matter what, Godzilla always manages to come back.

Somewhere in the ocean, near a former atomic testing site, something stirs in the waters. An eye opens, and we hear a familiar roar...

In the lab where the heart is kept, scientists are horrified to note that the heart is still beating. Faintly, but it's beating. They also notice that all incisions and chunks taken out of the heart are slowly healing. Godzilla's regeneration powers are still at work.

After a period of time, with myths going all over that the military is going to make another Godzilla, and gossip flying about Godzilla not-so-imenent return... a stomp. A low growl in the night. Mysterious tremors. And on one night when something really, really important in Japan is going on, the creature from the sea emerges in hellish glory.

    Another Godzilla

Okay, okay... it's odd, I know. But I think it would be interesting to see the reaction to a second Godzilla. As for how the military would handle it... well, that would be a bit of a problem. The Guardian Monsters are all dead, and Mothra obviously won't be joining us. So who do you send? Something out of mythology, or a close approximation. Either that, or one heck of a counter-attack using anything the JSDF can throw, with the exception of nuclear weapons.
    Baka bakka.

Kuroneko-sama, have you read my fic, "The Wrath of Godzilla"? Since you seem into the idea of a GMK sequel, you might like it.

GMK was a good movie. A sequel would be interesting, but i think it would be left better the way it is, as someone mentioned. In regards to an anime, I'd be willing to see it. They already had some Godzilla comic books release way back in the day, not many though (comic book not manga). But if done right, I think a Godzilla anime could be lots of fun to watch. It would have to have an amazingly good story though with good graphics as was mentioned. Or maybe a complete CGI as the kind of graphics for Final Fantasy Advent Children. Now that would be sweet. Oh well, hopefully there will be more Godzilla movies soon.

If only more movies with the Heisei Goji suits could come out. That was like one of Godzilla's best and most classic looks. When someone says Godzilla, I immediately think "Heisei Goji!"

I completely agree with you Cyndi. The Heisei Godzilla is the best looking Godzilla around. Much of the millineum series didn't have any kind of connection except Godzilla Tokyo SOS with Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 3. Not to mention the Heisei had Miki Segusa in it and the series had some really good effects. Oh well, we can keep dreaming, I guess.
