I was just thinking... since so many Showa kaiju returned for GFW, could GFW have occured in the Showa continuity? And since GINO appeared in GFW too, does this mean that the 1998 Godzilla film was a Showa movie too?

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Funny that the same question popped up twice in less than a month.

GODZILLA 1998 is separate from the other movies. In G98 the monster is named after an old Japanese legend, not a world-famous kaiju. There are no references to anything from the Toho films... nobody bring up that there's a Japanese Godzilla and a bunch of other monsters who have appeared time and again for 40+ years.

One thing it's important to remember is that Toho treats the monsters like they're actors playing different parts in different films. Just like Harrison Ford can be Han Solo, a banker, a lawyer, or Indiana Jones so can a kaiju like Mothra play an ancient god, an alien, or a spirit guardian. That's why Toho can do multiple versions of Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, King Ghidorah etc... all the films don't have to tie together.

The American Godzilla can be Godzilla in G98 and Zilla in GFW and that does not necessarily mean those two movies are part of the same continuity.

That's a yes and no kind of thing. In GODZILLA (1998) none of the events from the Toho films ever happened, while GMK is directly tied to the story of GODZILLA (1954).

Kaneko threw the reference to G'98 in as a joke because he feels that Devlin and Emmerich totally misunderstood the character of Godzilla. The idea was that the characters could be referring to G'98 or maybe something else... but anyone familar with Godzilla knew exactly what meant.

The first time I saw GMK was at a screening at Sony Studios, and the Sony execs thought that joke was hilarious.

That scene also worked in the context of GMK's story because the main idea is Godzilla's original rampage was so long ago that most people barely remember the monster. Many people don't even know what Godzilla looked like so any time a giant reptilain monster appears it's labelled a "Godzilla". That's why some people thought the monster in New York was Godzilla, and why Baragon is mistaken for Godzilla early in GMK.

And then the real Godzilla shows up and reminds everyone who is really King of the Monsters...

O.o I hadn't thought of that, but now that you brought it up, it makes a ton of sense.

^Yeah I was surprised about that as well. Especially Rodan and Anguirus.

    Well, yes.

I was just really happy to see Rodan, Anguirus, and Gigan again.

But you are correct. The movie could have been so much better.
