G2K-POV: Gamera - The Brave Well, finaly I saw the latest film from my turtle friend Gamera and well, it was a nice spin. After previously seeing G1 and G2 just hours before (I showed my bro the Heisei Gamera films and he is loving them), I was surprised my expectations were not that high. But after seeing off of cinema.lycos's presentation of the Showa Gamera films in their American forms, it wouldn't get much worse, could it? The opening fifteen minutes are very well, above expectional if the opening took place in 2003 instead of 1973 and was a sequel to G3. Gamera looks more like a turtle, but that is not a bad thing. Advant Gamera is the coolest design other than the G3 design. If I could, I would want to see the two Gameras team up... Awesome visuals. But Gamera's roar is disapointing since at times it is stock dinosaur roars and even the '76's Kong's roar. Why they changed the roar is stupid. Then we come to the present day Japan and we see that the main character's mother died the summer before and seems alittle agnostic. Really adds a dark mood to the film. Other plot points in the film could have been played out much better though. I was surprised that when the Goverment took in Gamera after the initial battle with Zedus, they did not want to disect him but rather help him get stronger through science means. Plus, Mie's surgery needed to be developed more. It could have been a major suspence point in the film and too bad we never seem to find out what she is suffering from. Zedus himself is just, weird. Cool concept, he is not executed verry well. His movements are too human like, especialy the hands. The siut is just wobbly as hell and the head cannot show emotion. When it comes to development, we have no history on the kaiju other than the fact that he has been as of late attacking random ships. The siut is the most distracting part. I have already explained the major grievences. When it comes to Gamera though, he seems to be misunderstood. Again, we have no background on the advant Gamera and for a hero, he seems to be hated. When Toto Gamera comes, he happens to be the most developed character in the whole film other than Toru. And with the absence of a sequel, we never learn why Japan hates Gamera and none of thiese plot holes previously mentioned filled. But the biggest thing is how they recaptured the "hero to children" image of Gamera. Gamera, is one of the most Christ-like kaiju. This is especialy evident in G2. And in this film, this is no exception. Such is the phrase "be like little children". The adults are all skeptical of Gamera and yet the children, who seem to be mature for the most part except for a beach scene which Toru and his boys try to get the other to strip, seem mature and responsible. And the end scene with all of the children running to get Gamera's amulet to him is one of the best scenes in a kaiju film yet. But one last thing: this is a Kadowoka picture. I take this into serious consideration, especialy since Kadowoka is known for their massive productions, clearly seen in films like SATOMI HAKKEN DEN and HEAVEN AND EARTH. And although Haryuki Kadowoka got arrested on account for cocaine possession, I expect nothing less from an employee of Kadowoka's Yoichi Arishige. The whole film is basicaly an episode of the newer Ultraman series extended three times the length than normal... Gamera: The Brave is one of thoes films which tries to make Godzilla's Revenge into the goodness of GMK. We got good stuff with kids. While visuals are not as great as they could be (Gamera 2 blows this film away), it succeeds over it's Showa countterpart as is a good film. I give it 7/10. Saddly, I fail to see why it is unsuccessful, since it is this kind of happy family film which is taking over Japan right now, the happieness... But thank God we did not get the Gamera song sung to us... |
